Subject: Life of Truth
Golden text: Mark 8:31*
And [Jesus] began to teach them that the Son of Man must suffer many things and be rejected by the elders and the chief priests and the scribes and be killed, and after three days rise again.
Now the chief priests and the whole council were seeking testimony against Jesus to put him to death, but they found none. 56 For many bore false witness against him, but their testimony did not agree. 57 And some stood up and bore false witness against him, saying, 58 “We heard him say, ‘I will destroy this temple that is made with hands, and in three days I will build another, not made with hands.’” 59 Yet even about this their testimony did not agree. 60 And the high priest stood up in the midst and asked Jesus, “Have you no answer to make? What is it that these men testify against you?” 61 But he remained silent and made no answer. Again the high priest asked him, “Are you the Christ, the Son of the Blessed?” 62 And Jesus said, “I am, and you will see the Son of Man seated at the right hand of Power, and coming with the clouds of heaven.”
John 18:12-14, 19-24
So the band of soldiers and their captain and the officers of the Jews arrested Jesus and bound him. 13 First they led him to Annas, for he was the father-in-law of Caiaphas, who was high priest that year. 14 It was Caiaphas who had advised the Jews that it would be expedient that one man should die for the people.
19 The high priest then questioned Jesus about his disciples and his teaching. 20 Jesus answered him, “I have spoken openly to the world. I have always taught in synagogues and in the temple, where all Jews come together. I have said nothing in secret. 21 Why do you ask me? Ask those who have heard me what I said to them; they know what I said.” 22 When he had said these things, one of the officers standing by struck Jesus with his hand, saying, “Is that how you answer the high priest?” 23 Jesus answered him, “If what I said is wrong, bear witness about the wrong; but if what I said is right, why do you strike me?” 24 Annas then sent him bound to Caiaphas the high priest.
Surely, we need to do more than preserve unreliable and useless dogmas, derived from religious traditions and stamped with human approval or authorization.
Sin multiplies when we believe life is in human concepts. It’s the same mindset which tried to kill Jesus to get rid of troublesome Truth. Limited concepts try to kill the spiritual idea whenever and wherever it appears. Though error hides behind a lie and excuses guilt, error can’t forever be concealed. Truth, through her eternal laws, causes error and sin to betray itself, and sets upon error the mark of the beast. Even the disposition to justify or conceal guilt is punished. The avoidance of justice and the denial of truth tend to perpetuate sin, invoke crime, jeopardize self-control, and mock divine mercy.
The harmony and immortality of individuals are intact. We should keep our gaze on the spiritual record and not become entranced by the fluxing, changing creation.
The truly Christian and scientific statement of the relationship between spiritual being and God, with the demonstration which accompanied it, incensed the religious leaders, and they said: “Crucify him!”
The tradition of telling people that if they take one doctrine and have total faith in it, they will be filled with the Holy Spirit, receives a strong rebuttal in the Scripture, “Faith by itself, if it is not accompanied by action, is dead.” Faith, at the level of belief, is like a motor piston shifting between nothing and something, having no fixity. Faith, advanced to spiritual understanding, gains evidence of Spirit. Spiritual evidence rebukes groundless beliefs of every kind and establishes the claims of God.
Sin launches deadly attacks at the Scientist of Spirit as ritualism and creed are summoned to give place to higher law, but Science will ameliorate human malice. The spiritually scientific person reflects the divine law, thus becoming a law to self. The Scientist does violence to no person. A Scientist does not falsely accuse. Scientists wisely outline their possibilities, and are honest and consistent in following the leadings of divine Mind.
Fear of punishment never made a person truly honest. Moral courage is requisite to meet the wrong behavior and proclaim the right.
Evil thoughts and aims reach no farther and do no more harm than one’s thinking permits. Lusts and malicious purposes can’t move around like wandering pollen from one human mind to another if virtue and truth build a strong defense. It is important to be aware of your mental environment so as not to be a naive receptor of evil thoughts. You would rather choose a doctor who has the flu to treat you than be treated mentally by a metaphysician who isn’t obeying the requirements of divine Science.
Then [church leaders] led Jesus from the house of Caiaphas to the governor’s headquarters. It was early morning. They themselves did not enter the governor’s headquarters, so that they would not be defiled, but could eat the Passover. 29 So Pilate went outside to them and said, “What accusation do you bring against this man?” 30 They answered him, “If this man were not doing evil, we would not have delivered him over to you.” 31 Pilate said to them, “Take him yourselves and judge him by your own law.” The Jews said to him, “It is not lawful for us to put anyone to death.”32 This was to fulfill the word that Jesus had spoken to show by what kind of death he was going to die.
