Golden text: Philippians 1:15-18*
Some indeed preach Christ from envy and rivalry, but others from good will. 16 The latter do it out of love, knowing that I am put here for the defense of the gospel. 17 The former proclaim Christ out of selfish ambition, not sincerely but thinking to afflict me in my imprisonment. 18 What then? Only that in every way, whether in pretense or in truth, Christ is proclaimed, and in that I rejoice.
Paul, a servant of Christ Jesus, called to be an apostle, set apart for the gospel of God, 2 which he promised beforehand through his prophets in the holy Scriptures, 3 concerning his Son, who was descended from David according to the flesh 4 and was declared to be the Son of God in power according to the Spirit of holiness by his resurrection from the dead, Jesus Christ our Lord, 5 through whom we have received grace and apostleship to bring about the obedience of faith for the sake of his name among all the nations, 6 including you who are called to belong to Jesus Christ,
7 To all those in Rome who are loved by God and called to be saints:
Grace to you and peace from God our Father and the Lord Jesus Christ.
8 First, I thank my God through Jesus Christ for all of you, because your faith is proclaimed in all the world. 9 For God is my witness, whom I serve with my spirit in the gospel of his Son, that without ceasing I mention you 10 always in my prayers, asking that somehow by God’s will I may now at last succeed in coming to you. 11 For I long to see you, that I may impart to you some spiritual gift to strengthen you— 12 that is, that we may be mutually encouraged by each other’s faith, both yours and mine. 13 I do not want you to be unaware, brothers, that I have often intended to come to you (but thus far have been prevented), in order that I may reap some harvest among you as well as among the rest of the Gentiles. 14 I am under obligation both to Greeks and to barbarians, both to the wise and to the foolish. 15 So I am eager to preach the gospel to you also who are in Rome.
16 For I am not ashamed of the gospel, for it is the power of God for salvation to everyone who believes, to the Jew first and also to the Greek. 17 For in it the righteousness of God is revealed from faith for faith, as it is written, “The righteous shall live by faith.”
18 For the wrath of God is revealed from heaven against all ungodliness and unrighteousness of men, who by their unrighteousness suppress the truth. 19 For what can be known about God is plain to them, because God has shown it to them. 20 For his invisible attributes, namely, his eternal power and divine nature, have been clearly perceived, ever since the creation of the world, in the things that have been made.
21st Century Science and Health**
It is constructive for physicians, therapists, and practitioners to know and act on the truth that Mind is existent. Healers should not take the position that matter is the only cause.
Spirituality is again demonstrating the Life that is Truth, and the Truth that is Life by the apostolic work of defeating error and healing the sick. Earth has no repayment for the persecutions which attend a new step in Christianity. The spiritual recompense of the persecuted is assured in the elevation of existence above the disorder and in the gift of divine Love.
The prophet of today sees in the mental horizon the signs of these times, the reappearance of Christianity’s essence which heals the sick and destroys error. No other sign will be given. Body can’t be saved except through Mind. The Science of Christianity is misinterpreted by a material age, because brain imprints and physical sense can’t comprehend Spirit. The healing influence of Spirit is discerned by spiritual sense. Creeds, doctrines, and human hypotheses do not express Christian Science; much less can they demonstrate it.
Beyond the frail premises of human beliefs, above the loosening clutches of human policies, the demonstration of spiritual Mind-healing stands a revealed and practical Science. Throughout all time and space, scientific demonstration is imperative as Christ’s revelation of Truth, of Life, and of Love, remaining inviolate for humanity to understand and to practice.
Physicians whom the sick employ in their helplessness should be models of integrity. They should be wise spiritual guides to health and hope. To the frightened patient on the brink of death, physicians can be prepared to share an understanding of the Truth which is Life and perpetuates being. When the soul is willing and the flesh is weak, the patient may be willing to plant their feet on the rock of the true idea of spiritual power.
Clergy, chaplains, and spiritual leaders who observe the world should advance the standard of Truth. They should inspire listeners to love grappling with a new right idea and broadening their views. Love of spirituality, rather than love of popularity, should stimulate work and progress. Truth should emanate from the pulpit, but never be strangled there. A special privilege is commissioned in the ministry. How will it be used? Sacredly, in the interests of humanity, not of self or sect.
