bible study imageSubject: Response

Golden text: Hosea 2: 20-21

I will betroth you in faithfulness, and you will acknowledge the Lord. 21 “In that day I will respond,” declares the Lord—“I will respond to the skies, and they will respond to the earth;

I Kings 18: 15-26

Elijah said, “As the Lord Almighty lives, whom I serve, I will surely present myself to Ahab today.”

16 So Obadiah went to meet Ahab and told him, and Ahab went to meet Elijah. 17 When he saw Elijah, he said to him, “Is that you, you troubler of Israel?”

18 “I have not made trouble for Israel,” Elijah replied. “But you and your father’s family have. You have abandoned the Lord’s commands and have followed the Baals. 19 Now summon the people from all over Israel to meet me on Mount Carmel. And bring the four hundred and fifty prophets of Baal and the four hundred prophets of Asherah, who eat at Jezebel’s table.”

20 So Ahab sent word throughout all Israel and assembled the prophets on Mount Carmel. 21 Elijah went before the people and said, “How long will you waver between two opinions? If the Lord is God, follow him; but if Baal is God, follow him.”

But the people said nothing.

22 Then Elijah said to them, “I am the only one of the Lord’s prophets left, but Baal has four hundred and fifty prophets. 23 Get two bulls for us. Let Baal’s prophets choose one for themselves, and let them cut it into pieces and put it on the wood but not set fire to it. I will prepare the other bull and put it on the wood but not set fire to it. 24 Then you call on the name of your god, and I will call on the name of the Lord. The god who answers by fire—he is God.”

Then all the people said, “What you say is good.”

25 Elijah said to the prophets of Baal, “Choose one of the bulls and prepare it first, since there are so many of you. Call on the name of your god, but do not light the fire.” 26 So they took the bull given them and prepared it.

Then they called on the name of Baal from morning till noon. “Baal, answer us!” they shouted. But there was no response; no one answered.

From 21st Century Science and Health

Our responses need improvement if we typically say things like, “You look sick,” “You must be tired.” or “You need a pill.”

Why do people run to a child who has fallen, and whine childishly “Oh, poor thing, I know you hurt”? The better and more successful response to adopt is: “You’re Okay, let’s think about what’s good.” Soon the child forgets all about the accident and is directed to positive activity.

Some people respond slowly to the touch of Truth. Some people feel Truth’s touch without a struggle. Many people are reluctant to admit that they have responded to Truth; however, if they don’t admit their improvement, the boastings of evil will shout over good.

I Kings 18: 27-39

At noon Elijah began to taunt them. “Shout louder!” he said. “Surely he is a god! Perhaps he is deep in thought, or busy, or traveling. Maybe he is sleeping and must be awakened.” 28 So they shouted louder and slashed themselves with swords and spears, as was their custom, until their blood flowed. 29 Midday passed, and they continued their frantic prophesying until the time for the evening sacrifice. But there was no response, no one answered, no one paid attention.

30 Then Elijah said to all the people, “Come here to me.” They came to him, and he repaired the altar of the Lord, which had been torn down. 31 Elijah took twelve stones, one for each of the tribes descended from Jacob, to whom the word of the Lord had come, saying, “Your name shall be Israel.” 32 With the stones he built an altar in the name of the Lord, and he dug a trench around it large enough to hold two seahs of seed. 33 He arranged the wood, cut the bull into pieces and laid it on the wood. Then he said to them, “Fill four large jars with water and pour it on the offering and on the wood.”

34 “Do it again,” he said, and they did it again. “Do it a third time,” he ordered, and they did it the third time. 35 The water ran down around the altar and even filled the trench.

36 At the time of sacrifice, the prophet Elijah stepped forward and prayed: “Lord, the God of Abraham, Isaac and Israel, let it be known today that you are God in Israel and that I am your servant and have done all these things at your command. 37 Answer me, Lord, answer me, so these people will know that you, Lord, are God, and that you are turning their hearts back again.”

38 Then the fire of the Lord fell and burned up the sacrifice, the wood, the stones and the soil, and also licked up the water in the trench. 39 When all the people saw this, they fell prostrate and cried, “The Lord—he is God! The Lord—he is God!”

If you believe that you are sick, is it better to say, “I am sick”? No, although you should sometimes responsibly tell other people you are sick in order to protect them. If you commit a crime, should you acknowledge to yourself that you are a criminal? Yes. Your responses differ because of the different effects they produce. Usually to admit that you are sick renders your case less curable, while to recognize your sin, helps destroy it. Both sin and sickness are error, and Truth is their remedy. The truth regarding error is that error is not true, hence it is unreal. To prove scientifically the error or unreality of sin, you must first see the claim of sin and then destroy it. Whereas, to prove scientifically the error or unreality of disease, you must mentally stop perceiving the disease; then you will not feel it and disease is destroyed.

Galatians 2: 1-2, 6-7

Then after fourteen years, I went up again to Jerusalem, this time with Barnabas. I took Titus along also. I went in response to a revelation and, meeting privately with those esteemed as leaders, I presented to them the gospel that I preach among the Gentiles. I wanted to be sure I was not running and had not been running my race in vain.

As for those who were held in high esteem—whatever they were makes no difference to me; God does not show favoritism—they added nothing to my message. On the contrary, they recognized that I had been entrusted with the task of preaching the gospel to the uncircumcised, just as Peter had been to the circumcised.

Systematic teaching and the student’s spiritual growth and experience in practice are requisite for a thorough comprehension of the Science of Mind-healing. Some individuals realize truth more readily than others, but any student, who remains true to the divine rules of spiritual Science and becomes one with the spirit of Christ, can demonstrate Science, overcome error, heal the sick, and add continually to their supply of spiritual understanding, power, enlightenment, and success.

John 7: 40-46

40 On hearing [Jesus’] words, some of the people said, “Surely this man is the Prophet.”

41 Others said, “He is the Messiah.”

Still others asked, “How can the Messiah come from Galilee? 42 Does not Scripture say that the Messiah will come from David’s descendants and from Bethlehem, the town where David lived?” 43 Thus the people were divided because of Jesus. 44 Some wanted to seize him, but no one laid a hand on him.

45 Finally the temple guards went back to the chief priests and the Pharisees, who asked them, “Why didn’t you bring him in?” 46 “No one ever spoke the way this man does,” the guards replied.

From 21st Century Science and Health

Eloquence re-echoes the tones of Truth and Love. It is due to inspiration rather than erudition and shows the possibilities derived from divine Mind. Sometimes, eloquence is determined to be a gift from departed spirits, but what is the medium capable of knowing or saying when the spirit is absent? This question leads to the answer that channeled eloquence involves beliefs that can be undone. The medium first believes they are ignorant and can’t speak, yet that belief is let loose and the medium then believes a departed spirit possesses and is speaking through them only for that belief to fall flat when the departed spirit leaves.

