Golden text: Psalms 148:3-6*

Praise him, sun and moon, praise him, all you shining stars! Praise him, you highest heavens, and you waters above the heavens! Let them praise the name of the Lord! For he commanded and they were created. And he established them forever and ever; he gave a decree, and it shall not pass away.

Numbers 20:1-21

And the people of Israel, the whole congregation, came into the wilderness of Zin in the first month, and the people stayed in Kadesh. And Miriam died there and was buried there.

Now there was no water for the congregation. And they assembled themselves together against Moses and against Aaron. And the people quarreled with Moses and said, “Would that we had perished when our brothers perished before the Lord! Why have you brought the assembly of the Lord into this wilderness, that we should die here, both we and our cattle? And why have you made us come up out of Egypt to bring us to this evil place? It is no place for grain or figs or vines or pomegranates, and there is no water to drink.” Then Moses and Aaron went from the presence of the assembly to the entrance of the tent of meeting and fell on their faces. And the glory of the Lord appeared to them, and the Lord spoke to Moses, saying, “Take the staff, and assemble the congregation, you and Aaron your brother, and tell the rock before their eyes to yield its water. So you shall bring water out of the rock for them and give drink to the congregation and their cattle.” And Moses took the staff from before the Lord, as he commanded him.

10 Then Moses and Aaron gathered the assembly together before the rock, and he said to them, “Hear now, you rebels: shall we bring water for you out of this rock?” 11 And Moses lifted up his hand and struck the rock with his staff twice, and water came out abundantly, and the congregation drank, and their livestock. 12 And the Lord said to Moses and Aaron, “Because you did not believe in me, to uphold me as holy in the eyes of the people of Israel, therefore you shall not bring this assembly into the land that I have given them.” 13 These are the waters of Meribah,[a] where the people of Israel quarreled with the Lord, and through them he showed himself holy.

14 Moses sent messengers from Kadesh to the king of Edom: “Thus says your brother Israel: You know all the hardship that we have met: 15 how our fathers went down to Egypt, and we lived in Egypt a long time. And the Egyptians dealt harshly with us and our fathers. 16 And when we cried to the Lord, he heard our voice and sent an angel and brought us out of Egypt. And here we are in Kadesh, a city on the edge of your territory. 17 Please let us pass through your land. We will not pass through field or vineyard, or drink water from a well. We will go along the King’s Highway. We will not turn aside to the right hand or to the left until we have passed through your territory.” 18 But Edom said to him, “You shall not pass through, lest I come out with the sword against you.” 19 And the people of Israel said to him, “We will go up by the highway, and if we drink of your water, I and my livestock, then I will pay for it. Let me only pass through on foot, nothing more.” 20 But he said, “You shall not pass through.” And Edom came out against them with a large army and with a strong force. 21 Thus Edom refused to give Israel passage through his territory, so Israel turned away from him.

In spiritual knowledge, we are the offspring of Spirit, Mind. The beautiful, whole, and pure constitute our ancestry. Our origin is not like that of mortals, programmed to pass through human stages prior to reaching intelligence. Spirit is our primordial and ultimate source of being. God is our Father-Mother, and Life is the law of our being.

Mind-science has nothing to do with sitting-on-the-fence of impertinent knowledge, because Mind-science is of God and demonstrates the divine Principle, working out the purposes of good only. The maximum of good is the infinite God and God’s idea, the All-in-all. Anything unlike the conscious infinite is a suggested lie.

As named in Christian Science, mesmerism or crowd thinking is the specific term for error, or human mortal mind. It comes from the false belief that mind is inside it’s thought (matter), and is both evil and good, or that evil is as real as good and more powerful. This penchant to live out a mortal life has not one quality of Truth and is either ignorant or malicious. The malicious forms of hypnotic suggestions end in moral idiocy. The truths of immortal Mind annihilate the human mind’s weak and stupid tendencies, which wander in circles like blind bugs flying into artificial lights and getting burned.

In reality there is no human mortal mind and consequently no transfer of temporal thoughts and will-powers. Life and being are of God. No harm can occur in the realm of Science where scientific, eternal thoughts pass from God to us.

When Christian Science and impulsive crowd thinking are comprehended, as they will be at no distant date, it will be seen why honest, hardworking people are unfairly persecuted and undermined by wolves in sheep’s clothing.[1]

Arthur Schopenhauer[2] has been credited to say, “All truth passes through three stages. First, it is ridiculed. Second, it is violently opposed. Third, it is accepted as being self-evident.” Or, in words attributed to George Bernard Shaw, [3] “All great truths begin as blasphemies.”

Divine Science goes to the bottom of mental action.

Every valley of materialism must be exalted and every mountain of selfishness must be brought low, that the highway of our God may be prepared in Science. The offspring of heavenly-minded parents inherit more intellect, better balanced minds, and more reliable health.

