Golden text: I Kings 8:57-58*
The Lord our God be with us, as he was with our fathers. May he not leave us or forsake us, 58 that he may incline our hearts to him, to walk in all his ways and to keep his commandments, his statutes, and his rules, which he commanded our fathers.
Now muster your troops, O daughter of troops;
siege is laid against us;
with a rod they strike the judge of Israel
on the cheek.
2 But you, O Bethlehem Ephrathah,
who are too little to be among the clans of Judah,
from you shall come forth for me
one who is to be ruler in Israel,
whose coming forth is from of old,
from ancient days.
3 Therefore he shall give them up until the time
when she who is in labor has given birth;
then the rest of his brothers shall return
to the people of Israel.
4 And he shall stand and shepherd his flock in the strength of the Lord,
in the majesty of the name of the Lord his God.
And they shall dwell secure, for now he shall be great
to the ends of the earth.
5 And he shall be their peace.
When the Assyrian comes into our land
and treads in our palaces,
then we will raise against him seven shepherds
and eight princes of men;
6 they shall shepherd the land of Assyria with the sword,
and the land of Nimrod at its entrances;
and he shall deliver us from the Assyrian
when he comes into our land
and treads within our border.

It is most beneficial to become more familiar with good than with evil. We can guard against false beliefs as diligently as we bolt our doors against the approach of thieves and murderers. We should love our enemies and help them on the basis of the Golden Rule, “Do to others what you would have them do to you.” Avoid throwing “your pearls to pigs,” because if you do, everyone loses out.
This indisputable Principle points to the revelation of Immanuel, “God with us,” the sovereign ever-presence, delivering the children of human beings from every ill “that flesh is heir to.” Through divine Science, religion and medicine are inspired with a more God-like nature and essence. Science gives new strength to faith and understanding, and thoughts intelligently acquaint themselves with God.
A correct view of Christian Science and of its application to healing includes vastly more than can be seen at first. Many works on metaphysics do not recognize the power of Mind as the Messiah, leaving the grand point untouched. We want to carry the day against physical enemies—even to the extinction of all belief in materialism, evil, disease, and death. Pure metaphysics insists on the fact that God is all, therefore, temporal substance is nothing but an image in human mind.
Whatever resembles an idea governed by Principle, furnishes food for thought. Through astronomy, art, natural history, chemistry, music, and mathematics, thought passes naturally from effect back to cause.
Then the Lord said to me, “Take a large tablet and write on it in common characters, ‘Belonging to Maher-shalal-hash-baz.’ 2 And I will get reliable witnesses, Uriah the priest and Zechariah the son of Jeberechiah, to attest for me.”
3 And I went to the prophetess, and she conceived and bore a son. Then the Lord said to me, “Call his name Maher-shalal-hash-baz; 4 for before the boy knows how to cry ‘My father’ or ‘My mother,’ the wealth of Damascus and the spoil of Samaria will be carried away before the king of Assyria.”
5 The Lord spoke to me again: 6 “Because this people has refused the waters of Shiloah that flow gently, and rejoice over Rezin and the son of Remaliah, 7 therefore, behold, the Lord is bringing up against them the waters of the River, mighty and many, the king of Assyria and all his glory. And it will rise over all its channels and go over all its banks, 8 and it will sweep on into Judah, it will overflow and pass on, reaching even to the neck, and its outspread wings will fill the breadth of your land, O Immanuel.”
9 Be broken, you peoples, and be shattered;
give ear, all you far countries;
strap on your armor and be shattered;
strap on your armor and be shattered.
10 Take counsel together, but it will come to nothing;
speak a word, but it will not stand,
for God is with us.

