Subject: Grow in Heaven
Golden text: Genesis 1:11-15
God spoke: “Earth, green up! Grow all varieties
of seed-bearing plants,
Every sort of fruit-bearing tree.”
And there it was.
Earth produced green seed-bearing plants,
And fruit-bearing trees of all sorts.
God saw that it was good.
It was evening, it was morning—
14-15 God spoke: “Lights! Come out!
Shine in Heaven’s sky!
Separate Day from Night.
Mark seasons and days and years,
Lights in Heaven’s sky to give light to Earth.”
And there it was.
Isaiah 5:1-4, 20
1-2 I’ll sing a ballad to the one I love,
a love ballad about his vineyard:
The one I love had a vineyard,
a fine, well-placed vineyard.
He hoed the soil and pulled the weeds,
and planted the very best vines.
He built a lookout, built a winepress,
a vineyard to be proud of.
He looked for a vintage yield of grapes,
but for all his pains he got junk grapes.
3-4 “Now listen to what I’m telling you,
you who live in Jerusalem and Judah.
What do you think is going on
between me and my vineyard?
Can you think of anything I could have done
to my vineyard that I didn’t do?
When I expected good grapes,
why did I get bitter grapes?
20 Doom to you who call evil good
and good evil,
Who put darkness in place of light
and light in place of darkness,
Who substitute bitter for sweet
and sweet for bitter!

Adversity teaches human beings not to lean on a collapsible crutch. Spiritual development doesn’t come from planting seeds in the dirt of materialist views. Those seeds rot whereas Love nurtures the higher joys of Spirit which have no taint of earth. We forget this when life is fine. But when mortals belch, or the economy goes sour, or people think their partner is boring, the heart is pierced with sadness until we remember that sorrow can be therapeutic, forcing us to enter the domain of spiritual happiness and reliance. God will take care of us as we travel a trajectory unfolding new views of divine goodness and love.
When a relationship is going well, pay attention, otherwise an increasing dependence on one another may yank the rug out from under your feet. If, on the other hand, your relationship is rocky, don’t react, but hope, pray, and wait patiently on divine wisdom to point the way.
Before error is wholly destroyed there will be interruptions of the general human routine. Earth will become dreary and desolate, but summer and winter, seedtime and harvest (though in changed forms) will continue to the end—until the final spiritualization of all things.
This constant thinking of something other than Spirit can inadvertently sow seeds of reliance on matter. Don’t become so captivated by a remedy, that every itch, twinge, or burp is dosed. Clients may reap the effect of this mistaken reliance if healers impulsively endorse drugs, homeopathic powders, acupuncture needles, or magnets as a cure-all.
Descriptions and advertisements of disease given by physicians, pharmaceutical companies, genetic engineers, and Health Departments, are prolific sources of sickness. The human mind is the agriculturist of error, but we can teach the human mind not to harm the body. We can root out of human mind the weeds of sickness.
Ignorant that the human mind governs its phenomenon the body, the sufferer may unconsciously add more fear to the mental reservoir already overflowing with that emotion. Tolerant sufferers try to be satisfied when they see their would-be healer busy. Faith in the healer’s efforts is somewhat helpful to everyone involved; however, in Science, people must understand the resuscitating law of Life. Understanding the self-sustaining Life is in accord with the “plants bearing seed according to their kinds.”
It is constructive for physicians, therapists, and practitioners to know and act on the truth that Mind is existent. Healers should not take the position that matter is the only cause.
Doctors can take note that it is better not to implant disease in the thoughts of your patients by declaring disease to be a fixed fact, even before you go to work to eradicate the disease through the material faith inspired. Instead of furnishing thought with fear, try to correct the turbulent emotion by the influence of divine Love, which removes fear.
When governed by God, the ever-present Mind who understands all things, we know that with God all things are possible. One example of this way to living Truth which heals the sick, is found in the Science of divine Mind as taught and demonstrated by Christ Jesus.
To reduce inflammation, dissolve a tumor, or cure disease, I have found divine Truth more potent than all temporal remedies. And why not, since Mind, God, is the source and condition of all existence? Before deciding that the bodily molecular organization is disordered, it would be better to ask, “Who indeed are you, a human being, to argue with God? Will what is molded say to the one who molds it, ‘Why have you made me like this?’” Matter, which can neither suffer nor enjoy, has no partnership with pain and pleasure, but human belief has such a partnership.
10-11 [Jesus] then called the crowd together and said, “Listen, and take this to heart. It’s not what you swallow that pollutes your life, but what you vomit up.”
12 Later his disciples came and told him, “Did you know how upset the Pharisees were when they heard what you said?”
13-14 Jesus shrugged it off. “Every tree that wasn’t planted by my Father in heaven will be pulled up by its roots. Forget them. They are blind men leading blind men. When a blind man leads a blind man, they both end up in the ditch.”
