Subject: One with God

Golden text: Isaiah 58:6

“Is not this the fast that I choose: to loose the bonds of wickedness, to undo the straps of the yoke, to let the oppressed go free, and to break every yoke?

Luke 4:33-44

And [Jesus] arose and left the synagogue and entered Simon’s house. Now Simon’s mother-in-law was ill with a high fever, and they appealed to him on her behalf. 39 And he stood over her and rebuked the fever, and it left her, and immediately she rose and began to serve them.

40 Now when the sun was setting, all those who had any who were sick with various diseases brought them to him, and he laid his hands on every one of them and healed them. 41 And demons also came out of many, crying, “You are the Son of God!” But he rebuked them and would not allow them to speak, because they knew that he was the Christ.

42 And when it was day, he departed and went into a desolate place. And the people sought him and came to him, and would have kept him from leaving them, 43 but he said to them, “I must preach the good news of the kingdom of God to the other towns as well; for I was sent for this purpose.” 44 And he was preaching in the synagogues of Judea.

We have overwhelming proof that the human mind claims to control every organ of the mortal body. But this mind is a myth and must by its own consent yield to Truth. Although the human mind throws its weight around, it is powerless. The immortal divine Mind takes away all the human minds assumed expertise and saves human mind from itself. I have endeavored to make the ideas in this book the medicine of mind and body, to give hope and healing to the needy, even if they don’t know how the work is done. Truth has a healing effect even when not fully understood.

Anatomy says thoughts can move the muscles—sometimes. Such noncommittal beliefs plague every material theory in which one statement contradicts another. It is related that Sir Humphry Davy[1] once apparently cured a case of paralysis simply by introducing a thermometer into the patient’s mouth. The thermometer was intended to ascertain the patient’s body temperature; but the sick man, supposed this ceremony was intended to heal him and he recovered accordingly. Such a fact illustrates that all bodily activity comes from thought, not sometimes, but always.

My medical researches and experiments prepared my thought for the metaphysics of divine Science. I was searching for truth and discovered that all dependence on temporal medicine failed to help. I now understand why and can see the means by which human beings are divinely driven to a spiritual source for health and happiness.

When I experimented with homeopathy, I became skeptical about alternative methods still involving drugs. Books on homeopathy, natural cures, and so on, discuss general symptoms and signs of health problems, and then suggest different remedies. Homeopathic drugs are diluted to such a degree that not a trace of active ingredient remains, making it obvious that the drug is not removing or changing the symptoms of disease.

To cure a patient dying of typhoid fever, I diluted common table-salt until the sodium chloride had “become tasteless.”[2] One drop of the attenuation in a cup of water, and a teaspoonful of the water administered at intervals of three hours, proved that the active ingredient went from matter to mind. The drug was not the curative power. This discovery leads to more light and we can learn whether human faith or divine Mind is the healer.

Luke 5:1-11

On one occasion, while the crowd was pressing in on [Jesus] to hear the word of God, he was standing by the lake of Gennesaret, and he saw two boats by the lake, but the fishermen had gone out of them and were washing their nets. Getting into one of the boats, which was Simon’s, he asked him to put out a little from the land. And he sat down and taught the people from the boat. And when he had finished speaking, he said to Simon, “Put out into the deep and let down your nets for a catch.” And Simon answered, “Master, we toiled all night and took nothing! But at your word I will let down the nets.” And when they had done this, they enclosed a large number of fish, and their nets were breaking. They signaled to their partners in the other boat to come and help them. And they came and filled both the boats, so that they began to sink. But when Simon Peter saw it, he fell down at Jesus’ knees, saying, “Depart from me, for I am a sinful man, O Lord.” For he and all who were with him were astonished at the catch of fish that they had taken, 10 and so also were James and John, sons of Zebedee, who were partners with Simon. And Jesus said to Simon, “Do not be afraid; from now on you will be catching men.” 11 And when they had brought their boats to land, they left everything and followed him.