Mortal birth and death comes across as irresistible or untimely, however God’s people aren’t mortals. Mortals are unreal and obsolete. The truth of being is perennial. We are God’s image and likeness. Demonstration is Immanuel or “God with us.”
When we feel the loss of human peace, the desire for spiritual joy gets stronger.
People with mental work before them have no time for gossip about false law or testimony. To reconstruct timid justice and place the fact above the falsehood, is the work of time.
Sects that endure the abuse of their predecessors, in turn, are tempted to treat badly those who are in advance of creeds. For Christianity, the cross is the central emblem of history. It is the guiding star in the demonstration of Christ-like healing—the demonstration by which sin and sickness are overcome.
Research points to the frailty and inadequacy of human minds and brains. Professor Susan Greenfield reports online at www.dailymail.co.uk, that, “Today’s technology is already producing a marked shift in the way we think and behave, particularly among the young.” Specifically talking about pleasure, Greenfield continues, “For some, pleasure means wine, women and song; for others, more recently, sex, drugs and rock-n-roll; and for millions today, endless hours at the computer console.”
These cases prove physical senses are beliefs formed by education or trained behavior. The hours and days spent in front of the computer video games would be appalling to the person who was enjoys a walk in the park. Sounds and sights from multichannel televisions and MP3 players that thrill some viewers, can convulse other people trained in an opposite direction.
The eternal Truth destroys what human beings have learned from error and our real selfhood comes to light. Truth lived is eternal life.
Matthew 1: 18-25
Now the birth of Jesus Christ took place in this way. When his mother Mary had been betrothed to Joseph, before they came together she was found to be with child from the Holy Spirit. 19 And her husband Joseph, being a just man and unwilling to put her to shame, resolved to divorce her quietly. 20 But as he considered these things, behold, an angel of the Lord appeared to him in a dream, saying, “Joseph, son of David, do not fear to take Mary as your wife, for that which is conceived in her is from the Holy Spirit. 21 She will bear a son, and you shall call his name Jesus, for he will save his people from their sins.” 22 All this took place to fulfill what the Lord had spoken by the prophet:
23 “Behold, the virgin shall conceive and bear a son,
and they shall call his name Immanuel”
(which means, God with us). 24 When Joseph woke from sleep, he did as the angel of the Lord commanded him: he took his wife, 25 but knew her not until she had given birth to a son. And he called his name Jesus.

The word Christ is not properly a synonym for Jesus, though it is frequently used as such. Jesus was a human name, which belonged to him in common with other Hebrew boys and men, for it is identical with the name Joshua, the renowned Hebrew leader. Christ is not a name so much as the divine title of Jesus. Christ expresses God’s immeasurable, eternal nature. The name is synonymous with Messiah and alludes to the spirituality which is taught, illustrated, and demonstrated in the life of which Christ Jesus embodied. The proper name of the Teacher in the Greek was Jesus the Christ; but Christ Jesus better signifies the Godlike.
The advent of Jesus of Nazareth marked the first century of the Christian era, but Christ-spirit is without beginning of years or end of days. Throughout all generations both before and after the Christian era, the Christ, as the divine idea—the reflection of God—has come with some degree of power and grace to all prepared to receive the Messiah, or Truth. Abraham, Jacob, Moses, and the prophets caught glorious glimpses of Christ, which baptized these insightful people in the nature, or essence of Love. The divine image, idea, or Christ was, is, and ever will be inseparable from the divine Principle, Truth.
Isn’t it a species of unbelief to believe that so great a work as the Messiah’s was done for himself or for God? God did not need Jesus’ example to preserve the eternal harmony, however human beings did, and Jesus pointed the way. Divine Love always has met and always will meet every human need.
To attend properly the birth of the new child, or divine idea, be sure to detach mortal thoughts from the human conceptions so that the birth will be natural and safe. As the child gathers new energy, the divine idea cannot injure its useful surroundings in its spiritual birth. There is not a single element of error in a spiritual idea and this truth properly removes anything that is offensive. The new idea, conceived and born of Truth and Love, is clothed in white garments and includes a humble beginning, a sturdy growth, and a renewing maturity. When this new birth takes place, the infant is born of the Spirit, born of God, and can cause the mother no more suffering. By this we know that Truth is here and has fulfilled its perfect work.
Jesus was in harmony with Christ, inseparable from the Messiah—the divine idea of God outside the flesh but with us now. This enabled Jesus to demonstrate his control over matter. Angels announced to the wise men this dual appearing, and angels whisper it through faith, to the hungering heart in every age.
