Subject: New-old resurrection

Golden text: Isaiah 60:1*

Arise, shine, for your light has come, and the glory of the Lord has risen upon you.

Matthew 13:37-52

[Jesus said] “Again, the kingdom of heaven is like a net that was thrown into the sea and gathered fish of every kind. 48 When it was full, men drew it ashore and sat down and sorted the good into containers but threw away the bad. 49 So it will be at the end of the age. The angels will come out and separate the evil from the righteous 50 and throw them into the fiery furnace. In that place there will be weeping and gnashing of teeth. 51 “Have you understood all these things?” They said to him, “Yes.” 52 And he said to them, “Therefore every scribe who has been trained for the kingdom of heaven is like a master of a house, who brings out of his treasure what is new and what is old.”

Jesus taught spirituality by parables and stories.

The belief that we have an existence or mind separate from God is a dying error—met and corrected by Jesus.

The furnace separates the gold from the dross that the precious metal may be graven with the image of God. It is life-giving to learn the lessons God teaches.

God is not separate from the wisdom bestowed.

God is the only truth-giver. As light destroys darkness and in the place of darkness all is light, so in absolute Science, Soul, or God, destroys mortality and in the place of mortality all is immortality. Fire and frost mingle as readily as Spirit and spirits. In either case, one does not support the other. Human belief (the limited sense of life) and immortal Truth (the spiritual sense) are the weeds and the wheat,[1] separated by progress.

The human thought must free itself from self-imposed materiality and bondage.

Late in the nineteenth century I demonstrated the divine rules of Science. The rules were submitted to broad practical testing, and when honestly applied under circumstances where demonstration was humanly possible, the results showed that Truth is still effective in healing, the same as when Jesus practiced these divine rules on the hills of Judea and in the valleys of Galilee.

The validity of divine Science is found in the Bible, yet the divine origin of Science is demonstrated through the holy influence of Truth in healing sickness and sin. The healing power of Truth must have existed before Jesus’ time. It is as ancient as “the Ancient of Days.”[2] It lives through all Life and extends throughout all space.

John 19:23, 38-40

When the soldiers had crucified Jesus, they took his garments and divided them into four parts, one part for each soldier; also his tunic.

After these things Joseph of Arimathea, who was a disciple of Jesus, but secretly for fear of the Jews, asked Pilate that he might take away the body of Jesus, and Pilate gave him permission. So he came and took away his body. 39 Nicodemus also, who earlier had come to Jesus by night, came bringing a mixture of myrrh and aloes, about seventy-five pounds in weight. 40 So they took the body of Jesus and bound it in linen cloths with the spices, as is the burial custom of the Jews.

Because you can’t walk on the water and raise the dead, you have no right to question the great might of divine Science in these directions. Be thankful that Jesus, who was the true demonstrator of Science, did these things and left his example for us. With Science, we can use only what we understand. We must prove our faith by demonstration.

People should not linger in the storm if the body is freezing, nor should they remain in devouring flames. Until you are able to prevent bad results, it is best to avoid adverse situations. To be discouraged is to resemble a student who is at an elementary level of mathematics and yet attempts to solve a problem of Euclid, only to deny the rule of the problem because the first effort brought failure.

If a dose of poison is swallowed by mistake and the patient dies even though physician and patient are expecting favorable results, does human belief cause the death? Yes, and as directly as if the poison had been taken intentionally.

In that case, only a few people believed the poison swallowed by the patient would be harmless, whereas the vast majority, the collective consciousness of humankind, believes the sleeping pills, strychnine, antianxiety drugs, or whatever the poison was, to be toxic. Bear in mind, although mass consciousness knows nothing about this particular case and patient, the drug is still marked down as a poison by human mind. Consequently, the result is controlled by the majority of collective opinions, not by the infinitesimal minority of opinions in the sick room.

Human mind, acting from the basis of sensation in matter, is susceptible to suggestions. This so-called mind from which comes all evil, contradicts itself and must finally yield to eternal Truth as expressed in Science. In proportion to our understanding of Christian Science, we are freed from the suggestions of physical inheritance or mind in illusive matter. We disarm sin of its imaginary power as we scientifically understand the status of spiritual being.

