Subject: God’s assignment

Golden text: Luke 22:28-30*

“You are those who have stayed with me in my trials, 29 and I assign to you, as my Father assigned to me, a kingdom, 30 that you may eat and drink at my table in my kingdom and sit on thrones judging the twelve tribes of Israel.

Genesis 17:9-11

And God said to Abraham, “As for you, you shall keep my covenant, you and your offspring after you throughout their generations. 10 This is my covenant, which you shall keep, between me and you and your offspring after you: Every male among you shall be circumcised. 11 You shall be circumcised in the flesh of your foreskins, and it shall be a sign of the covenant between me and you.

The infinite never began and it will never end. Mind and its formations can never be annihilated. God’s child is not on a roller coaster, reeling between good and evil, joy and sorrow, health and sickness, endurance and weakness. Life and its faculties are not measured by calendars. The perfect and spiritual are the eternal likeness of their Maker. We aren’t struggling to rise from an imperfect origin to a perfect Spirit. The stream doesn’t rise higher than its source.

Measuring life by solar years steals from our prime and gives ugliness to age. The radiant sun of virtue and truth coexists with being. Manhood and womanhood is its eternal noon, undimmed by a declining sun. As the physical and material, the transient sense of beauty fades, the radiance of Spirit illumines spiritual sense with bright and imperishable glories.

Don’t keep records of the aging process. Chronological data is no part of the vast forever. Charts of births, stages, and deaths are so many conspiracies against manhood and womanhood. Measuring and limiting all that is good and beautiful is an age-old habit. If not for that routine, we would enjoy our advanced years and still be vigorous, light-hearted, and full of promise. Governed by spiritual Mind, we are always graceful and noble. Each succeeding year unfolds wisdom, beauty, and holiness.

Life is eternal. We should find this out and begin the demonstration thereof. Life and goodness are spiritual. Let us then shape our views of existence into loveliness, renewal, and consistency, rather than into debility and loss.

Acute and chronic beliefs reproduce their own types. Acute beliefs of physical life come later, and are not as disastrous as chronic beliefs.

Tradition, education, and fashion form the illusive standards of human beings. Spirituality, exempt from decline or decay, has a glory of its own—the radiance of Soul. We can be models of spiritual sense. Our spirituality is designed by complete Mind and reflects those higher conceptions of loveliness which transcend all false conceptions.

Sculptors turn from the marble to their model in order to perfect their conception. We are all sculptors working at various forms, molding and chiseling thought. What is the model before human mind? Is it stupidity, joy, depression, suffering? Have you accepted the human model? Are you reproducing it? Then you are haunted in your work by vicious sculptors and hideous forms. Don’t you hear from all humankind of the imperfect model? The world is continually holding it before your observation. The result is that you are liable to follow those ruinous prototypes, limit your lifework, and adopt into your experience the angular outlines and deformity of mortal models.

To remedy this, we must first turn our attention in the right direction and then walk that way. We must form true God-like models in thought and look at them continually or we shall never carve them out in grand and noble lives. Allow unselfishness, goodness, mercy, justice, health, holiness, and love to control your mind and body. As the kingdom of heaven is found within our consciousness, then sin, disease, and loss will diminish until they finally disappear.

John 7:14-24

About the middle of the feast Jesus went up into the temple and began teaching. 15 The Jews therefore marveled, saying, “How is it that this man has learning, when he has never studied?” 16 So Jesus answered them, “My teaching is not mine, but his who sent me. 17 If anyone’s will is to do God’s will, he will know whether the teaching is from God or whether I am speaking on my own authority. 18 The one who speaks on his own authority seeks his own glory; but the one who seeks the glory of him who sent him is true, and in him there is no falsehood. 19 Has not Moses given you the law? Yet none of you keeps the law. Why do you seek to kill me?” 20 The crowd answered, “You have a demon! Who is seeking to kill you?” 21 Jesus answered them, “I did one work, and you all marvel at it. 22 Moses gave you circumcision (not that it is from Moses, but from the fathers), and you circumcise a man on the Sabbath. 23 If on the Sabbath a man receives circumcision, so that the law of Moses may not be broken, are you angry with me because on the Sabbath I made a man’s whole body well? 24 Do not judge by appearances, but judge with right judgment.”

21st Century Science and Health

The healing power of Truth is no longer random, but widely practiced as an inherent, ongoing Science. Spiritual healing is the good news constantly appearing, and its main purpose isn’t physical healing but “on earth peace among those whom he favors!”[1] The appearance of good, as was promised by Jesus, establishes the divine system among humanity. Now, as in earlier times, signs and wonders are meant to elucidate the divine origin and to substantiate the reality of Truth—to attest to the higher mission of Science to take away the sins of the world.

