 Subject: Life

Golden text: Acts 20:24 NIV, copyright by Biblica

[Paul said,] “I consider my life worth nothing to me; my only aim is to finish the race and complete the task the Lord Jesus has given me—the task of testifying to the good news of God’s grace.”

Jonah 2:1, 5-7, 10

From inside the fish Jonah prayed to the Lord his God. He said:

The engulfing waters threatened me,
    the deep surrounded me;
    seaweed was wrapped around my head.
To the roots of the mountains I sank down;
    the earth beneath barred me in forever.
But you, Lord my God,
    brought my life up from the pit.

“When my life was ebbing away,
    I remembered you, Lord,
and my prayer rose to you,
    to your holy temple.

10 And the Lord commanded the fish, and it vomited Jonah onto dry land.

Temporal life is a false sense of being.

The effort to unlearn false perceptions includes forfeiting those views completely. Then error will be submissive to Truth. The divine method of becoming responsible for every thought and action involves unwinding our snarls and learning from experience how to divide between the human and the spiritual.

“The Lord disciplines those he loves.”[1] A person who refuses obedience to God is chastened by Love, and individuals who know and obey God will run up against the hostility of envy.

Luke 16:19-31

[Jesus said] “There was a rich man who was dressed in purple and fine linen and lived in luxury every day. 20 At his gate was laid a beggar named Lazarus, covered with sores 21 and longing to eat what fell from the rich man’s table. Even the dogs came and licked his sores.

22 “The time came when the beggar died and the angels carried him to Abraham’s side. The rich man also died and was buried. 23 In Hades, where he was in torment, he looked up and saw Abraham far away, with Lazarus by his side. 24 So he called to him, ‘Father Abraham, have pity on me and send Lazarus to dip the tip of his finger in water and cool my tongue, because I am in agony in this fire.’

25 “But Abraham replied, ‘Son, remember that in your lifetime you received your good things, while Lazarus received bad things, but now he is comforted here and you are in agony. 26 And besides all this, between us and you a great chasm has been set in place, so that those who want to go from here to you cannot, nor can anyone cross over from there to us.’

27 “He answered, ‘Then I beg you, father, send Lazarus to my family, 28 for I have five brothers. Let him warn them, so that they will not also come to this place of torment.’

29 “Abraham replied, ‘They have Moses and the Prophets; let them listen to them.’

30 “‘No, father Abraham,’ he said, ‘but if someone from the dead goes to them, they will repent.’

31 “He said to him, ‘If they do not listen to Moses and the Prophets, they will not be convinced even if someone rises from the dead.’”

21st Century Science and Health

It is contrary to divine Science to suppose that life is either physically or organically spiritual. Between divine Science and all forms of bio-spirituality or superstition, a great chasm is fixed, as impassable as the abyss between The Rich Man and Lazarus.[2]

Mechanical prayers or rituals are not progressive. Prayer is a privilege, not to be taken for granted or abused. Seeking Truth doesn’t include paying someone else to do your praying for you.

Who would hold a calculator in their hand and pray for the science of mathematics to solve a math problem? The rule is already established and it is our responsibility to work out the solution. Will we ask divine Principle to solve what has already been solved? The Science of being is intact. We can make our minds and bodies available to follow God’s rule. We can receive Love’s blessing and work out our own salvation.

Truth, independent of doctrines and time-honored systems, knocks at the portal of humanity. Contentment with the past and the cold conventionality of materialism are crumbling away. Ignorance of God is no longer the steppingstone to faith. The only guarantee of obedience is a right apprehension of Him whom to know aright is Life eternal. Though empires fall, “the Lord shall reign forever.”

Spiritual achievements open the door to a higher understanding of divine Life.

Psalms 30:4-5

Sing the praises of the Lord, you his faithful people;
    praise his holy name.
For his anger lasts only a moment,
    but his favor lasts a lifetime;
weeping may stay for the night,
    but rejoicing comes in the morning.