The speaker then says, “I am uneducated and incapable of eloquent words.” Instances such as these reaffirm the Scriptural word concerning a person, “For as he thinks in his heart, so is he.”[1] If a person believes that they cannot be a public speaker without study or without an outside influence, the body responds to this attitude and the tongue is tied.

Mind is not necessarily dependent on the education process. Mind possesses of itself all eloquence, beauty, and poetry. Mind has the power to express prose. Spirit, God, is heard when the human mind’s noise is silent. We are all capable of more than we do. The action of Soul confers the freedom that explains excellent impromptu speeches, admirable movie scripts, or meaningful texts.

John 14: 23-24

Jesus replied, “Anyone who loves me will obey my teaching. My Father will love them, and we will come to them and make our home with them. 24 Anyone who does not love me will not obey my teaching. These words you hear are not my own; they belong to the Father who sent me.

From 21st Century Science and Health

Mind produces all action.

Divine Mind is our Soul and gives us unending dominion to image forth good.

bible study imageSubject: Desire

Desire is multifaceted. Many layered. We can have good desires or bad desires.

Because many of us don’t know what good or bad desires are, economists, scientists, religionists, and psychologists have analyzed and theorized desire.

From the Stanford Encyclopedia of Philosophy website at https://plato.stanford.edu/entries/desire/ we read, “To desire is to be in a particular state of mind. It is a state of mind familiar to everyone who has ever wanted to drink water or desired to know what has happened to an old friend, but its familiarity does not make it easy to give a theory of desire…

“Understanding desires requires at least two things: first, to have a theory of desire itself, and second, to have some familiarity with the varieties of desires that there are. Once acquired, an understanding of desire can illuminate a number of controversies surrounding desire.”

Six theories of desire were given: action-based, pleasure-based, good-based, attention-based, learning-based, and holistic.

Thing is: this informative study was kind of laborious because desire was scrutinized.

A Bible verse came to my mind.

Please read from you Bible, Ecclesiastes 1:8

Basically, human knowledge can be overwhelming, undesirable. We can however understand a desire that comes from something greater than human knowledge or biology.

This desire that comes from something greater, let’s call it divine Mind, is free and gives us the freedom to break away from confusion or negative desires.

Even the desire to hurt oneself can be troubling. A thread was found at Anxiety Community website that shows caring responses regarding hurting oneself.

https://www.anxietycommunity.com/index.php?threads/the-desire-to-hurt-yourself.826/

“Azelma posted: I know it’s wrong and no one should ever do it for any reason, but I just get this feeling that I must punish myself. It somehow makes me feel better, transforming the mental pain into a physical form that’s easier to concentrate on. Or something, I don’t know. I was just wondering if there are any others like me and how you guys deal with it.

“Alex posted: Self-harming is a very delicate topic and very hard to explain to people who have never experienced it. It can happen not just to ‘punish’ yourself, but also to take away that inner pain that is invisible and you don’t know how else to deal with. Often it’s subconscious too and I recall talking to my brother once and I was ‘hurting’ myself and he told me to stop, but I didn’t even know I was doing it at the time as it had become a habit. When it occurs out of habit, you don’t always notice the action or pain.

“Happy Kid posted: One therapist helped me make a safety plan, and that helps with the difficult times. It’s good to have something like that in place, including people you can call or text.”

The advice given to Azelma was helpful, however sometimes we humans need greater examples of freedom. This is where God can help. Or the examples of prophets or Christ Jesus.

Please read in you Bible I John 2.

Now, desire is also associated with economics and business.

T.J. Cook, Executive Director at ABQid in New Mexico, spoke on TEDx, about how to go from desire to discipline, with innovation, https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=a_pHGbL5138

Cook mentioned the importance of creating space for innovation, rather than trying to dictate it. He spoke of creating a culture of innovation in the workplace, and gave three steps that can be taken:

  1. Drawing board day, where new ideas are brought up, but not related to client’s projects.
  2. Lab day, where those ideas are implemented into prototypes.
  3. Show and Tell day, demonstrating new prototypes.

Desires become un-suppressed through innovation. Desires from God come with satisfaction.

From 21st Century Science and Health, 6th edition

Our desires and aspirations ache to be fulfilled and we only feel rewarded when we stop limiting infinite Mind to finite resources. Infinite Mind can’t lose its character as inexhaustible Love, eternal Life, omnipotent Truth.

It is easier to desire Truth than it is to stop our dead end thinking and habits. Human beings may seek the understanding of divine Science, but they will not be able to profit from Christian Science without applying the spiritual facts in their daily life. This endeavor consists of forsaking error of every kind and possessing no other consciousness but good.

When we feel the loss of human peace, the desire for spiritual joy gets stronger. This desire for heavenly good comes even before we discover what belongs to wisdom and Love. The loss of earthly hopes and pleasures brightens the spiritual path. Pain in the body informs us that pleasure in the body is mortal, compelling us to discover spiritual joy.

Unspoken thoughts are not unknown to divine Mind. Prayer is desire. No loss can come from trusting God to form and exalt our desires before they are put into words and action.

The prayer that reforms and heals is an absolute faith that all things good are made possible by God. This type of prayer includes spiritual understanding and unselfish love. Speaking from experience, God has given us the tools of humility, meditation, awareness, and action, to attain improved spirituality and health.

What is the intent of prayer? Do we meditate to improve ourselves or improve humanity and the world? Do we enlighten God? Do we pray so other people can hear us? Is prayer beneficial? Yes, our hunger for righteousness[1] is blessed by our heavenly Parent. The desire for spirituality does not return to us void.

God’s work is done. Prayer doesn’t motivate God to do what has already been done. The Infinite can do nothing less than give all goodness since God is absolute good, wisdom, and Love—the all-knowing Mind. God’s manifestation doesn’t appear simply on the ground of lip-service; however, modest fervent affirmations of God’s presence can kick-start prayer.

Prayer can be dangerous if it tempts us to voice desires that aren’t real or to assume we are more spiritual than we really are. We become involuntary hypocrites when we use prayer to console ourselves without making genuine efforts to break out of illusory mindsets.

Meditation can’t change God’s law, but it can bring us into sync with immortal being. Prayer is not the mere habit of trying to persuade the divine Mind, as we would try to persuade a human being. Methods of prayer that perpetually try to humanize God are sad mistakes—errors that impede spiritual growth. As a first step, we can ask God to deliver us, but by taking more steps, and by demonstrating spiritual goodness, we can reach the living Truth.