In divine Science mere opinion is worthless. Sneers at the word Science, when applied to Christianity, can’t prevent spirituality from being scientific.  Spirituality is based on a divine Principle, demonstrated according to a given rule, and open to proof. The facts are so numerous in support of divine Science that it can’t be overthrown by misrepresentations and denunciations. Paul warns about “quarreling over opinions.”[2] This is an era when we live and think in terms of science, therefore proof and demonstration, instead of opinion and dogma, are called upon to support spirituality, “making wise the simple.”[3]

Unfounded attacks on scientific Mind-healing are denials of Truth and it can be sorrowfully seen that those denials produce sad effects on the sick. Finding fault with divine Science is done presumptuously, in the face of Bible history, and it defies the direct instruction of Jesus, “Go into all the world and preach the good news to all creation.”[4] To this instruction was added the promise that students will drive out evils and heal the sick. Jesus called upon the seventy-two[5] disciples, as well as the twelve, to heal the sick in any town where they should be kindly received.

If Godlike Christianity is not scientific, and Science is not of God, then there is no unified law, and truth becomes an accident. Shall it be denied that a system which works according to Scriptures has Scriptural authority?

Divine Science awakens the sinner, rehabilitates the self-deceived, and releases from pain the helpless sufferer. Science speaks the words of Truth to those who are lost and they answer with rejoicing. It causes the deaf to hear, the lame to walk, and the blind to see.

I Corinthians 7:17-21

Only let each person lead the life that the Lord has assigned to him, and to which God has called him. This is my rule in all the churches. 18 Was anyone at the time of his call already circumcised? Let him not seek to remove the marks of circumcision. Was anyone at the time of his call uncircumcised? Let him not seek circumcision. 19 For neither circumcision counts for anything nor uncircumcision, but keeping the commandments of God. 20 Each one should remain in the condition in which he was called.

21st Century Science and Health

In the Science of spirituality, Mind—omnipotence—has all-power. Divine Mind, God assigns sure rewards to spiritual righteousness and shows that matter cannot heal or make sick, create or destroy.

A promise of joy was anticipated while walking wearily through the desert of human hopes. Even so now, the spiritual idea will guide all right desires from limited perception to Soul perception, to the glory prepared for us who love God. Science is the guide, never pausing but leading to divine thoughts with a pillar of cloud by day and fire by night. In War and Peace, Leo Tolstoy depicts the guiding presence found in consciousness. The main character, Pierre Bezúkhov, “felt like a man who, after straining his eyes to peer into the remote distance, finds what he was seeking at his very feet. All his life he had been looking over the heads of those around him, while he had only to look before him without straining his eyes…He had learned to see the great, the eternal, the infinite in everything…And the closer he looked, the happier and more serene he was.”[6]

We disown the Almighty when we assign spiritual power to matter.

When the human element in him resisted the divine, Jesus surrendered: “Not my will, but yours be done”[7]—that is, let not the flesh but the Spirit be represented in me. This is the new understanding of spiritual Love. It gives all for Christ, Truth. It blesses its enemies, heals the sick, drives out wrongdoing, raises the dead from trespasses, and preaches the good news to humble hearts.

Are you drinking his cup? Have you shared the persecutions that attend a new and higher understanding of God? Are you willing to take up the cross and leave all for the Christ-principle? Are you eating bread and drinking wine to honor Jesus, or just to remember him for a few minutes? Don’t assign the inspiration of Eucharist to an anesthetic ritual. Instead, show that Truth is understood, by driving out erroneous conceptions and making our bodies “holy and pleasing to God”?[8] If Christ, Truth, has come to us in demonstration, no other sign of remembrance is requisite. Demonstration is Immanuel or “God with us.”[9] If a friend is with us, why do we need memorials of that friend?

If everyone who ate bread and drank of Jesus’ cup really commemorated his sufferings, they would have revolutionized the world. If all who seek Jesus’ remembrance through material symbols would take up the cross, heal the sick, cast out evils, and preach Christ, Truth, to the receptive thought, they will bring in the millennium.

Scripture informs us that “with God all things are possible”[10]—all good is possible to Spirit. Prevalent theories practically deny this and make healing possible only through human beings, however, these theories are not true, because spiritual good is possible to God. Christianity is not false, but religions which contradict its Principle are false.

At certain times, we see spirituality again demonstrating the power of divine Principle, as it did over twenty centuries ago, by healing the sick. Jesus never taught that drugs, food, air, and exercise could make people healthy. Jesus also didn’t teach or practice that drugs, food, air, and exercise could destroy human life. Harmony is assigned to Mind, not to matter/energy.

Voices of solemn import are heard in the sacred sanctuary of Truth. Are we heeding these voices? If so, we are burying error and resurrecting to spiritual life.
