Golden text: I Peter 2:11-12*

Friends, this world is not your home, so don’t make yourselves cozy in it. Don’t indulge your ego at the expense of your soul. Live an exemplary life among the natives so that your actions will refute their prejudices. Then they’ll be won over to God’s side and be there to join in the celebration when he arrives.

Isaiah 2:6-11

God, you’ve walked out on your family Jacob
because their world is full of hokey religion,
Philistine witchcraft, and pagan hocus-pocus,
a world rolling in wealth,
Stuffed with things,
no end to its machines and gadgets,
And gods—gods of all sorts and sizes.
These people make their own gods and worship what they make.
A degenerate race, facedown in the gutter.
Don’t bother with them! They’re not worth forgiving!

10 Head for the hills,
hide in the caves
From the terror of God,
from his dazzling presence.

11-17 People with a big head are headed for a fall,
pretentious egos brought down a peg.
It’s God alone at front-and-center

From 21st Century Science and Health**

Human mind is unaware of its false ego or it could never be self-deceived. If this mortal mind knew how to be better, it would. When human mind tries to believe in something besides itself, it only promotes its own image as deity, thereby becoming an idolater. Out of the necessity to maintain its identity the human mind has other gods and believes in more than one Mind.

The understanding that the Ego, I AM, is Mind, and that there is but one Mind or intelligence, begins at once to destroy the errors of human sense and to supply the truth of spiritual sense. This understanding makes the body harmonious; it makes the nerves, bones, brain, etc., servants, instead of masters. If humanity is governed by the law of divine Mind, the body is obedient to everlasting Life and Truth and Love.

Galatians 2:19-21

What actually took place is this: I, [Paul] tried keeping rules and working my head off to please God, and it didn’t work. So I quit being a “law man” so that I could be God’s man. Christ’s life showed me how, and enabled me to do it. I identified myself completely with him. Indeed, I have been crucified with Christ. My ego is no longer central. It is no longer important that I appear righteous before you or have your good opinion, and I am no longer driven to impress God. Christ lives in me. The life you see me living is not “mine,” but it is lived by faith in the Son of God, who loved me and gave himself for me. I am not going to go back on that. Is it not clear to you that to go back to that old rule-keeping, peer-pleasing religion would be an abandonment of everything personal and free in my relationship with God? I refuse to do that, to repudiate God’s grace. If a living relationship with God could come by rule-keeping, then Christ died unnecessarily.

From 21st Century Science and Health

As the true knowledge of God becomes evident, the outdated concept of God as a mighty hero, lord, or king, will continue to vanish. Creeds and rituals still need to wash their hands of religious lore. Years ago, spiritual advancement was opposed by sword and spear. Today, idolatry anger, envy, arrogance, and egotism, whisper “Crucify! Crucify!”[1]

Beliefs that engender a national theology or political religion are the antithesis of true Christianity. Narrow systems and theories concerning God, human beings, health, and a religious society, are restrictive. Jesus, who set Christianity on the foundation of Spirit, was accused of “making himself equal with God.”[2]  Jesus taught as he was inspired by the Maker and would recognize no life, intelligence, or substance outside of God.

Jesus didn’t assume a mortal selfhood. It was his spirituality that made it possible for Jesus to heal the sick, drive out evil, and raise the dead.

Jesus showed us a whip[3] is needed to drive tyranny and arrogance out of church. The strong cords of scientific demonstration, as twisted and wielded by Jesus, are still needed to purge churches of their vain traffic in worldly worship. Church should be made “a house of prayer for all nations,”[4] where humility and divine Science are welcome.

If religious people accept church salaries and build churches, yet turn away the poor and stranger, they are shutting the door on progress. Let the story of Jesus’ birth in a manger, and death on a cross, deflate that arrogance and human egotism. Gratification of the physical senses will numb the right hand and cause the left to let go of its grasp on the divine.

Proverbs 16: 1-9

Mortals make elaborate plans,
but God has the last word.

Humans are satisfied with whatever looks good;
God probes for what is good.

Put God in charge of your work,
then what you’ve planned will take place.

God made everything with a place and purpose;
even the wicked are included—but for judgment.

God can’t stomach arrogance or pretense;
believe me, he’ll put those upstarts in their place.

Guilt is banished through love and truth;
Fear-of-God deflects evil.

When God approves of your life,
even your enemies will end up shaking your hand.

Far better to be right and poor
than to be wrong and rich.

We plan the way we want to live,
but only God makes us able to live it.

From 21st Century Science and Health

Human beings are egotists. They stroll around believing themselves to be independent workers, elite authors, or privileged originators of something God could in no way ever manifest. The creations of human mind represent the foibles of existence, whereas spiritual people represent the truth of creation.

The fleshly body, which you call me, is human mind, and this mind is limited in sensation. The body has originated and been developed by limited perceptions and is therefore material, limited. The materialism of parent and child is only in human mind, as the dead body proves; for when the human being has resigned the body to dust, the body is no longer the parent, even in appearance.

When human beings blend their thoughts of existence with the spiritual and work only as Truth and Love works, they will taste heaven and stop groping in the dark and clinging to the world.

People are the reflection of Soul, the direct opposite of tactile matter, and Soul is the one Ego.

Spiritual Ego never mistakes and is always conscious. Spirit never believes or decides, but knows; Soul is never born and never dies. Spiritual person is the likeness of this Ego. We are not God, but we are the outcome of God. We reflect God.

Our spirituality is designed by perfect Mind and reflects those higher conceptions of loveliness which transcend all false conceptions.

I Peter 3: 8-12

Summing up: Be agreeable, be sympathetic, be loving, be compassionate, be humble. That goes for all of you, no exceptions. No retaliation. No sharp-tongued sarcasm. Instead, bless—that’s your job, to bless. You’ll be a blessing and also get a blessing. Whoever wants to embrace life and see the day fill up with good, Here’s what you do: Say nothing evil or hurtful; Snub evil and cultivate good; run after peace for all you’re worth. God looks on all this with approval, listening and responding well to what he’s asked; But he turns his back on those who do evil things.

Desire is multifaceted. Many layered. We can have good desires or bad desires.

Because many of us don’t know what good or bad desires are, economists, scientists, religionists, and psychologists have analyzed and theorized desire.

