Golden text: Psalm 94:12-14*

Blessed is the man whom you discipline, O Lord, and whom you teach out of your law,
13 to give him rest from days of trouble, until a pit is dug for the wicked. 14 For the Lord will not forsake his people; he will not abandon his heritage;

Deuteronomy 4:1-10

“And now, O Israel, listen to the statutes and the rules that I am teaching you, and do them, that you may live, and go in and take possession of the land that the Lord, the God of your fathers, is giving you. You shall not add to the word that I command you, nor take from it, that you may keep the commandments of the Lord your God that I command you. Your eyes have seen what the Lord did at Baal-peor, for the Lord your God destroyed from among you all the men who followed the Baal of Peor. But you who held fast to the Lord your God are all alive today. See, I have taught you statutes and rules, as the Lord my God commanded me, that you should do them in the land that you are entering to take possession of it. Keep them and do them, for that will be your wisdom and your understanding in the sight of the peoples, who, when they hear all these statutes, will say, ‘Surely this great nation is a wise and understanding people.’ For what great nation is there that has a god so near to it as the Lord our God is to us, whenever we call upon him? And what great nation is there, that has statutes and rules so righteous as all this law that I set before you today?

“Only take care, and keep your soul diligently, lest you forget the things that your eyes have seen, and lest they depart from your heart all the days of your life. Make them known to your children and your children’s children— 10 how on the day that you stood before the Lord your God at Horeb, the Lord said to me, ‘Gather the people to me, that I may let them hear my words, so that they may learn to fear me all the days that they live on the earth, and that they may teach their children so.’

Listen and be wise. You can escape from error. You can also detect the unfaithful people who saw the danger and gave no warning.

Deuteronomy 4:35-40

35 To you it was shown, that you might know that the Lord is God; there is no other besides him. 36 Out of heaven he let you hear his voice, that he might discipline you. And on earth he let you see his great fire, and you heard his words out of the midst of the fire. 37 And because he loved your fathers and chose their offspring after them and brought you out of Egypt with his own presence, by his great power, 38 driving out before you nations greater and mightier than you, to bring you in, to give you their land for an inheritance, as it is this day, 39 know therefore today, and lay it to your heart, that the Lord is God in heaven above and on the earth beneath; there is no other. 40 Therefore you shall keep his statutes and his commandments, which I command you today, that it may go well with you and with your children after you, and that you may prolong your days in the land that the Lord your God is giving you for all time.”

Hard work, deprivations, exposures, and all troublesome conditions, if without sin, can be experienced without suffering. Your true responsibility can be fulfilled without harm to yourself. If you sprain the muscles or wound the flesh, your remedy is at hand. Mind decides whether or not the flesh will be discolored, painful, and inflamed.

You say that you have not slept well or you have no self-discipline. You are a law to yourself. Saying this and believing it, you will suffer in proportion to your certainty and fear. Your sufferings are not the penalty for having broken a law of matter, for it is a law of human mind which you have disobeyed. You say or think, because you have eaten salty food, that you must be thirsty, and you are thirsty accordingly, while the opposite thought would produce the opposite result.

Hosea 7:8-16

Ephraim mixes himself with the peoples; Ephraim is a cake not turned. Strangers devour his strength, and he knows it not; gray hairs are sprinkled upon him, and he knows it not. 10 The pride of Israel testifies to his face; yet they do not return to the Lord their God, nor seek him, for all this. 11 Ephraim is like a dove, silly and without sense, calling to Egypt, going to Assyria. 12 As they go, I will spread over them my net; I will bring them down like birds of the heavens; I will discipline them according to the report made to their congregation. 13 Woe to them, for they have strayed from me! Destruction to them, for they have rebelled against me! I would redeem them, but they speak lies against me. 14 They do not cry to me from the heart, but they wail upon their beds; for grain and wine they gash themselves; they rebel against me. 15 Although I trained and strengthened their arms, yet they devise evil against me. 16 They return, but not upward; they are like a treacherous bow; their princes shall fall by the sword because of the insolence of their tongue. This shall be their derision in the land of Egypt.

With due respect, here are some statements to think about.

“The materials we need to reach a new level of discourse are in our grasp; we have only to abandon outmoded approaches/disciplines to achieve an enlightening beginning for a new science.” From The Anthropology of Medicine: From Culture to Method, Third Edition.[1]

“The Starting Point of Biblical Theology: We have already observed that every scholarly endeavor inevitably is based upon presuppositions.”[2] HarperCollins Bible Dictionary.

“We physicians often pay lip service to the importance of the mind in health and illness, yet in practice we equate it with the brain. This is obvious in our reliance on drugs when mental problems arise…A refreshing contrast is alternative or complementary medicine, which has emerged as a major social force shaping medical care in the United States.” From Reinventing Medicine: Beyond Mind/Body to a New Era of Healing.[3]

“Both The Social Theory and The New Genetics have proved in their different ways to be blind alleys, quite unable to deliver on their promise. Their failure is ‘The Fall’ of modern medicine.”[4] James Le Fanu, M.D., medical columnist, London.

Hebrews 12:1-13 (The Message)

1-3 Do you see what this means—all these pioneers who blazed the way, all these veterans cheering us on? It means we’d better get on with it. Strip down, start running—and never quit! No extra spiritual fat, no parasitic sins. Keep your eyes on Jesus, who both began and finished this race we’re in. Study how he did it. Because he never lost sight of where he was headed—that exhilarating finish in and with God—he could put up with anything along the way: Cross, shame, whatever. And now he’s there, in the place of honor, right alongside God. When you find yourselves flagging in your faith, go over that story again, item by item, that long litany of hostility he plowed through. That will shoot adrenaline into your souls!

4-11 In this all-out match against sin, others have suffered far worse than you, to say nothing of what Jesus went through—all that bloodshed! So don’t feel sorry for yourselves. Or have you forgotten how good parents treat children, and that God regards you as his children?

My dear child, don’t shrug off God’s discipline, but don’t be crushed by it either.
It’s the child he loves that he disciplines; the child he embraces, he also corrects.

God is educating you; that’s why you must never drop out. He’s treating you as dear children. This trouble you’re in isn’t punishment; it’s training, the normal experience of children. Only irresponsible parents leave children to fend for themselves. Would you prefer an irresponsible God? We respect our own parents for training and not spoiling us, so why not embrace God’s training so we can truly live? While we were children, our parents did what seemed best to them. But God is doing what is best for us, training us to live God’s holy best. At the time, discipline isn’t much fun. It always feels like it’s going against the grain. Later, of course, it pays off handsomely, for it’s the well-trained who find themselves mature in their relationship with God.

12-13 So don’t sit around on your hands! No more dragging your feet! Clear the path for long-distance runners so no one will trip and fall, so no one will step in a hole and sprain an ankle. Help each other out. And run for it!