It is backwards to believe that anything can overpower omnipotent and eternal Life. This Life must be brought to light by the understanding that there is no death, as well as by other graces of Spirit. We must begin however with more simple demonstrations of control and the sooner we begin the better. The final demonstration takes time for its accomplishment. When walking, we are guided by the eye. We look before our feet and if we are wise, we look beyond a single step in the line of spiritual advancement.

Science declares that we are under the power of Mind, as compared to human knowledge declaring that our body has dominance over our mind and can make us suffer. But what can we learn from the human logic that affirms the body dies and decomposes into dust? The corpse, deserted by thought becomes cold and decays, but it never suffers. Human beings waken from the dream of death with bodies unseen by those who think that they bury the body.

John 20:1-9

Now on the first day of the week Mary Magdalene came to the tomb early, while it was still dark, and saw that the stone had been taken away from the tomb. So she ran and went to Simon Peter and the other disciple, the one whom Jesus loved, and said to them, “They have taken the Lord out of the tomb, and we do not know where they have laid him.” So Peter went out with the other disciple, and they were going toward the tomb. Both of them were running together, but the other disciple outran Peter and reached the tomb first. And stooping to look in, he saw the linen cloths lying there, but he did not go in. Then Simon Peter came, following him, and went into the tomb. He saw the linen cloths lying there, and the face cloth, which had been on Jesus’ head, not lying with the linen cloths but folded up in a place by itself. Then the other disciple, who had reached the tomb first, also went in, and he saw and believed; for as yet they did not understand the Scripture, that he must rise from the dead.

John 21:20-25

Peter turned and saw the disciple whom Jesus loved following them, the one who also had leaned back against him during the supper and had said, “Lord, who is it that is going to betray you?” 21 When Peter saw him, he said to Jesus, “Lord, what about this man?” 22 Jesus said to him, “If it is my will that he remain until I come, what is that to you? You follow me!” 23 So the saying spread abroad among the brothers that this disciple was not to die; yet Jesus did not say to him that he was not to die, but, “If it is my will that he remain until I come, what is that to you?”

24 This is the disciple who is bearing witness about these things, and who has written these things, and we know that his testimony is true.

25 Now there are also many other things that Jesus did. Were every one of them to be written, I suppose that the world itself could not contain the books that would be written.

The resurrection indicates that mortal mindsets die, while spiritual mindsets live; it indicates full evidence of immortal being and metaphysical science, evidence so important to mortals. The belief that we have an existence or mind separate from God is a dying error—met and corrected by Jesus. Because God bestowed glory on the anointed Jesus, temptation, sin, sickness, and death did not terrorize him. Let people think they had killed the body! Afterward, he would show it again as unchanged. This demonstrates that in Christian Science the true individual is governed by God, by good, not evil, and is immortal, not mortal. Jesus taught the Science by his actions. He enabled his disciples to test his mysterious saying, “Anyone who has faith in me will do what I have been doing.”[3] We understand more fully the Life-principle by driving out error, healing the sick, and raising the dead.

The magnitude of Jesus’ scientific work—his disappearance and reappearance before the physical eye—enabled the disciples to understand what he had said. Previously, they had only believed Jesus’ words, now they understood. Their spiritual enlightenment was parallel to the coming of the Holy Spirit on Pentecostal Day, the reappearance of divine Science repeating itself.

Truth is indivisible; error is divisible. Truth is limitless; error is limited. Truth is intelligent; error is non-intelligent. Moreover, Truth is real, and error is unreal. This last statement contains the point you will most reluctantly admit, although first and last it is the most important to understand.

Christianity and Science can be viewed as one and the same in demonstration, otherwise one or the other is false and useless. Christianity as Jesus taught it was neither a creed nor a system of scared ceremonies, nor a special gift from a ritualistic Yahweh; but it was the demonstration of divine Love overcoming error and healing the sick, not merely in the name of Truth, but in demonstration of Truth—as in the ongoing cycles of divine light.

Jesus established his church and maintained his mission on a spiritual foundation of Truth-healing, launching a religion with a divine Principle that overcomes errors and disorders. Jesus didn’t claim an intelligence, action, or life separate from God. Despite the persecution poured on him, Jesus used his divine power to save individuals, both bodily and spiritually.

The resurrection advances individual and collective consciousness, it moves thought out of spiritual dullness and blind belief into the perception of infinite possibilities.