From the Stanford Encyclopedia of Philosophy website at https://plato.stanford.edu/entries/desire/ we read, “To desire is to be in a particular state of mind. It is a state of mind familiar to everyone who has ever wanted to drink water or desired to know what has happened to an old friend, but its familiarity does not make it easy to give a theory of desire…

“Understanding desires requires at least two things: first, to have a theory of desire itself, and second, to have some familiarity with the varieties of desires that there are. Once acquired, an understanding of desire can illuminate a number of controversies surrounding desire.”

Six theories of desire were given: action-based, pleasure-based, good-based, attention-based, learning-based, and holistic.

Thing is: this informative study was kind of laborious because desire was scrutinized.

A Bible verse came to my mind.

Please read from you Bible, Ecclesiastes 1:8

Basically, human knowledge can be overwhelming, undesirable. We can however understand a desire that comes from something greater than human knowledge or biology.

This desire that comes from something greater, let’s call it divine Mind, is free and gives us the freedom to break away from confusion or negative desires.

Even the desire to hurt oneself can be troubling. A thread was found at Anxiety Community website that shows caring responses regarding hurting oneself.

https://www.anxietycommunity.com/index.php?threads/the-desire-to-hurt-yourself.826/

“Azelma posted: I know it’s wrong and no one should ever do it for any reason, but I just get this feeling that I must punish myself. It somehow makes me feel better, transforming the mental pain into a physical form that’s easier to concentrate on. Or something, I don’t know. I was just wondering if there are any others like me and how you guys deal with it.

“Alex posted: Self-harming is a very delicate topic and very hard to explain to people who have never experienced it. It can happen not just to ‘punish’ yourself, but also to take away that inner pain that is invisible and you don’t know how else to deal with. Often it’s subconscious too and I recall talking to my brother once and I was ‘hurting’ myself and he told me to stop, but I didn’t even know I was doing it at the time as it had become a habit. When it occurs out of habit, you don’t always notice the action or pain.

“Happy Kid posted: One therapist helped me make a safety plan, and that helps with the difficult times. It’s good to have something like that in place, including people you can call or text.”

The advice given to Azelma was helpful, however sometimes we humans need greater examples of freedom. This is where God can help. Or the examples of prophets or Christ Jesus.

Please read in you Bible I John 2.

Now, desire is also associated with economics and business.

T.J. Cook, Executive Director at ABQid in New Mexico, spoke on TEDx, about how to go from desire to discipline, with innovation, https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=a_pHGbL5138

Cook mentioned the importance of creating space for innovation, rather than trying to dictate it. He spoke of creating a culture of innovation in the workplace, and gave three steps that can be taken:

  1. Drawing board day, where new ideas are brought up, but not related to client’s projects.
  2. Lab day, where those ideas are implemented into prototypes.
  3. Show and Tell day, demonstrating new prototypes.

Desires become un-suppressed through innovation. Desires from God come with satisfaction.

From 21st Century Science and Health, 6th edition

Our desires and aspirations ache to be fulfilled and we only feel rewarded when we stop limiting infinite Mind to finite resources. Infinite Mind can’t lose its character as inexhaustible Love, eternal Life, omnipotent Truth.

It is easier to desire Truth than it is to stop our dead end thinking and habits. Human beings may seek the understanding of divine Science, but they will not be able to profit from Christian Science without applying the spiritual facts in their daily life. This endeavor consists of forsaking error of every kind and possessing no other consciousness but good.

When we feel the loss of human peace, the desire for spiritual joy gets stronger. This desire for heavenly good comes even before we discover what belongs to wisdom and Love. The loss of earthly hopes and pleasures brightens the spiritual path. Pain in the body informs us that pleasure in the body is mortal, compelling us to discover spiritual joy.

Unspoken thoughts are not unknown to divine Mind. Prayer is desire. No loss can come from trusting God to form and exalt our desires before they are put into words and action.

The prayer that reforms and heals is an absolute faith that all things good are made possible by God. This type of prayer includes spiritual understanding and unselfish love. Speaking from experience, God has given us the tools of humility, meditation, awareness, and action, to attain improved spirituality and health.

What is the intent of prayer? Do we meditate to improve ourselves or improve humanity and the world? Do we enlighten God? Do we pray so other people can hear us? Is prayer beneficial? Yes, our hunger for righteousness[1] is blessed by our heavenly Parent. The desire for spirituality does not return to us void.

God’s work is done. Prayer doesn’t motivate God to do what has already been done. The Infinite can do nothing less than give all goodness since God is absolute good, wisdom, and Love—the all-knowing Mind. God’s manifestation doesn’t appear simply on the ground of lip-service; however, modest fervent affirmations of God’s presence can kick-start prayer.

Prayer can be dangerous if it tempts us to voice desires that aren’t real or to assume we are more spiritual than we really are. We become involuntary hypocrites when we use prayer to console ourselves without making genuine efforts to break out of illusory mindsets.

Meditation can’t change God’s law, but it can bring us into sync with immortal being. Prayer is not the mere habit of trying to persuade the divine Mind, as we would try to persuade a human being. Methods of prayer that perpetually try to humanize God are sad mistakes—errors that impede spiritual growth. As a first step, we can ask God to deliver us, but by taking more steps, and by demonstrating spiritual goodness, we can reach the living Truth.

God is Love. Can we ask the Infinite to be more? Love is intelligence, Mind. So, what could we possibly tell the all-knowing infinite Mind?

The effective prayer is a fervent desire for growth in grace, expressed in patience, humility, love, and good deeds. To keep the commandments of our teacher Christ Jesus and follow his example, is our proper debt and the only worthy evidence of our gratitude. Jesus said: “If you love me, you will obey what I command.”[2]

Love’s discipline is nourishing. As Love corrects us we advance toward justice, peace, and purity, which are the milestones of Science.

Spiritual and omnipotent Mind lifts humanity above itself into purer desires, even into spiritual power and good-will to humankind.

Golden text: Psalms 103:6*

The Lord works righteousness and justice for all who are oppressed.

Luke 11: 1-4, 37-42

Now Jesus was praying in a certain place, and when he finished, one of his disciples said to him, “Lord, teach us to pray, as John taught his disciples.” And he said to them, “When you pray, say:

“Father, hallowed be your name.
Your kingdom come.
Give us each day our daily bread,
and forgive us our sins,
for we ourselves forgive everyone who is indebted to us.
And lead us not into temptation.”

