Golden text: Isaiah 29:8*

As when a hungry man dreams, and behold, he is eating, and awakes with his hunger not satisfied, or as when a thirsty man dreams, and behold, he is drinking, and awakes faint, with his thirst not quenched, so shall the multitude of all the nations be that fight against Mount Zion.

I Samuel 13: 1-7

Saul lived for one year and then became king, and when he had reigned for two years over Israel, Saul chose three thousand men of Israel. Two thousand were with Saul in Michmash and the hill country of Bethel, and a thousand were with Jonathan in Gibeah of Benjamin. The rest of the people he sent home, every man to his tent. Jonathan defeated the garrison of the Philistines that was at Geba, and the Philistines heard of it. And Saul blew the trumpet throughout all the land, saying, “Let the Hebrews hear.” And all Israel heard it said that Saul had defeated the garrison of the Philistines, and also that Israel had become a stench to the Philistines. And the people were called out to join Saul at Gilgal.

And the Philistines mustered to fight with Israel, thirty thousand chariots and six thousand horsemen and troops like the sand on the seashore in multitude. They came up and encamped in Michmash, to the east of Beth-aven. When the men of Israel saw that they were in trouble (for the people were hard pressed), the people hid themselves in caves and in holes and in rocks and in tombs and in cisterns, and some Hebrews crossed the fords of the Jordan to the land of Gad and Gilead. Saul was still at Gilgal, and all the people followed him trembling.

If humankind would stop believing that God makes sickness and destruction, or makes man and woman capable of suffering on account of malevolence, the games of error would no longer be played and error’s destruction would be guaranteed. Seriously, if we accept that disease and destruction are God’s will, why do we try to fight or avoid disease and destruction? We can admit that God isn’t testing us, because God’s will is good and only producing goodness.

Looking at history, we can learn that the popular and misleading perceptions about the divine Being and character have originated in the human mind. Wrong notions about God do not originate in immortal Truth.

The following erroneous postulates are now considered to better comprehend spiritual facts:

  1. The belief that substance, life, and intelligence can be something separate from God.
  2. That person is both mental and physical.
  3. That Mind is both evil and good.
  4. That matter is intelligent, and people have physical bodies which are a part of self
  5. That material energy holds in itself the issues of life and death and is not only capable of experiencing pleasure and pain, but also capable of imparting these sensations.

From these mistaken postulates comes the decomposition of mortal bodies in what is termed death.

Mind is not an entity inside the brain with the power to go against Life, Truth, and Love, now or anytime. The real Mind cannot be evil and cannot channel evil, for Mind is God, good.

Unless our harmony and spirituality are becoming more apparent, we are not gaining the true idea of God. The body will reflect what governs it, whether it’s Truth or error, understanding or belief, Spirit or spirits. “Submit to God and be at peace with him.”[1] Be attentive, sober, and vigilant. The way is straight and narrow which leads to the understanding that God is the only Life. It is a fight with the flesh in which we must conquer sin, sickness, and decay, either here or hereafter—certainly before we can reach the realm of Spirit or life in God.

Psalm 94:12-15

Blessed is the man whom you discipline, O Lord,
and whom you teach out of your law,
13 to give him rest from days of trouble,
until a pit is dug for the wicked.
14 For the Lord will not forsake his people;
he will not abandon his heritage;
15 for justice will return to the righteous,
and all the upright in heart will follow it.

When mortals sin, limited theology admits God to be the healer of sin but not of sickness, whereas our great Master proved that Truth could save from sickness and sin.

Is the medicine of humankind a science or a cluster of theoretical human speculations? The prescription which succeeds in one instance but fails in another, is due to the different mental states of the patient. Only in divine Science can these mindsets be explained and comprehended. The power of Mind excels the power of drugs in the cure of disease. Mind’s rule and its perfection of operation never vary in Science. If you fail to succeed in any case, it is because you have not demonstrated the life of Christ, Truth, more in your own life. The more excellent way in every case is following the rule and proving the Principle of divine Science.

God, good, being ever-present, it follows in divine logic that evil, the suppositional opposite of good, is never present. Sin, sickness, and death are not transferable or scientific. In Science, individual good derived from God, the infinite All-in-all, may flow to human beings from other people or from those who are no longer on this earth, but evil is neither communicable nor scientific. A sinning earthly mortal is neither the reality of Life nor the channel through which truth passes to earth. The joys of interaction and socializing become the farce of sin when bad influences and suffering become contagious.