33 So Pilate entered his headquarters again and called Jesus and said to him, “Are you the King of the Jews?” 34 Jesus answered, “Do you say this of your own accord, or did others say it to you about me?” 35 Pilate answered, “Am I a Jew? Your own nation and the chief priests have delivered you over to me. What have you done?” 36 Jesus answered, “My kingdom is not of this world. If my kingdom were of this world, my servants would have been fighting, that I might not be delivered over to the Jews. But my kingdom is not from the world.” 37 Then Pilate said to him, “So you are a king?” Jesus answered, “You say that I am a king. For this purpose I was born and for this purpose I have come into the world—to bear witness to the truth. Everyone who is of the truth listens to my voice.” 38 Pilate said to him, “What is truth?”
After he had said this, he went back outside to the Jews and told them, “I find no guilt in him.
21st Century Science and Health
Any dishonesty in your theory and practice betrays a gross unawareness of the method of the Truth-cure. Science makes no concessions to persons or opinions. We must live in the morale of truth or we cannot illustrate the divine Principle. So long as fluctuating substance is the basis of practice, illness cannot be efficaciously treated by the divine mental process. Truth does the work and you must both understand and live up to the divine Principle of your demonstration.
To human perception Christian Science seems abstract, but the process is simple and the results are sure if the Science is understood. The tree that produces good fruit must be good itself. Guided by divine Truth and not guesswork, the theologian or the student—the spiritual and scientific expounder of divine law—treats disease with more certain results than any other healer on the planet. It is useful for the Scientist of Truth to understand and adhere strictly to the rules of divine metaphysics as laid down in Science and Health, resting their demonstration on this sure basis.
In 21st Century Science and Health, spiritual principles are explored, however, bear in mind that spiritual principles are rules, and these rules are not the same thing as rules in church organizations.
I have revised Science and Health only to give a clearer and fuller expression of its original meaning. Spiritual ideas unfold as we advance. A human perception of divine Science, however limited, must be correct in order to be Science and subject to demonstration. A germ of infinite Truth, though least in the realm of heaven, is the higher hope on earth, but it will be rejected and hated until God prepares the soil for the seed. That which when sown produces immortal fruit, perfects humanity only when it is understood—consequently, the many readings given the Scriptures, and the requisite revisions of Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures
Walking in the light, we are accustomed to the light and require it; we cannot see in darkness. But eyes accustomed to darkness are pained by the light. When you outgrow the old, do not fear putting on the new. Your advancing course may provoke envy, but it will also attract respect. When error confronts you, do not withhold the rebuke or the explanation which destroys error.
As for sickness and unprogressive mindsets, divine Science says in the language of the Teacher, “Follow me, and let the dead bury their own dead.” In other words, let disorder of every name and nature be heard no more, and let the harmonious and true sense of Life and being occupy human consciousness.
The superiority of spiritual power over sensuous power is the central point of divine Science. Remember, the letter and the mental affirmations only assist human beings in connecting thought with the spirit of Truth and Love, which heals the sick and the sinner.
Mental states of self-condemnation and guilt, or a hesitant and doubting trust in Truth, are unsuitable for healing the sick. Such mindsets indicate weakness instead of strength. This is why it is necessary to be spiritually minded yourself to teach this Science of healing. You must utilize the moral might of Mind in order to walk over the waves of error and support your assertions by demonstration. If you yourself are lost in the belief and fear of disease or sin, and, if knowing the remedy, you fail to use the energies of Mind in your own behalf, you can exercise little or no power to help others. “First take the log out of your own eye, and then you will see clearly to take the speck out of your neighbor’s eye.”
Students, who receive their knowledge of Mind-Science or metaphysical healing from a human teacher, may be mistaken in judgment and demonstration, but God cannot mistake. God selects for the highest service people who have advanced into such a condition that they know any perversion of the mission is impossible. The All-wise does not grant trusts upon the unworthy. When Love commissions a messenger, it is one who is spiritually near Soul. No person can misuse this mental power if they are taught of God to discern it.
This strong point in divine Science is not to be overlooked—that “a spring doesn’t gush fresh water one day and brackish the next.” The more expansive and inclusive your success is in the Science of mental healing and teaching, the more impossible it will become for you intentionally to influence humankind adverse to its highest hope and achievement.
Teaching or practicing in the name of Truth, but contrary to its spirit or rule, is most dangerous quackery. Strict adherence to the divine Principle and rules of the scientific method has secured the only success of the students of divine Science. Only this on-going integrity is worthy of prominence in the community, worthy of a reputation experimentally justified by the people’s efforts.
And when they had crucified him, they divided his garments among them by casting lots.
21st Century Science and Health
Existence continues to be a perception of divided body energies until the Science of being is reached. Erroneous methodologies and belief systems bring their own self-destruction both here and hereafter because mortal mind creates its own mortal conditions. Death will occur on the next plane of existence as on this until the spiritual understanding of Life is achieved. Then, and not until then, will it be demonstrated that “the second death has no power over them.”
The clothing of Life is Truth. The Bible warned against the common habit of misconstruing truth, for it is written: “They divided my garments among them and cast lots for my clothing.” The divine Science of an individual is woven into one garment of consistency without seam or rip. Mere speculation or superstition cannot divide the divine clothing, whereas spiritual inspiration can restore every fiber of the Christly garment of righteousness.