God is Love. Can we ask the Infinite to be more? Love is intelligence, Mind. So, what could we possibly tell the all-knowing infinite Mind?

The effective prayer is a fervent desire for growth in grace, expressed in patience, humility, love, and good deeds. To keep the commandments of our teacher Christ Jesus and follow his example, is our proper debt and the only worthy evidence of our gratitude. Jesus said: “If you love me, you will obey what I command.”[2]

Love’s discipline is nourishing. As Love corrects us we advance toward justice, peace, and purity, which are the milestones of Science.

Spiritual and omnipotent Mind lifts humanity above itself into purer desires, even into spiritual power and good-will to humankind.

Golden text: Matthew 12: 11-12*

[Jesus] said to them, “Which one of you who has a sheep, if it falls into a pit on the Sabbath, will not take hold of it and lift it out? 12 Of how much more value is a man than a sheep! So it is lawful to do good on the Sabbath.”

Deuteronomy 5:1, 12-15

And Moses summoned all Israel and said to them, “Hear, O Israel, the statutes and the rules that I speak in your hearing today, and you shall learn them and be careful to do them.

12 “‘Observe the Sabbath day, to keep it holy, as the Lord your God commanded you. 13 Six days you shall labor and do all your work, 14 but the seventh day is a Sabbath to the Lord your God. On it you shall not do any work, you or your son or your daughter or your male servant or your female servant, or your ox or your donkey or any of your livestock, or the sojourner who is within your gates, that your male servant and your female servant may rest as well as you. 15 You shall remember that you were a slave in the land of Egypt, and the Lord your God brought you out from there with a mighty hand and an outstretched arm. Therefore the Lord your God commanded you to keep the Sabbath day.

II Corinthians 3: 1-6

Are we beginning to commend ourselves again? Or do we need, as some do, letters of recommendation to you, or from you? You yourselves are our letter of recommendation, written on our hearts, to be known and read by all. And you show that you are a letter from Christ delivered by us, written not with ink but with the Spirit of the living God, not on tablets of stone but on tablets of human hearts.

Such is the confidence that we have through Christ toward God. Not that we are sufficient in ourselves to claim anything as coming from us, but our sufficiency is from God, who has made us sufficient to be ministers of a new covenant, not of the letter but of the Spirit. For the letter kills, but the Spirit gives life.

From 21st Century Science and Health**

Through divine Science, Spirit, God, unites understanding to eternal harmony. The calm and enlightened thought, or spiritual perception, is at peace. Thus the dawn of ideas goes on, forming each successive stage of progress.

John 5: 1-10

After this there was a feast of the Jews, and Jesus went up to Jerusalem.

Now there is in Jerusalem by the Sheep Gate a pool, in Aramaic called Bethesda, which has five roofed colonnades. In these lay a multitude of invalids—blind, lame, and paralyzed. One man was there who had been an invalid for thirty-eight years. When Jesus saw him lying there and knew that he had already been there a long time, he said to him, “Do you want to be healed?” The sick man answered him, “Sir, I have no one to put me into the pool when the water is stirred up, and while I am going another steps down before me.” Jesus said to him, “Get up, take up your bed, and walk.” And at once the man was healed, and he took up his bed and walked.

Now that day was the Sabbath. 10 So the Jews said to the man who had been healed, “It is the Sabbath, and it is not lawful for you to take up your bed.”

From 21st Century Science and Health

The healing influence of Spirit is discerned by spiritual sense. Creeds, doctrines, and human hypotheses do not express Christian Science; much less can they demonstrate it.

Every law of physics or the body, supposed to govern people, is rendered null and void by the law of Life, God. Unaware of our God-given rights, we allow unjust decisions and make excuses for imperfection. Our education system is biased, expounding homogeny and marketing a resignation to poor choices. Become aware metaphysically. Be no more willing to suffer the illusion that you are sick or that some disease is developing in the system, than you are willing to suffer giving into a sinful temptation on the ground that sin has its necessities.

The systems of human philosophies, doctrines, and medicines are more or less infected with the thinking that matter has a life-code of its own—genes—but this thinking contradicts both revelation and right reasoning. Why would matter want a life with no mind? Logical and scientific conclusions are reached only through the knowledge that there are not two bases of being, matter and mind, but one alone—Mind.

When overstepping some supposed law, you say that there is danger. This fear is the danger and induces the physical effects. We cannot in reality suffer from breaking anything except a moral or spiritual law. The supposed laws of mortal thinking are destroyed by the understanding that the law of Soul is immortal, and that human mind cannot legislate the times, periods, and types of disease with which humans die. God is the lawmaker, but God is not the author of ruthless rules. In infinite Life and Love there is no sickness, no twisted good, no death, and Scriptures declare that in the infinite God “we live and move and have our being.”[1]

John 5: 11-17

But [the healed man] answered them, “The man who healed me, that man said to me, ‘Take up your bed, and walk.’” 12 They asked him, “Who is the man who said to you, ‘Take up your bed and walk’?” 13 Now the man who had been healed did not know who it was, for Jesus had withdrawn, as there was a crowd in the place. 14 Afterward Jesus found him in the temple and said to him, “See, you are well! Sin no more, that nothing worse may happen to you.” 15 The man went away and told the Jews that it was Jesus who had healed him. 16 And this was why the Jews were persecuting Jesus, because he was doing these things on the Sabbath. 17 But Jesus answered them, “My Father is working until now, and I am working.”

From 21st Century Science and Health

Evil is struggling against the advancing spiritual era. The world may lack spirituality, and people may not be able to keep a promise or make a home happy, but human minds are demanding spiritual understanding and a reformed attitude.

Matthew 12: 1-8

At that time Jesus went through the grainfields on the Sabbath. His disciples were hungry, and they began to pluck heads of grain and to eat. But when the Pharisees saw it, they said to him, “Look, your disciples are doing what is not lawful to do on the Sabbath.” He said to them, “Have you not read what David did when he was hungry, and those who were with him: how he entered the house of God and ate the bread of the Presence, which it was not lawful for him to eat nor for those who were with him, but only for the priests? Or have you not read in the Law how on the Sabbath the priests in the temple profane the Sabbath and are guiltless? I tell you, something greater than the temple is here. And if you had known what this means, ‘I desire mercy, and not sacrifice,’ you would not have condemned the guiltless. For the Son of Man is lord of the Sabbath.”

From 21st Century Science and Health

Truth and error seem to be in conflict. Remember though, the contention is only the mental conflict between the evidence of the spiritual perceptions and the testimony of the human imprints. Through faith in, and the understanding of divine Love, the battle between Spirit and flesh will settle all questions.

