Subject: Doing right

Golden text: Romans 13:10*

Love does no wrong to a neighbor; therefore love is the fulfilling of the law.

Genesis 16

Now Sarai, Abram’s wife, had borne him no children. She had a female Egyptian servant whose name was Hagar. And Sarai said to Abram, “Behold now, the Lord has prevented me from bearing children. Go in to my servant; it may be that I shall obtain children by her.” And Abram listened to the voice of Sarai. So, after Abram had lived ten years in the land of Canaan, Sarai, Abram’s wife, took Hagar the Egyptian, her servant, and gave her to Abram her husband as a wife. And he went in to Hagar, and she conceived. And when she saw that she had conceived, she looked with contempt on her mistress. And Sarai said to Abram, “May the wrong done to me be on you! I gave my servant to your embrace, and when she saw that she had conceived, she looked on me with contempt. May the Lord judge between you and me!” But Abram said to Sarai, “Behold, your servant is in your power; do to her as you please.” Then Sarai dealt harshly with her, and she fled from her.

The angel of the Lord found her by a spring of water in the wilderness, the spring on the way to Shur. And he said, “Hagar, servant of Sarai, where have you come from and where are you going?” She said, “I am fleeing from my mistress Sarai.” The angel of the Lord said to her, “Return to your mistress and submit to her.” 10 The angel of the Lord also said to her, “I will surely multiply your offspring so that they cannot be numbered for multitude.” 11 And the angel of the Lord said to her,

“Behold, you are pregnant
    and shall bear a son.
You shall call his name Ishmael,
because the Lord has listened to your affliction.
12 He shall be a wild donkey of a man,
    his hand against everyone
    and everyone’s hand against him,
and he shall dwell over against all his kinsmen.”

13 So she called the name of the Lord who spoke to her, “You are a God of seeing,” for she said, “Truly here I have seen him who looks after me.” 14 Therefore the well was called Beer-lahai-roi; it lies between Kadesh and Bered.

15 And Hagar bore Abram a son, and Abram called the name of his son, whom Hagar bore, Ishmael. 16 Abram was eighty-six years old when Hagar bore Ishmael to Abram.

Research shows the frailty and inadequacy of human minds and brains. Professor Susan Greenfield reports online at www.dailymail.co.uk, that, “Today’s technology is already producing a marked shift in the way we think and behave, particularly among the young.” Specifically talking about pleasure, Greenfield continues, “For some, pleasure means wine, women and song; for others, more recently, sex, drugs and rock-n-roll; and for millions today, endless hours at the computer console.”[1]

These cases prove physical senses are beliefs formed by education or trained behavior. The hours and days spent in front of the computer video games would appall individuals who enjoy personal communications and walks in the park. Electronic sounds and sights thrill some viewers while agitating others who were trained in opposite directions.

The point to decide is whether human mind or spiritual Mind acts as the cause. It is much more productive to forsake the basis of matter for the metaphysical basis of Science and its divine Principle.

Whatever resembles an idea governed by Principle, furnishes food for thought. Through astronomy, art, natural history, chemistry, music, and mathematics, thought passes naturally from effect back to cause.

Academics of the right sort are requisite. Observation, invention, study, and original thought are expansive. They should promote the advancement of human mind out of itself to a consciousness that escapes mortality and finds peace.

Sensationalized education is deplorable. The mere dogma, the frightening speculations, and the nauseous fiction can be filtered out. Novels and movies remarkable only for their exaggerated pictures, unrealistic ideals, and models of rudeness, fill the viewer and reader with wrong tastes and attitudes. Commercialism is lowering the intellectual standard to accommodate the bank account and to meet a foolish demand for entertainment instead of for improvement. Incorrect views lower the standard of truth.

The power of human mind over its own body is not understood very well. Human beings have “made a mess of things,”[2] not realizing yet that knowledge can save from the dire effects of knowledge. If materialistic knowledge is power, it is not wisdom. Temporal knowledge is but a vain force.

Suffering can awaken human mind from its fleshly dream and therefore is better than the false pleasures which tend to perpetuate unsustainable dreams. Only sin brings death, for sin is the element of destruction.

“Be afraid of the One who can destroy both soul and body in hell,”[3] said Jesus. A careful study of this text shows that here the word soul means a false perception or temporal consciousness. The command was a warning to beware, not of human governments, Satan, nor of God, but of sin. Sin makes its own hell and goodness makes its own heaven. Sickness, sin, and downfall are not companions of Life or Truth. No law supports them. They have no relation to God wherewith to establish their power.

Instead of impressing on the mind forcible descriptions and medical details, delete them. Positive images, along with constructive and informative literature and movies will help rule disease out of human mind and abate and destroy sickness.

If you believe in and practice wrong knowingly, you can at once change your course and do right. Matter can make no opposition to right endeavors against sin or sickness, for matter can’t do anything on its own without mind. If you believe you have a disease, you can alter this wrong belief and action without hindrance from the body.

Mark 12: 18-31

And Sadducees came to [Jesus], who say that there is no resurrection. And they asked him a question, saying, 19 “Teacher, Moses wrote for us that if a man’s brother dies and leaves a wife, but leaves no child, the man must take the widow and raise up offspring for his brother. 20 There were seven brothers; the first took a wife, and when he died left no offspring. 21 And the second took her, and died, leaving no offspring. And the third likewise. 22 And the seven left no offspring. Last of all the woman also died. 23 In the resurrection, when they rise again, whose wife will she be? For the seven had her as wife.”

