Golden text: Romans 8:2*

For the law of the Spirit of life has set you free in Christ Jesus from the law of sin and death.

John 6: 1-13

Jesus went away to the other side of the Sea of Galilee, which is the Sea of Tiberias. And a large crowd was following him, because they saw the signs that he was doing on the sick. Jesus went up on the mountain, and there he sat down with his disciples. Now the Passover, the feast of the Jews, was at hand. Lifting up his eyes, then, and seeing that a large crowd was coming toward him, Jesus said to Philip, “Where are we to buy bread, so that these people may eat?” He said this to test him, for he himself knew what he would do. Philip answered him, “Two hundred denarii worth of bread would not be enough for each of them to get a little.” One of his disciples, Andrew, Simon Peter’s brother, said to him, “There is a boy here who has five barley loaves and two fish, but what are they for so many?” 10 Jesus said, “Have the people sit down.” Now there was much grass in the place. So the men sat down, about five thousand in number. 11 Jesus then took the loaves, and when he had given thanks, he distributed them to those who were seated. So also the fish, as much as they wanted. 12 And when they had eaten their fill, he told his disciples, “Gather up the leftover fragments, that nothing may be lost.” 13 So they gathered them up and filled twelve baskets with fragments from the five barley loaves left by those who had eaten.

The law of Truth makes all things possible to Spirit. The laws of human mind attempt to render Spirit of no avail and demand obedience to materialist codes, thus departing from the basis of one God, one lawmaker. To suppose that God constitutes laws of turmoil and uncertainty is a mistake. Balance and peace are supported by nature and divine law, even when everything else says otherwise.

We ask, can we eat and live without natural laws and agriculture? The answer is no, and yet the Scriptures inform us that sin or error, first caused the condemnation of humankind to till the ground.[1] Can obedience to God remove the necessity to rely on material food, air, or technology? Truth never made error necessary nor devised a law to perpetuate error.

The supposed laws which result in weariness and disease are not God’s laws. The legitimate and only possible action of Truth is the production of harmony. Laws of nature are laws of Spirit; but human beings commonly recognize as law that which hides the power of Spirit. Divine Mind rightly demands our entire obedience, affection, and strength. No reservation is made for any lesser commitment. Obedience to truth gives us power and strength. Obedience to error coincides with loss of power.

Truth reveals universal healing, a method available to everyone, through spiritual law giving sight to the blind, hearing to the deaf, voice to the dumb, feet to the lame.[2] If Christian Science dishonors human belief, it honors spiritual understanding and the one Mind.

The so-called laws of health are simply theories that the human mind was trained to believe are laws. But if the premise for physical and mental health is limited to the human mind, the conclusions will be limited and erroneous. Truth makes no laws to regulate sickness, sin, and death, for these are unknown to Truth and should not be recognized as reality.

Belief produces the results of belief, and the results remain so long as the belief continues. The remedy consists in investigating the trouble thoroughly. Find, and cast out by denial the mistaken thinking which produces human problems. Make sure never to honor a flawed conviction by calling it law. Do not cede obedience to materialism. Affirm that the spiritual lawgivers, Truth, Life, and Love, are the only legitimate and eternal demands on us. Spirit enforces obedience through divine statutes.

Controlled by divine intelligence, we are harmonious and eternal

John 6: 16-21

When evening came, his disciples went down to the sea, 17 got into a boat, and started across the sea to Capernaum. It was now dark, and Jesus had not yet come to them. 18 The sea became rough because a strong wind was blowing. 19 When they had rowed about three or four miles, they saw Jesus walking on the sea and coming near the boat, and they were frightened. 20 But he said to them, “It is I; do not be afraid.” 21 Then they were glad to take him into the boat, and immediately the boat was at the land to which they were going.

Our moral and spiritual progress is monotonously slow if we constantly bounce back and forth between futile habits and the hope of forgiveness. Selfishness and stupidity cause constant retrogression. We must wake up to Christ’s demand; however, the waking generally causes suffering. We may even feel like we are drowning and struggling to stay above water. Through Christ’s precious love our efforts are rewarded with success.

“Work out your salvation,”[3] is the demand of Life and Love, for to this end God works with you, “Until I come back.”[4] Be patient, and “Let us not lose heart and grow weary and faint in acting nobly and doing right.”[5] Don’t go back to error, and don’t become apathetic or offended even though you are trying hard and there are no immediate rewards. The rewards will come.

