bible study imageGolden text: Psalm 67:1-7*

God, mark us with grace and blessing! Smile! The whole country will see how you work, all the godless nations see how you save. God! Let people thank and enjoy you. Let all people thank and enjoy you. Let all far-flung people become happy and shout their happiness because You judge them fair and square, you tend the far-flung peoples. God! Let people thank and enjoy you. Let all people thank and enjoy you. Earth, display your exuberance! You mark us with blessing, O God, our God. You mark us with blessing, O God. Earth’s four corners—honor him!

Genesis 30:9-13

When Leah saw that she wasn’t having any more children, she gave her maid Zilpah to Jacob for a wife. Zilpah had a son for Jacob. Leah said, “How fortunate!” and she named him Gad (Lucky). When Leah’s maid Zilpah had a second son for Jacob, Leah said, “A happy day! The women will congratulate me in my happiness.” So she named him Asher (Happy)

The test of prayer is found in the answers to these questions: Do we love our neighbor better because of our prayer? Or, are we satisfied with imploring words and no evidence of living consistently with our prayer? If selfishness has given way to kindness, we will regard our neighbor unselfishly and pray for our enemies;[1] but this great responsibility is never accomplished simply by asking that it may be done. Improvement of mind/body/spirit needs to be tangible before we can experience the achievement of our hope and faith.

Do you “love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your mind”?[2] This counsel includes much, even the surrender of all mortal perceptions, habits, and reverences.

Mortals can never understand God’s creation while believing that human beings are creators. Whether marriage or reproduction happens or not, God’s children, spiritual beings, already created, will be recognized as we awake to the truth of being. Spiritually to understand that there is but one creator, God, reveals all creation, confirms Scripture, and brings the sweet assurance of no parting and no pain, which in turn exposes the deathless, perfect, and eternal ideal.

If practicing Christian Science and educating your own offspring spiritually, you then can educate others spiritually and not conflict with the scientific sense of God’s creation. One day, a child will ask, “Do you keep the First Commandment? Do you have one God and creator, or are human being’s creators?” If you answer, “God creates human beings through human beings,” the child may retort, “Do you teach that Spirit creates materially, or do you teach that Spirit is infinite and creates spiritually?” Jesus said, “The people of this age marry and are given in marriage. But those who are considered worthy of taking part in that age and in the resurrection from the dead will neither marry nor be given in marriage.”[3]

Our personal relationship with Principle is higher and grander than human mortal friendships which are often unreliable, biased, or fragile.

Strangely enough, we ask for physical theories to support spiritual and eternal truths when the two are so antagonistic that the human thought must become spiritualized before the spiritual fact is attained. The material existence affords no evidence of spiritual being or immortality. Sin, sickness, and death do not prove the immortality of person. Discord can never establish the facts of harmony. Matter is not the threshold of Spirit.

Earth has little light or joy before Life is spiritually learned. Every agony of mortal error helps error to destroy itself and we perceive immortal Truth. This is the new birth going on hourly, by which human beings may entertain angels, the true ideas of God, the unlimited sense of being.

Mark 7:24-30

From there Jesus set out for the vicinity of Tyre. He entered a house there where he didn’t think he would be found, but he couldn’t escape notice. He was barely inside when a woman who had a disturbed daughter heard where he was. She came and knelt at his feet, begging for help. The woman was Greek, Syro-Phoenician by birth. She asked him to cure her daughter.

27 He said, “Stand in line and take your turn. The children get fed first. If there’s any left over, the dogs get it.”

28 She said, “Of course, Master. But don’t dogs under the table get scraps dropped by the children?”

29-30 Jesus was impressed. “You’re right! On your way! Your daughter is no longer disturbed. The demonic affliction is gone.” She went home and found her daughter relaxed on the bed, the torment gone for good.

Give us this day our daily bread.
Give us grace for today; feed the famished intentions.

Spiritual involvement heals, while material attachment interferes with truth and ritualism and creed stifle spirituality. If we trust materiality, we distrust Spirit.

Song, sermon, and Science—crumbs of comfort—are capable to inspire us with wisdom, Truth, and Love. Spiritual comfort blesses the human family, feeds the unsatisfied, and gives living water to the thirsty.