Superstition and understanding can never unite. When the final physical and moral effects of divine Science are fully understood, the conflict between truth and error, understanding and belief, Science and material sense, will cease, and spiritual harmony will prevail. This harmony was predicted by the prophets and introduced by Jesus. The lightning and thunderbolts of error burst and flash, but the clouds will clear and the tumult will die away in the distance. Then the raindrops of divinity refresh the earth. As St. Paul says: “There remains, then, a Sabbath-rest for the people of God [of Spirit].”[2]

Hebrews 4: 9-12

So then, there remains a Sabbath rest for the people of God, 10 for whoever has entered God’s rest has also rested from his works as God did from his.

11 Let us therefore strive to enter that rest, so that no one may fall by the same sort of disobedience. 12 For the word of God is living and active, sharper than any two-edged sword, piercing to the division of soul and of spirit, of joints and of marrow, and discerning the thoughts and intentions of the heart.

From 21st Century Science and Health

There is neither place nor opportunity in Science for error of any sort. Every day makes its demands upon us for better proofs rather than verbal claims of Christian power. These proofs consist solely in the destruction of sin, sickness, and death by the power of Spirit, as Jesus destroyed them. This is an element of progress and progress is the law of God whose law demands of us only what we can certainly fulfill.

Save yourself as Jesus saved. Strive. Advance spiritually. Constantly turn away from the objects of the human mind, and look toward the imperishable things of Spirit. If honest, you will be in earnest from the start, and joyfully gain a little each day in the right direction. If persistent, you will make the transition from limited substance to the substantial unlimited.

Every day on earth we must improve, discover, and utilize our spiritual faculties.

Not materially, but spiritually we know God as divine Mind, as Life, Truth, and Love. We become more respectful and caring as we get to know the divine nature better and love Soul understandingly. The struggle over physicality will be replaced by a rejoicing in the affluence of our God.

bible study imageSubject: One Spirit

Golden text: I Corinthians 12:13

For in one Spirit we were all baptized into one body—Jews or Greeks, slaves or free—and all were made to drink of one Spirit.

Numbers 11:16-30

Then the Lord said to Moses, “Gather for me seventy men of the elders of Israel, whom you know to be the elders of the people and officers over them, and bring them to the tent of meeting, and let them take their stand there with you. 17 And I will come down and talk with you there. And I will take some of the Spirit that is on you and put it on them, and they shall bear the burden of the people with you, so that you may not bear it yourself alone. 18 And say to the people, ‘Consecrate yourselves for tomorrow, and you shall eat meat, for you have wept in the hearing of the Lord, saying, “Who will give us meat to eat? For it was better for us in Egypt.” Therefore the Lord will give you meat, and you shall eat. 19 You shall not eat just one day, or two days, or five days, or ten days, or twenty days, 20 but a whole month, until it comes out at your nostrils and becomes loathsome to you, because you have rejected the Lord who is among you and have wept before him, saying, “Why did we come out of Egypt?”’” 21 But Moses said, “The people among whom I am number six hundred thousand on foot, and you have said, ‘I will give them meat, that they may eat a whole month!’ 22 Shall flocks and herds be slaughtered for them, and be enough for them? Or shall all the fish of the sea be gathered together for them, and be enough for them?” 23 And the Lord said to Moses, “Is the Lord’s hand shortened? Now you shall see whether my word will come true for you or not.”

24 So Moses went out and told the people the words of the Lord. And he gathered seventy men of the elders of the people and placed them around the tent. 25 Then the Lord came down in the cloud and spoke to him, and took some of the Spirit that was on him and put it on the seventy elders. And as soon as the Spirit rested on them, they prophesied. But they did not continue doing it.

26 Now two men remained in the camp, one named Eldad, and the other named Medad, and the Spirit rested on them. They were among those registered, but they had not gone out to the tent, and so they prophesied in the camp. 27 And a young man ran and told Moses, “Eldad and Medad are prophesying in the camp.” 28 And Joshua the son of Nun, the assistant of Moses from his youth, said, “My lord Moses, stop them.” 29 But Moses said to him, “Are you jealous for my sake? Would that all the Lord’s people were prophets, that the Lord would put his Spirit on them!” 30 And Moses and the elders of Israel returned to the camp.

From 21st Century Science and Health

As we become better acquainted with the Science of being, we are better able to communicate with the divine Mind. Spiritual knowledge not only allows people to foresee and foretell events which concern the universal welfare, but it also inspires people divinely to reach the dimension of unfettered Mind, Spirit.

The ancient prophets received their foresight from a spiritual, metaphysical position, not by predicting evil and mistaking fiction as fact. Reading the future from the premise of fleshly and human belief is not scientific foresight. When sufficiently advanced in Science to be in agreement with the truth of being, people become seers and prophets involuntarily. Prophecy is not controlled by spirits, demons, or quantum entities, but by the one Spirit. It is the prerogative of the ever-present divine Mind, and of thought which is in alignment with this Mind, to know the past, the present, and the future.

Mark 1:21-27

And they went into Capernaum, and immediately on the Sabbath [Jesus] entered the synagogue and was teaching. 22 And they were astonished at his teaching, for he taught them as one who had authority, and not as the scribes. 23 And immediately there was in their synagogue a man with an unclean spirit. And he cried out, 24 “What have you to do with us, Jesus of Nazareth? Have you come to destroy us? I know who you are—the Holy One of God.” 25 But Jesus rebuked him, saying, “Be silent, and come out of him!” 26 And the unclean spirit, convulsing him and crying out with a loud voice, came out of him. 27 And they were all amazed, so that they questioned among themselves, saying, “What is this? A new teaching with authority! He commands even the unclean spirits, and they obey him.”

From 21st Century Science and Health

There is but one Spirit. We are never God. Our spirituality is made in the likeness of Spirit. We reflect God. In this scientific reflection, the Ego and the divine Parent are inseparable. The assumptions that human egos are spirits, or that there are good and bad spirits, are mistakes.

Jesus cast out evil spirits, or false beliefs. He did his own work by the one Spirit. Jesus said: “My Father has worked [even] until now, [He has never ceased working; He is still working] and I, too, must be at [divine] work.”[1] The Master never described disease, as far as can be learned from the Gospels, but he healed disease.

Spirit being God, there is but one Spirit, for there can be but one infinite and therefore one God. There are neither spirits many nor gods many. There is no evil in Spirit, because God is Spirit. The theory that Spirit must pass through a human being to be individualized would reduce God to dependency on matter and establish a basis for pantheism.

Luke 4: 14-21

And Jesus returned in the power of the Spirit to Galilee, and a report about him went out through all the surrounding country. 15 And he taught in their synagogues, being glorified by all.

