Golden text: Psalms 18:1-3*
I love you, God—you make me strong. God is bedrock under my feet,
the castle in which I live, my rescuing knight. My God—the high crag
where I run for dear life, hiding behind the boulders, safe in the granite hideout.
I sing to God, the Praise-Lofty, and find myself safe and saved.
A man from the family of Levi married a Levite woman. The woman became pregnant and had a son. She saw there was something special about him and hid him. She hid him for three months. When she couldn’t hide him any longer she got a little basket-boat made of papyrus, waterproofed it with tar and pitch, and placed the child in it. Then she set it afloat in the reeds at the edge of the Nile. 4-6 The baby’s older sister found herself a vantage point a little way off and watched to see what would happen to him. Pharaoh’s daughter came down to the Nile to bathe; her maidens strolled on the bank. She saw the basket-boat floating in the reeds and sent her maid to get it. She opened it and saw the child—a baby crying! Her heart went out to him. She said, “This must be one of the Hebrew babies.” 7 Then his sister was before her: “Do you want me to go and get a nursing mother from the Hebrews so she can nurse the baby for you?” 8 Pharaoh’s daughter said, “Yes. Go.” The girl went and called the child’s mother. 9 Pharaoh’s daughter told her, “Take this baby and nurse him for me. I’ll pay you.” The woman took the child and nursed him. 10 After the child was weaned, she presented him to Pharaoh’s daughter who adopted him as her son. She named him Moses (Pulled-Out), saying, “I pulled him out of the water.”
21st Century Science and Health**
If Spirit, Soul, can sin or be lost, then being and immortality would be lost along with all the faculties of Mind; but being cannot be lost while God exists.
Nothing can hide from spiritual sense the harmony of all things and the might and permanence of Truth. There is no oblivion for Soul and its faculties.
The acquisition and retention of false beliefs is destroyed by truth. Change the evidence to improve the human consciousness and that which before seemed real to false belief will disappear. As we attain the reality of spiritual evidence, we find our immortality. The only fact concerning any human belief is that it is neither scientific nor eternal but is exposed to unrest and mutation.
Human pleasures and pains which come through mortal consciousness perish. They can’t withstand the force of Truth. They can’t withstand spiritual sense and the actuality of being. As people lose satisfaction in error and idle thinking, they find satisfaction in Soul-sense.
Until we learn of Soul-sense, we suffer from personal pleasures and pains. How long it takes to learn of Soul-sense depends on the tenacity of mistaken mindsets.
The knowledge gained from logic rooted in the physical, leads to sin and death. When the appearance of Spirit and matter, Truth and error, seems to intermix, the appearance rests on foundations which time is eroding. Mortal mind judges ever-changing evidence until Science wipes it out with spiritual evidence. A logic based on spirituality improves thought, takes a step out of error and encourages the next step in understanding the situation in divine Science.
Human belief is a liar from the beginning, not deserving power. It says to human beings, “You are disgusting!” and they think they are. Nothing can change this state until the mindset changes. Mortal belief says, “You are happy!” and human beings think so. No circumstance can alter the situation until the thinking on the subject changes. Human belief says to mortals, “You are sick!” and this assertion manifests itself on the body as sickness. A change in either a health-belief or a belief in sickness affects the physical condition. Bear in mind, it is as necessary for a health-illusion, as for an illusion of sickness, to be instructed out of itself into the spiritual understanding of what constitutes health.
Faith is substantial and more advanced than belief. Faith is a chrysalis state of human thought in which metaphysical evidence, contradicting the testimony of physical senses, begins to appear, and Truth, the ever-present, becomes understood. Human thoughts have their degrees of comparison. Some thoughts are better than others. A belief in Truth is better than a belief in error, but no mortal belief is founded on the divine rock. Mortal testimony can be shaken. Until belief becomes faith, and faith becomes spiritual understanding, human thought has only a marginal connection to the actual or divine.
A human mindset carries out its own conditions. Sickness, sin, and death are nebulous realities of human conclusions. Life, Truth, and Love are the realities of divine Science. Realities dawn in faith and glow full-orbed in spiritual understanding. Clouds hide the sun but they can’t extinguish the sun, so false beliefs hide harmony but can’t destroy Science armed with faith, hope, and spiritual experience.
The way through which immortality and life are learned is not ecclesiastical but divine, not human but holy, not physical but metaphysical, not material but scientifically spiritual. Human philosophy, ethics, and superstition afford no demonstrable divine Principle by which human beings can escape from sin and mortality; yet to find safety in Love is what faith demands.
