Subject: God

Golden text: Jeremiah 6:16*

Thus says the Lord: “Stand by the roads, and look, and ask for the ancient paths, where the good way is; and walk in it, and find rest for your souls.

Leviticus 26:1-22

 “You shall not make idols for yourselves or erect an image or pillar, and you shall not set up a figured stone in your land to bow down to it, for I am the Lord your God. You shall keep my Sabbaths and reverence my sanctuary: I am the Lord. “If you walk in my statutes and observe my commandments and do them, then I will give you your rains in their season, and the land shall yield its increase, and the trees of the field shall yield their fruit. Your threshing shall last to the time of the grape harvest, and the grape harvest shall last to the time for sowing. And you shall eat your bread to the full and dwell in your land securely. I will give peace in the land, and you shall lie down, and none shall make you afraid. And I will remove harmful beasts from the land, and the sword shall not go through your land. You shall chase your enemies, and they shall fall before you by the sword. Five of you shall chase a hundred, and a hundred of you shall chase ten thousand, and your enemies shall fall before you by the sword. I will turn to you and make you fruitful and multiply you and will confirm my covenant with you. 10 You shall eat old store long kept, and you shall clear out the old to make way for the new. 11 I will make my dwelling among you, and my soul shall not abhor you. 12 And I will walk among you and will be your God, and you shall be my people. 13 I am the Lord your God, who brought you out of the land of Egypt, that you should not be their slaves. And I have broken the bars of your yoke and made you walk erect.

14 “But if you will not listen to me and will not do all these commandments, 15 if you spurn my statutes, and if your soul abhors my rules, so that you will not do all my commandments, but break my covenant, 16 then I will do this to you: I will visit you with panic, with wasting disease and fever that consume the eyes and make the heart ache. And you shall sow your seed in vain, for your enemies shall eat it. 17 I will set my face against you, and you shall be struck down before your enemies. Those who hate you shall rule over you, and you shall flee when none pursues you. 18 And if in spite of this you will not listen to me, then I will discipline you again sevenfold for your sins, 19 and I will break the pride of your power, and I will make your heavens like iron and your earth like bronze. 20 And your strength shall be spent in vain, for your land shall not yield its increase, and the trees of the land shall not yield their fruit.

21 “Then if you walk contrary to me and will not listen to me, I will continue striking you, sevenfold for your sins. 22 And I will let loose the wild beasts against you, which shall bereave you of your children and destroy your livestock and make you few in number, so that your roads shall be deserted.

We must be willing to surrender mortal thoughts that we may walk securely on the only practical road to immortality. Prayer can’t change the unalterable Truth, nor can prayer alone give us an understanding of Truth. Prayer, attached to a sincere intent to know and do God’s will, brings us into all Truth. Prayer is best expressed in thought and in life.

What the physical senses tell us often reverses or rearranges the real Science of being. The shuffling assigns seeming authority to sin, sickness, and death. But the great facts of Life rightly understood, defeat this triad of errors, contradict their false witnesses, and reveal the power of heaven—the actual authority of harmony on earth. The demonstrations of Jesus exposed pragmatically the pattern of harmony, yet we are trained to believe that the human mind is secondary to mortal body and that certain sections of matter, such as brain and nerves, are put in charge of pain and pleasure. Sadly, this derangement looks to matter to report to the mind the status of happiness or misery.

There are many proofs of the illusion of physical sense. For example, when driving on the highway, the paved road ahead sometimes appears to have water on it. The barometer points to fair weather during drenching rain and under murky clouds. What about the body? Physical senses tell us the body is solid, but the body isn’t solid. Cosmic rays, neutrinos, radio and TV waves are zinging through the body as if it is transparent. The examples of illusive, unreliable appearances could go on. Life teaches us to correct what physical senses and human imprints claim as fact.

Matthew 20:29-34

 And as they went out of Jericho, a great crowd followed [Jesus]. 30 And behold, there were two blind men sitting by the roadside, and when they heard that Jesus was passing by, they cried out, “Lord, have mercy on us, Son of David!” 31 The crowd rebuked them, telling them to be silent, but they cried out all the more, “Lord, have mercy on us, Son of David!” 32 And stopping, Jesus called them and said, “What do you want me to do for you?” 33 They said to him, “Lord, let our eyes be opened.” 34 And Jesus in pity touched their eyes, and immediately they recovered their sight and followed him.

Jesus charted out the path for others. He uncovered Christ, the spiritual idea of divine Love. To those buried in the belief of sin and self, living only for fleshly pleasure or gratification, he said, “You have eyes: can you not see? You have ears: can you not hear?”[1]  Jesus taught that the mortal senses shut out Truth and its healing power. By employing our spiritual senses, we change for the better and feel regenerated.