16 And he came to Nazareth, where he had been brought up. And as was his custom, he went to the synagogue on the Sabbath day, and he stood up to read. 17 And the scroll of the prophet Isaiah was given to him. He unrolled the scroll and found the place where it was written,

18 “The Spirit of the Lord is upon me,
because he has anointed me
to proclaim good news to the poor.
He has sent me to proclaim liberty to the captives
and recovering of sight to the blind,
to set at liberty those who are oppressed,
19 to proclaim the year of the Lord’s favor.”

20 And he rolled up the scroll and gave it back to the attendant and sat down. And the eyes of all in the synagogue were fixed on him. 21 And he began to say to them, “Today this Scripture has been fulfilled in your hearing.”

From 21st Century Science and Health

Jesus taught but one God, one Spirit, who makes spiritual being in the image and likeness of Love, of Mind—not in the likeness of human mind.

There is only one spiritual existence, the Life of which physical senses can’t grasp. Divine Principle speaks through spiritual sense. If a material body—in other words, a mental embodiment of mortality and materialism—were permeated by Spirit, that body would disappear to fleshly sense, would be deathless. A condition precedent to communion with Spirit is the gain of spiritual life.

I Peter 1:1-12

Peter, an apostle of Jesus Christ,

To those who are elect exiles of the Dispersion in Pontus, Galatia, Cappadocia, Asia, and Bithynia, according to the foreknowledge of God the Father, in the sanctification of the Spirit, for obedience to Jesus Christ and for sprinkling with his blood:

May grace and peace be multiplied to you.

Blessed be the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ! According to his great mercy, he has caused us to be born again to a living hope through the resurrection of Jesus Christ from the dead, to an inheritance that is imperishable, undefiled, and unfading, kept in heaven for you, who by God’s power are being guarded through faith for a salvation ready to be revealed in the last time. In this you rejoice, though now for a little while, if necessary, you have been grieved by various trials, so that the tested genuineness of your faith—more precious than gold that perishes though it is tested by fire—may be found to result in praise and glory and honor at the revelation of Jesus Christ. Though you have not seen him, you love him. Though you do not now see him, you believe in him and rejoice with joy that is inexpressible and filled with glory, obtaining the outcome of your faith, the salvation of your souls.

10 Concerning this salvation, the prophets who prophesied about the grace that was to be yours searched and inquired carefully, 11 inquiring what person or time the Spirit of Christ in them was indicating when he predicted the sufferings of Christ and the subsequent glories. 12 It was revealed to them that they were serving not themselves but you, in the things that have now been announced to you through those who preached the good news to you by the Holy Spirit sent from heaven, things into which angels long to look.

In divine Science, person is the true image of God. The divine nature was skillfully personified by Christ Jesus, who shed light on a powerful concept of God. He shifted the people’s thought to experience something better than what they had been trained to think was normal. Jesus served to remove the stereotypical view of people as sinners, destined to be sick and dying.

Heaven. Harmony; the rule of one Spirit; government by divine Principle; spirituality; happiness; the atmosphere of Soul.

When the divine precepts are understood, they reveal cooperation between creatures, because we all have one Spirit, God, one intelligent source, compatible to the Scriptural command: “Your attitude should be the same as that of Christ Jesus.”[2] We, and our Maker have a reciprocal relationship in divine Science, and real consciousness is cognizant only of the things of God

God is the one and only Spirit, never trapped in the flesh. We are images of Spirit.

Golden text: Psalm 103: 15-17*

As for man, his days are like grass; he flourishes like a flower of the field; 16 for the wind passes over it, and it is gone, and its place knows it no more. 17 But the steadfast love of the Lord is from everlasting to everlasting on those who fear him, and his righteousness to children’s children,

Matthew 20: 17-22

17 And as Jesus was going up to Jerusalem, he took the twelve disciples aside, and on the way he said to them, 18 “See, we are going up to Jerusalem. And the Son of Man will be delivered over to the chief priests and scribes, and they will condemn him to death 19 and deliver him over to the Gentiles to be mocked and flogged and crucified, and he will be raised on the third day.”

20 Then the mother of the sons of Zebedee came up to him with her sons, and kneeling before him she asked him for something. 21 And he said to her, “What do you want?” She said to him, “Say that these two sons of mine are to sit, one at your right hand and one at your left, in your kingdom.” 22 Jesus answered, “You do not know what you are asking. Are you able to drink the cup that I am to drink?”

Prayer can be dangerous if it tempts us to voice desires that aren’t real or to assume we are more spiritual than we really are.

I advise students to be charitable and kind, not only toward differing forms of religion and medicine, but to the very people who hold these differing opinions. Let us be faithful in pointing the way through Christ, as we understand it, but let us also be careful always to “stop judging by mere appearances, and make a right judgment.”[1] Never condemn rashly. “If anyone strikes you on the right cheek, turn the other also,”[2] because if you refrain from retaliation, you will be struck again.

Bear in mind, people who adopt New Age techniques, mysticism, or hypnotism, may be more spiritual than individuals who shun or avoid their practices. Therefore, my contest is not with those practitioners, but with the false systems. I love humanity, and will continue to labor and to endure.

The time for the reappearing of the divine healing is throughout all time. Leaving all our earthly things at the altar of divine Science, we will drink from Truth’s cup and be provided with the spirit and power of scientific Mind-healing.

Obeying his priceless precepts—following his demonstration so far as we understand it—we drink of his cup, share his bread, and are baptized with his purity until at last we can rest and sit down with Christ in a full understanding of divine Principle, which triumphs over death.

Matthew 27:35

And when they had crucified him, they divided his garments among them by casting lots.

Luke 23: 44-49

44 It was now about the sixth hour, and there was darkness over the whole land until the ninth hour, 45 while the sun’s light failed. And the curtain of the temple was torn in two. 46 Then Jesus, calling out with a loud voice, said, “Father, into your hands I commit my spirit!” And having said this he breathed his last. 47 Now when the centurion saw what had taken place, he praised God, saying, “Certainly this man was innocent!” 48 And all the crowds that had assembled for this spectacle, when they saw what had taken place, returned home beating their breasts. 49 And all his acquaintances and the women who had followed him from Galilee stood at a distance watching these things.

From 21st Century Science and Health

As light destroys darkness and in the place of darkness all is light, so in absolute Science, Soul, or God, destroys mortality and in the place of mortality all is immortality. We are sometimes led to believe that darkness is as real as light. Science affirms darkness to be only a human sense of the absence of light. Darkness loses the appearance of reality in the presence of light. So sin and sorrow, disease and death are the supposed absence of Life, God, and vanish before truth and love.

With its divine proof, Science reverses the evidence of limited sense. Every quality and condition of mortality is swallowed up in spirituality. Mortals are the opposite of immortals in origin, in existence, and in their relation to God.