37 While Jesus was speaking, a Pharisee asked him to dine with him, so he went in and reclined at table. 38 The Pharisee was astonished to see that he did not first wash before dinner. 39 And the Lord said to him, “Now you Pharisees cleanse the outside of the cup and of the dish, but inside you are full of greed and wickedness. 40 You fools! Did not he who made the outside make the inside also? 41 But give as alms those things that are within, and behold, everything is clean for you.

42 “But woe to you Pharisees! For you tithe mint and rue and every herb, and neglect justice and the love of God. These you ought to have done, without neglecting the others.

21st Century Science and Health**

On an individual and collective mission, Jesus’ lifework was done in justice to himself and in mercy to humanity. Jesus gave an excellent example of reconciliation, however, he did not do our work for us. Jesus showed us how to be responsible for our own thoughts and actions. He acted boldly, not only against the self-authorized evidence of human perceptions, but also Pharisaical dogma and practices. With healing power, Jesus proved the powerlessness of all that opposed goodness.

Luke 18: 1-8

And [Jesus] told them a parable to the effect that they ought always to pray and not lose heart. He said, “In a certain city there was a judge who neither feared God nor respected man. And there was a widow in that city who kept coming to him and saying, ‘Give me justice against my adversary.’ For a while he refused, but afterward he said to himself, ‘Though I neither fear God nor respect man, yet because this widow keeps bothering me, I will give her justice, so that she will not beat me down by her continual coming.’” And the Lord said, “Hear what the unrighteous judge says. And will not God give justice to his elect, who cry to him day and night? Will he delay long over them? I tell you, he will give justice to them speedily. Nevertheless, when the Son of Man comes, will he find faith on earth?”

21st Century Science and Health

We should relieve our minds from the depressing thought that we have violated a human law and must of necessity pay the penalty. Let us reassure ourselves with the law of Love. God never punishes us for doing right. Love never penalizes us for honest labor or deeds of kindness, even if we are exposed to fatigue, cold, heat, contagion. If we seem to incur the penalty through matter, this is but the false-ego, or human mind’s thinking. Unfair repercussions are not established by wisdom, and our nonconformity to injustice can nullify the penalty. Through this action of thought and its results upon the body, students will prove to themselves, by small beginnings, the grand verities of divine Science.

We are sustained under all circumstances as we have faith in the divine Principle of health and as we spiritually understand God. The ordinary appeal to have faith in the world’s ways and means must yield to faith in the all-might of infinite Spirit.

Jeremiah 4: 1-4

“If you return, O Israel,
declares the Lord,
to me you should return.
If you remove your detestable things from my presence,
and do not waver,
and if you swear, ‘As the Lord lives,’
in truth, in justice, and in righteousness,
then nations shall bless themselves in him,
and in him shall they glory.”

For thus says the Lord to the men of Judah and Jerusalem:

“Break up your fallow ground,
and sow not among thorns.
Circumcise yourselves to the Lord;
remove the foreskin of your hearts,
O men of Judah and inhabitants of Jerusalem;
lest my wrath go forth like fire,
and burn with none to quench it,
because of the evil of your deeds.”

Jeremiah 9:23-24

23 Thus says the Lord: “Let not the wise man boast in his wisdom, let not the mighty man boast in his might, let not the rich man boast in his riches, 24 but let him who boasts boast in this, that he understands and knows me, that I am the Lord who practices steadfast love, justice, and righteousness in the earth. For in these things I delight, declares the Lord.”

21st Century Science and Health

Finite beliefs can’t do justice to Truth in any direction. It limits all things and would compress infinite Mind into a skull bone. Such belief can’t understand or worship the infinite. The effort to accommodate beginnings and endings tries to break up Soul and substance. It tries to divide the one Spirit into persons and souls.

Justice requires reformation.

Our laws will eventually take cognizance of mental crime and no longer apply legal rulings entirely too physical offences. It will go down in history that how we think or what we think, directly or indirectly affects action, including the action of what we call physical bodies. The medical field is even somewhat recognizing the power of metaphysics. Dr. Dharma Singh Khalsa, M.D., a pioneer in integrative medicine, testifies that, “Meditation is a wondrously powerful medical modality…the meditation that I teach employs not just patients’ mental energies, but also their physical energies”[1]

Whoever uses their developed mental energies or powers to commit opportune atrocities is never safe. God will arrest those people. Divine justice will confine them. Their sins will be millstones about their necks, weighing them down to the depths of disgrace and death. The aggravation of error foretells its doom and confirms the ancient axiom: Whom the gods would destroy, they first make mad.

Conventional medicine advocates drugs, even harmful drugs, and is far from divine Science. Learning the dangers or the uselessness of intrusive medicine, humanity looks in new directions for healing. Humanity begins to understand the power of mind over matter and the importance of better thinking. Be aware: some thought influences can pretend to be good or in our best interest, but are just as dangerous as harmful drugs. This is mental malpractice and is criminal, working against common humanity, honesty, and justice. Divine Mind-practice requires human mind to yield to the divine consciousness and to unite with the spiritual thought moving heavenward.

Deuteronomy 16:17-20

17 Every man shall give as he is able, according to the blessing of the Lord your God that he has given you.

18 “You shall appoint judges and officers in all your towns that the Lord your God is giving you, according to your tribes, and they shall judge the people with righteous judgment. 19 You shall not pervert justice. You shall not show partiality, and you shall not accept a bribe, for a bribe blinds the eyes of the wise and subverts the cause of the righteous. 20 Justice, and only justice, you shall follow, that you may live and inherit the land that the Lord your God is giving you.

21st Century Science and Health

Civil laws are created to implement fairness and equity between the rights of the sexes but more progress is needed, to say the least. Civilization and Science stand strong on the side of justice and encourage the elimination of discrimination, however, every time an effort is made to remedy unfairness, we must be alert that the effort doesn’t encourage difficulties of greater magnitude. Higher aims and motives, as well as improved mental character, must be considered as the feasible and rational means of progress.

Global injustice between the sexes is a crying evil caused by the arrogance and inhumanity of mortals. We must exercise our faith in the direction taught by the Apostle James, when he said: “Religion that God and Father accepts as pure and faultless is this: to look after orphans and widows in their distress and to keep oneself from being polluted by the world.”[2]

Allow unselfishness, goodness, mercy, justice, health, holiness, and love to control your mind and body.