If unfortunate circumstances places promising children in the arms of gross parents, often these beautiful children wither like tropical flowers born in the snowy Alps. If by chance those children live to become parents themselves, they may pass along to their children the grosser traits of what they were taught when growing up. Society can ask: What noble ambition can inspire the child to overcome the bad traits? What hope of happiness can be gained to head-off reducing the child to a hopeless wreck?

Raising children is a great responsibility, a more solemn trust than climbing the corporate ladder or accumulating material possessions. Take immense care not to transmit to children what is unworthy of perpetuity.

To advance humankind, the development of mortals must improve.

Matthew 8:28-34

And when he came to the other side, to the country of the Gadarenes, two demon-possessedmen met him, coming out of the tombs, so fierce that no one could pass that way. 29 And behold, they cried out, “What have you to do with us, O Son of God? Have you come here to torment us before the time?” 30 Now a herd of many pigs was feeding at some distance from them. 31 And the demons begged him, saying, “If you cast us out, send us away into the herd of pigs.” 32 And he said to them, “Go.” So they came out and went into the pigs, and behold, the whole herd rushed down the steep bank into the sea and drowned in the waters. 33 The herdsmen fled, and going into the city they told everything, especially what had happened to the demon-possessed men. 34 And behold, all the city came out to meet Jesus, and when they saw him, they begged him to leave their region.

Now is the time for temporary pains and pleasures to pass away, for both are unreal. To break this earthly spell, human beings must get the true idea and divine Principle of all that really exists. The understanding of what governs the universe harmoniously is comprehended slowly and it comes with doubts and disappointments, as well as successes.

We resist Spirit because our learned behaviors come with the belief that temporal systems benefit us. When we admit that short-term benefits provide no lasting answer, we turn toward the eternal Spirit. Remove error from thought and it will not appear in effect. The advanced thinker will perceive and advocate the scope and tendency of eternal means. Other people will say, “That’s enough for now! You may leave. When I find it convenient, I will send for you.”[4]

Divine Science adjusts the circumstances as Jesus adjusted them. While there is sin, there is penalty. Science removes the penalty only by first removing the sin that incurs the penalty. My interpretation of divine pardon is that God destroys sin. It is foolish to think our own sins will be less sinful if we attack someone else who we believe is sinful. Did the excommunication of Martin Luther[5] make the hypocrisy of his enemies less criminal?

Was it fair for Jesus to suffer? No, but it was inevitable; otherwise he could not have shown us the way and the power of Truth. Remember though, another person’s suffering can’t lessen our own liability. If a career as great and good as that of Jesus could not avoid a felon’s fate, then students of Truth must endure without complaining. Rejoice, and enter into companionship with Christ through the triumphal arc of Truth and Love.

Our heavenly Parent, divine Love, did not demand us to worship the personality of Jesus. The phrase “serving the Lord” doesn’t mean public worship. Serving the Lord means work. It is essential to follow the example of the Teacher and his apostles.

The nature of spirituality is peaceful and blessed. To enter the realm of Spirit, our anchor of hope must be thrown past the veil of matter into the Shekinah that Jesus showed us. This advance beyond superficial thinking comes through the joys and triumphs of the righteous as well as through their sorrows and afflictions. We must leave mortal impressions of fleshly being and advance into immortal impressions of spiritual being.

The God-inspired walk calmly on though with aching feet. Pampered hypocrites may ride on easy street here, but they can’t forever break the Golden Rule[6] and escape the penalty due. We reap what we sow.

Jesus’ earthly mission was fulfilled with proofs of Truth, Life, and Love, by driving out error and healing the sick. Unfortunately, in the Christian church, the demonstration of divine healing was lost about three centuries after Jesus’ resurrection. Ancient and modern schools of philosophy, medicine, and theology don’t teach or demonstrate the healing of divine Science.

Jesus foresaw that the Science of Truth would be disregarded before it was understood. His foreknowing wasn’t an obstacle. He completed his God-mission and then sat down at the right hand of God. Jesus’ apostles still went about, moving from city to city doing good deeds although they were envied, hated, and stoned. Jesus’s teachings were scoffed by religious elders because the teachings demanded more than the officials were willing to practice. It was enough for the elders to believe in a national Deity; but that belief, from their time to ours, has never made a disciple who could cast out evils and heal the sick.

From divine and scientific points of view, Jesus proved God is Love. The opposite insistence that God is a mighty potentate who loves and hates is only the theology of a dualistic God, which gives no hint of the unchanging love of God.

The prevalent belief in death has no advantage. It is unable to make Life or Truth apparent. Death will eventually be found to be a human dream, which comes in darkness and disappears with the light.

Only as the mortal, false mind yields to God or spiritual Mind, is our identity found in the image of Love.

What is termed disease does not exist in spiritual Mind. Disease is neither mind nor matter. The belief of sin, which has grown terrible in strength and influence, is an unconscious error in the beginning. Negativity is like an undeveloped thought with no motive, but afterward it controls human beings. Infatuation, self-destructive appetites, dishonesty, envy, hatred, and revenge ripen into action, only to pass from shame and despair to their final self-punishment.
