PBS posted online a history of America’s Independence Day

Declaring independence in America didn’t come easy. The declaration was the result of mixed thoughts that soon united to design a plan of improvement.

But, they were up against the American thinkers who were loyal to the British king. The people devoted to the king were okay with taxation without representation. They were okay with a king who didn’t listen to his constituents. They were okay with working hard for no rewards.

Despite the satisfied colonists, the dissatisfied colony members convened together as the Continental Congress. It took a few gatherings but on June 11, 1776, they started hashing out what formally became the Declaration of Independence on July 4, 1776.

The declaration circulated publicly and was read. It was understood, not so much as an affront to the king, but as an admittance of progress.

In the Introduction to the 6th edition of 21st Century Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures, we read, “Progress is a law of divine Spirit. Its force embraces us, keeps us grounded and yet allows us to soar.”

A few details should be remembered: After independence was declared, a war for that freedom had to be fought; and moreover, independence for African-Americans in slavery wasn’t granted.

More steps were needed to experience a greater independence. More steps are necessary today because progress is infinite, just as freedom is.

Congress established Independence Day as a holiday in 1870, and in 1938 Congress reaffirmed it as a paid holiday for federal employees.

July 4 can be celebrated with fireworks, an apple pie, parades, waving the flag.

I remember a time when my church group went to a retirement home to sing patriotic songs for the 4th.

A cafeteria room full of senior citizens. Quite a few appeared docile and unresponsive. Yet, as we sang, and as the piano hummed out tunes, eyes got brighter, voices got stronger and started joining in with the chorus. During the third song, men began standing and saluting, or holding their hand over their heart.

It brought tears to my eyes. These men and women had survived World War II and other wars. They encourage me to further understand independence with deeper and broader views.

Posted online at National Review, is an article written by Thomas Sowell, What are we Please read in your Bible, Romans 6.Celebrating? It reads in part: “Independence Day signified much more than one country announcing its independence from another on July 4, 1776. It represented a new form of government — freer and more accountable to its own people than the monarchies common around the world for centuries. What happened in America did not stay in America. The example of freedom inspired other peoples in other lands.”

In divine Science, we fight for freedom from restricted or oppressed thinking. Our independence inspires others and ourselves, because it’s ongoing. There is no end to progress and freedom. We can declare and fight for independence from sinful, sick thoughts and experiences. I believe we gain independence when we are dependent on Truth, God.

From 21st Century Science and Health

Truth encourages the elements of freedom.

The voice of God in behalf of all people is reverberating around the world as the spokesperson of the new revolution sounds the keynote of universal mental freedom. A fuller acknowledgement of our rights as useful spiritual individuals, demands the terrors of sin and sickness be exterminated from the human mind. Spiritual freedom is gained, not through human warfare, but through spiritual Science.

God has built a higher platform of human rights, on divine claims. These claims are not made through human regulations or creeds, but in demonstration of “Peace upon earth among men of goodwill!”[1] Human policies, scholastic theology, and inconsistent health care systems divide and scatter faith and spiritual understanding. Divine Science comes to the rescue and our birthright of sole allegiance to our Maker asserts itself.

We can be saved from the bureaucratic and rote systems of today’s Pharaohs. The disabled, the deaf, the dumb, the depressed, the visually impaired, the sick, the sensualist, the sinner, can be saved from the terrors of their own beliefs. Don’t waste your years away by serving an unreal master telling you that the body governs you rather than Mind. You can break the bondage, however you must then press on with faith in God through an awful conflict, the Red Sea and the wilderness, as you trust Truth, the strong deliverer, to guide your thought into the land of divine Science. In the divine land, or state of consciousness, limitations are overcome and your rights are known and acknowledged.

Oppressive civil laws are disputed and human beings are taught their right to freedom. From this same standpoint, mental laws can be disputed. The self-sabotaging mortal laws must be denied and succeeded. The law of the divine Mind must end human repression, or human beings will continue to be unaware of their inalienable rights. People are prone to hopeless obsessions and anguish because public teachers permit an unawareness of divine power.

Discerning the rights of people, we can’t fail to foresee the doom of oppression. Trepidation and misery are not legitimate states of people. God made us free. Paul said, “I was born a citizen.”[2] Humanity should be free to help themselves and society. “Where the Spirit of the Lord is, there is freedom.”[3] Love and Truth make free, whereas evil and error lead into captivity.

Divine Science raises the standard of freedom and says: “Follow me! Escape from the control of sick, sinful, and dying knowledge!” Jesus designated the way. Citizens of the world, accept the “glorious freedom of the children of God,”[4] and be free! This is your divine right. The self-deluded idolatrous views, not divine law, has captivated you, made you arthritic, made you a procrastinator, weakened your body, and ruined your reputation.

God did not institute physical laws to control us. We do not have to get sick because we broke a human-made health law. Jesus healed in direct opposition to, and in defiance of, physical laws and conditions.