This is an era when we live and think in terms of science, therefore proof and demonstration, instead of opinion and dogma, are called upon to support spirituality, “making wise the simple.”[3]

The goodness we live is the nemesis of negative inclinations. Spirituality in action, demonstrates the government of God, good, in which is no power to act against life, truth, and love.

And we solemnly promise to be mindful, to pray for that Mind to be in us which was also in Christ Jesus; to do to others as we would have them do to us;[4] and to be merciful, just, and pure.

Matthew 5: 2, 21-26

And [Jesus] opened his mouth and taught them, saying:

“You have heard that it was said to those of old, ‘You shall not murder; and whoever murders will be liable to judgment.’ 22 But I say to you that everyone who is angry with his brother will be liable to judgment; whoever insults his brother will be liable to the council; and whoever says, ‘You fool!’ will be liable to the hell of fire. 23 So if you are offering your gift at the altar and there remember that your brother has something against you, 24 leave your gift there before the altar and go. First be reconciled to your brother, and then come and offer your gift. 25 Come to terms quickly with your accuser while you are going with him to court, lest your accuser hand you over to the judge, and the judge to the guard, and you be put in prison. 26 Truly, I say to you, you will never get out until you have paid the last penny.

From 21st Century Science and Health**

Revenge is unacceptable. Revenge only placates anger, whereas anger needs to be destroyed.

To love our neighbor’s spiritual nature as we love our own spirituality, is a divine idea; but this idea can never be seen, felt, or understood through the physical senses. Excite the organ of admiration or religious faith and a person manifests profound adoration. Excite the feelings of anger or pessimism and the person curses God. These effects, however, do not proceed from spirituality. Idolization and irreverence are both spin-offs of mortal belief.

The Science of Mind must come to the rescue and work a radical cure, and we then understand the process. The great fact remains that evil is not mind. Evil has no power, no intelligence, for God is good, and therefore good is limitless, is All.

Mark 3: 1-6

Again he entered the synagogue, and a man was there with a withered hand. And they watched Jesus, to see whether he would heal him on the Sabbath, so that they might accuse him. And he said to the man with the withered hand, “Come here.” And he said to them, “Is it lawful on the Sabbath to do good or to do harm, to save life or to kill?” But they were silent. And he looked around at them with anger, grieved at their hardness of heart, and said to the man, “Stretch out your hand.” He stretched it out, and his hand was restored. The Pharisees went out and immediately held counsel with the Herodians against him, how to destroy him.

From 21st Century Science and Health

Jesus taught and showed us Life’s power to dissolve anything that opposes unlimited Truth.

Doctors, therapists, and so on, though humane, are artists who outline their thoughts relative to disease. They then fill in their delineations with sketches from textbooks. It is better to prevent disease from forming in human mind afterward to appear on the body; but to do this requires attention. The thought of disease is formed before a doctor’s visit, even before the doctor undertakes to dispel it with an antibiotic, a blood thinner, or a surgical operation.

When the medical field finds no biological or physical cause for symptoms of disease, various forms of psychotherapy have been known to improve the unhealthy condition. Psychosomatic illnesses or psychophysiological disorders are admitted to be problems caused by mental processes. They are problems in the mind, and once the mind is corrected, the symptoms vanish as illusions vanish. Mental conditions, such as severe stress, anger, anxiety, resentment, depression, and guilt have produced rashes, allergies, loss of hair, eating disorders, and pain, among other problems. So, why not approve of a cure which in effect makes any disease appear to be what it really is—an illusion?

Here is the difficulty: it is not generally understood how one disease can be just as much a delusion as another. It is a pity that the medical faculty and clergy have not learned this, for Jesus established this fundamental fact when devils (delusions) were driven to oblivion and the mute spoke.

Mark 3: 7-21

Jesus withdrew with his disciples to the sea, and a great crowd followed, from Galilee and Judea and Jerusalem and Idumea and from beyond the Jordan and from around Tyre and Sidon. When the great crowd heard all that he was doing, they came to him. And he told his disciples to have a boat ready for him because of the crowd, lest they crush him, 10 for he had healed many, so that all who had diseases pressed around him to touch him. 11 And whenever the unclean spirits saw him, they fell down before him and cried out, “You are the Son of God.” 12 And he strictly ordered them not to make him known.

13 And he went up on the mountain and called to him those whom he desired, and they came to him. 14 And he appointed twelve (whom he also named apostles) so that they might be with him and he might send them out to preach 15 and have authority to cast out demons. 16 He appointed the twelve: Simon (to whom he gave the name Peter); 17 James the son of Zebedee and John the brother of James (to whom he gave the name Boanerges, that is, Sons of Thunder); 18 Andrew, and Philip, and Bartholomew, and Matthew, and Thomas, and James the son of Alphaeus, and Thaddaeus, and Simon the Zealot, 19 and Judas Iscariot, who betrayed him.

20 Then he went home, and the crowd gathered again, so that they could not even eat. 21 And when his family heard it, they went out to seize him, for they were saying, “He is out of his mind.”

From 21st Century Science and Health

Retreat from the belief of pain or pleasure in body and advance into the unchanging calm and glorious freedom of spiritual harmony.

Immortal Mind heals what eye has not seen. The spiritual ability to comprehend thought and to heal by the Truth-power is won only as we are found reflecting the divine nature. Put in other words, self-glorification, arrogance, anger, and the like, are not found in Truth healing.

Scientists may call on one another for metaphysical treatment. However, if the callers don’t receive relief or help, they can be confident that God will guide them to use appropriately the temporary and eternal treatments. Step by step, as we trust Spirit, we will find that “God is our shelter, our strength, ever ready to help in time of trouble.”[1]

I advise students to be charitable and kind, not only toward differing forms of religion and medicine, but to the very people who hold these differing opinions.

Mark 3: 22-35

22 And the scribes who came down from Jerusalem were saying, “He is possessed by Beelzebul,” and “by the prince of demons he casts out the demons.” 23 And he called them to him and said to them in parables, “How can Satan cast out Satan? 24 If a kingdom is divided against itself, that kingdom cannot stand. 25 And if a house is divided against itself, that house will not be able to stand. 26 And if Satan has risen up against himself and is divided, he cannot stand, but is coming to an end. 27 But no one can enter a strong man’s house and plunder his goods, unless he first binds the strong man. Then indeed he may plunder his house.

28 “Truly, I say to you, all sins will be forgiven the children of man, and whatever blasphemies they utter, 29 but whoever blasphemes against the Holy Spirit never has forgiveness, but is guilty of an eternal sin”— 30 for they were saying, “He has an unclean spirit.”

