Subject: Believe

Golden text: Mark 1:14-15*

After John was put in prison, Jesus went into Galilee, proclaiming the good news of God. 15 “The time has come,” he said. “The kingdom of God has come near. Repent and believe the good news!”

Genesis 15:1-6

After this, the word of the Lord came to Abram in a vision:

“Do not be afraid, Abram.
    I am your shield,
    your very great reward.”

But Abram said, “Sovereign Lord, what can you give me since I remain childless and the one who will inherit my estate is Eliezer of Damascus?” And Abram said, “You have given me no children; so a servant in my household will be my heir.”

Then the word of the Lord came to him: “This man will not be your heir, but a son who is your own flesh and blood will be your heir.” He took him outside and said, “Look up at the sky and count the stars—if indeed you can count them.” Then he said to him, “So shall your offspring be.”

Abram believed the Lord, and he credited it to him as righteousness.

21st Century Science and Health**

Human beings are believed to be here without their consent and to be removed as involuntarily, not knowing why or when. As frightened children look everywhere for the imaginary ghost, so sick humanity sees danger in every direction and looks for relief in human rather than spiritual knowledge and reality isn’t comprehended. Darkness stimulates fear. Adult and child must be taken out of their darkness before the illusive sufferings, which block the light, can be dissolved. The way in divine Science is the only way out of fearful conditions.

I would not transform the infant immediately into an adult, nor would I keep the infant a lifelong newborn. No impossible thing do I ask when urging the claims of Christian Science; but because this teaching is in advance of the times, we should not deny our need of its spiritual unfoldment. Humanity will improve through Science and spirituality. The necessity for spiritualizing humanity comes from the fact that Mind can do it. Mind, God, can impart purity instead of impurity, strength instead of weakness, and health instead of disease. Truth improves the entire system, and can heal “the whole body.”[1]

You must understand your way out of human theories relating to health or you will never believe that you are quite free from some affliction. Our harmony and spirituality will never be reached without the understanding that Mind is not in matter. Let us banish sickness as an outlaw and abide by the rule of perpetual harmony—God’s law. It is our moral right to nullify an unjust sentence, a sentence never inflicted by divine authority.

Abraham. Perseverance; faith in the divine Life and in the eternal Principle of being.

This patriarch illustrated the purpose of Love to create trust in good, and showed the life-preserving power of spiritual understanding.

Matthew 8:5-13

When Jesus had entered Capernaum, a centurion came to him, asking for help. “Lord,” he said, “my servant lies at home paralyzed, suffering terribly.”

Jesus said to him, “Shall I come and heal him?”

The centurion replied, “Lord, I do not deserve to have you come under my roof. But just say the word, and my servant will be healed. For I myself am a man under authority, with soldiers under me. I tell this one, ‘Go,’ and he goes; and that one, ‘Come,’ and he comes. I say to my servant, ‘Do this,’ and he does it.”

10 When Jesus heard this, he was amazed and said to those following him, “Truly I tell you, I have not found anyone in Israel with such great faith. 11 I say to you that many will come from the east and the west, and will take their places at the feast with Abraham, Isaac and Jacob in the kingdom of heaven. 12 But the subjects of the kingdom will be thrown outside, into the darkness, where there will be weeping and gnashing of teeth.”

13 Then Jesus said to the centurion, “Go! Let it be done just as you believed it would.” And his servant was healed at that moment.

21st Century Science and Health

The life of Christ Jesus was not miraculous but was indigenous to his spirituality—the good soil wherein the seed of Truth is heard, understood, and found producing a great crop.[2] Spirituality is the consistent link of scientific being, connecting all space and time in the design of Love. Weakness, illusion, and unruliness do not exist in divine Science.

Jesus instructed his disciples to heal the sick through Mind instead of matter. He knew that the philosophy, Science, and proof of spirituality were in Truth, overcoming all disorders and confusion.

In Latin, the word disciple signifies student, a learner. The power of healing was not a supernatural gift to those learners, but the result of their cultivated spiritual understanding of the divine Science which their Teacher illustrated by healing the sick and sinning. Jesus’ prayer includes us: “My prayer is not for them alone. I pray also for those who will believe in me [understand me] through their message.”