To be dependent on that which is constantly changing is not reasonable. False dependencies will cease as we recognize our God-given dominion over the temporal senses and acknowledge our heritage of freedom. Human beings will someday assert their freedom in the name of Almighty God. Dropping our present beliefs, we will recognize harmony as the spiritual reality, and disorder as the temporal unreality. We will control our own bodies through the understanding of divine Science.

Like our nation, Christian Science has its Declaration of Independence. God has endowed us with inalienable rights among which are self-government, reason, and conscience. We are properly self-governed only when we are guided rightly and governed by our Maker, divine Truth and Love. Our rights are invaded when the divine order is interfered with and the mental malpractitioner incurs the divine penalty for this crime.

When judging Christian Science, sanction only such methods as are demonstrable in Truth and known by their fruits. Classify other methods that suggest futile or backward behavior as did Paul in his epistle to the Galatians, when he wrote: “The acts of the sinful nature are obvious: sexual immorality, impurity and debauchery; idolatry and witchcraft; hatred, discord, jealousy, fits of rage, selfish ambition, dissensions, factions and envy; drunkenness, orgies, and the like. I warn you, as I did before, that those who live like this will not inherit the kingdom of God. But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness and self-control. Against such things there is no law.”[5]

Spiritual harmony constitutes individual and collective happiness, strength, and permanence.

Guard against narrowness and jealousy because they restrict productive behavior. Home is not a boundary of the affections, but is a framework from which to grow spiritually.

Moral freedom is found in Soul.

Golden Text: Matthew 1: 23*

 “Behold, the virgin shall conceive and bear a son, and they shall call his name Immanuel”

Luke 1:26-33, 46-53

26 In the sixth month the angel Gabriel was sent from God to a city of Galilee named Nazareth, 27 to a virgin betrothed to a man whose name was Joseph, of the house of David. And the virgin’s name was Mary. 28 And he came to her and said, “Greetings, O favored one, the Lord is with you!” 29 But she was greatly troubled at the saying, and tried to discern what sort of greeting this might be. 30 And the angel said to her, “Do not be afraid, Mary, for you have found favor with God. 31 And behold, you will conceive in your womb and bear a son, and you shall call his name Jesus. 32 He will be great and will be called the Son of the Most High. And the Lord God will give to him the throne of his father David, 33 and he will reign over the house of Jacob forever, and of his kingdom there will be no end.”

46 And Mary said,

“My soul magnifies the Lord,
47     and my spirit rejoices in God my Savior,
48 for he has looked on the humble estate of his servant.
For behold, from now on all generations will call me blessed;
49 for he who is mighty has done great things for me,
and holy is his name.
50 And his mercy is for those who fear him
from generation to generation.
51 He has shown strength with his arm;
he has scattered the proud in the thoughts of their hearts;
52 he has brought down the mighty from their thrones
and exalted those of humble estate;
53 he has filled the hungry with good things,
and the rich he has sent away empty.

The human thought must free itself from self-imposed materiality and bondage. Don’t take the effort to ask the genome, heart, or lungs: What are our prospects for life? Ask Mind about life. Mind is not helpless. Intelligence is not mute before non-intelligence.

Error of thought is reflected in error of action. The obsessive study of material existence—of a beginning and end, with birth, decay, and dissolution as its component stages—hides the true and spiritual Life, and causes our standard to drag behind. If Life has any starting point whatsoever, then the great I AM is a myth. If Life is God, as the Scriptures imply, then Life, Mind, isn’t embryonic, isn’t a primordial explosion of dense matter. A particle or physical force is an impossible enclosure for infinite Spirit.

The underpinnings in the temple of Christian Science are to be found in the following postulates: that Life is God, good, and not evil; that Soul is sinless, not to be found in the body; that Spirit is not, and cannot be, humanized; that Life is not at risk to death; that the spiritual real person of God has no birth, no temporal life, and no death.

Matthew 2: 1-12

Now after Jesus was born in Bethlehem of Judea in the days of Herod the king, behold, wise men from the east came to Jerusalem, saying, “Where is he who has been born king of the Jews? For we saw his star when it rose and have come to worship him.” When Herod the king heard this, he was troubled, and all Jerusalem with him; and assembling all the chief priests and scribes of the people, he inquired of them where the Christ was to be born. They told him, “In Bethlehem of Judea, for so it is written by the prophet:

“‘And you, O Bethlehem, in the land of Judah,
are by no means least among the rulers of Judah;
for from you shall come a ruler
who will shepherd my people Israel.’”

Then Herod summoned the wise men secretly and ascertained from them what time the star had appeared. And he sent them to Bethlehem, saying, “Go and search diligently for the child, and when you have found him, bring me word, that I too may come and worship him.” After listening to the king, they went on their way. And behold, the star that they had seen when it rose went before them until it came to rest over the place where the child was. 10 When they saw the star, they rejoiced exceedingly with great joy. 11 And going into the house they saw the child with Mary his mother, and they fell down and worshiped him. Then, opening their treasures, they offered him gifts, gold and frankincense and myrrh. 12 And being warned in a dream not to return to Herod, they departed to their own country by another way.