From 21st Century Science and Health

As we shift our faith and attention from the pains and pleasures of temporal sense to the study of the Science of divine Mind, we get better instead of worse. Suffering, imprisonment, and death are not natural disciplinarians. The whole human family can be redeemed through the excellence of Christ—through the perception and acceptance of Truth. For this magnificent result, Christian Science lights the torch of spiritual understanding.

Outside of divine Science all is relative. Earthly experience exposes the relativity of error, indirectly leading to the infinite capacities of Truth. Spiritual beings agree with the absolute and harmonious Principle of being. Immortality does not sin, suffer, or die and our spiritual experiences will multiply instead of diminish as God’s kingdom comes on earth. The spiritual way leads to Life instead of to death and we realize our God-given dominion to overcome temporal limitations.

Love’s discipline is wholesome. As Love corrects us, we advance toward justice, peace, and purity, which are the milestones of Science. Beholding the infinite tasks of truth, we pause—wait on God. Then we make every effort to improve for the better. Spiritualized thought feels creative, free, and inspired, touching the divine glory.

In order to understand more, we must put into practice what we already know. Truth is provable when understood, and good is not understood until proven. If “faithful with a few things,”[5] we will be put in charge of many things. However, the neglected or unused talent rots or is lost. When the sick or the sinning realize their need of what they don’t have, they will be a receptor to divine Science. The human mind then thinks on things better than disease or negativity. Thought is attracted toward Soul and as a result, superficial perceptions and the body do not become distractions. The true idea of God gives the true understanding of Life and Love. Spiritual fact softens the hardness of death. Spiritual fact removes perversity and the delusion that there are other minds. Spiritual fact destroys mortality.

The effects of spiritual Science are not so much seen as felt. It is the “gentle whisper”[6] of Truth expressing itself. We are either neglecting this expression or we are attentive to it and being improved by it. Willingness to become as little children[7] and to leave the old for the new, prepares thought to receive the advanced idea. To cheerfully leave behind the false imprints, and contentedly let them disappear, is the attitude that helps to precipitate the ultimate harmony. The purification of feelings and intent is a proof of progress. “Blessed are the pure in heart, for they will see God.”[8]

“People are often unaware of their own unawareness” ― Thomas Gilovich, Heuristics and Biases: The Psychology of Intuitive Judgment

“and somehow, the more we would face our own demons of pride, greed, and lust, the more gentle and kind we would become toward others, the less judgmental, the less harsh, the more empathetic, because we realize as never before that everyone is pitched in an invisible inner battle, and the battle isn’t easy for anyone.” ― Brian D. McLaren, Finding Our Way Again: The Return of the Ancient Practices

I was at Central Park in New York City with my 3-year old granddaughter. She was playing in the sand with other children.

There was a water spigot, from which the children would fill pails of water.

“Wait,” I told my granddaughter who was edging her way to the flowing water. “This girl got to the water faucet first, you need to wait.”

A head of curly longish hair, turned quickly to me and said, “I’m not a girl. I’m a boy.”

I said, “Thank you for telling me, now I know.”

And then thought, kudos to the parent who put this child in pink shorts.

My first response was unconscious. I made a quick judgement based on long curly hair and pink shorts, that the child was a girl.

My second response was conscious. I was grateful for the boy’s correction toward me.

The boy’s response could have been unconscious or conscious. It didn’t matter because my granddaughter waited her turn, and the boy got his water before rambling off to continue having a hee-haw heck of a time with his buddies.

This whole episode resembled stories told in the Bible, of a patient God caring for everyone, turning anger away, yet fulfilling the truth.

Please read in your Bible Psalm 78:1-29

Online at Psychology Today, David Ludden Ph.D. posted, “The Psychology of First Impressions, August 8, 2017. Ludden describes 4 facial features, as reported on by psychologist Leslie Zebrowitz of Brandeis University, that affect our first impressions when meeting others.

As reported, “Although first impressions are notoriously prone to error, we just can’t stop ourselves from making them. It only takes a tenth of a second to form a judgment about another person’s character, even from a still photograph.”

However, Ludden also wrote, “As Zebrowitz points out, incorrect first impressions can have significant social consequences.”

The social consequences can be positive when our impressions are filtered with a knowledge of a compassionate understanding God, also known as divine Mind. We know God through our spiritual senses. Having a God makes me aware of my human unawareness. I can better stop myself from making quick bad judgments.

Spiritual senses don’t make judgments based on physical appearances, but on a pure God and on our ability to stay connected to that God. We can correct and be corrected without too much a-do. Spiritual senses allow us to judge or read thoughts.

Christ Jesus read the thoughts of others and found those who were willing to follow his faith.

Please read Matthew 4:18-22

Jesus was even able to know the thoughts of a man before he laid eyes on the man.

From 21st Century Science and Health

The term “sixth sense” has been used to describe intuitive vision, or knowingness, when more accurately it could be called “first sense.” Our intuitive perception discerns essential facts. Science enables a person to read the human mind, but not as a clairvoyant. Science enables one to heal through Mind, but not as a hypnotist.

Material wealth, fame, and social organizations have no authority or influence in the presence of God. We attain clearer views of Principle as we break up cliques, level monetary wealth with honesty, and let worth be judged according to wisdom. We also get better views of humanity as we remove our self from biased personal perceptions.

The first impression, made on a mind, whether good or bad, is a capable detective of individual character. Certain minds meet only to separate through simultaneous repulsion. They are enemies without the preliminary offence.

It is needless for the thought or for the person holding the thought to be individually and consciously present. Although individuals have passed away, their mental environment remains to be discerned and described. Even when someone has moved far away and has been forgotten, their vibrations or whisperings are still in the general atmosphere of human mind.

The computer doesn’t know what software programs are installed on its hardware. Outer-space isn’t aware of the comets propelling through its atmosphere. The sea is unaware of the oil buried under its waters. Yet this stuff is all there. Do not assume that any mental concept is gone because you do not think of it. The strong impressions produced on human mind by friendship or by any intense feeling are lasting, and mind-readers can perceive and reproduce these impressions. The true concept is never lost.

We learn in Christian Science that all inharmony of human mind (or body) is a false impression, possessing no reality or identity, although it seems to be real and identifiable.

Flesh. An error or mistake of physical belief; misinterpretation of life, substance, and intelligence; a false impression; a belief that matter has sensation.

When the first symptoms of disease appear, resist the assertions of the fleshly impressions with divine Science. Let your higher sense of justice destroy the false process of human opinions which you name law, and then you will not be confined to a hospital room, or checked into a hospice facility, to suffer paying the last penalty demanded by error. “Settle matters quickly with your adversary who is taking you to court.”[1] Do not let your thought become a captive audience to the demands of sin or sickness. Turn away from that which falsely pressures us, with the enduring conviction that those pressures are illegitimate. God is no more the author of sickness than of sin. You have no law of God to support the necessity either of sin or sickness, but you have divine authority for denying that necessity and healing the sick.

Jesus demonstrated Christ. Jesus proved that Christ is the correct impression or interpretation of God—the Holy Spirit, or Counselor, revealing the divine Principle, Love, and leading into all truth.