Circulate happiness and compassion in the home and community to promote the sweet interchange of confidence and love, but be sure not to generate a wandering desire for incessant amusement outside the home circle.

I John 5:1-3, 11-15

Every person who believes that Jesus is, in fact, the Messiah, is God-begotten. If we love the One who conceives the child, we’ll surely love the child who was conceived. The reality test on whether or not we love God’s children is this: Do we love God? Do we keep his commands? The proof that we love God comes when we keep his commandments and they are not at all troublesome.

11-12 This is the testimony in essence: God gave us eternal life; the life is in his Son. So, whoever has the Son, has life; whoever rejects the Son, rejects life.

13-15 My purpose in writing is simply this: that you who believe in God’s Son will know beyond the shadow of a doubt that you have eternal life, the reality and not the illusion. And how bold and free we then become in his presence, freely asking according to his will, sure that he’s listening. And if we’re confident that he’s listening, we know that what we’ve asked for is as good as ours.

Let us acknowledge Science. Let us stop accepting theories based on temporal sense-testimony. Give up faulty models and illusive icons. Let us have one God, one Mind, and that one perfect, producing Spirit’s own models of excellence.

People with mental work before them have no time for gossip about false law or testimony.

These changes which go on in human mind serve to reconstruct the body. Thus divine Science, by the alchemy of Spirit, destroys concepts of mortality.

Let us suppose two parallel cases of bone disease, both similarly produced and attended by the same symptoms. A surgeon is employed in one case, and a Christian Scientist in the other. The surgeon, believing that matter forms its own conditions and renders them fatal at certain points, entertains fears and doubts as to the ultimate outcome of the disease. Not holding the control-instruments in his own hands, the surgeon believes that something stronger than Mind—controls the case. The surgeon’s treatment is therefore tentative. This mindset invites defeat because it believes it has encountered a superior, called matter. The belief of a power opposing Mind increases fear and makes healing the bone more difficult. Yet this belief should not be communicated to the patient, either verbally or otherwise, for this fear greatly diminishes the tendency toward a favorable result. Remember that the unexpressed belief oftentimes affects a sensitive patient more strongly than the expressed thought.

The Christian Scientist, understanding that all is Mind, commences with mental causation, the truth of being, to destroy the disease, or error. This remedy has the power to correct positively, and to reach to every part of the human system. According to Scripture, it searches the “joints and marrow,”[4] and restores the healthy functions of the body.

The physical-physician deals with physicality as both the aggravator and the reliever. The ailment is regarded as weakened or strengthened according to the evidence which physical matter presents. Conversely, the metaphysical physician makes Mind the basis of the operation, despite matter. The truth and harmony of being are regarded as superior to error and disorder, and the metaphysician is rendered strong instead of weak to cope with the case. The mental scientist proportionately strengthens the patient with the stimulus of courage and conscious power. Both Science and consciousness are now at work in the economy of being according to the law of Mind, which ultimately asserts its absolute presence.

Osteoporosis or any abnormal condition or derangement of the body is as directly the action of mortal mind as are functional or chemically based mental disorders, even depression. Bones and brains have only the substance of thought which forms them. They are phenomena of the minds of human beings. The so-called substance of bone is formed first by the parent’s mind, through self-division. Soon the child becomes a separate, individualized human mind, which takes possession of itself and its own thoughts of bones.

The testimony of human perceptions is neither absolute nor divine. I therefore stand unreservedly on the teachings of Jesus, of his apostles, of the prophets, and on the testimony of the Science of Mind. There are no other foundations. All other systems—systems based wholly or partly on knowledge gained through the physical senses—are reeds swayed by the wind,[5] not houses built on the rock.[6]

The testimony of Spirit, Soul, maintains: I am Spirit. Individuals, whose perceptions are spiritual, are my likeness, reflecting the infinite understanding, for I am Infinity. The beauty of holiness, the completion of being, and imperishable glory—all are Mine, for I am God. I give spirituality, for I am Truth. I include and impart all happiness, for I am Love. I give life, without beginning and without end, for I am Life. I am supreme. I am an unlimited source of good ideas, for I am Mind. I am the substance of all, because “I AM WHO I AM.”[7]
