bible study imageSubject: Renewal

Golden text: II Corinthians 4:16*

So we do not lose heart. Though our outer self is wasting away, our inner self is being renewed day by day.

Genesis 43:1-4

Now the famine was severe in the land. And when they had eaten the grain that they had brought from Egypt, their father [Jacob] said to them, “Go again, buy us a little food.” But Judah said to him, “The man solemnly warned us, saying, ‘You shall not see my face unless your brother is with you.’ If you will send our brother with us, we will go down and buy you food.

Genesis 43:11-15

11 Then their father Israel said to them, “If it must be so, then do this: take some of the choice fruits of the land in your bags, and carry a present down to the man, a little balm and a little honey, gum, myrrh, pistachio nuts, and almonds. 12 Take double the money with you. Carry back with you the money that was returned in the mouth of your sacks. Perhaps it was an oversight. 13 Take also your brother, and arise, go again to the man. 14 May God Almighty grant you mercy before the man, and may he send back your other brother and Benjamin. And as for me, if I am bereaved of my children, I am bereaved.” 15 So the men took this present, and they took double the money with them, and Benjamin. They arose and went down to Egypt and stood before Joseph.

Benjamin (Jacob’s son). A physical belief as to life, substance, and mind; human knowledge or human mind devoted to matter; arrogance, envy; fame; illusion; a false belief; error masquerading as the possessor of life, strength, purpose, motivation, and the power to act…. Renewal of affections; self-offering; an improved state of human mind; the introduction of a more spiritual origin; a gleam of the infinite idea of the infinite Principle; a spiritual type; that which comforts, consoles, and supports.

You uncover sin, not in order to hurt, but in order to bless the human being; and a right motive has its reward. Hidden sin is spiritual wickedness in high places. The masquerader in this Science thanks God that there is no evil, yet serves evil in the name of good.

What are the motives behind prayer? Do we pray to improve ourselves, or to benefit those who hear us? Do we meditate to enlighten the infinite? Do we pray so other people will see us? Is prayer beneficial? Yes, the aspiration that hungers after righteousness[1] is blessed by our heavenly Parent. The desire for spirituality does not return to us void.

Genesis 43:16, 26, 29, 33-34

16 When Joseph saw Benjamin with them, he said to the steward of his house, “Bring the men into the house, and slaughter an animal and make ready, for the men are to dine with me at noon.”

26 When Joseph came home, they brought into the house to him the present that they had with them and bowed down to him to the ground

29 And he lifted up his eyes and saw his brother Benjamin, his mother’s son, and said, “Is this your youngest brother, of whom you spoke to me? God be gracious to you, my son!”

33 And they sat before him, the firstborn according to his birthright and the youngest according to his youth. And the men looked at one another in amazement. 34 Portions were taken to them from Joseph’s table, but Benjamin’s portion was five times as much as any of theirs. And they drank and were merry with him.

All nature teaches God’s love to us, but we can’t love God supremely and set our whole affections on spiritual things while loving the material or trusting in it more than in the spiritual.

Educate the children to form habits agreeable to moral and spiritual laws. Children are better prepared to meet and master the limitations imposed by physical laws—especially the laws that breed disease and disorder—when they are obedient to moral and spiritual laws.

Parents, if you allow your children incessantly to play computer games, want stuff, or be picky, don’t complain later in life if your children are complicated or frivolous. Be accountable. Worry less “about your life, what you will eat or drink; or about your body, what you will wear,”[2] and pro-actively grow together in the understanding of man and woman’s higher nature. Children can still retain their innocence while maturing. You will do more than imaginable when you also continue to mature along with the children.

Ignorant of the fact that human thinking produces disease and all its symptoms, ordinary physicians are liable to increase disease with their own mind. Instead, they can work to destroy disease through the power of the divine Mind.

Promising relationships correlate with the motive to participate in activities adapted to improve society.

The beautiful in character is also the good, securing indissolubly the links of affection.

Genesis 49:1, 27

Then Jacob called his sons and said, “Gather yourselves together, that I may tell you what shall happen to you in days to come.

27 “Benjamin is a ravenous wolf, in the morning devouring the prey and at evening dividing the spoil.”