When the difficult time has passed, you will experience a fullness of the good you have practiced. You will receive according to your efforts. Love is not in a hurry to rescue us from temptation, for Love means that we shall be tested and purified.

Final deliverance from error is not reached by taking the easy way. There are no shortcuts. Deliverance is also not experienced by attaching our faith without works, to someone else’s effort.

John 6: 24, 35-37

So when the crowd saw that Jesus was not there, nor his disciples, they themselves got into the boats and went to Capernaum, seeking Jesus.

35 Jesus said to them, “I am the bread of life; whoever comes to me shall not hunger, and whoever believes in me shall never thirst. 36 But I said to you that you have seen me and yet do not believe. 37 All that the Father gives me will come to me, and whoever comes to me I will never cast out.

Our immature views of life hide eternal harmony and produce the problems of which we complain. Even though human beings believe in mortal laws—which by default causes people to disbelieve the Science of Mind—that believing does not make the mortal laws superior to the laws of Soul. You would not believe food supplements were better for warding off disease than the influential Mind if you understood the Science of being.

It takes effort not to bury the spirit of divine Science in the burial clothes of its letter. If we would open the prison doors for the sick, we must first learn to bind up the broken-hearted. If we would heal by the Spirit, we must not hide the talent of spiritual healing behind ostentatious policies, ritualistic activities, or even somber piety. In the presence of a sick person, employ tender words and spiritual encouragement. Patiently remove all fears, without gushing theories, stereotyped clichés, and rigid arguments which are so many misrepresentations of divine Science, aflame with divine Love.

We seek Truth, not for “the loaves”[6] and fishes, and not like the Pharisees with the arrogance of professional status and display of academia.

Let us pay attention and participate in spirituality.

Jesus illustrated the power of divine Science to heal human minds and bodies. But this power was lost sight of and must again be spiritually discerned, taught, and demonstrated as commanded by Truth, with “accompanying signs.”[7] Its Science must be understood by as many as believe on Christ and spiritually comprehend Truth.

The infinite Truth of the Christ-cure has come to this age through a “gentle whisper.”[8] The beneficial effects of spirituality accelerate and develop through silent communications and divine anointing.

We are sometimes led to believe that darkness is as real as light. Science affirms darkness to be only a human sense of the absence of light. But, darkness loses the appearance of reality in the presence of light giving us reason to understand that sin and sorrow, disease and death are the supposed absence of Life, God, and lose their appearance in the presence of truth and love.

God is good and as the source of all being, God does not produce moral or physical deformity, therefore such deformity is not real but is illusion—is the mirage of error. Divine Science reveals these grand facts and on their basis Jesus demonstrated Life, never fearing or obeying error in any form.

The human mind’s methods for health never gets it right, whereas Truth regenerates this fleshly mind and feeds thought with the bread of Life.

If we were to derive all our conceptions of people from what is seen between the cradle and the grave, happiness and goodness would have no home for us. Bacterium would rob us of the flesh. Death would dissolve our substance. However, Paul writes: “The law of the Spirit of life set me free from the law of sin and death.”[9]

Take the time to look past the fading, sensational pictures. Gain the true sense of life. Rest your gaze on the unsearchable realm of Mind. Look ahead and act as possessing all power from Truth and Love in whom you have your being.

As humanity expands their correct views of God and creation, countless objects unseen before, will be seen. When you realize that Life is Spirit, never in nor of matter, this understanding will develop into self-completeness, finding all in God, good, and needing no other consciousness.

The universe of Spirit is peopled with spiritual beings and its government is divine Science. We each are the offspring of the highest qualities of Mind. We understand spiritual existence in proportion to our understanding of Truth and Love. Humans must gravitate Godward. Humans will become more humane as their desires and aims grow spiritual. As sin and mortality are discarded, humanity catches the broader interpretations of being and secures a lasting sense of the infinite.

This scientific sense of being, turning from personal views to Spirit, by no means suggests we are obsessed with Deity or we lose our identity. A scientific sense of being reveals a clearer distinct individuality, a wider sphere of thought and action, a more expansive and inclusive love, and a more permanent peace.
