Golden text: Psalms 69:16-18*
Answer me, O Lord, for your steadfast love is good;
according to your abundant mercy, turn to me.
17 Hide not your face from your servant,
for I am in distress; make haste to answer me.
18 Draw near to my soul, redeem me;
ransom me because of my enemies!
Isaiah 35:1-4, 10
The wilderness and the dry land shall be glad;
the desert shall rejoice and blossom like the crocus;
2 it shall blossom abundantly
and rejoice with joy and singing.
The glory of Lebanon shall be given to it,
the majesty of Carmel and Sharon.
They shall see the glory of the Lord,
the majesty of our God.
3 Strengthen the weak hands,
and make firm the feeble knees.
4 Say to those who have an anxious heart,
“Be strong; fear not!
Behold, your God
will come with vengeance,
with the recompense of God.
He will come and save you.”
10 And the ransomed of the Lord shall return
and come to Zion with singing;
everlasting joy shall be upon their heads;
they shall obtain gladness and joy,
and sorrow and sighing shall flee away.

The spiritual recompense of the persecuted is assured in the elevation of existence above the disorder and in the gift of divine Love.
Suppose an accident happens to the eye, then the ear has a problem, then the taste buds can’t be stimulated, and so on, until every physical sense is lost. What is the remedy? To die, that we may regain these faculties? Even then we must gain spiritual understanding and spiritual sense, in order to possess indestructible consciousness. Earth’s preparatory school must be improved to the utmost. In reality spiritual beings never die. The belief that we die will not establish scientific harmony. Death is not the result of Truth but of error, and one error will not correct another. Every day we must improve, discover, and utilize our spiritual faculties.
Spiritual sight, hearing, and so on, are eternal. Immortal senses cannot be lost. The reality and immortality of spiritual sense are in Spirit and understanding—hence their permanence. The senses are not in mutating matter and energy. If the body’s physical senses were the medium through which to understand God, then paralysis, disabilities, blindness, and deafness would place people in a terrible situation, “Without hope and without God in the world.” These calamities, however, often drive human beings to seek and to find a more secure sense of happiness and existence in Spirit.
Life is deathless. Life is the origin and ultimate of spiritual being, never attainable through death. Life is discovered by breaking human thought barriers with Truth both before and after that which is called death. There is more spirituality in seeing and hearing objectively, than seeing and hearing with the bias of human knowledge and experiences. There is more Science in the perpetual exercise of the Mind-faculties than in their loss. The true perceptions cannot be lost while Mind remains. This comprehension gave sight to the blind and hearing to the deaf centuries ago, and it will repeat the wonder.
The way through which immortality and life are learned is not ecclesiastical but divine, not human but holy, not physical but metaphysical, not material but scientifically spiritual. Human philosophy, ethics, and superstition afford no demonstrable divine Principle by which human beings can escape from sin and mortality; yet to find safety in Love is what faith demands. “Work out your salvation with fear and trembling,” says the apostle, and he straightway adds, “for it is God who works in you to will and to act according to his good purpose.” Truth has furnished the key to the kingdom, and with this key Christian Science has opened the door of the human understanding. None may pick the lock nor enter by some other door. The secular teachings are material and not spiritual. Christian Science teaches that which is spiritual and divine. Spiritual sense is unmistaken; whereas, human perceptions make mistakes.
Bear in mind, people who adopt New Age techniques, mysticism, or hypnotism, may be more spiritual than individuals who shun or avoid their practices. Therefore, my contest is not with those practitioners, but with the false systems. I love humanity, and will continue to labor and to endure.
The calm, strong forces of true spirituality are manifest as health, purity, and a magnanimous self. Spiritual mindedness must expand the human experience until the beliefs of temporal being are clearly exposed as impositions. Confusion, danger, and disorder will then give everlasting place to the scientific demonstration of divine Spirit and to God’s radiant offspring.