Spiritual leaders should pursue the dignity of God’s laws rather than pursue a position of church power. Inferior motives induce attacks on individuals who only repeat Christ’s teachings but don’t live them.
Humanity is harmonious when governed by Soul. This is why it is so important to understand the truth of being, which reveals the laws of spiritual existence.
[Jesus said]“I can do nothing on my own. As I hear, I judge, and my judgment is just, because I seek not my own will but the will of him who sent me. 31 If I alone bear witness about myself, my testimony is not true. 32 There is another who bears witness about me, and I know that the testimony that he bears about me is true. 33 You sent to John, and he has borne witness to the truth.
21st Century Science and Health
The lack of spiritual power in today’s demonstrations of popular Christianity does not put to silence the labor of the centuries. Spiritual, not material consciousness is needed. Men and women, delivered from conflict, disease, and destruction will epitomize the true likeness of God’s image.
Religious and medical systems treat physical pains and pleasures as if they are normal, but Jesus rebuked the suffering from any such cause or effect. The epoch approaches when true religion will be built on the understanding of the truth of being. However, people are slow to understand truth because they are obsessed with fashion, pride, bodies, and opinions. These fixations make us weary and old because it goes against our higher nature. At some point, we will break through the fleeting and false and learn how Spirit, the great architect, has created us in Science.
All we correctly know of Spirit comes from God, divine Principle, and is learned through Truth and divine Science. If this Science has been thoroughly taken in and properly digested, we can know the truth more accurately than the astronomer can detect a nebula or calculate an eclipse. Scientific Mind-reading greatly differs from clairvoyance, psychics, or extrasensory perception (ESP). The reading of divine Mind is the illumination of spiritual understanding. Enlightened understanding demonstrates the capacity of Soul, not the capacity of human imprints. Soul-sense comes to the human mind as the human mind yields to divine Mind.
Spirit based intuition reveals whatever constitutes and perpetuates harmony, enabling one to do good, but not evil. You will reach the perfect Science of healing when you are able to read the human mind intuitively and discern the error you would destroy. The Samaritan woman said: “Come out and see the man who told me everything I’ve ever done! Can this be Christ?”
The truth of Mind shows conclusively how it is that matter seems to be, but is not. Divine Science, rising above physical theories, excludes matter, resolves things into thoughts, and replaces the objects of physical sense with spiritual ideas.
For this revelation, I introduced the term CHRISTIAN SCIENCE to designate the scientific system of divine healing. The revelation consists of two parts:
1. The discovery of this divine Science of Mind-healing, through a spiritual sense of Scriptures and through the teachings of the Counselor, as promised by Jesus.
2. The proof, by present-day demonstration, that the miracles of Jesus did not specially belong to a privileged few or at a time now ended. Miracles illustrate an ever-operative divine Principle which indicates the eternality of the scientific order and continuity of being.
Whoever reaches the understanding of divine Science in its proper significance will perform the sudden cures of which it is capable. Nevertheless, this can be done only by facing and overcoming fears and mistaken thoughts, and following divine Spirit in our everyday experiences.
Science can heal the sick who are absent from their healers, as well as those present, since space is not an obstacle to Mind. Immortal Mind heals what eye has not seen. The spiritual ability to comprehend thought and to heal by the Truth-power is won only as we are found reflecting the divine nature. Self-glorification, arrogance, anger, and the like, are not found in Truth healing.
Hebrew prophets intuitively foretold important events. It has also been recorded that when Jesus was with his students he “knew their thoughts”—read them scientifically to discern and heal disease. Jesus admonished the lack of Mind-reading power when he said: “You hypocrites, you know how to decipher the look of earth and sky; how is it you cannot decipher the meaning of this era?”
Some people may have keen “supernatural” or “natural” physical senses, but humans need spiritual sense. Jesus knew the people to be wicked and adulterous, seeking the material more than the spiritual. He said: “You should have practiced the latter, without neglecting the former.” His jabs at materialist thoughts were sharp, but needed. Jesus never spared hypocrisy from its stern self-condemnation. Truth is the one cause and effect. Truth communicates itself but never imparts error.
