Golden text: Psalm 56:3-4*

When I am afraid, I put my trust in you. In God, whose word I praise, in God I trust; I shall not be afraid. What can flesh do to me?

II Kings 1: 9-18

Then the king sent to [Elijah] a captain of fifty men with his fifty. He went up to Elijah, who was sitting on the top of a hill, and said to him, “O man of God, the king says, ‘Come down.’” 10 But Elijah answered the captain of fifty, “If I am a man of God, let fire come down from heaven and consume you and your fifty.” Then fire came down from heaven and consumed him and his fifty.

11 Again the king sent to him another captain of fifty men with his fifty. And he answered and said to him, “O man of God, this is the king’s order, ‘Come down quickly!’” 12 But Elijah answered them, “If I am a man of God, let fire come down from heaven and consume you and your fifty.” Then the fire of God came down from heaven and consumed him and his fifty.

13 Again the king sent the captain of a third fifty with his fifty. And the third captain of fifty went up and came and fell on his knees before Elijah and entreated him, “O man of God, please let my life, and the life of these fifty servants of yours, be precious in your sight. 14 Behold, fire came down from heaven and consumed the two former captains of fifty men with their fifties, but now let my life be precious in your sight.” 15 Then the angel of the Lord said to Elijah, “Go down with him; do not be afraid of him.” So he arose and went down with him to the king 16 and said to him, “Thus says the Lord, ‘Because you have sent messengers to inquire of Baal-zebub, the god of Ekron—is it because there is no God in Israel to inquire of his word?—therefore you shall not come down from the bed to which you have gone up, but you shall surely die.’”

17 So he died according to the word of the Lord that Elijah had spoken. Jehoram became king in his place in the second year of Jehoram the son of Jehoshaphat, king of Judah, because Ahaziah had no son. 18 Now the rest of the acts of Ahaziah that he did, are they not written in the Book of the Chronicles of the Kings of Israel?

We must learn how humankind governs the body, whether through faith in time, drugs, or will-power. Does humankind govern the body through a belief in the necessity of sickness and death, sin and pardon? Or, does humanity govern it from the higher understanding that the divine Mind constantly reveals life, substance, and love? Divine Mind acts on the human mind through truth, leading humankind to relinquish falsities. Our spiritual mindedness understands divine Mind as the only Mind and the healer of bad-will, disease, and lack. This process of higher spiritual understanding improves humanity and displaces error until nothing is left which deserves to perish or be punished.

Fear can be so great at certain times that human thought will automatically be pushed into a new path. If thought takes the path of death, mortals wake to the knowledge of two facts: (1) they are not dead; (2) they entered a different or interim belief, therefore, people who have been termed “clinically dead” come back with stories to tell. Truth works out the nothingness of error in just these ways. Sickness, as well as sin, is an error that Christ, Truth, alone can destroy.

Our true identity is the likeness of Spirit, Ego. We are not God, but we are the outcome of Spirit. We reflect God.

Human body and mind are one and the same, and that one is mistakenly called our identity, but a human is not a spiritual individual. Mortal humans are dreamers and dreams. Depending on the dreams we entertain when asleep, human beings can find themselves in pain, afraid, in danger, or in peace. From an observer’s point of view, the mind and body is asleep, insensible. When the human wakes, the feelings vanish and the dream-sensations are no longer experienced.

Human existence is like a soap-opera. The human mind’s performance consists of mortal thoughts chasing after each other only to always find disaster and heartache. In the theater of divine Science, Life is not at the mercy of mortality. Science can’t admit that happiness is ever the sport of circumstance.

Human thinking doesn’t need to demand more and more attention as it accelerates toward self-destruction. Let’s take an abscess. The sore doesn’t need to become more painful before the pus is absorbed or drained. Or, in the case of a fever, the fever doesn’t need to become severe or critical before it ends.

Physical sense flaunts the belief that mind is lesser. Human belief—shifting between feelings of satisfaction and dissatisfaction, hope and fear, life and death—never breaks through the limiting factors of the mortal or the unreal. Ah! But when the real is experienced, joy is no longer fragile and hope is no longer a con artist. Spiritual ideas, like numbers and notes, start from Principle and admit no limiting factors. Spiritual ideas lead up to their divine origin, God, and to the spiritual sense of being. Spiritual perception, excelling over mutable perceptions, involves intuition, hope, faith, understanding, spiritual experience, reality.

