Golden text: Psalms 26:8
O Lord, I love the habitation of your house and the place where your glory dwells.
About that time Herod the king laid violent hands on some who belonged to the church. 2 He killed James the brother of John with the sword, 3 and when he saw that it pleased the Jews, he proceeded to arrest Peter also. This was during the days of Unleavened Bread. 4 And when he had seized him, he put him in prison, delivering him over to four squads of soldiers to guard him, intending after the Passover to bring him out to the people. 5 So Peter was kept in prison, but earnest prayer for him was made to God by the church.
6 Now when Herod was about to bring him out, on that very night, Peter was sleeping between two soldiers, bound with two chains, and sentries before the door were guarding the prison. 7 And behold, an angel of the Lord stood next to him, and a light shone in the cell. He struck Peter on the side and woke him, saying, “Get up quickly.” And the chains fell off his hands. 8 And the angel said to him, “Dress yourself and put on your sandals.” And he did so. And he said to him, “Wrap your cloak around you and follow me.” 9 And he went out and followed him. He did not know that what was being done by the angel was real, but thought he was seeing a vision. 10 When they had passed the first and the second guard, they came to the iron gate leading into the city. It opened for them of its own accord, and they went out and went along one street, and immediately the angel left him. 11 When Peter came to himself, he said, “Now I am sure that the Lord has sent his angel and rescued me from the hand of Herod and from all that the Jewish people were expecting.”
12 When he realized this, he went to the house of Mary, the mother of John whose other name was Mark, where many were gathered together and were praying. 13 And when he knocked at the door of the gateway, a servant girl named Rhoda came to answer. 14 Recognizing Peter’s voice, in her joy she did not open the gate but ran in and reported that Peter was standing at the gate. 15 They said to her, “You are out of your mind.” But she kept insisting that it was so, and they kept saying, “It is his angel!” 16 But Peter continued knocking, and when they opened, they saw him and were amazed. 17 But motioning to them with his hand to be silent, he described to them how the Lord had brought him out of the prison. And he said, “Tell these things to James and to the brothers.” Then he departed and went to another place.
18 Now when day came, there was no little disturbance among the soldiers over what had become of Peter. 19 And after Herod searched for him and did not find him, he examined the sentries and ordered that they should be put to death. Then he went down from Judea to Caesarea and spent time there.
20 Now Herod was angry with the people of Tyre and Sidon, and they came to him with one accord, and having persuaded Blastus, the king’s chamberlain, they asked for peace, because their country depended on the king’s country for food. 21 On an appointed day Herod put on his royal robes, took his seat upon the throne, and delivered an oration to them. 22 And the people were shouting, “The voice of a god, and not of a man!” 23 Immediately an angel of the Lord struck him down, because he did not give God the glory, and he was eaten by worms and breathed his last.
24 But the word of God increased and multiplied.
25 And Barnabas and Saul returned from Jerusalem when they had completed their service, bringing with them John, whose other name was Mark.
21st Century Science and Health
Humanity is fortunate when the terrors of human mortal mind are defeated through Science. We can escape from sin and mortality as we overcome the mythological and primitive suggestions of human mind. In the first-steps of mental liberation, however, the knowledge of good and evil isn’t scientifically seen because evil isn’t real.
Mind-science has nothing to do with sitting-on-the-fence of impertinent knowledge, because Mind-science is of God and demonstrates the divine Principle, working out the purposes of good only. The maximum of good is the infinite God and God’s idea, the All-in-all. Anything unlike the conscious infinite is a suggested lie.
As named in Christian Science, mesmerism or crowd thinking is the specific term for error, or human mortal mind. It comes from the false belief that mind is inside it’s thought (matter), and is both evil and good, or that evil is as real as good and more powerful. This penchant to live out a mortal life has not one quality of Truth and is either ignorant or malicious. The malicious forms of hypnotic suggestions end in moral idiocy. The truths of immortal Mind annihilate the human mind’s weak and stupid tendencies, which wander in circles like blind bugs flying into artificial lights and getting burned.
In reality there is no human mortal mind and consequently no transfer of temporal thoughts and will-powers. Life and being are of God. No harm can occur in the realm of Science where scientific, eternal thoughts pass from God to us.
When Christian Science and impulsive crowd thinking are comprehended, as they will be at no distant date, it will be seen why honest, hardworking people are unfairly persecuted and undermined by wolves in sheep’s clothing.