31 And his mother and his brothers came, and standing outside they sent to him and called him. 32 And a crowd was sitting around him, and they said to him, “Your mother and your brothers are outside, seeking you.” 33 And he answered them, “Who are my mother and my brothers?” 34 And looking about at those who sat around him, he said, “Here are my mother and my brothers! 35 For whoever does the will of God, he is my brother and sister and mother.”

The origin, the character, and the work of Jesus were not generally understood. Even his righteousness and purity didn’t stop the crowds from saying: He is a glutton and a friend of the impure, and Beelzebub is his supporter.[2] The materialist is unable to evaluate properly the nature of spirituality.

It is a sad day for the person who professes to practice and be faithful to divine Science but fails to strangle the serpent of sin as well as of sickness! They are still living in their self-sabotaging comfort-zones and human passions. They are in the turbulent sea of error, not struggling to lift their heads above the drowning wave.

People, who touch the fringe of Christ’s garment[3] and master their illegitimate convictions, their angers, and their fight-or-flight reactions, will rejoice in the proof of healing—in a sweet and certain sense that God is Love.

Divine Science, understood, coincides with the Scriptures and sustains logically and demonstratively every point it presents, otherwise it would not be Science and could not present results. Mind-science is not made up of paradoxical clichés or of the inventions of those who ridicule God. Science presents the calm and clear verdict of Truth against error, voiced and illustrated by the prophets, by Jesus, and by his apostles—as recorded throughout Scripture.

Do not let fear or doubt eclipse your clear sense and calm trust in Truth. The recognition of life harmonious—as Life eternally is—can destroy any painful sense of, or belief in, that which Life is not. Let divine Science, instead of fleshly sense, support your understanding of being and this understanding will exchange error for Truth, replace physicality with spirituality, and silence complaint with harmony.

Golden text: Psalms 33:4-5*

For the word of the Lord is upright, and all his work is done in faithfulness. He loves righteousness and justice; the earth is full of the steadfast love of the Lord.

Genesis 37: 3-4, 17-24

Now Israel loved Joseph more than any other of his sons, because he was the son of his old age. And he made him a robe of many colors. But when his brothers saw that their father loved him more than all his brothers, they hated him and could not speak peacefully to him.

17So Joseph went after his brothers and found them at Dothan.

18 They saw him from afar, and before he came near to them they conspired against him to kill him. 19 They said to one another, “Here comes this dreamer. 20 Come now, let us kill him and throw him into one of the pits. Then we will say that a fierce animal has devoured him, and we will see what will become of his dreams.” 21 But when Reuben heard it, he rescued him out of their hands, saying, “Let us not take his life.” 22 And Reuben said to them, “Shed no blood; throw him into this pit here in the wilderness, but do not lay a hand on him”—that he might rescue him out of their hand to restore him to his father. 23 So when Joseph came to his brothers, they stripped him of his robe, the robe of many colors that he wore. 24 And they took him and threw him into a pit. The pit was empty; there was no water in it.

Human beings are made up of involuntary and voluntary error, of a negative right and a positive wrong, the latter calling itself right. The individuality of spiritual person is never wrong. Our spirituality is the likeness of God, Truth. Matter cannot connect humans with spiritual being. The demands of matter are annulled as we acknowledge the supremacy of Spirit. It is only in this way that human beings can advance out of mortality and find the indissoluble spiritual link which establishes us forever in the divine likeness, inseparable from divine Mind.

Reuben (Jacob’s son). Corporeality; sensuality; delusion; mortality; error.

The anatomy of Christian Science teaches when and how to examine the self-inflicted wounds of ill-will, hostility, envy, and excuse making. It teaches the control of foolish ambition. It unfolds the sacred influences of honesty, philanthropy, spiritual love.

The theories of temporal systems are sometimes destructive, and to deny them is better than affirming them. Will you urge people to let evils overcome them? Would you assure a person that all misfortunes are from God, against whom human beings should not fight? Will you tell the sick that their condition is hopeless, unless it can be aided by a drug, operation, or different climate? Are temporal means the only refuge from fatal chances? Is there no divine permission to conquer disorder of every kind with harmony, with Truth and Love?

Genesis 37: 28-30, 36

28 Then Midianite traders passed by. And they drew Joseph up and lifted him out of the pit, and sold him to the Ishmaelites for twenty shekels of silver. They took Joseph to Egypt.

29 When Reuben returned to the pit and saw that Joseph was not in the pit, he tore his clothes 30 and returned to his brothers and said, “The boy is gone, and I, where shall I go?”

36 Meanwhile the Midianites had sold him in Egypt to Potiphar, an officer of Pharaoh, the captain of the guard.

Isaiah 42:1-4

Behold my servant, whom I uphold,
my chosen, in whom my soul delights;
I have put my Spirit upon him;
he will bring forth justice to the nations.
He will not cry aloud or lift up his voice,
or make it heard in the street;
a bruised reed he will not break,
and a faintly burning wick he will not quench;
he will faithfully bring forth justice.
He will not grow faint or be discouraged
till he has established justice in the earth;
and the coastlands wait for his law.

From 21st Century Science and Health

Accidents are unknown to God, or perpetual Mind. We must leave the worldly basis of thinking and unite with the one Mind, in order to change the notion of chance to the proper sense of God’s perfect direction, and thereby bring out harmony.

The appearance of good, as was promised by Jesus, establishes the divine system among humanity. Now, as in earlier times, signs and wonders are meant to elucidate the divine origin and substantiate the reality of Truth. The higher mission of Science is not physical healing, but is to take away the sins of the world.

The interpretation of God as a Savior of the physical, instead of as the saving Principle or divine Love, triggers us to look for salvation through pardon and not through reform.

We must desire to establish ourselves in what is pure and perfect.

Romans 8: 6-39

Likewise the Spirit helps us in our weakness. For we do not know what to pray for as we ought, but the Spirit himself intercedes for us with groanings too deep for words. 27 And he who searches hearts knows what is the mind of the Spirit, because the Spirit intercedes for the saints according to the will of God. 28 And we know that for those who love God all things work together for good, for those who are called according to his purpose. 29 For those whom he foreknew he also predestined to be conformed to the image of his Son, in order that he might be the firstborn among many brothers. 30 And those whom he predestined he also called, and those whom he called he also justified, and those whom he justified he also glorified.

