Subject: Strength

Golden text: Psalms 121: 1-2*

I look up to the mountains; does my strength come from mountains? No, my strength comes from God, who made heaven, and earth, and mountains.

Genesis 49:1-4

Jacob called his sons and said, “Gather around. I want to tell you what you can expect in the days to come.” Come together, listen sons of Jacob, listen to Israel your father. Reuben, you’re my firstborn, my strength, first proof of my manhood, at the top in honor and at the top in power, But like a bucket of water spilled, you’ll be at the top no more, Because you climbed into your father’s marriage bed, mounting that couch, and you defiled it.

Your influence for good depends on the weight you throw into the right scale. The good you do and embody gives you the only power obtainable. Evil is not power, but a mockery of strength, which ultimately betrays its weakness and falls, never to rise.

If a person is an alcoholic, a sex or drug addict, or has compulsive behavior, meet and destroy these errors with the truth of being. Point out to the person the suffering that comes with indulging in bad habits. Convince them that there is no real pleasure in false appetites. A depraved mind is manifest in a depraved body. Lust, malice, and all sorts of evil are diseased beliefs and you can destroy them only by destroying the wicked motives which produce them. If evil is overcome in the repentant human mind, while its effects remain on the individual, you can remove this disorder as God’s law if fulfilled and reformation cancels the crime. The healthy sinner is the hardened sinner.

Reformation and moderation are results of mental healing, which cuts down “every tree that does not produce good fruit.”[1] The conviction that there is no real pleasure in thinking and acting against Life, Truth, and Love, is one of the most important points in the theology of Christian Science. Awaken the self-indulgent to this new and true view. Show the wrongdoer that destruction and negativity confers no pleasure, and this knowledge strengthens their moral courage and increases their ability to overcome evil and to love goodness.

Healing the sick and reforming the sinner is one and the same thing in Christ’s Science. Both cures require the same method and are inseparable in Truth. Hatred, envy, dishonesty, fear, and so forth, make human beings sick, and neither material medicine nor Mind can help them permanently, even in body, unless it makes them better mentally and so delivers them from their destroyers. The basic error is human mind. Hatred ignites cruel tendencies. To indulge evil motives and aims makes any human being, who is above the lowest type of manhood or womanhood, a hopeless sufferer.

Christian Science requires us to improve our intentions.

Divine Mind rightly demands our entire obedience, affection, and strength. No reservation is made for any lesser commitment. Obedience to truth gives us power and strength. Obedience to error coincides with loss of power.

The Scriptures say, “Those who look to the Lord will win new strength, they will soar as on eagles’ wings; they will run and not feel faint, march on and not grow weary.”[2] The meaning of that passage is not perverted by applying it literally to moments of fatigue, for the moral and physical are as one in their results. When we wake to the truth of being, all disease, pain, weakness, weariness, sorrow, sin will be unknown, and the dream of dualism will forever cease. My method of treating fatigue applies to all bodily ailments, since Mind should be, and is, all.

In mathematics, we do not multiply when we need to subtract and then say the answer is correct. No more can we say in Science that muscles give strength, that nerves give pain or pleasure, that genes and chemicals govern, and then expect the result will be harmony. Material muscles, nerves, DNA, or bones are nothing without mind, but human mind keeps beating its head “against brick walls,”[3] trying to heal with incorrect premises. Divine Mind heals.

Isaiah 11:1-5

1-5 A green Shoot will sprout from Jesse’s stump,
from his roots a budding Branch.
The life-giving Spirit of God will hover over him,
the Spirit that brings wisdom and understanding,
The Spirit that gives direction and builds strength,
the Spirit that instills knowledge and Fear-of-God.
will be all his joy and delight.
He won’t judge by appearances,
won’t decide on the basis of hearsay.
He’ll judge the needy by what is right,
render decisions on earth’s poor with justice.
His words will bring everyone to awed attention.
A mere breath from his lips will topple the wicked.
Each morning he’ll pull on sturdy work clothes and boots,
and build righteousness and faithfulness in the land.

Whatever holds human thought in line with selfless love, receives directly the divine power.