When it is learned that the spiritual sense, and not the material, conveys the impressions of Mind, then Being will be understood and found to be harmonious.

The nature of spirituality is peaceful and blessed. In order to enter into the realm of Spirit, the anchor of hope must be thrown past the veil of matter into the Shekinah that Jesus showed us. This advance beyond superficial thinking comes through the joys and triumphs of the righteous, as well as through their sorrows and afflictions. We must leave mortal impressions of fleshly being, and advance into immortal expressions of spiritual being.

Divine Love corrects and governs.

The human body and consciousness are temporal, but the real substance and consciousness are spiritual and eternal. Spiritual consciousness is not lost, but found through this explanation; for the conscious infinitude of existence and of all identity is thereby discerned and remains unchanged. It is impossible for us to lose anything that is real, when God is all and eternally ours.

Golden text: Hebrews 4:12*

For the word of God is living and active, sharper than any two-edged sword, piercing to the division of soul and of spirit, of joints and of marrow, and discerning the thoughts and intentions of the heart.

Numbers 20:14-21

Moses sent messengers from Kadesh to the king of Edom: “Thus says your brother Israel: You know all the hardship that we have met: 15 how our fathers went down to Egypt, and we lived in Egypt a long time. And the Egyptians dealt harshly with us and our fathers. 16 And when we cried to the Lord, he heard our voice and sent an angel and brought us out of Egypt. And here we are in Kadesh, a city on the edge of your territory. 17 Please let us pass through your land. We will not pass through field or vineyard, or drink water from a well. We will go along the King’s Highway. We will not turn aside to the right hand or to the left until we have passed through your territory.” 18 But Edom said to him, “You shall not pass through, lest I come out with the sword against you.” 19 And the people of Israel said to him, “We will go up by the highway, and if we drink of your water, I and my livestock, then I will pay for it. Let me only pass through on foot, nothing more.” 20 But he said, “You shall not pass through.” And Edom came out against them with a large army and with a strong force. 21 Thus Edom refused to give Israel passage through his territory, so Israel turned away from him.

Sword. The idea of Truth; justice; Revenge; anger.

Critics who attack faith should be careful not to confuse spiritual faith with blind faith. Faith is necessary in science, medicine, and religion. Consider the researcher or scientist who is trying to find a cure for cancer; they obviously have faith that a cure exists; otherwise they would not even try. People who cannot distinguish between blind (ritualistic) faith and that of spiritual faith are easily misinformed. They can make unfortunate statements such as: “If your beliefs are those of a Christian Scientist, obliging you to forgo all medical interventions, you may even have collaborated with God by refusing to give your child antibiotics.”[1] Christian Science does not “oblige” any particular human action as if people are androids.  A student of Christian Science does not collaborate with God as if God is a separate mind. In Science, there is no attitude of give-and-take; there is no human element that says, “If you do this, I’ll do that.” Do physicists collaborate with the law of gravity in order to go to the moon? No. Scientists study the principles of physics, they have the faith those rules will work, they apply the principles, and they go to the moon. Comments and condemnations based on a lack of research obscure any good points being made.

If Mind, Life, is foremost and superior, you can rely on Mind, which doesn’t need any cooperation from lower powers. The lower powers are real to the human mind, but divine Mind, Love, ultimately prevails.

As the sun rises in the east

So He shall split the eastern sky[2]

The John Templeton Foundation seeks to promote a deeper understanding of the influence spirituality, beliefs and values can have on human health. By promoting collaboration and clinical research into the relationship between spirituality and health, and by documenting the positive medical aspects of spiritual practice, the Foundation hopes to contribute to the reintegration of faith into modern life. This is an example of how the advancement of spiritual discoveries is not only being encouraged, but also is helping to offset the world’s tendency to attribute physical effects to physical causes rather than to a spiritual cause. Divine Science is meeting humanities desire for spirituality.

Matthew 26:1-2, 47-53

When Jesus had finished all these sayings, he said to his disciples, “You know that after two days the Passover is coming, and the Son of Man will be delivered up to be crucified.”

47 While he was still speaking, Judas came, one of the twelve, and with him a great crowd with swords and clubs, from the chief priests and the elders of the people. 48 Now the betrayer had given them a sign, saying, “The one I will kiss is the man; seize him.” 49 And he came up to Jesus at once and said, “Greetings, Rabbi!” And he kissed him. 50 Jesus said to him, “Friend, do what you came to do.” Then they came up and laid hands on Jesus and seized him. 51 And behold, one of those who were with Jesus stretched out his hand and drew his sword and struck the servant of the high priest and cut off his ear. 52 Then Jesus said to him, “Put your sword back into its place. For all who take the sword will perish by the sword. 53 Do you think that I cannot appeal to my Father, and he will at once send me more than twelve legions of angels?

From 21st Century Science and Health

“All who draw the sword will die by the sword.”[3] Let Truth uncover and destroy error in God’s own way, and let human justice imitate the divine. Sin will receive its full penalty, both for what it is and for what it does. Justice marks the sinner, and teaches human beings not to remove the ways and means of God.

To envy’s own hell, justice consigns the lie which, to advance itself, breaks God’s commandments.

The spiritual ability to comprehend thought and to heal by the Truth-power is won only as we are found reflecting the divine nature. Put in other words, self-glorification, arrogance, anger, and the like, are not found in Truth healing.

Humanity’s dependence on the relentless passions, selfishness, envy, hatred, and revenge—is beaten only by a mighty struggle. Every hour of delay makes the struggle more severe. If someone can’t stop the negative human elements from taking over their thought—happiness, health, and courage will be crushed. Here divine Science is the universal remedy, giving strength to the weakness of human mind. Spiritual and omnipotent Mind not only gives energy, but also lifts humanity above itself into purer desires, even into spiritual power and good-will to humankind.

The “man of sorrows”[4] best understood two main points: the insubstantiality of temporal life and intelligence, and the substantial actuality of all-inclusive God, good. These points of Mind-healing, or divine Science, armed him with Love.

Ephesians 6:10-18

Finally, be strong in the Lord and in the strength of his might. 11 Put on the whole armor of God, that you may be able to stand against the schemes of the devil. 12 For we do not wrestle against flesh and blood, but against the rulers, against the authorities, against the cosmic powers over this present darkness, against the spiritual forces of evil in the heavenly places. 13 Therefore take up the whole armor of God, that you may be able to withstand in the evil day, and having done all, to stand firm. 14 Stand therefore, having fastened on the belt of truth, and having put on the breastplate of righteousness, 15 and, as shoes for your feet, having put on the readiness given by the gospel of peace. 16 In all circumstances take up the shield of faith, with which you can extinguish all the flaming darts of the evil one; 17 and take the helmet of salvation, and the sword of the Spirit, which is the word of God, 18 praying at all times in the Spirit, with all prayer and supplication.