15 Peter said, “I don’t get it. Put it in plain language.”
16-20 Jesus replied, “You, too? Are you being willfully stupid? Don’t you know that anything that is swallowed works its way through the intestines and is finally defecated? But what comes out of the mouth gets its start in the heart. It’s from the heart that we vomit up evil arguments, murders, adulteries, fornications, thefts, lies, and cussing. That’s what pollutes. Eating or not eating certain foods, washing or not washing your hands—that’s neither here nor there.”

The spiritual sense of truth must be gained before Truth can be understood. This sense is assimilated only as we are honest, unselfish, loving, and humble. In the soil of a “noble and good heart” the seed must be sown, otherwise, the piggish element in human nature uproots the seed making immortal progress negligible. Jesus said: “You are in error because you do not know the Scriptures.” The spiritual understanding of Scriptures brings out the scientific sense. The scientific meaning of the Bible is the new tongue referred to in the last chapter of Mark’s Gospel.
Genesis 1:11. Then God said, “Let the land produce vegetation: seed-bearing plants and trees on the land that bear fruit with seed in it, according to their various kinds.” And it was so.
The universe of Spirit reflects the powerful creativity of the divine Principle or Life, which reproduces the multitudinous forms of Mind and governs the increase of multifaceted spiritual being. The tree and herb do not yield fruit because of any propagating power of their own, but because they reflect the Mind which includes all. A world with mindlessness implies a human mortal mind as creator. The scientific divine creation declares immortal Mind and the universe created by God.
Infinite Mind reveals and governs all, from the mental molecule to infinity. This divine Principle of all expresses Science and art throughout Spirit’s entire work including the immortality of spiritual being and the universe. Creation is always appearing and must always continue to appear from the nature of its inexhaustible source. Mortal sense twists this appearing and calls ideas material. Thus misinterpreted, the divine idea seems to fall to a level of human or material belief, called mortal human being. The seed is in it, only as the divine Mind is All and reproduces all—as Mind is the multiplier and Mind’s infinite idea, person and the universe, is the result. The only intelligence or substance of a thought, a seed, or a flower is God, the creator of it. Mind is the Soul of all. Mind is Life, Truth, and Love which governs all.
Genesis 1:12. The land produced vegetation: plants bearing seed according to their kinds and trees bearing fruit with seed in it according to their kinds. And God saw that it was good.
Kind (sort) does not necessarily refer either to a masculine or feminine gender. Kind is not confined to sexuality and grammars usually recognize a neuter gender, neither male nor female. God determines the gender (kind) of Soul’s ideas. Gender is mental, not physical. The seed within itself is the pure thought emanating from divine Mind. The intelligent individual idea, ever-ascending, unfolds the infinitude of Love.
Genesis 1:13. And there was evening, and there was morning—the third day.
The third stage in the order of divine Science is important to human thought, letting in the light of spiritual understanding. This stage parallels the resurrection, when Spirit is discerned to be the Life of all and that the deathless Life, Mind, is not dependent on material organization. To the comprehension of his students, Jesus rose from the grave, or rather, on the third day of his ascending thought, Jesus reappeared and so presented to them the certain sense of eternal Life.
Genesis 1:14. And God said, “Let there be lights in the expanse of the sky to separate the day from the night, and let them serve as signs to mark seasons and days and years.
Spirit creates heavenly or celestial bodies, but outer space is no more celestial than our earth. This text gives the idea of the diffusion of thought as it expands. Divine Mind forms and peoples the universe. The light of spiritual understanding gives glints of the infinite, even as black holes indicate the immensity of space.
Mineral, vegetable, and animal substances are no more contingent now on time or material structure than they were “while the morning stars sang together.” Mind made the “plant of the field” before it appeared on the earth. The events of spiritual ascension are the days and seasons of Mind’s revelation, in which beauty, magnificence, purity, and holiness (the divine nature) appear in spiritual beings and the universe, never to disappear.
Knowing the Science of creation, in which all is Mind and its ideas, Jesus rebuked the materialist thought of the people: “You hypocrites! You know how to analyze the appearance of the earth and the sky, but why do you not analyze this present time?” We may be able to sequence the human genome, but wouldn’t we rather seek and know the thoughts behind the genes? To discern the rhythm of Spirit and to be holy, thought must be purely spiritual.
The plant grows not because of seed or soil or bioengineering, but because growth is the eternal rule of Mind. The immortal creative thought is from Mind, not from the ground of mortal thinking. Mind makes all, so there is nothing left to be made by another power. Spirit acts through the Science of Mind, never causing us to grow mortal thinking. Knowing this fact, we can overcome physical limitations and the mortal views of earth and its environments. We can discover conscious spiritual harmony and eternal being.