From 21st Century Science and Health

It is enlightened sense that understands God. Even though Truth is unjustly distorted, it will not forever be hidden from the enlightened sense of the people. The sick, the disabled, and the blind look to divine Science and receive blessing.

Pay attention: it is the brutish, animal instinct in human beings which triggers them to devour each other.

The spiritual idea isn’t devious, but evil will habitually impose its own shifty nature and methods on the true idea. Error’s malicious cruel instinct incites humans to kill each other morally and physically, and worse yet, to blame the innocent for the crime. This last weakness of sin will pull its perpetrator into the black hole of oblivion.

Romans 11:1-6

I [Paul] ask, then, has God rejected his people? By no means! For I myself am an Israelite, a descendant of Abraham, a member of the tribe of Benjamin. God has not rejected his people whom he foreknew. Do you not know what the Scripture says of Elijah, how he appeals to God against Israel? “Lord, they have killed your prophets, they have demolished your altars, and I alone am left, and they seek my life.” But what is God’s reply to him? “I have kept for myself seven thousand men who have not bowed the knee to Baal.” So too at the present time there is a remnant, chosen by grace. But if it is by grace, it is no longer on the basis of works; otherwise grace would no longer be grace.

From 21st Century Science and Health

It is physical sensation, and not Soul, that triggers an overexcited passion for God. Let spiritual perception be our guide, which in turn results in an improved experience. Selflessness and purity are connected to a better life. Fanaticism and self-satisfied devotion do not reveal spirituality. God is not influenced by human beings, no matter how radical you are. The divine ear is not an auditory nerve. The Divine is the all-hearing and all-knowing Mind, recognizing and supplying our every need.

Prayer can be dangerous if it tempts us to voice desires that aren’t real. We become involuntary hypocrites when we use prayer to console ourselves, while yet make negligible effort to break out of illusory mindsets. We can’t stay in deceptive mindsets, thinking we can pray for forgiveness later. Hypocrisy is fatal to religion.

Romans 12:1-9

I appeal to you therefore, brothers, by the mercies of God, to present your bodies as a living sacrifice, holy and acceptable to God, which is your spiritual worship. Do not be conformed to this world, but be transformed by the renewal of your mind, that by testing you may discern what is the will of God, what is good and acceptable and perfect. For by the grace given to me I say to everyone among you not to think of himself more highly than he ought to think, but to think with sober judgment, each according to the measure of faith that God has assigned. For as in one body we have many members, and the members do not all have the same function, so we, though many, are one body in Christ, and individually members one of another. Having gifts that differ according to the grace given to us, let us use them: if prophecy, in proportion to our faith; if service, in our serving; the one who teaches, in his teaching; the one who exhorts, in his exhortation; the one who contributes, in generosity; the one who leads, with zeal; the one who does acts of mercy, with cheerfulness. Let love be genuine. Abhor what is evil; hold fast to what is good.

From 21st Century Science and Health

Mind-science teaches mortals “Don’t get tired of helping others.”[3] It dissipates fatigue to do good deeds. In service to our Maker, generosity will not deprive us, likewise, holding back our wealth does not make us richer. Our strength is increased with our increased understanding of truth. Strength is not minimized by voicing truth.

Debra Lynne Katz, a p rofessional clairvoyant reader, healer, and spiritual counselor, says in her book, You are Psychic: The Art of Clairvoyant Reading & Healing, “We are all energetically connected.” Katz also shares with readers the importance of not continuously expecting to be strengthened by other people’s energy, “The best energy, or fuel, for your body is your own.”[4] This is valuable advice, preparing human thought to take the next step of recognizing divine Spirit as the infinite source of divine strength and immortality. Human energy is mortal and claims separate spirits. Divine energy unites everyone’s consciousness to God, the one immortal Spirit.

The unlimited never connects with the limited. The eternal never joins the temporal. Immortality never participates with mortality. The divine Ego, or individuality, is reflected in all spiritual individuality from the infinitesimal to the infinite.