From 21st Century Science and Health

Truth should, and does, drive error out of all mortal selfhood. Truth is a two-edged sword, guarding and guiding. Truth places the Cherubim wisdom at the gate of understanding to acknowledge the proper guests. Radiant with mercy and justice, the sword of Truth shines far. It also cannot help but indicate the infinite distance between error and Truth, between the material and spiritual—the unreal and the real.

Do not judge the future advancement of divine Science by the steps already taken, unless you yourself will be condemned for failing to take the first step.

Let us prepare for the supremacy of Spirit, the kingdom of heaven—the government and law of universal harmony, which cannot be lost or remain forever unseen.

Romans 8:35

Who shall separate us from the love of Christ? Shall tribulation, or distress, or persecution, or famine, or nakedness, or danger, or sword?

From 21st Century Science and Health

Physical sciences analyze the testimony of the physical senses, constantly splitting it apart, breaking it down to nothing.  This creates an aversion between physical sciences and divine Science, but as the errors of sense are eliminated, divine Science shows the possibility of attaining spiritual understanding.

The mistake of trying to split Spirit causes human belief to have “many ‘gods’ and many ‘lords’.”[5]

We are the image or idea of God, an idea which can’t be lost or separated from its divine Principle. As the evidence before the mortal perceptions evaporate in the presence of spiritual perception, nothing can estrange us from the sweet sense and presence of Life and Truth.

It is an unawareness of spirituality which hides real beauty. Limited mindsets are unable to reveal immortal goodness. Understanding this, Paul said: “Neither death nor life, neither angels nor demons, neither the present nor the future, nor any powers, neither height nor depth, nor anything else in all cre ation, will be able to separate us from the love of God.”[6] This is the doctrine of Christian Science: that divine Love cannot be deprived of its manifestation or object; that happiness cannot be turned into sorrow, for sorrow is not the master of happiness; that good can never produce evil; that matter can never produce mind; and life cannot result in death. God’s unspoiled child—governed by its perfect Principle—is sinless and eternal.

Subject: Training

Golden text: I Timothy 4:7-8

Have nothing to do with irreverent, silly myths. Rather train yourself for godliness; for while bodily training is of some value, godliness is of value in every way, as it holds promise for the present life and also for the life to come.

Daniel 1:1-8

In the third year of the reign of Jehoiakim king of Judah, Nebuchadnezzar king of Babylon came to Jerusalem and besieged it. And the Lord gave Jehoiakim king of Judah into his hand, with some of the vessels of the house of God. And he brought them to the land of Shinar, to the house of his god, and placed the vessels in the treasury of his god. Then the king commanded Ashpenaz, his chief eunuch, to bring some of the people of Israel, both of the royal family and of the nobility, youths without blemish, of good appearance and skillful in all wisdom, endowed with knowledge, understanding learning, and competent to stand in the king’s palace, and to teach them the literature and language of the Chaldeans. The king assigned them a daily portion of the food that the king ate, and of the wine that he drank. They were to be educated for three years, and at the end of that time they were to stand before the king. Among these were Daniel, Hananiah, Mishael, and Azariah of the tribe of Judah. And the chief of the eunuchs gave them names: Daniel he called Belteshazzar, Hananiah he called Shadrach, Mishael he called Meshach, and Azariah he called Abednego. But Daniel resolved that he would not defile himself with the king’s food, or with the wine that he drank. Therefore he asked the chief of the eunuchs to allow him not to defile himself.

From 21st Century Science and Health

Effort spent living in the past, pursuing superficial goals, or showing off, is effort wasted.

Our dietetic theories first admit that food sustains our life, and then they discuss the certainty that food can kill us. This illogical reasoning is rebuked in Scripture by the metaphors about the fountain and stream,[1] the tree and its fruit,[2] and the kingdom divided against itself.[3] If God has, as prevalent theories support, created laws that food shall support human life, God cannot nullify these regulations by an opposite law that food can kill us.

Human beings may think that food upsets the healthy functions of mind and body. If this is the case, either the food or this thought must be abandoned, for the penalty is connected to the thinking. Which shall it be? Leaving the decision to divine Science, the control of Mind will be given the advantage over the faulty thinking and every temporal condition. The less we know or think about diet and digestion, the less likely we are inclined to be sick. Remember, although we have been trained to believe otherwise, it is not the body, nerves, or organs, but human mind, which reports food as undigested or problematic. The human mind’s report is a pseudo-mental testimony and can be destroyed only by the better results of Mind’s opposite evidence.

The so-called laws of health are simply laws that the human mind was trained to believe. If the premise for physical and mental health is limited to the human mind, the conclusions will be limited and erroneous. Truth makes no laws to regulate sickness, sin, and death, for these are unknown to Truth and should not be recognized as reality.

Because sin and sickness are not qualities of Soul, or Life, we have hope in spirituality. Nevertheless, it would be foolish to stop eating a healthy balanced diet, or to stop exercising, until we gain perfection and a clear comprehension of the living Spirit. In that perfect day of understanding, we shall neither eat to live nor live to eat.

Daniel 1:9-16

And God gave Daniel favor and compassion in the sight of the chief of the eunuchs, 10 and the chief of the eunuchs said to Daniel, “I fear my lord the king, who assigned your food and your drink; for why should he see that you were in worse condition than the youths who are of your own age? So you would endanger my head with the king.” 11 Then Daniel said to the steward whom the chief of the eunuchs had assigned over Daniel, Hananiah, Mishael, and Azariah, 12 “Test your servants for ten days; let us be given vegetables to eat and water to drink. 13 Then let our appearance and the appearance of the youths who eat the king’s food be observed by you, and deal with your servants according to what you see.” 14 So he listened to them in this matter, and tested them for ten days. 15 At the end of ten days it was seen that they were better in appearance and fatter in flesh than all the youths who ate the king’s food. 16 So the steward took away their food and the wine they were to drink, and gave them vegetables.

Strength and intelligence are not limited to muscles and brain. Measuring muscles or IQ’s (Intelligence Quotient), or testing people’s cognitive approach to problem solving and decision making, are inadequate appraisals. Strength and intelligence are not at the mercy of non-intelligent matter.

Mind controls the body, not partially but completely. This fact became evident to me after I fully examined my discovery and its demonstration in healing the sick. I submitted this metaphysical system of treating disease to a broad range of practical tests. This system gained ground and has proved itself to be a very effective curative agent, when scientifically employed.

God requires perfection, but not until the battle between Spirit and flesh is fought and the victory won. To stop eating, drinking, or being clothed materially before the spiritual facts of existence are gained step by step, is not legitimate. When we wait patiently on God and seek Truth righteously, Spirit directs our thought and action. Imperfect human beings grasp the ultimate of spiritual perfection slowly; but to begin aright and to continue the strife of demonstrating the great problem of being is doing much.

During the sensualist age, absolute divine Science may not be achieved prior to the change called death, for we have not the power to demonstrate what we do not understand. The human self must be evangelized. This task God demands us to accept gracefully today, and to abandon so fast as practical the temporal, and to work out the spiritual which determines the outward and actual.

