Golden text: Psalms 127:1-2
Unless the Lord watches over the city,
the watchman stays awake in vain.
2 It is in vain that you rise up early
and go late to rest,
eating the bread of anxious toil;
for he gives to his beloved sleep.
I Samuel 9:1-19
There was a man of Benjamin whose name was Kish, the son of Abiel, son of Zeror, son of Becorath, son of Aphiah, a Benjaminite, a man of wealth. 2 And he had a son whose name was Saul, a handsome young man. There was not a man among the people of Israel more handsome than he. From his shoulders upward he was taller than any of the people.
3 Now the donkeys of Kish, Saul’s father, were lost. So Kish said to Saul his son, “Take one of the young men with you, and arise, go and look for the donkeys.” 4 And he passed through the hill country of Ephraim and passed through the land of Shalishah, but they did not find them. And they passed through the land of Shaalim, but they were not there. Then they passed through the land of Benjamin, but did not find them.
5 When they came to the land of Zuph, Saul said to his servant who was with him, “Come, let us go back, lest my father cease to care about the donkeys and become anxious about us.” 6 But he said to him, “Behold, there is a man of God in this city, and he is a man who is held in honor; all that he says comes true. So now let us go there. Perhaps he can tell us the way we should go.” 7 Then Saul said to his servant, “But if we go, what can we bring the man? For the bread in our sacks is gone, and there is no present to bring to the man of God. What do we have?” 8 The servant answered Saul again, “Here, I have with me a quarter of a shekel of silver, and I will give it to the man of God to tell us our way.” 9 (Formerly in Israel, when a man went to inquire of God, he said, “Come, let us go to the seer,” for today’s “prophet” was formerly called a seer.) 10 And Saul said to his servant, “Well said; come, let us go.” So they went to the city where the man of God was.
11 As they went up the hill to the city, they met young women coming out to draw water and said to them, “Is the seer here?” 12 They answered, “He is; behold, he is just ahead of you. Hurry. He has come just now to the city, because the people have a sacrifice today on the high place. 13 As soon as you enter the city you will find him, before he goes up to the high place to eat. For the people will not eat till he comes, since he must bless the sacrifice; afterward those who are invited will eat. Now go up, for you will meet him immediately.” 14 So they went up to the city. As they were entering the city, they saw Samuel coming out toward them on his way up to the high place.
15 Now the day before Saul came, the Lord had revealed to Samuel: 16 “Tomorrow about this time I will send to you a man from the land of Benjamin, and you shall anoint him to be prince over my people Israel. He shall save my people from the hand of the Philistines. For I have seen my people, because their cry has come to me.” 17 When Samuel saw Saul, the Lord told him, “Here is the man of whom I spoke to you! He it is who shall restrain my people.” 18 Then Saul approached Samuel in the gate and said, “Tell me where is the house of the seer?” 19 Samuel answered Saul, “I am the seer. Go up before me to the high place, for today you shall eat with me, and in the morning I will let you go and will tell you all that is on your mind.

When navigating aircraft through a storm the pressure is shifting, the wind is shrieking, and air pockets are hiding in the air currents. We ask the pilot: “Do you know your course? Can you aviate safely among this turbulence?” Though brave, the dauntless aviator is not sure of safety because even aeronautical science is not equal to the Science of Mind. Yet, acting on his or her highest understanding, the pilot doesn’t avoid responsibility but keeps working, ready to act on divine guidance. This example of behavior can be useful in any stressful relationship, including a seething marriage. Be accountable, hope and work, willingly act on divine guidance, not private interests. Divine guidance will either force a graceful change or calm the enraged atmosphere.
If the reader of this book observes a great stir throughout their system, and certain moral and physical symptoms seem aggravated, these indications are favorable. Continue to read, and the book will become the physician, moderating the anxiety which Truth often brings about when destroying error.
Patients, unfamiliar with the cause of mental reactions, and ignorant that it is a favorable sign, may be alarmed. If such be the case, explain to them the law of this action. As when an acid and alkali meet and bring out a third quality, so mental and moral chemistry changes the materialist thought and gives more spirituality to consciousness, causing it to depend less on material evidence. These changes which go on in human mind serve to reconstruct the body. Thus divine Science, by the alchemy of Spirit, destroys concepts of mortality.