Luke 24: 1-7

But on the first day of the week, at early dawn, they went to the tomb, taking the spices they had prepared. And they found the stone rolled away from the tomb, but when they went in they did not find the body of the Lord Jesus. While they were perplexed about this, behold, two men stood by them in dazzling apparel. And as they were frightened and bowed their faces to the ground, the men said to them, “Why do you seek the living among the dead? He is not here, but has risen. Remember how he told you, while he was still in Galilee, that the Son of Man must be delivered into the hands of sinful men and be crucified and on the third day rise.”

From 21st Century Science and Health

We are outgrowing the pedantic theology that regards Jesus’ crucifixion as an immediate pardon for all sinners who ask for it. Divine Science shows we are responsible for ourselves and can follow Jesus’ example of goodness. Divine Science also shows that Jesus’ death wasn’t meant to prove spirits can go in and out of bodies to return to earth. We are images of Spirit, unseen by flesh.

The crucifixion was effective because of the practical tendencies and goodness it demonstrated for humanity.

The fear and negativity which possess us at the instant of death do not cease but endure until the death of the fearful and negative thoughts.

The body is as materialistic as the mind and vice versa. To be wholly spiritual, we must be Godlike and we become that way only when we reach spiritual purity.

Jesus taught the way of Life by demonstration so we may understand how this Principle heals the sick, drives out mistaken mindsets, and triumphs over loss. Jesus presented the ideal of God better than any person whose origin was less spiritual. By his obedience to God, Jesus demonstrated the Principle of being

Luke 24: 13-31

13 That very day two of them were going to a village named Emmaus, about seven miles from Jerusalem, 14 and they were talking with each other about all these things that had happened. 15 While they were talking and discussing together, Jesus himself drew near and went with them. 16 But their eyes were kept from recognizing him. 17 And he said to them, “What is this conversation that you are holding with each other as you walk?” And they stood still, looking sad. 18 Then one of them, named Cleopas, answered him, “Are you the only visitor to Jerusalem who does not know the things that have happened there in these days?” 19 And he said to them, “What things?” And they said to him, “Concerning Jesus of Nazareth, a man who was a prophet mighty in deed and word before God and all the people, 20 and how our chief priests and rulers delivered him up to be condemned to death, and crucified him. 21 But we had hoped that he was the one to redeem Israel. Yes, and besides all this, it is now the third day since these things happened. 22 Moreover, some women of our company amazed us. They were at the tomb early in the morning, 23 and when they did not find his body, they came back saying that they had even seen a vision of angels, who said that he was alive. 24 Some of those who were with us went to the tomb and found it just as the women had said, but him they did not see.” 25 And he said to them, “O foolish ones, and slow of heart to believe all that the prophets have spoken! 26 Was it not necessary that the Christ should suffer these things and enter into his glory?” 27 And beginning with Moses and all the Prophets, he interpreted to them in all the Scriptures the things concerning himself.

28 So they drew near to the village to which they were going. He acted as if he were going farther, 29 but they urged him strongly, saying, “Stay with us, for it is toward evening and the day is now far spent.” So he went in to stay with them. 30 When he was at table with them, he took the bread and blessed and broke it and gave it to them. 31 And their eyes were opened, and they recognized him. And he vanished from their sight.

From 21st Century Science and Health

The people who first saw Jesus after the resurrection observed the final proof of his teachings, but misinterpreted the event.

On the road to Emmaus,[3] it was Jesus’ spiritual interpretation of Scripture and the breaking of bread that made him known to his friends. The divine Spirit which identified Jesus centuries ago, has spoken through the inspired Word and will speak through it in every generation and milieu. Spirit is revealed to the receptive heart and is again seen driving out evil and healing the sick.

Truth will be to us “the resurrection and the life”[4] only as it destroys all error. Truth dissolves the belief that Mind, the only source of our spirituality, can be shackled by a body. Life can’t be controlled by death. A nihilistic, sick, or dying human is not the likeness of God, the perfect and eternal.

The resurrection indicates that mortal mindsets die, while spiritual mindsets live; it indicates full evidence of immortal being and metaphysical science, evidence so important to mortals. The belief that we have an existence or mind separate from God is a dying error—met and corrected by Jesus. Because God bestowed glory on the anointed Jesus, temptation, sin, sickness, and death did not terrorize him. Let people think they had killed the body! Afterward, he would show it again as unchanged. This demonstrates that in Christian Science the true individual is governed by God, by good, not evil, and is immortal, not mortal. Jesus taught the Science of this proof. He enabled his disciples to test his mysterious saying, “Anyone who has faith in me will do what I have been doing.”[5]

The resurrection advances individual and collective consciousness. It moves thought out of spiritual dullness and blind belief into the perception of infinite possibilities.

Golden text: Psalms 103:6*

The Lord works righteousness and justice for all who are oppressed.

Luke 11: 1-4, 37-42

Now Jesus was praying in a certain place, and when he finished, one of his disciples said to him, “Lord, teach us to pray, as John taught his disciples.” And he said to them, “When you pray, say:

“Father, hallowed be your name.
Your kingdom come.
Give us each day our daily bread,
and forgive us our sins,
for we ourselves forgive everyone who is indebted to us.
And lead us not into temptation.”

37 While Jesus was speaking, a Pharisee asked him to dine with him, so he went in and reclined at table. 38 The Pharisee was astonished to see that he did not first wash before dinner. 39 And the Lord said to him, “Now you Pharisees cleanse the outside of the cup and of the dish, but inside you are full of greed and wickedness. 40 You fools! Did not he who made the outside make the inside also? 41 But give as alms those things that are within, and behold, everything is clean for you.

42 “But woe to you Pharisees! For you tithe mint and rue and every herb, and neglect justice and the love of God. These you ought to have done, without neglecting the others.

21st Century Science and Health**

On an individual and collective mission, Jesus’ lifework was done in justice to himself and in mercy to humanity. Jesus gave an excellent example of reconciliation, however, he did not do our work for us. Jesus showed us how to be responsible for our own thoughts and actions. He acted boldly, not only against the self-authorized evidence of human perceptions, but also Pharisaical dogma and practices. With healing power, Jesus proved the powerlessness of all that opposed goodness.

Luke 18: 1-8

And [Jesus] told them a parable to the effect that they ought always to pray and not lose heart. He said, “In a certain city there was a judge who neither feared God nor respected man. And there was a widow in that city who kept coming to him and saying, ‘Give me justice against my adversary.’ For a while he refused, but afterward he said to himself, ‘Though I neither fear God nor respect man, yet because this widow keeps bothering me, I will give her justice, so that she will not beat me down by her continual coming.’” And the Lord said, “Hear what the unrighteous judge says. And will not God give justice to his elect, who cry to him day and night? Will he delay long over them? I tell you, he will give justice to them speedily. Nevertheless, when the Son of Man comes, will he find faith on earth?”