The presence of natural nourishment should encourage self-disciplined, grateful thought. It should discourage any sense of worry or inflammation.

Learn the meaning of God, or good, and the nature of the immutable and immortal. Don’t worry when breaking away from mutating time and feelings, because you will not lose your sense of reality, or your own identity. As you contemplate spiritual life, consciousness is purified and being groomed to experience the celestial; similar to a chick which has broken from the shell and preens its wings for a skyward flight.

Daniel 1:17-21

17 As for these four youths, God gave them learning and skill in all literature and wisdom, and Daniel had understanding in all visions and dreams. 18 At the end of the time, when the king had commanded that they should be brought in, the chief of the eunuchs brought them in before Nebuchadnezzar. 19 And the king spoke with them, and among all of them none was found like Daniel, Hananiah, Mishael, and Azariah. Therefore they stood before the king. 20 And in every matter of wisdom and understanding about which the king inquired of them, he found them ten times better than all the magicians and enchanters that were in all his kingdom. 21 And Daniel was there until the first year of King Cyrus.

From 21st Century Science and Health

The knowledge of spiritual Science expands people’s perception of character, gives them alertness and the ability to be thorough and multitask usefully. The human mind, inspired with spiritual understanding, becomes more resilient and is capable of increased stamina. The human mind can escape somewhat from itself and won’t require so much sleep. Knowledge of the Science of being develops our dormant abilities and potential. Spiritual discernment opens the mind and we attain access to far-reaching and grand realms. As spiritual thinkers, we are elevated into our natural state of being insightful and quick to understand.

Matthew 13:52

And [Jesus] said to them, “Therefore every scribe who has been trained for the kingdom of heaven is like a master of a house, who brings out of his treasure what is new and what is old.”

From 21st Century Science and Health

As a physical, theoretical life-basis is found to be a misinterpretation of existence, the scientific and divine Principle of our spirituality dawns upon human thought. Consciousness is guided to “where the child was”[4]—even to the birth of a new-old idea, to the spiritual sense of being and of what Life includes. Thus the whole earth will be transformed by Truth as enlightened thought displaces the darkness of error.

What the physical senses tell us often reverses or rearranges the real Science of being. This rearrangement assigns seeming authority to sin, sickness, and death. But the great facts of Life, rightly understood, defeat this triad of errors, contradict their false witnesses, and reveal the power of heaven—the actual authority of harmony on earth. The material senses’ rearrangement of the Science of Soul was exposed in a practical way twenty centuries ago by the demonstrations of Jesus. Yet we are trained to believe that the human mind is secondary to mortal body, and that certain sections of matter, such as brain and nerves, are put in charge of pain and pleasure. Sadly, this derangement looks to matter to report to the mind the status of happiness or misery.

The truth of Mind shows conclusively how it is that matter seems to be, but is not. Divine Science, rising above physical theories, excludes matter, resolves things into thoughts, and replaces the objects of physical sense with spiritual ideas.

Luke 6:40-42

A disciple is not above his teacher, but everyone when he is fully trained will be like his teacher. 41 Why do you see the speck that is in your brother’s eye, but do not notice the log that is in your own eye? 42 How can you say to your brother, ‘Brother, let me take out the speck that is in your eye,’ when you yourself do not see the log that is in your own eye? You hypocrite, first take the log out of your own eye, and then you will see clearly to take out the speck that is in your brother’s eye.

From 21st Century Science and Health

The divine nature was skillfully personified by Christ Jesus, who shed light on a powerful concept of God. He shifted the people’s thought to experience something better than what they had been trained to think was normal. Jesus served to remove the stereotypical view of people as sinners, destined to be sick and dying. The Christ-like understanding of scientific being and divine healing includes a perfect Principle and idea―complete God and complete person―as the basis of thought and demonstration.

If our hopes and inclinations are spiritual, they come from enlightenment, not from trained thinking, and they produce the fruits of the Spirit.[5]

Golden text: Romans 12:2*

Do not be conformed to this world, but be transformed by the renewal of your mind, that by testing you may discern what is the will of God, what is good and acceptable and perfect.

Genesis 27:41-45

Now Esau hated Jacob because of the blessing with which his father had blessed him, and Esau said to himself, “The days of mourning for my father are approaching; then I will kill my brother Jacob.” 42 But the words of Esau her older son were told to Rebekah. So she sent and called Jacob her younger son and said to him, “Behold, your brother Esau comforts himself about you by planning to kill you. 43 Now therefore, my son, obey my voice. Arise, flee to Laban my brother in Haran 44 and stay with him a while, until your brother’s fury turns away— 45 until your brother’s anger turns away from you, and he forgets what you have done to him.

From 21st Century Science and Health**

Spiritual beings, or God’s children in divine Science, are one harmonious family; but the children of human beings are discordant and oftentimes fake.

“Both The Social Theory and The New Genetics have proved in their different ways to be blind alleys, quite unable to deliver on their promise. Their failure is ‘The Fall’ of modern medicine.”[1] James Le Fanu, M.D., medical columnist, London.

People should not linger in the storm if the body is freezing, nor should they remain in a contaminated environment. Until a person is able to prevent bad results, it is best to avoid adverse situations. To be discouraged is to resemble a student who is at an elementary level of mathematics and yet attempts to solve a problem of Euclid, only to deny the rule of the problem because the first effort brought failure.

There is no hypocrisy in Science. Principle is imperative. You can’t mock it by human will. Science is a divine demand, not human. Always right, its divine Principle never repents, but maintains the claims of Truth by quenching error. Divine mercy pardons a mistake when the error is destroyed.

Genesis 28:10-17

Jacob left Beersheba and went toward Haran. 11 And he came to a certain place and stayed there that night, because the sun had set. Taking one of the stones of the place, he put it under his head and lay down in that place to sleep. 12 And he dreamed, and behold, there was a ladder set up on the earth, and the top of it reached to heaven. And behold, the angels of God were ascending and descending on it! 13 And behold, the Lord stood above it and said, “I am the Lord, the God of Abraham your father and the God of Isaac. The land on which you lie I will give to you and to your offspring. 14 Your offspring shall be like the dust of the earth, and you shall spread abroad to the west and to the east and to the north and to the south, and in you and your offspring shall all the families of the earth be blessed. 15 Behold, I am with you and will keep you wherever you go, and will bring you back to this land. For I will not leave you until I have done what I have promised you.” 16 Then Jacob awoke from his sleep and said, “Surely the Lord is in this place, and I did not know it.” 17 And he was afraid and said, “How awesome is this place! This is none other than the house of God, and this is the gate of heaven.”

Jacob. A human being embracing duplicity, repentance, sensualism. Inspiration; the revelation of Science, in which rigid mortal mindsets yield to the spiritual attitude of Life and Love.