Arthur Schopenhauer has been credited to say, “All truth passes through three stages. First, it is ridiculed. Second, it is violently opposed. Third, it is accepted as being self-evident.” Or, in words attributed to George Bernard Shaw, “All great truths begin as blasphemies.”
Jesus cast out devils (evils) and healed the sick. Followers can also drive fear and all evil out of themselves and others and heal the sick. God will heal the sick through us whenever we are governed by God. Truth banishes error now, as surely as it did twenty centuries ago. All of Truth is not understood; that is why its healing power is not fully demonstrated.
If sickness is true or the idea of Truth, you cannot destroy sickness and it would be absurd to try. So, classify sickness and error as Jesus did, when he spoke of the sick, “whom Satan has kept bound.” Find a sovereign antidote for error in the life-giving power of Truth acting on human belief. Truth’s power opens the prison doors to those who are bound, and sets the captives free physically and morally.
When the curse of sickness or sin tempts you, cling steadfastly to God and Spirit’s idea. Allow nothing but Soul’s likeness to prevail in your thought. Do not let fear or doubt eclipse your clear sense and calm trust in Truth. The recognition of life harmonious—as Life eternally is—can destroy any painful sense of, or belief in, that which Life is not. Let divine Science instead of fleshly sense, support your understanding of being and this understanding will exchange error for Truth, replace physicality with spirituality, and silence complaint with harmony.
Darkness and doubt surround thought as long as it bases creation on physics, biology, time, or space. From a human standpoint, “Can you fathom the mysteries of God?” Everything must be unchangeable Mind, or else everything must be changeable matter. Neither can produce the other. Mind is immortal.
If we pray to God as though God is a measurable person, human doubts and fears rear their ugly heads and become obstacles. Because of the human mind’s unawareness of God as divine Spirit, there is an unawareness of true Love, to whom all things are possible. This spiritual unawareness sees Love as a gendered creator and ruler, thereby causing people to see themselves as merely physical and susceptible to mortality. God is immaterial Love and we can grasp the wonders brought by Love. We can see ourselves as images of God through spiritual consciousness. The brain’s electrochemical functioning is ignorant of the world of Truth. The brain is not wired to the reality of immortal existence. The world of life in matter is not cognizant of life in Soul.
If we are sensitive to the body and regard omnipotent Being as having fleshly sensations, we are not “away from the body and at home with the Lord.” In the life of Spirit, we can’t “serve two masters.” To be “at home with the Lord,” is to have not only faith, but also the actual demonstration and understanding of Life as revealed in spiritual Science. To be “at home with the Lord” is to be in obedience to the law of God. To be with God is to be influenced by infinite Mind, not by finite minds.
Which was first, Mind or medicine? If Mind was first and self-existent, then Mind, not matter, was the first medicine. God being All-in-all, made medicine; but that medicine was Mind. Medicine can’t be physical particles because measurable units depart from the nature and character of intelligence, God. Truth is God’s remedy for error of every kind, and Truth destroys only what is untrue. Today, as yesterday, Christ drives out the errors of evil and heals the sick.
Has anyone seen God take medicinal drugs? God doesn’t provide drugs or health care programs, humans do. Jesus didn’t recommend and employ drugs in his healing work. The sick are more regrettably lost than the sinning, if the sick can’t rely on God for help and sinners can. The divine Mind never called matter medicine, and matter required a mortal and human belief before it could be considered as medicine.
Sometimes the human mind uses one error to medicine another error. Forced to choose between two difficulties, the human mind takes the lesser problem to relieve the greater. For example, to relieve an uncomfortable eye condition, the human mind may choose eye-drops, temporarily quieting the suffering but not curing it. Why admit that mind influences the body somewhat, yet act as though the organs, hormones, nerves, bones, etc., outweigh the power of Spirit? Controlled by this kind of thinking, people unthinkingly repeat learned reactions. They lean on the artificial or the unintelligent, never discerning how this deprives them of the available superiority of divine Mind. The body is not controlled scientifically by a negative mind.
Mind is the grand revelator and there can be no power except that which is derived from Mind. If Mind was first chronologically, is first potentially, and must be first eternally, then give to Mind the glory, honor, dominion, and power everlastingly due its holy name.
Spirituality, exempt from decline or decay, has a glory of its own—the radiance of Soul. We can be models of spiritual sense. Our spirituality is designed by complete Mind and reflects those higher conceptions of loveliness which transcend all false conceptions.