Born of woman, Jesus appeared in the flesh. Although equipped with the divine Spirit, Jesus still felt a part of Mary’s earthly condition, which accounts for his struggles in Gethsemane and on Calvary. If his origin hadn’t been a typical human birth, Jesus wouldn’t have been significant to human minds as “the way.”[3] But as it was, the circumstance enabled him to be the mediator, or way-shower, between God and human beings.

Angels announced to the wise men this dual appearing, and angels whisper it through faith, to the hungering heart in every age.

As a physical, theoretical life-basis is found to be a misinterpretation of existence, the scientific and divine Principle of our spirituality dawns upon human thought. Consciousness is guided to “where the child was”[4]—even to the birth of a new-old idea, to the spiritual sense of being and of what Life includes. Thus the whole earth will be transformed by Truth as enlightened thought displaces the darkness of error.

Matthew 2: 13-23

13 Now when they had departed, behold, an angel of the Lord appeared to Joseph in a dream and said, “Rise, take the child and his mother, and flee to Egypt, and remain there until I tell you, for Herod is about to search for the child, to destroy him.” 14 And he rose and took the child and his mother by night and departed to Egypt 15 and remained there until the death of Herod. This was to fulfill what the Lord had spoken by the prophet, “Out of Egypt I called my son.”

From 21st Century Science and Health

The divine Principle of healing is proved in the personal experience of any sincere seeker of Truth. Its purpose is good, and its practice is safer and more potent than that of any other sanitary method. The unbiased Christian thought is soonest touched by Truth, and convinced of it. Only those quarrel with her method who do not understand her meaning, or discerning the truth, come not to the light lest their works be reproved. No intellectual proficiency is requisite in the learner, but sound morals are most desirable.

Earth has little light or joy before Life is spiritually learned. Every agony of mortal error helps error to destroy itself and we can perceive immortal Truth. This is the new birth going on hourly, by which human beings may entertain angels, the true ideas of God, the spiritual sense of being.

 Revelation 12: 1-3, 7-8, 13-16

And a great sign appeared in heaven: a woman clothed with the sun, with the moon under her feet, and on her head a crown of twelve stars. She was pregnant and was crying out in birth pains and the agony of giving birth. And another sign appeared in heaven: behold, a great red dragon, with seven heads and ten horns, and on his heads seven diadems.

Now war arose in heaven, Michael and his angels fighting against the dragon. And the dragon and his angels fought back, but he was defeated, and there was no longer any place for them in heaven.

13 And when the dragon saw that he had been thrown down to the earth, he pursued the woman who had given birth to the male child. 14 But the woman was given the two wings of the great eagle so that she might fly from the serpent into the wilderness, to the place where she is to be nourished for a time, and times, and half a time. 15 The serpent poured water like a river out of his mouth after the woman, to sweep her away with a flood. 16 But the earth came to the help of the woman, and the earth opened its mouth and swallowed the river that the dragon had poured from his mouth.

From 21st Century Science and Health

The process of advancing the spiritual idea is typified by a woman in hard labor, waiting to be delivered of her sweet promise. The idea is great and the birth is ominous, however, the stress doesn’t linger because the birth goes on and includes joy.

The enormous red dragon symbolizes a lie—the belief that substance, life, and intelligence can be restricted, separated, or fleshly.

The dragon can’t war for long against Love because it is killed by divine Principle. Truth and Love prevail and the conflict between flesh and Spirit is ended.

Don’t be immobilized by the different disguises of fear and hatred. The Revelator uncovers and explains the embodiment and awful character of all evil, but he also sees its nothingness, or in other words, he sees the allness of God, good.

Millions of unprejudiced minds are waiting and looking for rest and drink. They are simple seekers for Truth, weary wanderers thirsty in the desert. Give them a cup of cold water[1] with Christ’s attitude and never fear the consequences. Watch out, because the old dragon may cause a torrential uproar to drown the Christ-idea. However, the dragon can’t destroy “an instrument through which only truth can speak.”[2] The truth of being will be understood. The earth will help. People who are ready for the blessing will give you thanks. The river will be calmed, and Christ will command the wave.

Sneaking fireworks behind the barn

I hope you all had a brilliant July 4th.

Doug and I had no plans for the evening until our neighbor, Francy, 4-wheeled over here to invite us to their place for fireworks that evening. We mentioned to Francy that back in Kennewick, Washington, it was illegal to shoot fireworks. Grass fires would get started and rush through the desert. Francy said, Oh, fireworks are illegal here too but we are careful and do it behind the barn.

Interesting.

So, as soon as twilight swooned overhead, we make a huge bowl of popcorn and walked behind Francy’s barn for fireworks.

A blazing bonfire was the hub of the audience. We were not the only neighbors present. Neighbors from miles around were there. It was glorious fun and the popcorn was munched down. Francy’s husband, Eddie, and Bob, had fireworks going for over an hour! They were safe, and they did do it right next to a pond full of water.