The Old Testament assigns different functions to the angels, or God’s divine messages. Michael’s characteristic is spiritual strength. He leads the troops of heaven against the power of sin (Satan), and fights the holy wars. Gabriel has the quieter task of imparting a sense of the ever-presence of ministering Love. These angels deliver us from the depths. When strong faith or spiritual strength wrestles and prevails through the understanding of God, Truth and Love are tangibly felt, even in times of anguish.

Genesis 31:2-3

And Jacob saw that Laban did not regard him with favor as before. Then the Lord said to Jacob, “Return to the land of your fathers and to your kindred, and I will be with you.”

Genesis 32:1

Jacob went on his way, and the angels of God met him.

Genesis 32:9-11

And Jacob said, “O God of my father Abraham and God of my father Isaac, O Lord who said to me, ‘Return to your country and to your kindred, that I may do you good,’ 10 I am not worthy of the least of all the deeds of steadfast love and all the faithfulness that you have shown to your servant, for with only my staff I crossed this Jordan, and now I have become two camps. 11 Please deliver me from the hand of my brother, from the hand of Esau, for I fear him, that he may come and attack me, the mothers with the children.

From 21st Century Science and Health

There is too much animal courage in society and not enough moral courage. Students of Truth and Love must take up arms against flawed mindsets at home and abroad. They must wrestle with sin in themselves and in others, and continue this warfare until they have finished the course. If they keep the faith, they will receive the honor of rejoicing.

Divine Science doesn’t get caught up in worldly evidence. If you haven’t advanced past sin yourself, don’t congratulate yourself for being blind to evil or for not living the good you claim to know. A two-faced attitude is far from Christianly scientific. “No one who conceals transgressions will prosper, but one who confesses and forsakes them will obtain mercy.”[2] Every student’s mind should be strongly impressed by divine Science; by an exalted awareness of the moral, social, and spiritual qualifications requisite for healing, well knowing it to be impossible for error, evil, and hate to accomplish the grand results of Truth and Love.

Genesis 32:22-32

The same night [Jacob] arose and took his two wives, his two female servants, and his eleven children, and crossed the ford of the Jabbok. 23 He took them and sent them across the stream, and everything else that he had. 24 And Jacob was left alone. And a man wrestled with him until the breaking of the day. 25 When the man saw that he did not prevail against Jacob, he touched his hip socket, and Jacob’s hip was put out of joint as he wrestled with him. 26 Then he said, “Let me go, for the day has broken.” But Jacob said, “I will not let you go unless you bless me.” 27 And he said to him, “What is your name?” And he said, “Jacob.” 28 Then he said, “Your name shall no longer be called Jacob, but Israel, for you have striven with God and with men, and have prevailed.” 29 Then Jacob asked him, “Please tell me your name.” But he said, “Why is it that you ask my name?” And there he blessed him. 30 So Jacob called the name of the place Peniel, saying, “For I have seen God face to face, and yet my life has been delivered.” 31 The sun rose upon him as he passed Penuel, limping because of his hip. 32 Therefore to this day the people of Israel do not eat the sinew of the thigh that is on the hip socket, because he touched the socket of Jacob’s hip on the sinew of the thigh.

From 21st Century Science and Health

Jacob was alone, wrestling with error—struggling with all his flesh was saying about pleasures and pains—when an angel, a message from Truth and Love appeared to Jacob and struck the sinew, or strength of the fleshly talk, until he perceived its unreality. Truth, being thereby understood, gave Jacob spiritual strength in this Peniel of divine Science. Then the angel said: “Let me go, for it is daybreak;”[3] that is, the light of Truth and Love dawns on you. But the patriarch, perceiving his faulty thinking and his need of improvement, did not loosen his hold on this glorious light until his nature was transformed. The angel asked Jacob what his name was. Jacob told him and the angel said, “Your name will no longer be Jacob, but Israel, because you have struggled with God and with men and have overcome.”[4] Jacob asked his deliverer, “Please tell me your name.”[5]  However, a specific name was withheld. The messenger was not a corporeal being, but a nameless, bodiless communication of divine Love—giving a spiritual sense of being which rebuked a materialist sense. Likewise, the Psalmist experienced this same touch of Love, and remarked that it restored his Soul.[6]

The result of Jacob’s wrestling became apparent. He had conquered the human mindset with the new understanding of Spirit and of spiritual power. This changed the man. He was no longer called Jacob, but Israel—a prince of God, or a soldier of God, who had fought a good fight. He was to become the father of those who through earnest effort followed his demonstration of the power of Spirit over the human senses. The people who followed his example were to be called the children of Israel, until the Messiah should rename them. If people stray and forget that Life is God, they are brought back through great tribulation. Suffering compels us to deny the temporal life perceptions and understand un-humanized, unlimited Mind. Don’t stray. We don’t want to neglect the divine power which heals the sick and sinning.

The trials encountered by prophet, disciple, and apostle, of “whom the world was not worthy,”[7] stalks every pioneer of truth.

When examined in the light of divine Science, we see beyond the surface of mortals and detect inverted thoughts and erroneous beliefs and learn not to be fooled by them. Or, in a circuitous manner, we borrow thought from a higher source than matter and reverse our thought process, to see celestial Truth replace error. Clothed in Spirit, appearance is “bright as a flash of lightning”[8]―like the garment of Christ. Even in this world, therefore, “always be clothed in white.”[9] “Anyone who meets a testing challenge head-on and manages to stick it out is mighty fortunate. For such persons loyally in love with God, the reward is life and more life.”[10]

Golden text: Colossians 3:12-13*

Put on therefore, as God’s elect, holy and beloved, a heart of compassion, kindness, lowliness, meekness, longsuffering; 13 forbearing one another, and forgiving each other, if any man have a complaint against any; even as the Lord forgave you, so also do ye:

II Kings 13:14-19

Now Elisha was fallen sick of his sickness whereof he died: and Joash the king of Israel came down unto him, and wept over him, and said, My father, my father, the chariots of Israel and the horsemen thereof! 15 And Elisha said unto him, Take bow and arrows; and he took unto him bow and arrows. 16 And he said to the king of Israel, Put thy hand upon the bow; and he put his hand upon it. And Elisha laid his hands upon the king’s hands. 17 And he said, Open the window eastward; and he opened it. Then Elisha said, Shoot; and he shot. And he said, Jehovah’s arrow of victory, even the arrow of victory over Syria; for thou shalt smite the Syrians in Aphek, till thou have consumed them. 18 And he said, Take the arrows; and he took them. And he said unto the king of Israel, Smite upon the ground; and he smote thrice, and stayed. 19 And the man of God was wroth with him, and said, Thou shouldest have smitten five or six times: then hadst thou smitten Syria till thou hadst consumed it; whereas now thou shalt smite Syria but thrice.

From 21st Century Science and Health**

A rule in Science is to fight against error and negate the human finite self with infinite Truth. This rule clearly interprets God as divine Principle—as Life, epitomized by the Father; as Truth, represented by the Child; as Love, represented by the Mother. Every human being at some point, here or hereafter, must battle with and overcome the mortal belief in a power opposed to God.