Let us suppose two parallel cases of bone disease, both similarly produced and attended by the same symptoms. A surgeon is employed in one case, and a Christian Scientist in the other. The surgeon, believing that matter forms its own conditions and renders them fatal at certain points, entertains fears and doubts as to the ultimate outcome of the disease. Not holding the control-instruments in his own hands, the surgeon believes that something stronger than Mind—controls the case. The surgeon’s treatment is therefore tentative. This mindset invites defeat because it believes it has encountered a superior, called matter. The belief of a power opposing Mind increases fear and makes healing the bone more difficult. Yet this belief should not be communicated to the patient, either verbally or otherwise, for this fear greatly diminishes the tendency toward a favorable result. Remember that the unexpressed belief oftentimes affects a sensitive patient more strongly than the expressed thought.
The Christian Scientist, understanding that all is Mind, commences with mental causation, the truth of being, to destroy the disease, or error. This remedy has the power to correct positively, and to reach to every part of the human system. According to Scripture, it searches the “joints and marrow,” and restores the healthy functions of the body.
The physical-physician deals with physicality as both the aggravator and the reliever. The ailment is regarded as weakened or strengthened according to the evidence which physical matter presents. Conversely, the metaphysical physician makes Mind the basis of the operation, despite matter. The truth and harmony of being are regarded as superior to error and disorder, and the metaphysician is rendered strong instead of weak to cope with the case. The mental scientist proportionately strengthens the patient with the stimulus of courage and conscious power. Both Science and consciousness are now at work in the economy of being according to the law of Mind, which ultimately asserts its absolute presence.
Now as they went on their way, Jesus entered a village. And a woman named Martha welcomed him into her house. 39 And she had a sister called Mary, who sat at the Lord’s feet and listened to his teaching. 40 But Martha was distracted with much serving. And she went up to him and said, “Lord, do you not care that my sister has left me to serve alone? Tell her then to help me.” 41 But the Lord answered her, “Martha, Martha, you are anxious and troubled about many things, 42 but one thing is necessary. Mary has chosen the good portion, which will not be taken away from her.”

The demands of Truth are spiritual and reach the body through Mind. The best interpreter of our needs said: “Stop being perpetually uneasy (anxious and worried) about your life, what you shall eat or what you shall drink.”
If there are physical laws which prevent disease, what then causes disease? Spiritual law did not cause disease. Jesus, obedient to Spirit, healed the sick and cast out error in defiance of physics.
Spiritual cause is the one question to be considered, for more than all others spiritual causation relates to human progress. The collective mass consciousness is approaching this subject and pondering somewhat the supremacy of Spirit. Touching the fringe of Truth’s “cloak” is a worthy goal.
The description of people as purely molecular, or as a mixture of molecules and spirituality—but in either case dependent upon their physical organization—is a can of worms. Opening this can, we find all ills, especially depression. Materiality takes divine power into its own hands and claims to be a creator, but it is only a fabricated fiction. In this fabrication, idolatry and lust are so encouraged by society that humankind has caught their moral contagion.
We can discover the spiritual opposite of materiality. The way through Christ, Truth, allows us to reopen with the key of divine Science, the gates of Paradise, closed by human beliefs. There will then be no need to consult reference books for the probabilities of life. It will be unnecessary to study DNA or neurons to learn the state of our substance and purpose. We can find our self not fallen, but upright, pure, and free.
Mind’s control over the universe and humankind is no longer an open question, but is demonstrable Science. Jesus illustrated the divine Principle and the power of spiritual Mind by healing sickness and sin and destroying the sources of ruin.
Mistaking our origin and nature, we believe we are a combination of atoms and Spirit. This leads to believing that Spirit is broken down through matter, transported by a nerve, and exposed to removal by an operation. The intellectual, the moral, the spiritual—subject to non-intelligence!
No more like-mindedness exists between the flesh and Spirit than between Belial and Christ.
The laws of matter are nothing but the mindset that intelligence and life are present where Mind is not. Mindlessness is the procuring cause of all sin and disease. The opposite truth, that Mind is infinite and that intelligence and life are spiritual, can destroy sin, sickness, and downfall.
The fundamental error is to suppose we are the result of matter and that the knowledge of good and evil, caught through the physical senses, constitute our happiness or misery.
Insisting that human beings went through a chain of development from a single-celled organism to a monkey to a person is unproductive.
The chain of material evolution is a conundrum. If we came from a single-celled organism, why do we still have monkeys? Did the chain of material evolution break at some point? Spirit certainly can’t form a link in a chain of material being. Divine Science reveals the eternal chain of existence as uninterrupted and wholly spiritual. Spirituality can only be realized as the false sense of being disappears.
If we ever were material beings, we must have passed through all the forms of matter to be where we are now. Were we once a part of dirt? The belief that Soul is in matter obtains and swims around in human minds, to which the apostle refers when he says that we must “put off your old self, which is being corrupted by its deceitful desires.” Our true self is the image and likeness of Spirit.
