Subject: Spiritual sense
Golden text: I Corinthians 2:14*
The natural person does not accept the things of the Spirit of God, for they are folly to him, and he is not able to understand them because they are spiritually discerned.
I Kings 3:5-12, 16-28
At Gibeon the Lord appeared to Solomon in a dream by night, and God said, “Ask what I shall give you.” 6 And Solomon said, “You have shown great and steadfast love to your servant David my father, because he walked before you in faithfulness, in righteousness, and in uprightness of heart toward you. And you have kept for him this great and steadfast love and have given him a son to sit on his throne this day. 7 And now, O Lord my God, you have made your servant king in place of David my father, although I am but a little child. I do not know how to go out or come in. 8 And your servant is in the midst of your people whom you have chosen, a great people, too many to be numbered or counted for multitude. 9 Give your servant therefore an understanding mind to govern your people, that I may discern between good and evil, for who is able to govern this your great people?”
10 It pleased the Lord that Solomon had asked this. 11 And God said to him, “Because you have asked this, and have not asked for yourself long life or riches or the life of your enemies, but have asked for yourself understanding to discern what is right, 12 behold, I now do according to your word. Behold, I give you a wise and discerning mind, so that none like you has been before you and none like you shall arise after you.
16 Then two prostitutes came to the king and stood before him. 17 The one woman said, “Oh, my lord, this woman and I live in the same house, and I gave birth to a child while she was in the house. 18 Then on the third day after I gave birth, this woman also gave birth. And we were alone. There was no one else with us in the house; only we two were in the house. 19 And this woman’s son died in the night, because she lay on him. 20 And she arose at midnight and took my son from beside me, while your servant slept, and laid him at her breast, and laid her dead son at my breast. 21 When I rose in the morning to nurse my child, behold, he was dead. But when I looked at him closely in the morning, behold, he was not the child that I had borne.” 22 But the other woman said, “No, the living child is mine, and the dead child is yours.” The first said, “No, the dead child is yours, and the living child is mine.” Thus they spoke before the king.
23 Then the king said, “The one says, ‘This is my son that is alive, and your son is dead’; and the other says, ‘No; but your son is dead, and my son is the living one.’” 24 And the king said, “Bring me a sword.” So a sword was brought before the king. 25 And the king said, “Divide the living child in two, and give half to the one and half to the other.” 26 Then the woman whose son was alive said to the king, because her heart yearned for her son, “Oh, my lord, give her the living child, and by no means put him to death.” But the other said, “He shall be neither mine nor yours; divide him.” 27 Then the king answered and said, “Give the living child to the first woman, and by no means put him to death; she is his mother.” 28 And all Israel heard of the judgment that the king had rendered, and they stood in awe of the king, because they perceived that the wisdom of God was in him to do justice.

Spiritual perception is the discernment of spiritual good.
Students, who receive their knowledge of Mind-Science or metaphysical healing from a human teacher, may be mistaken in judgment and demonstration, but God cannot mistake. God selects for the highest service people who have advanced into such a condition that they know any perversion of the mission is impossible. The All-wise does not grant trusts upon the unworthy. When Love commissions a messenger, it is one who is spiritually near Soul. No person can misuse this mental power if they are taught of God to discern it.
If humanity is governed by the law of divine Mind, the body is obedient to everlasting Life and Truth and Love. The great mistake of human beings is to suppose that God’s image and likeness is both matter and Spirit, both good and evil.
If the decision were left to the physical senses, evil would appear to be the master of good and sickness the rule of existence.
Consciousness in the likeness of Truth is inevitably immortal. The grass withers and the flower fades, however, they reappear. Erase the figures which express numbers, silence the tones of music, give human persons to bacteria, and yet the producing, governing divine Principle lives on, in the case of people as truly as in the case of numbers and music. All this is true despite the laws of human mind which define people as mortal. Though the problematic definitions, resulting from limited perspectives, hide the harmony of Science, they can’t destroy the divine Principle of Science. In Science, our indestructibility depends upon God, good, and follows as a necessary consequence of the immortality of good.
Many years ago, I made a spiritual discovery, the scientific evidence of which has accumulated to prove that the divine Mind produces in us health, harmony, and spirituality. Gradually this evidence will gather momentum and clearness until it reaches its culmination of scientific statement and proof. Nothing is more depressing than to believe that there is a power opposite to God, or good. God never allows or gives strength to an opposing power used against divine self, against Life, health, harmony.
Every law of physics or the body supposed to govern people, is rendered null and void by the law of Life, God. Unaware of our God-given rights, we allow unjust decisions and make excuses for imperfection. Our educational systems are biased, expounding homogeny and marketing a resignation to poor choices. Become aware metaphysically. Be no more willing to suffer the illusion that you are sick or that some disease is developing in the system, than you are willing to suffer by giving into sinful temptations as if sin is necessary.
And he came to Nazareth, where he had been brought up. And as was his custom, he went to the synagogue on the Sabbath day, and he stood up to read. 17 And the scroll of the prophet Isaiah was given to him. He unrolled the scroll and found the place where it was written,
18 “The Spirit of the Lord is upon me,
because he has anointed me
to proclaim good news to the poor.
He has sent me to proclaim liberty to the captives
and recovering of sight to the blind,
to set at liberty those who are oppressed,
19 to proclaim the year of the Lord’s favor.”