What happens when we don’t fight and destroy sin? What happens when we don’t destroy finite convictions or mortal status quos? Our mental and physical state will perceive suffering. The sin, which you think you love or is a part of you, comes back with accelerated force, for the devil knows its time is short. The Scriptural reference to time reaffirms the fact that evil is temporal, not eternal. The dragon is at last stung to death by its own malice. Paul refers to its sting as, “spiritual forces of evil in the heavenly realms.”[1]  How many periods of torture are required to remove all sin will depend on sin’s stubbornness.

II Kings 13: 20-25

And Elisha died, and they buried him. Now the bands of the Moabites invaded the land at the coming in of the year. 21 And it came to pass, as they were burying a man, that, behold, they spied a band; and they cast the man into the sepulchre of Elisha: and as soon as the man touched the bones of Elisha, he revived, and stood up on his feet.

22 And Hazael king of Syria oppressed Israel all the days of Jehoahaz. 23 But Jehovah was gracious unto them, and had compassion on them, and had respect unto them, because of his covenant with Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob, and would not destroy them, neither cast he them from his presence as yet. 24 And Hazael king of Syria died; and Ben-hadad his son reigned in his stead. 25 And Jehoash the son of Jehoahaz took again out of the hand of Ben-hadad the son of Hazael the cities which he had taken out of the hand of Jehoahaz his father by war. Three times did Joash smite him, and recovered the cities of Israel.

From 21st Century Science and Health

Those who are healed through metaphysical Science may not understand the Principle of the cure. They may even impute their recovery to change of air or diet, not rendering to God the honor due to Spirit alone. Entire immunity from the belief in sin, suffering, and death may not be reached at this level, but we may expect a decrease in these evils; and this scientific beginning is in the right direction.

To say that there is no sickness does not heal the sick. You have to know there is no sickness. Ignorance, subtlety, or false charity does not forever conceal error; evil will in time uncover and punish itself.

Anatomy says thoughts can move the muscles—sometimes. Such errors plague every material theory in which one statement contradicts another over and over again. It is related that Sir Humphry Davy[2] once apparently cured a case of paralysis simply by introducing a thermometer into the patient’s mouth. The thermometer was intended to ascertain the patient’s body temperature; but the sick man, supposed this ceremony was intended to heal him, and he recovered accordingly. Such a fact illustrates that all bodily activity comes from thought.

Lamentations 3:19-32

Remember mine affliction and my misery, the wormwood and the gall. 20 My soul hath them still in remembrance, and is bowed down within me. 21 This I recall to my mind; therefore have I hope. 22 It is of Jehovah’s lovingkindnesses that we are not consumed, because his compassions fail not. 23 They are new every morning; great is thy faithfulness. 24 Jehovah is my portion, saith my soul; therefore will I hope in him.
25 Jehovah is good unto them that wait for him, to the soul that seeketh him.
26 It is good that a man should hope and quietly wait for the salvation of Jehovah.
27 It is good for a man that he bear the yoke in his youth. 28  Let him sit alone and keep silence, because he hath laid it upon him. 29 Let him put his mouth in the dust, if so be there may be hope. 30 Let him give his cheek to him that smiteth him; let him be filled full with reproach. 31 For the Lord will not cast off for ever.
32 For though he cause grief, yet will he have compassion according to the multitude of his lovingkindnesses.

From 21st Century Science and Health

The careless doctor, the nurse, and the curt visitor may be sympathetic, but do they know the thorns they plant in the pillow of the sick and the heavenly homesick looking away from earth? Oh, why don’t they know? Being aware of this unawareness would do much more toward healing the sick and preparing their helpers for the midnight call, than all cries of “Lord, Lord!”

Common sense and common humanity are to be highly regarded; otherwise, what mental quality remains, with which to call forth healing from the extended arm of righteousness?

If the Scientist reaches the patient through divine Love, the healing work will be achieved at one visit. In the presence of Love, disease vanishes into its native nothingness like dew before the morning sunshine.

Spirituality must be pure in order to practice scientifically and deal with patients compassionately. Results correspond to the spiritual intent.

The physician who lacks empathy for humanity is deficient in goodwill. The public then has the apostolic warrant for repeating: “Those who say, ‘I love God,’ and hate their brothers or sisters, are liars; for those who do not love a brother or sister whom they have seen, cannot love God whom they have not seen.”[3] Not having spiritual goodwill, the physician lacks faith in the divine Mind, and can’t recognize infinite Love which alone confers the healing power. Such a so-called Scientist will “strain out a gnat”[4]  while they swallow the camels of bigoted pompous learning.

The physician must also pay attention so as not to be overwhelmed by either the hatefulness of sin or by the unveiling of wrong thinking (sin) in her or his own attitude. The sick are terrified by their sick beliefs and sinners should be frightened by their own sinful thinking; however, the Scientist of universal Truth and Love will be calm in the presence of both sin and disease, knowing that Life is God, and God is All.

It takes effort not to bury the spirit of divine Science in the burial clothes of its letter. If we would open the prison doors for the sick, we must first learn to bind up the broken-hearted. If we would heal by the Spirit, we must not hide the talent of spiritual healing behind the glitz of worldly status, ritualistic activities or even somber piety. In the presence of a sick person, employ tender words and spiritual encouragement.

Science speaks the words of Truth to those who are lost, and they answer with rejoicing.

Mark 1:40-45

And there cometh to [Jesus] a leper, beseeching him, and kneeling down to him, and saying unto him, If thou wilt, thou canst make me clean. 41 And being moved with compassion, he stretched forth his hand, and touched him, and saith unto him, I will; be thou made clean. 42 And straightway the leprosy departed from him, and he was made clean. 43 And he strictly charged him, and straightway sent him out, 44 and saith unto him, See thou say nothing to any man: but go show thyself to the priest, and offer for thy cleansing the things which Moses commanded, for a testimony unto them. 45 But he went out, and began to publish it much, and to spread abroad the matter, insomuch that Jesus could no more openly enter into a city, but was without in desert places: and they came to him from every quarter.

From 21st Century Science and Health

The theology of divine Science includes healing the sick. The ancient Christians were healers. Jesus taught, lived, and proved a scientific healing faith. Why has this living faith been lost? Compassionate, unobtrusive, intelligent healing is lost because our systems of religion are governed more or less by our systems of material medicine. The first idolatry was faith in matter. Society, advertisements, pharmaceutical companies, and the schools have made faith in drugs the fashion, rather than faith in God. By trusting matter to destroy its own disorder, health and harmony have been sacrificed. Temporal systems are barren of the vitality of spiritual power by which physical sense is made the servant of Science, and religion becomes Christ-like.

Love honors the demonstrations of Jesus with unsurpassed power and compassion. But the same, “attitude…as that of Christ Jesus”[5] must always accompany the letter of Science in order to confirm and repeat the ancient demonstrations of prophets and apostles.

This Science teaches us that God is the only Life, and that this Life is truth and love; that God is to be understood, compassionately respected, and demonstrated; that divine Truth drives out errors and heals the sick.