We can fight off the evils of dishonesty and craftiness, rather than fight people.

Matthew 8:18-27

Now when Jesus saw a crowd around him, he gave orders to go over to the other side. 19 And a scribe came up and said to him, “Teacher, I will follow you wherever you go.” 20 And Jesus said to him, “Foxes have holes, and birds of the air have nests, but the Son of Man has nowhere to lay his head.” 21 Another of the disciples said to him, “Lord, let me first go and bury my father.” 22 And Jesus said to him, “Follow me, and leave the dead to bury their own dead.”

23 And when he got into the boat, his disciples followed him. 24 And behold, there arose a great storm on the sea, so that the boat was being swamped by the waves; but he was asleep. 25 And they went and woke him, saying, “Save us, Lord; we are perishing.” 26 And he said to them, “Why are you afraid, O you of little faith?” Then he rose and rebuked the winds and the sea, and there was a great calm. 27 And the men marveled, saying, “What sort of man is this, that even winds and sea obey him?”

Are you willing to leave all for Truth and be treated like a criminal? Do you really desire to follow Christ in all ways? Probably not! So why make long prayers about Christ’s way if you do not care to walk in the footsteps of Jesus? If unwilling to follow his example, why bother saying, “In His name?” Consistent prayer is the will to do right. Prayer means that we desire to walk and will walk in the light so far as we receive it, even if it’s uncomfortable. To wait patiently on the Lord is to let Spirit reward our real intentions.

Jesus reached his glory alone, in speechless agony. He explored the way and we all have the same cup of poignant effort to drink. We are not spared a single experience if we follow faithfully.

We walk in the footsteps of Truth and Love by following the example of Jesus in the understanding of divine metaphysics. Spirituality is the basis of true healing. Whatever holds human thought in line with selfless love, receives directly the divine power.

John 18:36

Jesus answered, “My kingdom is not of this world. If my kingdom were of this world, my servants would have been fighting, that I might not be delivered over to the Jews. But my kingdom is not from the world.”

The nothingness of error, which is in proportion to its wickedness, is seen when we are conscious of Truth. People, who touch the fringe of Christ’s garment[2] and master their illegitimate convictions, their angers, and their fight-or-flight reactions, will rejoice in the proof of healing—in a sweet and certain sense that God is Love. It is a sad day for the person who professes to practice and be faithful to divine Science but fails to strangle the serpent of sin as well as of sickness! They are still living in their self-sabotaging comfort-zones and human passions. They are in the turbulent sea of error, not struggling to lift their drowning heads above the enveloping waves of hypocrisy, blind faith, sloth, and egotism.

What happens when we don’t fight and destroy sin? What happens when we don’t destroy finite convictions or mortal status quos? Our mental and physical state will perceive or justify suffering. The sin, which you think you love or is a part of you, comes back with accelerated force, for the devil knows its time is short. The Scriptural reference to time reaffirms the fact that evil is temporal, not eternal. The dragon is at last stung to death by its own malice. How many periods of torture are required to remove all sin will depend on sin’s stubbornness.

In Science, our indestructibility depends upon God, good, and follows as a necessary consequence of the immortality of good.

A rule in Science is to fight against error and negate personal finite reasoning with infinite Truth. This rule clearly interprets God as divine Principle—as Life, epitomized by the Father; as Truth, represented by the Child; as Love, represented by the Mother. Every human being at some point, here or hereafter, must battle with and overcome the mortal belief in a power opposed to God, good.

The beliefs of isolatable powers, the fight-and-flight nature, or morphing substances are flimsy propaganda, yet mesmerizing. So we ask, who will deny that these are the errors which Truth must and will annihilate?

Who would hold a calculator in their hand and pray for the science of mathematics to solve a math problem? The rule is already established and it is our responsibility to work out the solution. Will we ask divine Principle to solve what has already been solved? The Science of being is intact. We can make our minds and bodies available to follow God’s rule. We can receive Love’s blessing and work out our own salvation.

A text in the book of Ecclesiastes conveys the scientific mental thought, especially when the word duty is omitted. Quoting from Moffatt, “Stand in awe of God, obey his orders: that is everything, for every man.”[3] In other words, love God and keep Mind’s commandments: for this is the whole of man and woman in Soul’s image and likeness. Divine Love is infinite. Therefore, all that really exists is in and of God and manifests Truth’s love.
