Subject: Grace

Golden text: Psalms 86:11   NKJV, copyright by Thomas Nelson

Teach me Your way, O Lord; I will walk in Your truth; Unite my heart to fear Your name.

Romans 6:1-14

What shall we say then? Shall we continue in sin that grace may abound? Certainly not! How shall we who died to sin live any longer in it? Or do you not know that as many of us as were baptized into Christ Jesus were baptized into His death? Therefore we were buried with Him through baptism into death, that just as Christ was raised from the dead by the glory of the Father, even so we also should walk in newness of life.

For if we have been united together in the likeness of His death, certainly we also shall be in the likeness of His resurrection, knowing this, that our old man was crucified with Him, that the body of sin might be done away with, that we should no longer be slaves of sin. For he who has died has been freed from sin. Now if we died with Christ, we believe that we shall also live with Him, knowing that Christ, having been raised from the dead, dies no more. Death no longer has dominion over Him. 10 For the death that He died, He died to sin once for all; but the life that He lives, He lives to God. 11 Likewise you also, reckon yourselves to be dead indeed to sin, but alive to God in Christ Jesus our Lord.

12 Therefore do not let sin reign in your mortal body, that you should obey it in its lusts. 13 And do not present your members as instruments of unrighteousness to sin, but present yourselves to God as being alive from the dead, and your members as instruments of righteousness to God. 14 For sin shall not have dominion over you, for you are not under law but under grace.

Reconciliation or atonement exemplifies our oneness with the divine, whereby we reflect divine Truth, Life, and Love. Jesus of Nazareth taught and demonstrated oneness with Spirit. Jesus’ accomplishments are worthy of respect. His lifework was done in justice to himself and in mercy to humanity; however, Jesus did not do our work for us. He showed us how to be responsible for our own thoughts and actions. Jesus acted boldly against the human perceptions self-authorized evidence, and against self-righteous dogma and practices. With healing power, Jesus proved the powerlessness of all that opposed goodness.

Christ’s atonement unites our spiritual individuality to God because the divine Principle of Christ is God. It is Christ’s purpose to bring us to God. In other words, Christ isn’t trying to bring God to human beings. Christ can’t reconcile Truth to error, for Truth and error are irreconcilable. Jesus aided in uniting humanity to God by giving us a truer sense of Love, the divine Principle of his teachings. This truer, spiritual sense of Love redeems us from the law of material limitation, sin, and loss by the law of Spirit—the law of unlimited Love.

The Teacher refrained from speaking the whole truth. Jesus declared precisely what would destroy sickness, sin, and death. His teachings cause conflict and brought to material beliefs not peace, but a sword.

Fully recognize your ongoing responsibilities before entering matrimony. Success is guaranteed when both spouses are pleasant. Have a mindful interest in one another’s progress and reciprocate appreciation in a relationship.

Mutual compromises or a prenuptial agreement, will often preserve an arrangement which might otherwise become unbearable. Agree on a realistic intent of marriage and share the responsibilities to meet that intent. As you both fulfill the different demands of your united spheres, you will feel supported, confident, and thus sanctify the union of wellbeing in which the heart finds peace and home.

Unselfish attention to detail in what promotes the success of your spouse, and gentle words, will prove valuable in prolonging one another’s health and smiles. Don’t practice stolid indifference or resentment. Remember, a simple heartfelt word or deed is powerful enough to renew the romance.

It is backwards to complain about incompatibility. Do not deceive yourself, or one another, as to why you are getting married or staying married. Deception is fatal to happiness. Honesty allows you to understand a sensible motive for marriage, if not before, then after the legal union.

The frequency of divorce shows that the sacredness of this relationship is losing its influence. Serious mistakes are undermining the foundation of marriage. Separation need not take place if both husband and wife genuinely put into practice spiritual rules of Truth and Love.

If Life or Soul and its representative person, unite for a period and then are separated as by a law of divorce, to be brought together again at some uncertain future time and in manner unknown, we are left without a rational proof of immortality. We can’t be separated for an instant from God when reflecting God. Divine Science shows spiritual being intact.

Philippians 4

Therefore, my beloved and longed-for brethren, my joy and crown, so stand fast in the Lord, beloved.

I implore Euodia and I implore Syntyche to be of the same mind in the Lord. And I urge you also, true companion, help these women who labored with me in the gospel, with Clement also, and the rest of my fellow workers, whose names are in the Book of Life.

Rejoice in the Lord always. Again I will say, rejoice!

Let your gentleness be known to all men. The Lord is at hand.

Be anxious for nothing, but in everything by prayer and supplication, with thanksgiving, let your requests be made known to God; and the peace of God, which surpasses all understanding, will guard your hearts and minds through Christ Jesus.