31 What then shall we say to these things? If God is for us, who can be against us? 32 He who did not spare his own Son but gave him up for us all, how will he not also with him graciously give us all things? 33 Who shall bring any charge against God’s elect? It is God who justifies. 34 Who is to condemn? Christ Jesus is the one who died—more than that, who was raised—who is at the right hand of God, who indeed is interceding for usj 35 Who shall separate us from the love of Christ? Shall tribulation, or distress, or persecution, or famine, or nakedness, or danger, or sword? 36 As it is written,

“For your sake we are being killed all the day long;
we are regarded as sheep to be slaughtered.”

37 No, in all these things we are more than conquerors through him who loved us. 38 For I am sure that neither death nor life, nor angels nor rulers, nor things present nor things to come, nor powers, 39 nor height nor depth, nor anything else in all creation, will be able to separate us from the love of God in Christ Jesus our Lord.

From 21st Century Science and Health

Guard against some common religious opinions, such as a breakable relationship with God. If Life or Soul and its representative, person, unite for a period and then are separated as by a law of divorce, to be brought together again at some uncertain future time and in manner unknown, we are left without a rational proof of immortality. We can’t be separated for an instant from God, if reflecting God. Thus Science proves our spiritual being to be intact.

The plethora of human thought forms, apparently materialized, are not more distinct or real to the physical sense than are the Soul-created forms to spiritual sense. The senses of Spirit cognizes Life as permanent, and are undisturbed even amid the jarring testimony of the mortal senses. Christian Science is consistently revealing to human beings the perpetual divine Principle—is unfolding Life and the universe, ever present and eternal.

Our individuality is no less tangible because it is spiritual. We are not at the mercy of matter. The understanding of our spiritual individuality makes us more real, more awe-inspiring in truth, and more able to conquer sin, disease, and death.

Psalms 33: 18-22

18Behold, the eye of the Lord is on those who fear him, on those who hope in his steadfast love, 19 that he may deliver their soul from death and keep them alive in famine. 20 Our soul waits for the Lord; he is our help and our shield. 21 For our heart is glad in him, because we trust in his holy name. 22 Let your steadfast love, O Lord, be upon us, even as we hope in you.

From 21st Century Science and Health

Envy buries trust and love. Mistrust is a rotten apple in a relationship.

Torture, dictatorship, repression, intolerance, and bloodshed, wherever found, arise from the belief that the infinite is formed after the paradigm of human personality, passions, and urges. Nations owe their untrustworthy governments to their prevalent misconceptions of God.

You must trust your ability to experience goodness and to bring out better and higher results.

Question. What are the requirements of the Science of Soul?

Answer. The first requirement of this Science is, “You shall have no other gods before me.”[1] This me is Spirit. Therefore the command means this: You shall have no intelligence, no life, no substance, no truth, and no love, except the spiritual. The second command, you shall “love your neighbor as yourself”[2] is like the first.

It should be thoroughly understood that all people have one Mind, one God and Father, one Life, Truth, and Love.

Golden text: John 9:4-5*

We must work the works of him who sent me while it is day; night is coming, when no one can work. As long as I am in the world, I am the light of the world.”

John 6:26-36

26 Jesus answered them, “Truly, truly, I say to you, you are seeking me, not because you saw signs, but because you ate your fill of the loaves. 27 Do not work for the food that perishes, but for the food that endures to eternal life, which the Son of Man will give to you. For on him God the Father has set his seal.” 28 Then they said to him, “What must we do, to be doing the works of God?” 29 Jesus answered them, “This is the work of God, that you believe in him whom he has sent.” 30 So they said to him, “Then what sign do you do, that we may see and believe you? What work do you perform? 31 Our fathers ate the manna in the wilderness; as it is written, ‘He gave them bread from heaven to eat.’” 32 Jesus then said to them, “Truly, truly, I say to you, it was not Moses who gave you the bread from heaven, but my Father gives you the true bread from heaven. 33 For the bread of God is he who comes down from heaven and gives life to the world.” 34 They said to him, “Sir, give us this bread always.” 35 Jesus said to them, “I am the bread of life; whoever comes to me shall not hunger, and whoever believes in me shall never thirst. 36 But I said to you that you have seen me and yet do not believe.

From 21st Century Science and Health**

Jesus taught that the mortal senses shut out Truth and its healing power. By employing our spiritual senses, we change for the better and feel regenerated.

A clergyman once adopted a diet of bread and water to increase his spirituality. Finding his health failing, he gave up his asceticism and advised others never to try dietetics for growth in grace.

The fact is, food does not affect our absolute Life, and this becomes self-evident when we learn that God is our Life. Because sin and sickness are not qualities of Soul, or Life, we have hope in spirituality. Nevertheless, it would be foolish to stop eating a healthy balanced diet, or to stop exercising, until we gain perfection and a clear comprehension of the living Spirit. In that perfect day of understanding, we shall neither eat to live nor live to eat.

Human beings must have trials and self-denials, as well as joys and victories, until all error is destroyed.

I Corinthians 9:1-12

Am I [Paul] not free? Am I not an apostle? Have I not seen Jesus our Lord? Are not you my workmanship in the Lord? If to others I am not an apostle, at least I am to you, for you are the seal of my apostleship in the Lord. This is my defense to those who would examine me. Do we not have the right to eat and drink? Do we not have the right to take along a believing wife, as do the other apostles and the brothers of the Lord and Cephas? Or is it only Barnabas and I who have no right to refrain from working for a living? Who serves as a soldier at his own expense? Who plants a vineyard without eating any of its fruit? Or who tends a flock without getting some of the milk?

Do I say these things on human authority? Does not the Law say the same? For it is written in the Law of Moses, “You shall not muzzle an ox when it treads out the grain.” Is it for oxen that God is concerned? 10 Does he not certainly speak for our sake? It was written for our sake, because the plowman should plow in hope and the thresher thresh in hope of sharing in the crop. 11 If we have sown spiritual things among you, is it too much if we reap material things from you? 12 If others share this rightful claim on you, do not we even more? Nevertheless, we have not made use of this right, but we endure anything rather than put an obstacle in the way of the gospel of Christ.