Then the mother of the sons of Zebedee came up to [Jesus] with her sons, and kneeling before him she asked him for something. 21 And he said to her, “What do you want?” She said to him, “Say that these two sons of mine are to sit, one at your right hand and one at your left, in your kingdom.” 22 Jesus answered, “You do not know what you are asking. Are you able to drink the cup that I am to drink?” They said to him, “We are able.” 23 He said to them, “You will drink my cup, but to sit at my right hand and at my left is not mine to grant, but it is for those for whom it has been prepared by my Father.” 24 And when the ten heard it, they were indignant at the two brothers. 25 But Jesus called them to him and said, “You know that the rulers of the Gentiles lord it over them, and their great ones exercise authority over them. 26 It shall not be so among you. But whoever would be great among you must be your servant, 27 and whoever would be first among you must be your slave, 28 even as the Son of Man came not to be served but to serve, and to give his life as a ransom for many.” 29 And as they went out of Jericho, a great crowd followed him. 30 And behold, there were two blind men sitting by the roadside, and when they heard that Jesus was passing by, they cried out, “Lord, have mercy on us, Son of David!” 31 The crowd rebuked them, telling them to be silent, but they cried out all the more, “Lord, have mercy on us, Son of David!” 32 And stopping, Jesus called them and said, “What do you want me to do for you?” 33 They said to him, “Lord, let our eyes be opened.” 34 And Jesus in pity touched their eyes, and immediately they recovered their sight and followed him.

There is great danger in teaching Mind-healing indiscriminately, thus disregarding the morals of the student and caring only for the payments. Recall words that have been credited to Thomas Jefferson concerning slavery, “I tremble, when I remember that God is just.” I tremble whenever I see a person, for the petty reward of money, teaching his or her slight knowledge of Mind-power—increasing the probability of communicating the teacher’s own bad morals. This sad state deals pitilessly with a community unprepared for self-defense.
The mistaken thinking, that the unconscious substratum of human mind, termed the body, suffers and reports disease independently of this so-called conscious mind, is an error. This mistake prevents human beings from knowing how to control their bodies.
The conscious human mind is believed to be superior to its unconscious substratum, matter, and the stronger never yields to the weaker, except through fear or choice. But, the animate should be governed by God alone. Our real identity is spiritual and immortal. We can lay aside the counterfeit version of God’s children as imperfect beings. Mortality is put off and spirituality is put on in proportion as human beings realize the Science of true identity and seek the true model.
We have no right to say that life depends on matter now but will not depend on it after death. We cannot spend our days here ignoring the Science of Life, and expect to find beyond the grave a reward for this ignorance. Death will not make us harmonious and spiritual as a recompense for ignorance. If here we do not pay attention to the Science of Christ, which is spiritual and eternal, we shall not be ready for spiritual Life hereafter.
Divine Science silences human will, disables fear with Truth and Love, and illustrates the unlabored motion of the divine energy in healing the sick. Self-indulgence, envy, emotionalism, arrogance, hatred, and revenge are dissolved by divine Mind which heals disease. The human will which makes and works a lie, hiding the divine Principle of harmony, is destructive to health and is the cause of disease rather than its cure.
Having one God, one Mind, unfolds the power that heals disorders and fulfills the Scriptures: “I am the Lord, who heals you,” and “I have found a ransom (a price of redemption, an atonement)!” When the divine precepts are understood, they reveal orderly relationships and cooperation between creatures, because we all have one Spirit, God, one intelligent source, in accord with the Scriptural command: “Your attitude should be the same as that of Christ Jesus.” We, and our Maker have an unbreakable relationship in divine Science, and real consciousness is cognizant only of the things of God.
The nature of spirituality is peaceful and blessed. To enter the realm of Spirit, our anchor of hope must be thrown past the veil of matter into the Shekinah that Jesus showed us. This advance beyond superficial thinking comes through the joys and triumphs of the righteous as well as through their sorrows and afflictions. We must leave mortal impressions of fleshly being and advance into immortal impressions of spiritual being.
To grasp the reality and order of being in its Science, you must begin by admitting Love as the divine Principle of reality. Spirit, Life, Truth, Love, combine as one—and are the Scriptural names for God. All substance, intelligence, wisdom, being, spirituality, cause, and effect belong to God. These are the attributes of the infinite divine Principle, Love. No wisdom is wise but Mind’s wisdom; no truth is true, no love is lovely, no life is Life but the divine; no good is, but the good God gives.
Take the time to look past the fading, sensational pictures. Gain the true sense of life. Rest your gaze on the unsearchable realm of Mind. Look ahead and act as possessing all power from Truth and Love in whom you have your being.