God never punishes us for doing right. Love never penalizes us for honest labor or deeds of kindness even if we are exposed to fatigue, cold, heat, and contagion. If we seem to incur the penalty through matter, this is but the false-ego, or human mind’s thinking. Unfair repercussions are not established by wisdom, and our nonconformity to injustice can nullify the penalty. Through this action of thought and its results upon the body, students will prove to themselves by small beginnings the grand verities of divine Science.
If you think weather harms health, your Mind-remedy is safe and sure. If you are a scientist of Spirit, symptoms of sickness are not apt to follow exposure to certain weather. However, if you believe in laws of mortality and their fatal effects when transgressed, you are not fit to conduct your own case and destroy the adverse effects.
Scientists may call on one another for metaphysical treatment. However, if the callers don’t receive relief or help, they can be confident that God will guide them to use appropriately the temporary and eternal treatments. Step by step, as we trust Spirit, we will find that “God is our shelter, our strength, ever ready to help in time of trouble.”
I advise students to be charitable and kind, not only toward differing forms of religion and medicine, but to the very people who hold these differing opinions.
Luke 11:1-13, 33-36
[Jesus said] “Don’t bargain with God. Be direct. Ask for what you need. This is not a cat-and-mouse, hide-and-seek game we’re in. If your little boy asks for a serving of fish, do you scare him with a live snake on his plate? If your little girl asks for an egg, do you trick her with a spider? As bad as you are, you wouldn’t think of such a thing—you’re at least decent to your own children. And don’t you think the Father who conceived you in love will give the Holy Spirit when you ask him?”
33-36 “No one lights a lamp, then hides it in a drawer. It’s put on a lamp stand so those entering the room have light to see where they’re going. Your eye is a lamp, lighting up your whole body. If you live wide-eyed in wonder and belief, your body fills up with light. If you live squinty-eyed in greed and distrust, your body is a dank cellar. Keep your eyes open, your lamp burning, so you don’t get musty and murky. Keep your life as well-lighted as your best-lighted room.”

Teachers do not indoctrinate but shed light on the student’s hidden energies and capabilities for good.
If prayer enables the thinking that human beings are made better merely by praying, prayer is an evil.
The human will which makes and works a lie, hiding the divine Principle of harmony, is destructive to health and is the cause of disease rather than its cure.
There is great danger in teaching Mind-healing indiscriminately, thus disregarding the morals of the student and caring only for the payments. Recall words that have been credited to Thomas Jefferson concerning slavery, “I tremble, when I remember that God is just.” I tremble whenever I see a person, for the petty reward of money, teaching his or her slight knowledge of Mind-power—increasing the probability of communicating the teacher’s own bad morals. This sad state deals pitilessly with a community unprepared for self-defense.
Jesus taught no mere theory, doctrine, or belief. It was the divine Principle of real being that he taught and practiced. His proof of spiritual enlightenment was not a form or system of religion and worship, but what can be termed the Science of Christ-spirit, working out the harmony of Life and Love.
Bear in mind, the higher nature of a person is not controlled by the lower more baneful nature; if it were the order of wisdom would be reversed. Our immature views of life hide eternal harmony and produce the problems of which we complain. Even though human beings believe in mortal laws—which by default causes people to disbelieve the Science of Mind—that believing does not make the mortal laws superior to the laws of Soul.
Only Science can explain the incredible good and evil elements that keep surfacing. Human beings must find protection in Truth in order to escape the errors of today. Nothing is more antagonistic to divine Science than a blind belief without understanding, for such belief hides Truth and builds on error.
Miracles are natural in Science, taking issue with popular religions. The scientific manifestation of power is from the divine nature and is not supernatural, since Science is an explanation of nature. The belief that the universe and people are governed in general by physical laws, but occasionally Spirit sets aside these laws, belittles omnipotent wisdom and gives to matter the precedence over Spirit.
It is contrary to divine Science to suppose that life is either physically or organically spiritual.
Truth never destroys God’s idea. Truth is eternal substance and maintains the true reflection.
Is it true that Christ is always reappearing? Is the wise person of today believed when he or she reads the light which heralds Truth’s eternal dawn and describes it radiance?
We bow before Christ, Truth, to receive more of Spirit’s reappearing.
As a physical, theoretical life-basis is found to be a misinterpretation of existence, the scientific and divine Principle of our spirituality dawns upon human thought. Consciousness is guided to “where the child was”—even to the birth of a new-old idea, to the spiritual sense of being and of what Life includes. Thus, the whole earth will be transformed by Truth as enlightened thought displaces the darkness of error.
Spiritual enlightenment confirms that God will not continue to be hidden from humanity.