From 21st Century Science and Health

The medicine of Science is divine Mind, not human mind. The human attitudes of dishonesty, sensuality, greed, revenge, and malice, cannot heal the sick. Thoughts that try to control another person are crude tendencies and by no means the mental qualities which heal. The hypnotizer employs one error to destroy another. The mental mal-practitioner heals sickness through a belief, when it was a belief which originally caused the sickness. This is a case of a greater error overcoming a lesser. The greater error thereafter occupies the ground, leaving the case worse than before.

While dwelling on a physical plane, human terms must generally be employed to speak of the things of Spirit. It takes time for human thought to adjust to the higher meaning. Thought must be educated to perceive spirituality. To a certain extent, improved thought is necessary in all learning, even in that which is secular.

The terms divine Science, spiritual Science, metaphysical Science, the Science of Truth and Love, Christian Science, or Science alone, are employed interchangeably according to the requirements of the context. These synonymous terms stand for everything relating to God, the infinite, supreme, eternal Mind. It may be said, however, that the term Christian Science relates especially to Science as applied to humanity. Divine Science reveals God, not as the author of sin, sickness, and death, but as absolute Principle, Supreme Being, Mind, exempt from all evil. It teaches that materialism or limitation is the falsity, not the fact, of existence. Nerves, brain, stomach, lungs, and so forth, have—as matter—no intelligence, life, or sensation.

I Corinthians 9: 13-27

Do you not know that those who are employed in the temple service get their food from the temple, and those who serve at the altar share in the sacrificial offerings? 14 In the same way, the Lord commanded that those who proclaim the gospel should get their living by the gospel.

15 But I have made no use of any of these rights, nor am I writing these things to secure any such provision. For I would rather die than have anyone deprive me of my ground for boasting. 16 For if I preach the gospel, that gives me no ground for boasting. For necessity is laid upon me. Woe to me if I do not preach the gospel! 17 For if I do this of my own will, I have a reward, but if not of my own will, I am still entrusted with a stewardship. 18 What then is my reward? That in my preaching I may present the gospel free of charge, so as not to make full use of my right in the gospel.

19 For though I am free from all, I have made myself a servant to all, that I might win more of them. 20 To the Jews I became as a Jew, in order to win Jews. To those under the law I became as one under the law (though not being myself under the law) that I might win those under the law. 21 To those outside the law I became as one outside the law (not being outside the law of God but under the law of Christ) that I might win those outside the law. 22 To the weak I became weak, that I might win the weak. I have become all things to all people, that by all means I might save some. 23 I do it all for the sake of the gospel, that I may share with them in its blessings.

24 Do you not know that in a race all the runners run, but only one receives the prize? So run that you may obtain it. 25 Every athlete exercises self-control in all things. They do it to receive a perishable wreath, but we an imperishable. 26 So I do not run aimlessly; I do not box as one beating the air. 27 But I discipline my body and keep it under control, lest after preaching to others I myself should be disqualified.

From 21st Century Science and Health

Your thinking can work against your health, so it is better to employ your thinking on the side of health. You make yourself sick through the false belief of sickness even before you rush after drugs, get blood tests, and avoid society for fear of germs.

Because human-made systems insist that we can become sick and useless, suffer and die, all in agreement with the laws of God, or nature, are we to believe it? Are we to believe an authority which denies God’s spiritual command relating to perfection—an authority which Jesus proved to be false? Jesus did the will of the Father. He healed sickness in defiance of what is called physical law, but in accordance with Mind’s law.

Hebrews 6:7-12

For land that has drunk the rain that often falls on it, and produces a crop useful to those for whose sake it is cultivated, receives a blessing from God. But if it bears thorns and thistles, it is worthless and near to being cursed, and its end is to be burned.

Though we speak in this way, yet in your case, beloved, we feel sure of better things—things that belong to salvation. 10 For God is not unjust so as to overlook your work and the love that you have shown for his name in serving the saints, as you still do. 11 And we desire each one of you to show the same earnestness to have the full assurance of hope until the end, 12 so that you may not be sluggish, but imitators of those who through faith and patience inherit the promises.

From 21st Century Science and Health

Physicians, whom the sick employ in their helplessness, should be models of integrity. They should be wise spiritual guides to health and hope. To the frightened patient on the brink of death, physicians can be prepared to share an understanding of the Truth that is Life. When the soul is willing and the flesh is weak, the patient may be willing to learn of the ever-perpetuating Life, and plant their feet on the rock of Christ, the true idea of spiritual power.

Let us be faithful in pointing the way through Christ, as we understand it, but let us also be careful always to “stop judging by mere appearances, and make a right judgment.”[1] Never condemn rashly.

In the presence of a sick person, employ tender words and spiritual encouragement. Patiently remove all fears, without gushing theories, stereotyped clichés, and rigid arguments which are so many misrepresentations of divine Science, aflame with divine Love.

God did not need Jesus’ example to preserve the eternal harmony, however human beings did, and Jesus pointed the way.

[Jesus] explored the way and we all have the same cup of poignant effort to drink.

The Christ is bodiless, spiritual—the holy image and likeness, dispelling the illusions of the senses; the Way, the Truth, and the Life, healing the sick and driving out evils, destroying sin, disease, and death.

Light extinguishes the darkness— there is “no night there.”[2] To Truth there is no error, all is Truth.

Golden text: Psalm 4:6*

There are many who say, “Who will show us some good? Lift up the light of your face upon us, O Lord!”

Matthew 19:16-30

And behold, a man came up to him, saying, “Teacher, what good deed must I do to have eternal life?” 17 And he said to him, “Why do you ask me about what is good? There is only one who is good. If you would enter life, keep the commandments.” 18 He said to him, “Which ones?” And Jesus said, “You shall not murder, You shall not commit adultery, You shall not steal, You shall not bear false witness, 19 Honor your father and mother, and, You shall love your neighbor as yourself.” 20 The young man said to him, “All these I have kept. What do I still lack?” 21 Jesus said to him, “If you would be perfect, go, sell what you possess and give to the poor, and you will have treasure in heaven; and come, follow me.” 22 When the young man heard this he went away sorrowful, for he had great possessions.

23 And Jesus said to his disciples, “Truly, I say to you, only with difficulty will a rich person enter the kingdom of heaven. 24 Again I tell you, it is easier for a camel to go through the eye of a needle than for a rich person to enter the kingdom of God.” 25 When the disciples heard this, they were greatly astonished, saying, “Who then can be saved?” 26 But Jesus looked at them and said, “With man this is impossible, but with God all things are possible.” 27 Then Peter said in reply, “See, we have left everything and followed you. What then will we have?” 28 Jesus said to them, “Truly, I say to you, in the new world, when the Son of Man will sit on his glorious throne, you who have followed me will also sit on twelve thrones, judging the twelve tribes of Israel. 29 And everyone who has left houses or brothers or sisters or father or mother or children or lands, for my name’s sake, will receive a hundredfold and will inherit eternal life. 30 But many who are first will be last, and the last first.