Anything in the human mind is mortal. To the five physical senses, a person appears to be matter and mind united. Divine Science reveals man and woman as the idea of God. Science supports the fact that the physical senses are capricious and illusory. Divine Science shows that it is impossible for congealed atoms to be person even though interwoven with matter’s higher echelon called brain (misnamed mind). The genuine and total person, the spiritual idea of being is indestructible and eternal. If it were otherwise, person would be annihilated.

It is difficult for the narcissistic attitude to accept divine Science, because Science exposes the nonbeing of a separate self. The sooner error is reduced to its native nothingness, the sooner realness appears and our genuine being is understood. The destruction of error is by no means the destruction of Truth or Love, but is the acknowledgment of them.

Science reveals infinity and the fatherhood and motherhood of Love, therefore, the ideas of God in universal being are complete and forever expressed. Human ability is slow to perceive and realize God’s creation and the divine power and presence which go with it (demonstrating its spiritual origin). Mortals can never know the infinite until they throw off the old self and reach the spiritual image and likeness. What can fathom infinity! How can we describe God, Life, “Until we all reach unity in the faith and in the knowledge of the Son of God and become mature, attaining to the whole measure of the fullness of Christ”?[5]

Golden text: Psalms 103:6*

The Lord works righteousness and justice for all who are oppressed.

Luke 11: 1-4, 37-42

Now Jesus was praying in a certain place, and when he finished, one of his disciples said to him, “Lord, teach us to pray, as John taught his disciples.” And he said to them, “When you pray, say:

“Father, hallowed be your name.
Your kingdom come.
Give us each day our daily bread,
and forgive us our sins,
for we ourselves forgive everyone who is indebted to us.
And lead us not into temptation.”

37 While Jesus was speaking, a Pharisee asked him to dine with him, so he went in and reclined at table. 38 The Pharisee was astonished to see that he did not first wash before dinner. 39 And the Lord said to him, “Now you Pharisees cleanse the outside of the cup and of the dish, but inside you are full of greed and wickedness. 40 You fools! Did not he who made the outside make the inside also? 41 But give as alms those things that are within, and behold, everything is clean for you.

42 “But woe to you Pharisees! For you tithe mint and rue and every herb, and neglect justice and the love of God. These you ought to have done, without neglecting the others.

21st Century Science and Health**

On an individual and collective mission, Jesus’ lifework was done in justice to himself and in mercy to humanity. Jesus gave an excellent example of reconciliation, however, he did not do our work for us. Jesus showed us how to be responsible for our own thoughts and actions. He acted boldly, not only against the self-authorized evidence of human perceptions, but also Pharisaical dogma and practices. With healing power, Jesus proved the powerlessness of all that opposed goodness.

Luke 18: 1-8

And [Jesus] told them a parable to the effect that they ought always to pray and not lose heart. He said, “In a certain city there was a judge who neither feared God nor respected man. And there was a widow in that city who kept coming to him and saying, ‘Give me justice against my adversary.’ For a while he refused, but afterward he said to himself, ‘Though I neither fear God nor respect man, yet because this widow keeps bothering me, I will give her justice, so that she will not beat me down by her continual coming.’” And the Lord said, “Hear what the unrighteous judge says. And will not God give justice to his elect, who cry to him day and night? Will he delay long over them? I tell you, he will give justice to them speedily. Nevertheless, when the Son of Man comes, will he find faith on earth?”

We should relieve our minds from the depressing thought that we have violated a human law and must of necessity pay the penalty. Let us reassure ourselves with the law of Love. God never punishes us for doing right. Love never penalizes us for honest labor or deeds of kindness, even if we are exposed to fatigue, cold, heat, contagion. If we seem to incur the penalty through matter, this is but the false-ego, or human mind’s thinking. Unfair repercussions are not established by wisdom, and our nonconformity to injustice can nullify the penalty. Through this action of thought and its results upon the body, students will prove to themselves, by small beginnings, the grand verities of divine Science.

We are sustained under all circumstances as we have faith in the divine Principle of health and as we spiritually understand God. The ordinary appeal to have faith in the world’s ways and means must yield to faith in the all-might of infinite Spirit.

Jeremiah 4: 1-4

“If you return, O Israel,
declares the Lord,
to me you should return.
If you remove your detestable things from my presence,
and do not waver,
and if you swear, ‘As the Lord lives,’
in truth, in justice, and in righteousness,
then nations shall bless themselves in him,
and in him shall they glory.”