Prayer can be dangerous if it tempts us to voice desires that aren’t real or to assume we are more spiritual than we really are. We become involuntary hypocrites when we use prayer to console ourselves without making genuine efforts to break out of illusory mindsets. Prayer is hazardous when we stay in deceptive mindsets and think we can pray for forgiveness later.

It is mental quackery to make disease a reality and then attempt to cure it through Mind. In other words, don’t pretend to be metaphysicians when you are holding disease as something seen and felt before undertaking its cure through Spirit. It is no less an illusion to believe in the real existence of a tumor, a cancer, or decayed lungs, while you argue against their reality, than it is for your patient to feel these ills in physical belief. Mental practice (malpractice), which holds disease as a reality, links disease to the patient and it may appear in a more alarming form.

Justice declares the presence of law. Injustice declares the absence of law. When the body says, “I am sick,” never plead guilty. Since matter can’t talk, it must be human mind which speaks; therefore, meet the implication, “I am sick,” with a protest against it, but be fair to others if you need to tell them you have a contagious illness. Disease has no intelligence to declare itself something and announce its name. Human mortal mind alone sentences itself. Therefore, make your own terms with sickness and be just to yourself and to others.

Mentally contradict every complaint from the body. Evolve into the spiritual consciousness of Life as Love—as all that is pure, and bearing the fruits of Spirit. Fear is the source of sickness. You offset fear and negative desires through divine Mind; consequently, it is through divine Mind that you overcome disease. Only while fear or sin remains can it bring forth death. To cure a bodily ailment, every broken moral law should be taken into account and the error be rebuked. Fear, which is an element of all disease, must be driven out so you can focus better on God. With less fearful and ignorant thinking, you are able to see truth. The only course is to take antagonistic grounds against all that is opposed to the health, holiness, and harmony of our spirituality, of God’s image.

The physical affirmation of disease should always be met with the mental negation. Whatever benefit is produced on the body must be expressed mentally, and thought should be held fast to the improved ideal. If you believe in inflamed and weak nerves, you are liable to an attack from that source. You will call it neuralgia, but I call it a belief. If you think that cancer is hereditary in your family, you are liable to the development of that thought, unless Science shows you otherwise. If you decide that the weather or air quality is unhealthy, it will be so to you. Your decisions will control you, whichever direction they take.

Improve the case. Safeguard, or firewall your thought. Admit only those conclusions that you wish realized in bodily results and you will control yourself harmoniously.

Christ Jesus was an excellent example. Like him, the healer should speak to disease as having authority over it, leaving Soul to prevail over the false evidence of the physical senses and to assert Spirit’s claims over mortality and disease. The same Principle cures both sin and sickness. When divine Science overcomes faith in a fleshly mind; and faith in God destroys all faith in mortal thinking and methods of healing, then sin, disease, and dying will disappear.

Prayers, in which God is not asked to heal but is asked to take the patient to Himself, do not benefit the sick. An ill-tempered, complaining, or deceitful person should not be a nurse. Health practitioners should be happy, orderly, conscientious, patient, full of faith—receptive to Truth and Love.

Here are four serious mistakes: Supposing that sin is forgiven before the sin is abandoned; that happiness is genuine when connected to sin; that death of the body frees us from anything unspiritual; and that God will forgive a sin without destroying it. We know that all will be changed “in the twinkling of an eye,”[3] when the last trumpet will sound; but this last call of wisdom can’t come until human beings have taken every little step to yield to the whole spiritual character. Mortals do not need to delude themselves by thinking the experience of death will awaken them to glorified being.

Universal salvation rests on spiritual improvement and proof, and is unattainable without them. Heaven is not a locality, but is a divine state of Mind in which all the manifestations of Mind are harmonious and immortal because sin is not there. God’s person is found having no self-righteousness, but is in possession of “the mind of the Lord”[4]

The divine Love which made harmless the poisonous viper and delivered believers from their nations destruction, the fiery furnace, and jaws of the lion, can also heal the sick in every era and triumph over sin and loss. Love honored the demonstrations of Jesus with unsurpassed power and compassion, but the same, “attitude…as that of Christ Jesus”[5] must always accompany the letter of Science in order to confirm and repeat the ancient demonstrations of prophets and apostles.