From 21st Century Science and Health**

Human mind must part with error, must put off itself with its deeds, and then spirituality, the Christ ideal, will appear. Faith should enlarge its borders and strengthen its foundation by resting on Spirit instead of matter.

Heaven is not a locality, but a divine state of Mind in which all the manifestations of Mind are harmonious and immortal because sin is not there and God’s person is found having no self-righteousness, but is in possession of “the mind of the Lord,”[1] as the Scripture say.

I Timothy 1:5-11 (The Message)

The whole point of what we’re urging is simply love—love uncontaminated by self-interest and counterfeit faith, a life open to God. Those who fail to keep to this point soon wander off into cul-de-sacs of gossip. They set themselves up as experts on religious issues, but haven’t the remotest idea of what they’re holding forth with such imposing eloquence.

8-11 It’s true that moral guidance and counsel need to be given, but the way you say it and to whom you say it are as important as what you say. It’s obvious, isn’t it, that the law code isn’t primarily for people who live responsibly, but for the irresponsible, who defy all authority, riding roughshod over God, life, sex, truth, whatever! They are contemptuous of this great Message I’ve been put in charge of by this great God.

From 21st Century Science and Health

Human beings assume that they can live without goodness, when God is good and the only real Life. What is the result? They understand little about the divine Principle which saves and heals, and they get rid of sin, sickness, and death only in the temporal imagination. These errors thereby are not really destroyed. All that is unlike God will taint mortals until, here or hereafter, they gain the true understanding of God in the Science which destroys human delusions and reveals the grand realities of Spirit’s allness.

Acts 14:8-18

Now at Lystra there was a man sitting who could not use his feet. He was crippled from birth and had never walked. He listened to Paul speaking. And Paul, looking intently at him and seeing that he had faith to be made well, 10 said in a loud voice, “Stand upright on your feet.” And he sprang up and began walking. 11 And when the crowds saw what Paul had done, they lifted up their voices, saying in Lycaonian, “The gods have come down to us in the likeness of men!” 12 Barnabas they called Zeus, and Paul, Hermes, because he was the chief speaker. 13 And the priest of Zeus, whose temple was at the entrance to the city, brought oxen and garlands to the gates and wanted to offer sacrifice with the crowds. 14 But when the apostles Barnabas and Paul heard of it, they tore their garments and rushed out into the crowd, crying out, 15 “Men, why are you doing these things? We also are men, of like nature with you, and we bring you good news, that you should turn from these vain things to a living God, who made the heaven and the earth and the sea and all that is in them. 16 In past generations he allowed all the nations to walk in their own ways. 17 Yet he did not leave himself without witness, for he did good by giving you rains from heaven and fruitful seasons, satisfying your hearts with food and gladness.” 18 Even with these words they scarcely restrained the people from offering sacrifice to them.

From 21st Century Science and Health

The five physical senses are the avenues and instruments of human error. The limited senses bear witness to the entrenched human belief that life, substance, and intelligence is a mixture of the temporal and the eternal. This thinking constantly campaigns for error and carries within itself the seeds of all error.

Students of divine Science, who start with its letter and think to succeed without the spirit, will either weaken their faith or get sadly off course. They must not only seek, but strive, to enter the narrow path of Life, “for the gate is wide and the road is easy that leads to destruction, and there are many who take it.”[2] We walk in the direction toward which we look, and where our gratification is, there will our heart be also. If our hopes and inclinations are spiritual, they come from enlightenment, not from trained thinking, and they produce the fruits of the Spirit.[3]

Psalm 52

Why do you boast of evil, O mighty man? The steadfast love of God endures all the day.
Your tongue plots destruction, like a sharp razor, you worker of deceit.
You love evil more than good, and lying more than speaking what is right. Selah
You love all words that devour, O deceitful tongue.

But God will break you down forever; he will snatch and tear you from your tent;
he will uproot you from the land of the living. Selah
The righteous shall see and fear, and shall laugh at him, saying,
“See the man who would not make God his refuge, but trusted in the abundance of his riches
and sought refuge in his own destruction!”

But I am like a green olive tree in the house of God. I trust in the steadfast love of God
forever and ever.
I will thank you forever, because you have done it. I will wait for your name, for it is good,
in the presence of the godly.

From 21st Century Science and Health

People don’t die young because they occupy the most important jobs and perform the most vital functions in society. If leading thinkers and doers die young, it’s not because they occupied an important position. Think of Anglo-Irish explorer Ernest Shackelton,[4] and his expedition crew, who all survived overwhelming adversity in their 1914–1916 Antarctic expedition. Persons who act on integrity and goodness do not pay severe penalties. By adhering to the realities of spirituality—instead of reading studies on the inconsistent assumption that death comes in obedience to the law of life, and that God punishes people for doing good—one cannot suffer as the result of any labor of love, but grows stronger because of it. It is a law of so-called human mind, misnamed matter, which causes all things discordant.

The history of Christianity furnishes sublime proofs of the supporting influence and protecting power bestowed on us by our heavenly Father-Mother. Omnipotent Mind gives us faith and understanding whereby to safeguard our self, not only from temptation, but also from bodily suffering.

Here is a summary of four fundamental propositions of divine metaphysics. To me, they are self-evident. The propositions agree in statement and proof even if reversed.

  1. God is All-in-all.
  2. God is good. Good is Mind.
  3. God, Spirit, being all, nothing is matter.
  4. Life, God, omnipotent good, deny death, evil, sin, disease. Disease, sin, evil, death, deny good, omnipotent God, Life.

The dream that human mind and error are real or permanent must yield to reason and enlightenment. Then human beings will perceive the insubstantiality of sin and sickness, and sin and sickness will disappear from consciousness. The harmonious will appear real and the inharmonious will become extinct.

The false claim of error continues its delusions until the goal of goodness is steadfastly earned and won.

Immortal and divine Mind presents the idea of God: first, in light (enlightenment), second, in reflection, third, in spiritual and immortal forms of beauty and goodness.