We should relieve our minds from the depressing thought that we have violated a human law and must of necessity pay the penalty. Let us reassure ourselves with the law of Love. God never punishes us for doing right. Love never penalizes us for honest labor or deeds of kindness, even if we are exposed to fatigue, cold, heat, contagion. If we seem to incur the penalty through matter, this is but the false-ego, or human mind’s thinking. Unfair repercussions are not established by wisdom, and our nonconformity to injustice can nullify the penalty. Through this action of thought and its results upon the body, students will prove to themselves, by small beginnings, the grand verities of divine Science.

We are sustained under all circumstances as we have faith in the divine Principle of health and as we spiritually understand God. The ordinary appeal to have faith in the world’s ways and means must yield to faith in the all-might of infinite Spirit.

Jeremiah 4: 1-4

“If you return, O Israel,
declares the Lord,
to me you should return.
If you remove your detestable things from my presence,
and do not waver,
and if you swear, ‘As the Lord lives,’
in truth, in justice, and in righteousness,
then nations shall bless themselves in him,
and in him shall they glory.”

For thus says the Lord to the men of Judah and Jerusalem:

“Break up your fallow ground,
and sow not among thorns.
Circumcise yourselves to the Lord;
remove the foreskin of your hearts,
O men of Judah and inhabitants of Jerusalem;
lest my wrath go forth like fire,
and burn with none to quench it,
because of the evil of your deeds.”

Jeremiah 9:23-24

23 Thus says the Lord: “Let not the wise man boast in his wisdom, let not the mighty man boast in his might, let not the rich man boast in his riches, 24 but let him who boasts boast in this, that he understands and knows me, that I am the Lord who practices steadfast love, justice, and righteousness in the earth. For in these things I delight, declares the Lord.”

21st Century Science and Health

Finite beliefs can’t do justice to Truth in any direction. It limits all things and would compress infinite Mind into a skull bone. Such belief can’t understand or worship the infinite. The effort to accommodate beginnings and endings tries to break up Soul and substance. It tries to divide the one Spirit into persons and souls.

Justice requires reformation.

Our laws will eventually take cognizance of mental crime and no longer apply legal rulings entirely too physical offences. It will go down in history that how we think or what we think, directly or indirectly affects action, including the action of what we call physical bodies. The medical field is even somewhat recognizing the power of metaphysics. Dr. Dharma Singh Khalsa, M.D., a pioneer in integrative medicine, testifies that, “Meditation is a wondrously powerful medical modality…the meditation that I teach employs not just patients’ mental energies, but also their physical energies”[1]

Whoever uses their developed mental energies or powers to commit opportune atrocities is never safe. God will arrest those people. Divine justice will confine them. Their sins will be millstones about their necks, weighing them down to the depths of disgrace and death. The aggravation of error foretells its doom and confirms the ancient axiom: Whom the gods would destroy, they first make mad.

Conventional medicine advocates drugs, even harmful drugs, and is far from divine Science. Learning the dangers or the uselessness of intrusive medicine, humanity looks in new directions for healing. Humanity begins to understand the power of mind over matter and the importance of better thinking. Be aware: some thought influences can pretend to be good or in our best interest, but are just as dangerous as harmful drugs. This is mental malpractice and is criminal, working against common humanity, honesty, and justice. Divine Mind-practice requires human mind to yield to the divine consciousness and to unite with the spiritual thought moving heavenward.

Deuteronomy 16:17-20

17 Every man shall give as he is able, according to the blessing of the Lord your God that he has given you.

18 “You shall appoint judges and officers in all your towns that the Lord your God is giving you, according to your tribes, and they shall judge the people with righteous judgment. 19 You shall not pervert justice. You shall not show partiality, and you shall not accept a bribe, for a bribe blinds the eyes of the wise and subverts the cause of the righteous. 20 Justice, and only justice, you shall follow, that you may live and inherit the land that the Lord your God is giving you.

21st Century Science and Health

Civil laws are created to implement fairness and equity between the rights of the sexes but more progress is needed, to say the least. Civilization and Science stand strong on the side of justice and encourage the elimination of discrimination, however, every time an effort is made to remedy unfairness, we must be alert that the effort doesn’t encourage difficulties of greater magnitude. Higher aims and motives, as well as improved mental character, must be considered as the feasible and rational means of progress.

Global injustice between the sexes is a crying evil caused by the arrogance and inhumanity of mortals. We must exercise our faith in the direction taught by the Apostle James, when he said: “Religion that God and Father accepts as pure and faultless is this: to look after orphans and widows in their distress and to keep oneself from being polluted by the world.”[2]

Allow unselfishness, goodness, mercy, justice, health, holiness, and love to control your mind and body.

This is an era when we live and think in terms of science, therefore proof and demonstration, instead of opinion and dogma, are called upon to support spirituality, “making wise the simple.”[3]

The goodness we live is the nemesis of negative inclinations. Spirituality in action, demonstrates the government of God, good, in which is no power to act against life, truth, and love.

And we solemnly promise to be mindful, to pray for that Mind to be in us which was also in Christ Jesus; to do to others as we would have them do to us;[4] and to be merciful, just, and pure.

Golden text: Proverbs 3:7-8*

Be not wise in your own eyes; fear the Lord, and turn away from evil. It will be healing to your flesh and refreshment to your bones.

I Samuel 14:24-30

And the men of Israel had been hard pressed that day, so Saul had laid an oath on the people, saying, “Cursed be the man who eats food until it is evening and I am avenged on my enemies.” So none of the people had tasted food. 25 Now when all the people came to the forest, behold, there was honey on the ground. 26 And when the people entered the forest, behold, the honey was dropping, but no one put his hand to his mouth, for the people feared the oath. 27 But Jonathan had not heard his father charge the people with the oath, so he put out the tip of the staff that was in his hand and dipped it in the honeycomb and put his hand to his mouth, and his eyes became bright. 28 Then one of the people said, “Your father strictly charged the people with an oath, saying, ‘Cursed be the man who eats food this day.’” And the people were faint. 29 Then Jonathan said, “My father has troubled the land. See how my eyes have become bright because I tasted a little of this honey. 30 How much better if the people had eaten freely today of the spoil of their enemies that they found. For now the defeat among the Philistines has not been great.”

From 21st Century Science and Health**

When the curse of sickness or sin tempts you, cling steadfastly to God and Spirit’s idea.

Beliefs that engender a national theology or political religion are the antithesis of true Christianity. Narrow systems and theories concerning God, human beings, health, and a religious society, are restrictive.