All Science is divine. Human thought never devised a tiny bit of true being. Human belief looks for and interprets in its own way the echo of Spirit and seems to have reversed it and repeated it materially. The human mind never produces a real tone or sends forth a positive sound.

Incompatible questions regarding divine Science on one hand and popular theology on the other are: Should Science explain cause and effect as both natural and spiritual? Should all that is beyond the recognition of the physical senses be called supernatural and be left at the mercy of speculation?

I have set forth divine Science and its application to the treatment of disease as it was discovered. I have demonstrated through Mind, the effects of Truth on the health, longevity, and morals of human beings. I have found nothing in ancient or in modern systems on which to found my discovery except the teachings and demonstrations of Christ Jesus and the lives of prophets and apostles. I used the Bible as my only authority and believe this one guide is likened to “Small is the gate and narrow the road,”[2]to Truth.

If Christendom resists my application of the word Science to Christianity or questions my use of the word Science, I will not therefore lose faith in Christianity, nor will Christianity lose its hold on me. If God, the All-in-all, be the creator of the spiritual universe, including individuals, then everything entitled to a classification as truth or Science, must be comprised in a knowledge or understanding of God. There can be nothing beyond illimitable divinity.

The terms divine Science, spiritual Science, metaphysical Science, the Science of Truth and Love, Christian Science, or Science alone, are employed interchangeably according to the requirements of the context. These synonymous terms stand for everything relating to God, the infinite, supreme, eternal Mind. It may be said, however, that the term Christian Science relates especially to Science as applied to humanity. Divine Science reveals God, not as the author of sin, sickness, and death, but as Principle, Supreme Being, Mind, exempt from all evil. It teaches that materialism or limitation is the falsity, not the fact, of existence. Nerves, brain, stomach, lungs, and so forth, have—as matter—no intelligence, life, or sensation.

Science doesn’t proceed from that which is relative and uncertain, as all truth proceeds from the divine Mind. Matter is not a lawgiver. Truth is not a law of matter and is not mortal. Spiritual Science comes from divine Mind and is the only means of rightly interpreting God, Spirit, substance. Science has a Godlike, not humanlike, origin. It is a divine affirmation, the Counselor guiding “into all truth.”[3]

Isaiah 49:8, 11-13

Thus says the Lord:
“In a time of favor I have answered you;
    in a day of salvation I have helped you;
I will keep you and give you
    as a covenant to the people,
to establish the land,
    to apportion the desolate heritages,

I will make all my mountains a road,
    and my highways shall be raised up.
12 Behold, these shall come from afar,
    and behold, these from the north and from the west,
    and these from the land of Syene.”

13 Sing for joy, O heavens, and exult, O earth;
    break forth, O mountains, into singing!
For the Lord has comforted his people
    and will have compassion on his afflicted.

You can rejoice in secret beauty and abundance, hidden from worldliness but known to God. Constant prayer spiritualizes thoughts and causes the mortal selfhood to be less demanding and distracting. A mindful practice has the ear and right hand of omnipotence and assuredly calls upon infinite blessings.

If you wish to discover the spiritual fact, then mentally perceive the limited situation you are in. It makes no difference whether the situation agrees or disagrees with your preconceptions.

Pantheism and nature worship may be defined as a belief in the intelligence of matter—a mindset which Science overthrows, even if there is “great distress, unequaled from the beginning of the world.”[4] Earth will echo the cry, “Have you [Truth] come here to torture us before the appointed time?”[5]  Mysticism, agnosticism, atheism, theosophy, neopaganism, and other systems of disbelief are antagonistic to true being and are fatal to the demonstration of Being.

Study metaphysics rather than physics and look deep into realism, instead of only accepting the superficial, illusive sense of things. Be elevated in thought in every situation. Can we gather peaches from a pine tree or learn from disorder the order of being? Continue to recognize the nothingness of illusions—stay on the path Science is walking—and the ingrained illusions of human beings will be replaced with reality.

The body may object to the attitude that pays little attention to food. The sinner squirms when seeing that the system taught in this book requires obedience to the demands of God. The narrow-minded intellect rankles by the constant need to be responsible to infinite Mind. The licentious disposition is discouraged over its meager spiritual prospects. When the people are invited to the wedding banquet, the excuses come. One person has a machine to fix, others have errands to run or businesses to attend,[6] and therefore they can’t approve and accept.

It is vain to speak of divine Science dishonestly when you can demonstrate the realness of Science by destroying disorder. It is unwise to doubt if reality is in perfect harmony with God, divine Principle.

Science, when understood and demonstrated, will destroy disorder. From the premise that God is omnipotent, comes the conclusion that good has all-power.