21st Century Science and Health

Too much is written on that which advocates pictures of mortal phases and helplessness. It is better to label people with the everlasting grandeur and immortality of improvement, spiritual power, and prestige.

The error of thinking that we are growing old, and the benefits of destroying that illusion, has noticeable results. Most of us have met someone considered old, but very much young in thought and action. Many are interviewed and questioned. Are they lucky? Is it their genes? Is it the food they eat? Maybe or maybe not, however, they usually always attribute their longevity to a positive and loving attitude. They have an awareness of good-will and ongoing life—not a life of stages and levels with beginnings and endings.

The mistake of thinking that we are growing old, and the benefits of destroying that illusion, make for a better life. Care-lined faces, wrinkles, and gray hair are not laws, while youthfulness and dignity are attributes of God.

Why not maintain a mental attitude of wanting to learn and grow?  Why not be conscious of unchanging divine Love rather than human love? Why not notice the manifestations of Spirit rather than the passing of years?

Spirituality, exempt from decline or decay, has a glory of its own—the radiance of Soul. We can be models of spiritual sense. Our spirituality is designed by complete Mind and reflects those higher conceptions of loveliness which transcend all false conceptions.

Cosmetic surgery, Botox, and tattoos are inadequate substitutes for the attractiveness of spirituality. Our spiritual nature is stunning and ongoing. It outperforms the aging process.

Good looks and poise are independent of physique. Being possesses its qualities before they are perceived humanly. Beauty is a thing of life. It dwells forever in the eternal Mind and reflects the living God in expression, form, outline, and color. It is Love which paints the petal with countless hues. It is Love that pours in warm sunbeams, arches the cloud with the bow of beauty, blazons the night with starry gems, and covers the earth with loveliness.

We approach spiritual Life and its demonstration through purity.

To achieve divine Science and its harmony, it pays to regard life more metaphysically.

“The materials we need to reach a new level of discourse are in our grasp; we have only to abandon outmoded approaches/disciplines to achieve an enlightening beginning for a new science.” From The Anthropology of Medicine: From Culture to Method, Third Edition.[3]

Life is real, and death is the deception. A demonstration of the facts of Soul in Jesus’ way resolves the dark visions of mindless sense into harmony and spirituality. Our privilege at this moment is to prove the words of Jesus: “If you practice what I’m telling you, you’ll never have to look death in the face.”[4] To separate thought from false trusts and delusive evidence in order that the spiritual facts of being may appear—this is the great achievement by means of which we shall sweep away the false and give place to the true. Thus we may establish in truth the temple, or body, “with foundations, whose architect and builder is God.”[5]

We should consecrate existence, not “to an unknown God” whom we “worship as something unknown,”[6] but to the eternal builder, the everlasting Father, to the life which mortal sense or human logic cannot disable or destroy. We must realize the ability of mental might to offset human misconceptions and to replace them with the life which is spiritual, not limited.

The great spiritual fact must be brought out that God’s child is, not will be, perfect and spiritual. We must hold forever the consciousness of existence and sooner or later, through Truth and Christian Science, we must break out of limited perceptions, out of sin and death. The evidence of our spirituality will become more apparent, as habituated thinking is given up, and the unending facts of being are admitted.

God is divine Life, and Life is no more confined to the forms which reflect it than substance is in its shadow. If life were in human beings or material things, it would be open to their limitations and would end in death. Life is the creator reflected in Mind’s creations. If Life existed inside its creation, God would not be reflected but absorbed and the Science of being would be forever lost through a mortal sense of a beginning and an end.

Divine Science awakens the sinner, rehabilitates the self-deceived, and releases from pain the helpless sufferer. Science speaks the words of Truth to those who are lost and they answer with rejoicing.

You can rejoice in secret beauty and abundance, hidden from worldliness but known to God. Constant prayer spiritualizes thoughts and causes the mortal selfhood to be less demanding and distracting. A mindful practice has the ear and right hand of omnipotence and assuredly calls upon infinite blessings.