24 Jesus said to them, “Is this not the reason you are wrong, because you know neither the Scriptures nor the power of God? 25 For when they rise from the dead, they neither marry nor are given in marriage, but are like angels in heaven. 26 And as for the dead being raised, have you not read in the book of Moses, in the passage about the bush, how God spoke to him, saying, ‘I am the God of Abraham, and the God of Isaac, and the God of Jacob’? 27 He is not God of the dead, but of the living. You are quite wrong.”

28 And one of the scribes came up and heard them disputing with one another, and seeing that he answered them well, asked him, “Which commandment is the most important of all?” 29 Jesus answered, “The most important is, ‘Hear, O Israel: The Lord our God, the Lord is one. 30 And you shall love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your mind and with all your strength.’ 31 The second is this: ‘You shall love your neighbor as yourself.’ There is no other commandment greater than these.”

Wrong beliefs are destroyed by the law of God, which is the law of Life eternal instead of death, the law of harmony instead of disorder, the law of Spirit instead of the flesh.

Mortals have an imperfect understanding of spiritual being and its infinite range of thought. Eternal Life belongs to spiritual being. Never born and never dying, it is impossible for people under the government of God in eternal Science, to fall from their immortal status.

Through spiritual perception we can discern the heart of divinity and thereby begin to understand the generic terms person or individual. Our spirituality is not absorbed in God, and God’s person doesn’t become isolated or trapped in a vacuum. Our individuality goes on and on reflecting Life eternal. We each represent the totality of infinite Mind’s substance.

In divine Science, an individual is the true image of God. The divine nature was genuinely personified by Christ Jesus who shed light on this powerful concept of God. He shifted the people’s thought to experience something better than what they had been trained to think was right and normal. Jesus served to remove the stereotypical view of people as sinners, destined to be sick and dying. The Christ-like understanding of scientific being and divine healing includes a perfect Principle and idea―complete God and complete person―as the basis of thought and demonstration.

If person was once complete or perfect, but then lost his/her perfection, then the image of God was never known. The lost image is no image. The true likeness can’t be lost in divine reflection. Understanding this, Jesus said: “You shall be perfect, just as your Father in heaven is perfect.”[4]

Human perceptions transmit their own images and form offspring after human illusions; whereas God, Spirit, works spiritually, not materially. The brain is an electrical device unable to originate a human concept because electricity has no intelligence, no creative ability. Immortal ideas―pure, perfect, and enduring―are transmitted by the divine Mind through Science. Mind demands spiritual thoughts to the end that they produce harmonious results. Human mind tries to repeat the immortal ideas, but gets it wrong because it starts with its mortal self.

The study of divine Science helps eliminate the human mind’s faulty process. Reasoning that begins with imperfection will end with imperfection. Reasoning that begins with perfection will arrive at perfection. A sculptor can’t perfect contours and shapes while concentrating on an imperfect model. The painter can’t depict the features and appearance of Jesus while thinking about the character of Judas Iscariot.

The perceptions and realities of mortal thought either die or give way to the spiritual discovery of completeness and eternity. Through many generations, human beliefs reach diviner conceptions and the immortal model of God’s revelation is finally seen as the only true conception of being.

Science not only reveals reasonable possibilities, but also prompts human beings to discover what God has already done. You must trust your ability to experience goodness and to bring out better and higher results. Don’t become a sluggard. Don’t fear failure, but overcome it.

Illness, disease, and defeat proceeds from fear. A sick body evolves from sick thoughts. Debauchery comes from, and causes, hurtful physical and moral conditions.

Promiscuousness and self-centeredness are educated in mortal mind when human beings repeat the same thoughts over and over. This education is at the expense of spiritual growth. It is better to stop talking constantly about the body. It is better to stop expecting pleasure or pain from the body.

When we expect pleasure from the body, we get pain. When we look for life in the body, we find death. When we search for Truth or Spirit in material things, we find uncertainty. Now reverse this process. Look away from matter into Truth and Love, the Principle of all happiness, harmony, and immortality. Let your thought embrace the enduring, the honest, and the true, and you will bring these into your experience according to how often they occupy your thoughts.

We learn that the human mind affects health and happiness, so use this knowledge to benefit humanity. We can become preoccupied with helping others and forget our body and its complaints. We can become so focused on reaching a spiritual goal that pain is forgotten. It shows that pain is powerless in the presence of good works. After the September 11th, 2001 plane attacks on the Twin Towers in New York City, many people, especially firefighters, performed miraculous feats saving lives while oblivious to their own bodies.

Detach feelings from the body, or matter, which is only a type of human belief. Learn the meaning of God or good, and the nature of the immutable and immortal. Don’t worry when breaking away from mutating time and feelings, because you will not lose your sense of reality or your sense of identity. As you contemplate spiritual life, consciousness is being purified and groomed to experience the celestial.

We can forget the body while remembering good and the human race. Good compels us to solve the problem of being. Commitment to good increases our dependence on a spiritual God and shows a paramount necessity to be responsible to Truth and Love. Divine Science does not claim the perfection of God but ascribes to God the entire glory. By taking “off your old self with its practices,”[5] mortals are clothed “with immortality.”[6]