For thus says the Lord to the men of Judah and Jerusalem:

“Break up your fallow ground,
and sow not among thorns.
Circumcise yourselves to the Lord;
remove the foreskin of your hearts,
O men of Judah and inhabitants of Jerusalem;
lest my wrath go forth like fire,
and burn with none to quench it,
because of the evil of your deeds.”

Jeremiah 9:23-24

23 Thus says the Lord: “Let not the wise man boast in his wisdom, let not the mighty man boast in his might, let not the rich man boast in his riches, 24 but let him who boasts boast in this, that he understands and knows me, that I am the Lord who practices steadfast love, justice, and righteousness in the earth. For in these things I delight, declares the Lord.”

21st Century Science and Health

Finite beliefs can’t do justice to Truth in any direction. It limits all things and would compress infinite Mind into a skull bone. Such belief can’t understand or worship the infinite. The effort to accommodate beginnings and endings tries to break up Soul and substance. It tries to divide the one Spirit into persons and souls.

Justice requires reformation.

Our laws will eventually take cognizance of mental crime and no longer apply legal rulings entirely too physical offences. It will go down in history that how we think or what we think, directly or indirectly affects action, including the action of what we call physical bodies. The medical field is even somewhat recognizing the power of metaphysics. Dr. Dharma Singh Khalsa, M.D., a pioneer in integrative medicine, testifies that, “Meditation is a wondrously powerful medical modality…the meditation that I teach employs not just patients’ mental energies, but also their physical energies”[1]

Whoever uses their developed mental energies or powers to commit opportune atrocities is never safe. God will arrest those people. Divine justice will confine them. Their sins will be millstones about their necks, weighing them down to the depths of disgrace and death. The aggravation of error foretells its doom and confirms the ancient axiom: Whom the gods would destroy, they first make mad.

Conventional medicine advocates drugs, even harmful drugs, and is far from divine Science. Learning the dangers or the uselessness of intrusive medicine, humanity looks in new directions for healing. Humanity begins to understand the power of mind over matter and the importance of better thinking. Be aware: some thought influences can pretend to be good or in our best interest, but are just as dangerous as harmful drugs. This is mental malpractice and is criminal, working against common humanity, honesty, and justice. Divine Mind-practice requires human mind to yield to the divine consciousness and to unite with the spiritual thought moving heavenward.

Deuteronomy 16:17-20

17 Every man shall give as he is able, according to the blessing of the Lord your God that he has given you.

18 “You shall appoint judges and officers in all your towns that the Lord your God is giving you, according to your tribes, and they shall judge the people with righteous judgment. 19 You shall not pervert justice. You shall not show partiality, and you shall not accept a bribe, for a bribe blinds the eyes of the wise and subverts the cause of the righteous. 20 Justice, and only justice, you shall follow, that you may live and inherit the land that the Lord your God is giving you.

21st Century Science and Health

Civil laws are created to implement fairness and equity between the rights of the sexes but more progress is needed, to say the least. Civilization and Science stand strong on the side of justice and encourage the elimination of discrimination, however, every time an effort is made to remedy unfairness, we must be alert that the effort doesn’t encourage difficulties of greater magnitude. Higher aims and motives, as well as improved mental character, must be considered as the feasible and rational means of progress.

Global injustice between the sexes is a crying evil caused by the arrogance and inhumanity of mortals. We must exercise our faith in the direction taught by the Apostle James, when he said: “Religion that God and Father accepts as pure and faultless is this: to look after orphans and widows in their distress and to keep oneself from being polluted by the world.”[2]

Allow unselfishness, goodness, mercy, justice, health, holiness, and love to control your mind and body.

This is an era when we live and think in terms of science, therefore proof and demonstration, instead of opinion and dogma, are called upon to support spirituality, “making wise the simple.”[3]

The goodness we live is the nemesis of negative inclinations. Spirituality in action, demonstrates the government of God, good, in which is no power to act against life, truth, and love.

And we solemnly promise to be mindful, to pray for that Mind to be in us which was also in Christ Jesus; to do to others as we would have them do to us;[4] and to be merciful, just, and pure.