Finally, brethren, whatever things are true, whatever things are noble, whatever things are just, whatever things are pure, whatever things are lovely, whatever things are of good report, if there is any virtue and if there is anything praiseworthy—meditate on these things. The things which you learned and received and heard and saw in me, these do, and the God of peace will be with you.

10 But I rejoiced in the Lord greatly that now at last your care for me has flourished again; though you surely did care, but you lacked opportunity. 11 Not that I speak in regard to need, for I have learned in whatever state I am, to be content: 12 I know how to be abased, and I know how to abound. Everywhere and in all things I have learned both to be full and to be hungry, both to abound and to suffer need. 13 I can do all things through Christ who strengthens me.

14 Nevertheless you have done well that you shared in my distress. 15 Now you Philippians know also that in the beginning of the gospel, when I departed from Macedonia, no church shared with me concerning giving and receiving but you only. 16 For even in Thessalonica you sent aid once and again for my necessities. 17 Not that I seek the gift, but I seek the fruit that abounds to your account. 18 Indeed I have all and abound. I am full, having received from Epaphroditus the things sent from you, a sweet-smelling aroma, an acceptable sacrifice, well pleasing to God. 19 And my God shall supply all your need according to His riches in glory by Christ Jesus. 20 Now to our God and Father be glory forever and ever. Amen.

21 Greet every saint in Christ Jesus. The brethren who are with me greet you. 22 All the saints greet you, but especially those who are of Caesar’s household.

23 The grace of our Lord Jesus Christ be with you all. Amen.

Unite with the truth of being as opposed to the ingrained error that life, substance, or intelligence can be in matter.

The five physical senses testify that truth and error, good and evil, are united in human mind. Their false evidence finally yields to Truth—to the recognition of Spirit and of spiritual reality.

Let us suppose two parallel cases of bone disease, both similarly produced and attended by the same symptoms. A surgeon is employed in one case, and a Christian Scientist in the other. The surgeon, believing that matter forms its own conditions and renders them fatal at certain points, entertains fears and doubts as to the ultimate outcome of the disease. Not holding the control-instruments in his own hands, the surgeon believes that something stronger than Mind—controls the case. The surgeon’s treatment is therefore tentative. This mindset invites defeat because it believes it has encountered a superior, called matter. The belief of a power opposing Mind increases fear and makes healing the bone more difficult. Yet this belief should not be communicated to the patient, either verbally or otherwise, for this fear greatly diminishes the tendency toward a favorable result. Remember that the unexpressed belief oftentimes affects a sensitive patient more strongly than the expressed thought.

The Christian Scientist, understanding that all is Mind, commences with mental causation, the truth of being, to destroy the disease, or error. This remedy has the power to correct positively, and to reach to every part of the human system. According to Scripture, it searches the “joints and marrow,”[1] and restores the healthy functions of the body.

The physical-physician deals with physicality as both the aggravator and the reliever. The ailment is regarded as weakened or strengthened according to the evidence which physical matter presents. Conversely, the metaphysical physician makes Mind the basis of the operation, despite matter. The truth and harmony of being are regarded as superior to error and disorder, and the metaphysician is rendered strong instead of weak to cope with the case. The mental scientist proportionately strengthens the patient with the stimulus of courage and conscious power. Both Science and consciousness are now at work in the economy of being according to the law of Mind, which ultimately asserts its absolute presence.

Osteoporosis or any abnormal condition or derangement of the body is as directly the action of mortal mind as are functional or chemically based mental disorders, even depression. Bones and brains have only the substance of thought which forms them. They are phenomena of the minds of human beings. The so-called substance of bone is formed first by the parent’s mind, through self-division. Soon the child becomes a separate, individualized human mind, which takes possession of itself and its own thoughts of bones.

Accidents are unknown to God, or perpetual Mind. We must leave the worldly basis of thinking and unite with the one Mind, in order to change the notion of chance to the proper sense of God’s perfect direction, and thereby bring out harmony.

Question. What is substance?

Answer. Substance is that which is eternal and incapable of disorder and decay. Truth, Life, and Love are substance, as the Scriptures use this word in Hebrews: “The substance of things hoped for, the evidence of things not seen.”[2] Spirit, the synonym of Mind, Soul, or God, is the only real substance. The spiritual universe, including individual persons, is a united idea, reflecting the divine substance of Spirit.

During the sensualist age, absolute divine Science may not be achieved prior to the change called death, for we have not the power to demonstrate what we do not understand. The human self must be evangelized. This task God demands us to accept gracefully, and to abandon as fast as practical the temporal, and to work out the spiritual which determines the outward and actual.