I was called to visit Mr. Clark in Lynn, who had been confined to his bed six months with hip-disease. On entering the house, I met his physician who said that the patient was dying. The physician had probed the ulcer on the hip, told me the bone was decayed for several inches and showed me the evidence. The doctor went out. Mr. Clark lay with his eyes fixed and sightless. The dew of death was on his brow. I went to his bedside. In a few moments, his face changed; its death-pallor gave place to a natural hue. The eyelids closed gently and the breathing became natural; he was asleep. In about ten minutes he opened his eyes and said: “I feel like a new man. My suffering is all gone.” It was between three and four o’clock in the afternoon when this took place.

I told him to get up, dress himself, and eat supper with his family. He did so. The next day I saw him in the yard. Since then I have not seen him, but am informed that he went to work in two weeks. The discharge from the sore stopped and the sore was healed. The diseased condition had been there ever since he was a boy when he had injured himself after falling on a wooden spike.

Since his recovery, I have been informed that his physician claims to have cured him and that the patient’s mother has been threatened with incarceration in a mental health facility for saying: “It was none other than God and that woman who healed him.” I cannot attest the truth of that report, but what I saw and did for that man and what his physician said of the case, occurred just as I have narrated.

It has been demonstrated to me that Life is God and that the might of omnipotent Spirit doesn’t share its strength with matter or with human will. Reviewing this brief experience, I cannot fail to discern the coincidence of the spiritual idea of man and woman with the divine Mind.

A change in human thought changes all the physical symptoms and determines a case for better or for worse. When one’s false belief is corrected, Truth sends a report of health over the body.

Spiritual harmony constitutes individual and collective happiness, strength, and permanence.

Luke 22: 39-46

39-40 Leaving there, [Jesus] went, as he so often did, to Mount Olives. The disciples followed him. When they arrived at the place, he said, “Pray that you don’t give in to temptation.”

41-44 He pulled away from them about a stone’s throw, knelt down, and prayed, “Father, remove this cup from me. But please, not what I want. What do you want?” At once an angel from heaven was at his side, strengthening him. He prayed on all the harder. Sweat, wrung from him like drops of blood, poured off his face.

45-46 He got up from prayer, went back to the disciples and found them asleep, drugged by grief. He said, “What business do you have sleeping? Get up. Pray so you won’t give in to temptation.”

People who do right, and those who do wrong, get their full reward, but not always in this world. The followers of Christ drink from a full cup.[4] Ingratitude and persecution fill the cup to the brim. While drinking from this cup, however, the riches of God’s love permeate our understanding and feelings, giving us the strength and spiritual reward we need.

Through divine Science, religion and medicine are inspired with a more God-like nature and essence. Science gives new strength to faith and understanding, and thoughts intelligently acquaint themselves with God.

Give sick people credit for sometimes knowing more than their doctors. Always support the patient’s trust in the power of Mind to support the body. Never tell the sick that they have more courage than strength. Tell them rather that their strength is in proportion to their courage. If you make the sick realize this important principle, there will be no reaction from over-exertion or from excited conditions. Maintain the facts of divine Science—that Spirit is God and therefore cannot be sick; that what is termed matter cannot be sick; that all cause is Mind, acting through spiritual law. Then take your mental stand with the unshaken understanding of Truth and Love, and you will win. When you silence the opposition against your prayer, you destroy the manifest disorder, for the disease disappears.

Rise in the conscious strength of the spirit of Truth to overthrow the petition of human mind, alias matter, lobbying against the supremacy of Spirit. Exclude the images of mortal thought and its beliefs in sickness and sin. Then, when you are delivered to the judgment of Truth, Christ, the judge will say, “You are well!”[5]

We learn that divine Mind is the master of the human mind and physical senses and can vanquish sickness, sin, and loss. Exercise this God-given power. Take possession of your body and direct its feelings and actions. Advance in the strength of Spirit to resist all that is unlike good. God has made you capable of this and nothing can stop the ability and power divinely bestowed on your spirituality.

The necessity for spiritualizing humanity comes from the fact that Mind can do it. Mind, God, can impart purity instead of impurity, strength instead of weakness, and health instead of disease. Truth improves the entire system, and can heal “the whole body.”[6]

Be well-balanced in your understanding that the divine Mind governs, and that in Science we reflect God’s government.