A clergyman once adopted a diet of bread and water to increase his spirituality. Finding his health failing, he gave up his asceticism and advised others never to try dietetics for growth in grace.

The mistake of thinking that either fasting or feasting makes us better morally or physically is one of the fruits of “the tree of the knowledge of good and evil,” concerning which God said, “you must not eat from.”[1] Human mind forms all conditions of the human body and controls the organs, bones, genes, cells, blood, etc., as directly as the determination or will moves the hand.

I Samuel 14: 38-45

And Saul said, “Come here, all you leaders of the people, and know and see how this sin has arisen today. 39 For as the Lord lives who saves Israel, though it be in Jonathan my son, he shall surely die.” But there was not a man among all the people who answered him. 40 Then he said to all Israel, “You shall be on one side, and I and Jonathan my son will be on the other side.” And the people said to Saul, “Do what seems good to you.” 41 Therefore Saul said, “O Lord God of Israel, why have you not answered your servant this day? If this guilt is in me or in Jonathan my son, O Lord, God of Israel, give Urim. But if this guilt is in your people Israel, give Thummim.” And Jonathan and Saul were taken, but the people escaped. 42 Then Saul said, “Cast the lot between me and my son Jonathan.” And Jonathan was taken.

43 Then Saul said to Jonathan, “Tell me what you have done.” And Jonathan told him, “I tasted a little honey with the tip of the staff that was in my hand. Here I am; I will die.” 44 And Saul said, “God do so to me and more also; you shall surely die, Jonathan.” 45 Then the people said to Saul, “Shall Jonathan die, who has worked this great salvation in Israel? Far from it! As the Lord lives, there shall not one hair of his head fall to the ground, for he has worked with God this day.” So the people ransomed Jonathan, so that he did not die.

From 21st Century Science and Health

Let us then shape our views of existence into loveliness, renewal, and consistency, rather than into decrepitude and loss.

I knew a person who when quite a child adopted a whole wheat and vegetarian diet to cure indigestion. For many years, he ate only bread and vegetables, and drank nothing but water. His dyspepsia increasing, he decided that his diet should be more rigid. So, he ate only one meal every twenty-four hours, a meal consisting of only a thin slice of bread. His physician recommended that he should not moisten his parched throat until three hours after eating. The person passed many weary years in hunger and weakness, almost in starvation. The skill of the doctors was exhausted and they kindly informed him that death was indeed his only alternative, so he finally made up his mind to die. Then divine Science saved him, and perfect health was restored without a reminder of the old complaint.

This person learned that suffering and disease were the self-imposed beliefs of mortals, and not the facts of being. He recognized that God never decreed dis-ease—never ordained a law that fasting should be a means of health. Hence semi-starvation is not acceptable to wisdom, and it is equally far from Science, in which being is sustained by God, Mind. These truths opened the sufferer’s eyes, relieved his stomach, and he ate without suffering, “giving God thanks.” But, disciplined by self-denial and divine Science, he never enjoyed his food as he imagined he would back in the day when he was constantly hungry.

This new-born understanding that neither food nor the stomach, without the consent of human mind, can make us suffer, brings with it another lesson, that self-indulgence, gluttony, or bulimia, are sensual illusions and can’t give you satisfaction. This phantasm disappears as we better understand our spiritual existence and walk the line of a balanced life.

I Samuel 21:1-6

Then David came to Nob, to Ahimelech the priest. And Ahimelech came to meet David, trembling, and said to him, “Why are you alone, and no one with you?” And David said to Ahimelech the priest, “The king has charged me with a matter and said to me, ‘Let no one know anything of the matter about which I send you, and with which I have charged you.’ I have made an appointment with the young men for such and such a place. Now then, what do you have on hand? Give me five loaves of bread, or whatever is here.” And the priest answered David, “I have no common bread on hand, but there is holy bread—if the young men have kept themselves from women.” And David answered the priest, “Truly women have been kept from us as always when I go on an expedition. The vessels of the young men are holy even when it is an ordinary journey. How much more today will their vessels be holy?” So the priest gave him the holy bread, for there was no bread there but the bread of the Presence, which is removed from before the Lord, to be replaced by hot bread on the day it is taken away.

The commitment of thought to an honest achievement makes the achievement possible. Exceptions only confirm this rule, proving that failure is occasioned by a strong faith in failure.

If athletes believed it impossible to accomplish record-breaking feats, they could never do it. Their belief that they can achieve something spectacular gives their thought forces, called muscles, the flexibility and power which the unscientific might attribute to adrenaline or genes. Fear must disappear before the power of putting resolve into action can appear.

Mark 2:23-28

One Sabbath [Jesus] was going through the grainfields, and as they made their way, his disciples began to pluck heads of grain. 24 And the Pharisees were saying to him, “Look, why are they doing what is not lawful on the Sabbath?” 25 And he said to them, “Have you never read what David did, when he was in need and was hungry, he and those who were with him: 26 how he entered the house of God, in the time of Abiathar the high priest, and ate the bread of the Presence, which it is not lawful for any but the priests to eat, and also gave it to those who were with him?” 27 And he said to them, “The Sabbath was made for man, not man for the Sabbath. 28 So the Son of Man is lord even of the Sabbath.”

From 21st Century Science and Health

If human mind is kept active, must it pay a penalty by having a headache or becoming exhausted? Who dares to say that actual Mind can be overworked? When we reach our limits of mental endurance, we conclude that intellectual labor has been carried sufficiently far. On the other hand, when we realize that immortal Mind is ever active, we are able to rest in Truth. When we understand that our God-given spiritual energies and resources can’t wear out, or be trespassed upon by mortal laws, we are refreshed by the assurances of immortality, opposed to mortality.

Evidence of progress and of spiritualization can definitely be seen in the world. People are realizing the power of mind. We are learning to question drug systems and surgical procedures. Less obtrusive drugs, alternative health care treatments, responsible eating, consistent exercise, and homeopathy are being pursued. The substance of medicine is being transferred from matter to mind.

Proverbs 15: 28-33

28 The heart of the righteous ponders how to answer,
but the mouth of the wicked pours out evil things.
29 The Lord is far from the wicked,
but he hears the prayer of the righteous.
30 The light of the eyes rejoices the heart,
and good news refreshes the bones.
31 The ear that listens to life-giving reproof
will dwell among the wise.
32 Whoever ignores instruction despises himself,
but he who listens to reproof gains intelligence.
33 The fear of the Lord is instruction in wisdom,
and humility comes before honor.

From 21st Century Science and Health

Human beings should renew their energies and endeavors, and see the folly of hypocrisy while also learning the necessity of working out their own salvation.

Love never loses sight of loveliness. Its halo rests on its object. Isn’t it amazing that a friend is always beautiful?