Metaphysics, as aligned with Christly logic and Truth, is the next advanced step beyond holistic methods. In metaphysics, matter disappears from the remedy entirely and Mind takes its rightful and supreme place. Holistic methods take mental symptoms into consideration in its diagnosis of disease, but divine Science deals wholly with the mental cause in judging and destroying disease. It succeeds where holistic methods fail because the one recognized Principle of healing is Mind, and the whole force of the mental element is employed through the Science of Mind, which never shares its rights with inanimate matter.

God said: “Let us make man [humane being, person, God’s posterity] in our image, in our likeness, and let them rule over the fish of the sea and the birds of the air, over the livestock, over all the earth, and over all the creatures that move along the ground.”[3]

Humane, spiritual beings are incapable of sin, sickness, and death. The substantial idea of person cannot fall from holiness. God, from whom person evolved, cannot bring about the capacity or freedom to sin. A mortal sinner is not God’s image. Mortals are the counterfeits of immortals; they are the heirs of the one evil, which insists that we begin in dust and have detached physical identities. In divine Science, God and our spiritual identity are as inseparable as divine Principle and idea.

Error, urged to its final limits, is self-destroyed. Error will cease to hypothesize that soul is in body, that life and intelligence are in human minds, and that human mind is person. Divine Mind is the Principle of spiritual being, and person is the idea of God; therefore, spiritual being has no mortal pattern or relationship. Mortals will disappear, and immortals—the children of God—will appear as the only and eternal fact of existence.

Romans 9:20-26

But who are you, O man, to answer back to God? Will what is molded say to its molder, “Why have you made me like this?” 21 Has the potter no right over the clay, to make out of the same lump one vessel for honorable use and another for dishonorable use? 22 What if God, desiring to show his wrath and to make known his power, has endured with much patience vessels of wrath prepared for destruction, 23 in order to make known the riches of his glory for vessels of mercy, which he has prepared beforehand for glory— 24 even us whom he has called, not from the Jews only but also from the Gentiles? 25 As indeed he says in Hosea,

“Those who were not my people I will call ‘my people,’
and her who was not beloved I will call ‘beloved.’”
26 “And in the very place where it was said to them, ‘You are not my people,’
there they will be called ‘sons of the living God.’”

Biotechnology can now claim that life starts in the laboratory. But, should we look at a bud, a cell, or DNA as the starting point of the most complicated bodily structures, including those which we call human life? Unless this question is answered with some metaphysical consideration, physical research will be random and open to vulnerability and death. It’s no wonder our theories and experiences will continue to change as programmed human thinking is replaced by spiritual reality.

Bruce Lipton, Ph.D. uses common sense to move thought into a new biology, saying, “Genes are not destiny! Environmental influences, including nutrition, stress and emotions, can modify those genes, without changing their basic blueprint.”[4] We can’t be our DNA because it is constantly renewing and dying. Every day, DNA falls off us as dead skin, or it hangs around in our skeleton after we die, so, where is our life? Our individuality and life is metaphysical, known in Mind, in thought.

If we came from genes, how did Mind come to human beings? DNA surely does not possess Mind or a consciousness. God is the life or intelligence which forms and preserves the individuality, consciousness, and identity of the universe, people, and animals. Spirit cannot become a finite human mind nor be limited to human perceptions. Spirit cannot be developed through something which would resist it. Of what advantage is it then to only investigate material human life, which ends as it begins, in nameless nothingness? The true sense of being and its eternal perfection should appear now, even as it will hereafter.

Spiritual cause is the one question to be considered, for more than all others spiritual causation relates to human progress. The collective mass consciousness is approaching this subject and pondering somewhat the supremacy of Spirit.

Supposing that the potter is subject to the clay is like saying the genetic engineer is subject to, or constrained by, the genetically altered organism. When God isn’t understood as our source, attempts are made to reduce truth to the level of error where the sensible is required to be made manifest through the insensible.

It is constructive for physicians, therapists, and practitioners to know and act on the truth that Mind is existent. Healers should not take the position that matter is the only cause.

As a drop of water is one with the ocean, a ray of light one with the sun, even so God and spiritual being, Parent and child, are one in being.