Yet do not turn aside from following the Lord, but serve the Lord with all your heart. 21 And do not turn aside after empty things that cannot profit or deliver, for they are empty. 22 For the Lord will not forsake his people, for his great name’s sake, because it has pleased the Lord to make you a people for himself. 23 Moreover, as for me, far be it from me that I should sin against the Lord by ceasing to pray for you, and I will instruct you in the good and the right way. 24 Only fear the Lord and serve him faithfully with all your heart. Are our thoughts of Deity empty?

Default thinking assumes that all revelation must come from a scholarly or ecclesiastical lineage, like kings crowned from a royal dynasty. Those assumptions disallow inspired understanding and the demonstration of God’s healing power. For this Principle there is no ecclesiastical monopoly, no human lineage of teachers, no successor. The priest is the spiritualized person. Immortal rulings are crowned. In healing the sick and sinning, Jesus actively brought attention to the fact that the healing effect followed the understanding of the divine Principle and of the Christ-spirit which controlled his physical self. As divine Principle is scientifically understood, you can comprehend and experience for yourself the works of Christ, Truth. The Bible declares that all believers “will be called priests of the Lord.”[2]

It requires a mental unlearning, restructuring and reorganization before we can adopt scientific religion and the divine healing which overcomes sickness, sin and death. Let our pulpits do justice to divine Science. Let Science have fair representation by the media.

I Samuel 15:1, 24-26

And Samuel said to Saul, “The Lord sent me to anoint you king over his people Israel; now therefore listen to the words of the Lord.

24 Saul said to Samuel, “I have sinned, for I have transgressed the commandment of the Lord and your words, because I feared the people and obeyed their voice. 25 Now therefore, please pardon my sin and return with me that I may bow before the Lord.” 26 And Samuel said to Saul, “I will not return with you. For you have rejected the word of the Lord, and the Lord has rejected you from being king over Israel.”

21st Century Science and Health

It is not safe to build on false foundations.

Obsessions, selfishness, misleading appetites, hatred, fear, and lust give way to spirituality, and the superabundance of being is on the side of God, good.

Science shows that conflicting convictions and opinions repeatedly transmit mixed signals. The signals symbolize confusion, but we can be safe from confusion when it is promptly and persistently tuned out. As we tune into divine Science, Truth and Love buffer confused mentalities and thereby invigorate and sustain existence. Knowledge picked up by the five senses is disposable.

Whoever uses their developed mental energies or powers to commit opportune atrocities is never safe. God will arrest those people. Divine justice will confine them. Their sins will be millstones about their necks, weighing them down to the depths of disgrace and death. The aggravation of error foretells its doom and confirms the ancient axiom: Whom the gods would destroy, they first make mad.

I Samuel 16:1, 10-12

The Lord said to Samuel, “How long will you grieve over Saul, since I have rejected him from being king over Israel? Fill your horn with oil, and go. I will send you to Jesse the Bethlehemite, for I have provided for myself a king among his sons.”

10 And Jesse made seven of his sons pass before Samuel. And Samuel said to Jesse, “The Lord has not chosen these.” 11 Then Samuel said to Jesse, “Are all your sons here?” And he said, “There remains yet the youngest, but behold, he is keeping the sheep.” And Samuel said to Jesse, “Send and get him, for we will not sit down till he comes here.” 12 And he sent and brought him in. Now he was ruddy and had beautiful eyes and was handsome. And the Lord said, “Arise, anoint [David], for this is he.”

The pains of sinful sense are less harmful than its pleasures. When human beings realize they no longer want to believe in physical suffering, they turn from the body to Spirit and call on divine sources outside of themselves.

When navigating aircraft through a storm, the pressure is shifting, the wind is shrieking, and air pockets are hiding in the air currents. We ask the pilot: “Do you know your course? Can you aviate safely among this turbulence?” Though brave, the dauntless aviator is not sure of safety because even aeronautical science is not equal to the Science of Mind. Yet, acting on his or her highest understanding, the pilot doesn’t avoid responsibility, but keeps working, ready to act on divine guidance. This example of behavior can be useful in any stressful relationship, including a seething marriage. Be accountable, hope and work, willingly act on divine guidance, not private interest. Divine guidance will either force a graceful change, or calm the enraged atmosphere.

I Samuel 19:1

And Saul spoke to Jonathan his son and to all his servants, that they should kill David.

I Samuel 20:1, 12-13, 18

Then David fled from Naioth in Ramah and came and said before Jonathan, “What have I done? What is my guilt? And what is my sin before your father, that he seeks my life?”

12 And Jonathan said to David, “The Lord, the God of Israel, be witness! When I have sounded out my father, about this time tomorrow, or the third day, behold, if he is well disposed toward David, shall I not then send and disclose it to you? 13 But should it please my father to do you harm, the Lord do so to Jonathan and more also if I do not disclose it to you and send you away, that you may go in safety. May the Lord be with you, as he has been with my father.

18 Now David fled and escaped, and he came to Samuel at Ramah and told him all that Saul had done to him.

The harmful effect of lousy friendships is less seen than felt.

Fear weighs down humanity with superimposed and conjectural evils. Human mind is the worst enemy of the body, while divine Mind is its best friend.

Would life without friends be empty? Then the time will come when you will feel alone, without sympathy, but this vacuum is filled with divine Love. When this time comes, even if you cling to a sense of personal joys, spiritual Love will force you to accept what best promotes your spiritual growth. Friends will betray and enemies will slander, until the lesson is learned, and you are exalted; for “man’s extremity is God’s opportunity.”[3] I speak from experience. We are learning to lay down our fleshliness and gain spirituality by ridding our self of a mortal identity. Universal Love is the divine way.

Psalms 119: 113-117

I hate the double-minded, but I love your law.
114 You are my hiding place and my shield; I hope in your word.
115 Depart from me, you evildoers, that I may keep the commandments of my God.
116 Uphold me according to your promise, that I may live, and let me not be put to shame in my hope!
117 Hold me up, that I may be safe and have regard for your statutes continually!

Sickness is no less a temptation than is sin and they are both healed by understanding God’s power over them.

The history of Christianity furnishes sublime proofs of the supporting influence and protecting power bestowed on us by our heavenly Father-Mother. Omnipotent Mind gives us faith and understanding whereby to safeguard our self, not only from temptation, but also from bodily suffering.

The diverse manifestations of divine Science indicate Mind, never matter, and have one Principle.

The theology of a dualistic God gives no hint of the unchanging love of God.

Do not cede obedience to materialism. Affirm that the spiritual lawgivers, Truth, Life, and Love, are the only legitimate and eternal demands on us. Spirit enforces obedience through divine statutes.

Psalm 4:8

In peace I will both lie down and sleep; for you alone, O Lord, make me dwell in safety.

Under the umbrella of our Maker, we can have no other Mind. Secure on the Evangelist’s statement that “all things were made; without him nothing was made that has been made,”[1] we can triumph over sin, sickness, and death.