20 And he rolled up the scroll and gave it back to the attendant and sat down. And the eyes of all in the synagogue were fixed on him. 21 And he began to say to them, “Today this Scripture has been fulfilled in your hearing.” 22 And all spoke well of him and marveled at the gracious words that were coming from his mouth. And they said, “Is not this Joseph’s son?” 23 And he said to them, “Doubtless you will quote to me this proverb, ‘“Physician, heal yourself.” What we have heard you did at Capernaum, do here in your hometown as well.’” 24 And he said, “Truly, I say to you, no prophet is acceptable in his hometown. 25 But in truth, I tell you, there were many widows in Israel in the days of Elijah, when the heavens were shut up three years and six months, and a great famine came over all the land, 26 and Elijah was sent to none of them but only to Zarephath, in the land of Sidon, to a woman who was a widow

The Scriptures plainly declare that unspiritual thoughts have harmful results. Even Jesus felt negative influences. It’s recorded that Jesus was unable to do mighty works in certain places because of “their unbelief” in Truth. Any human error is its own enemy and works against itself. It does nothing in the right direction and much in the wrong. If human mind is cherishing wrong ambitions and malicious purposes, it is not a healer but a procreator of disease and death.
Absorbed in mortal human selfhood, we discern and reflect faintly the substance of Life or Mind. Try this: disengage thought from a selfhood separate from the divine and discern your spiritual and eternal individuality. Release erroneous knowledge gained from the physical senses or anything attached to measurable material energy.
What establishes Life? Does Life begin with human mind or with divine Mind? Is Life sustained by material molecules or by Spirit? Certainly not by both, since flesh wars against Spirit and the flesh can take no cognizance of Spirit. At no point does the theory of mortal life resemble the scientific record of spiritual beings, as described in the first chapter of Genesis. Did God at first create one person unaided, but afterward require Adam or the union of the two sexes to produce more children? Did God then require In Vitro Fertilization to sustain the human family? No! God made and governs all.
Some critics think that Christian Scientists are deluded or in a vacuum, because they aspire to reveal anything unlike God, good, as unreal. For instance, a Christian apologist, attempting to interpret the teachings of divine Science, says of Christian Scientists, “Their religious worldview teaches that sickness and pain are an illusion; they do not exist. But this belief is valid only by rejecting the fact that truth corresponds to reality.” The fact that truth corresponds to reality is not rejected in Christian Science. Instead, Christian Science reveals that much of the reality before the human perceptions is not actually true, for example the earth isn’t a motionless solid mass, but consists of forces in constant motion. Truth, reality, has no unreality, no error; therefore, disbelief in error destroys error and leads to discernment of Truth.
We treat error through the understanding of Truth, because Truth is error’s antidote. Error is like a dream, and when a dream stops it is self-destroyed and the terror is over. Take pain. Many times over, pain disappears as dreams do. It may seem absurd to say pain is an illusion (dream), however, what else could it be? Human beings have forever been at odds when measuring pain levels. The same painful condition to one person isn’t even noticed by another person. More bizarre is the fact that pain to one human being is actually pleasure to another. Pain has even been proven to be an error on the physical level. When a supposedly pained human mind is distracted, unconscious, or drugged, where is the pain? Pain is an error, sometimes a terror. Error has no part of Truth and this is an antidote that removes terror.
Superstitions and a lack of knowledge within your own human framework must be expelled to make room for spiritual understanding. We cannot serve both the human and divine framework at the same time; but isn’t this what frail mortals are trying to do?
Spiritual Science presents unfoldment, not accumulation. Mind-science presents revelation, not big bang. There is no growth from material molecule to mind. Creation is the impartation of divine Mind. As human generation ceases, the unbroken links of eternal harmonious being will be discerned and person, not of the mortal flesh, but coexistent with God, will appear. The scientific fact that individuals and the universe are evolved from Spirit, and so are spiritual, is as fixed in divine Science as is the proof that mortals gain the experience of health only as they lose the sense of destruction and disease. Mortals can never understand God’s creation while believing that human beings are creators.
A badly trained ear, not appreciating harmony, thinks noisy melodrama is normal. So human perception, untrained to discern true happiness, thinks unhappiness is normal. Divine Science will correct the misperceptions and teach us life’s sweeter harmonies.
The godly thought impels a more exalted worship and self-discipline. Spiritual perception brings out the possibilities of being and destroys reliance on anything accept God. Action and thought were made to image forth our Maker.
We have a difficult time glimpsing God when we distracted by measurable, fluctuating energy. By adjusting the out-of-tune thinking and getting in tune with Truth, we then can perceive the divine image in some word or deed, which indicates the true idea—the supremacy and reality of good, the nothingness and unreality of evil.
Error in statement leads to error in action. The term “evil spirits” resists the fact that evil is not Spirit, for there is no evil in Spirit. Evil spirits or beliefs are removed by truth. As we advance spiritually, evil becomes more apparent and more obnoxious until it disappears in the reality of Spirit.
God is not the creator of an evil mind. Indeed, evil is not Mind. We must learn that evil is the awful deception and unreality of existence. Evil is not supreme; good is not helpless; nor are the so-called laws of matter primary and the law of Spirit secondary. Without these lessons, we lose sight of the perfect Source or divine Principle of spiritual selfhood.