Luke 1:6-35

In the sixth month the angel Gabriel was sent from God to a city of Galilee named Nazareth, 27 to a virgin betrothed to a man whose name was Joseph, of the house of David. And the virgin’s name was Mary. 28 And he came to her and said, “Greetings, O favored one, the Lord is with you!” 29 But she was greatly troubled at the saying, and tried to discern what sort of greeting this might be. 30 And the angel said to her, “Do not be afraid, Mary, for you have found favor with God. 31 And behold, you will conceive in your womb and bear a son, and you shall call his name Jesus. 32 He will be great and will be called the Son of the Most High. And the Lord God will give to him the throne of his father David, 33 and he will reign over the house of Jacob forever, and of his kingdom there will be no end.”

34 And Mary said to the angel, “How will this be, since I am a virgin?”

35 And the angel answered her, “The Holy Spirit will come upon you, and the power of the Most High will overshadow you; therefore the child to be born will be called holy—the Son of God.

Is there any more reality in the waking dream of human existence than in the sleeping dream? There can’t be, since whatever appears to be a human being is a mortal dream. Take away the mortal human mind and the body doesn’t know if it is a person or a bird. The immortal, real individual is spiritual, always conscious.

The movement of thought, advancing past limiting standpoints is slow and warns the spiritual traveler of the long haul ahead. However, the angels of Love’s presence—the spiritual intuitions that tell us when “the night is nearly over; the day is almost here”[1]—are our guardians in the gloom. Whoever opens the way in divine Science is a pioneer and stranger, marking out the path for generations yet unborn.

The thunder of Sinai and the Sermon on the Mount are pursuing and will overtake evolving thoughts. In this course, all error is rebuked and the kingdom of heaven on earth is proclaimed. Truth is made known, it needs only to be practiced.

A higher and more practical Christianity, demonstrating justice and meeting the needs of human beings in sickness and in health, stands at the door of this age knocking for admission. Will you open or close the door upon this angel visitor? Will you welcome the angel who comes quietly and unpretentiously?

Humans draw angels with superstitious outlines but they have no reality except in the artist’s own observation and “[secret] chambers of [idol] pictures.”[2] Angels are not otherworldly mortal-like beings traveling on physical forces. Angels are heavenly visitors traveling on metaphysical forces. Angels are pure thoughts from God, having diverse individualities. Angels are empowered by Truth and Love. Angels are spiritual. Their symbols embody an unseen quality or condition, similar to Michelangelo’s David.[3]

Angels are exalted thoughts, glowing through cracks to the depth of darkness where human thinking has buried its worthy hopes. Exalted thoughts lead us to new and glorified trusts, to higher ideals of life and joys. Angels are God’s representatives. These ascending beings never lead toward selfishness, sin, or materiality, but guide to the divine Principle of all good, where every real individuality, image, or likeness of God, gathers. Resolved to pay attention to these angelic spiritual guides they stay with us and we entertain “angels without knowing it.”[4]

Romans 8:9

You, however, are not in the flesh but in the Spirit, if in fact the Spirit of God dwells in you.

21st Century Science and Health

The human body and consciousness are temporal, but the real substance and consciousness are spiritual and eternal. Spiritual consciousness is not lost, but found through this explanation; for the conscious infinitude of existence and of all identity is thereby discerned and remains unchanged. It is impossible for us to lose anything that is real when God is all and eternally ours. The impulse to believe that mind is in flesh and that the fleshly pleasures, pains, births, illnesses, defects, and deaths are real and can’t be forgotten, is a human conviction and that conviction is all that will ever be lost.

Harmonious individual being has existed forever and is always beyond and above the mortal illusion of life, substance, and intelligence as existent in measurable energies. The Science of being reveals spiritual beings as complete, unbound, even as the Father-Mother is universal. Reality is governed by Soul instead of sense, by the law of Spirit, not by the so-called laws of physics.

God is Love, the divine Father-Mother, infinite Principle, called Person. Our true consciousness is in the mental, not in any bodily or independent likeness of Spirit. Indeed, the body presents no proper likeness of divinity, though human ego would gladly have us believe otherwise.

In divine Science, individual spiritual ideas multiply as they reflect Spirit’s creative power. The reflection is a mental manifestation of the multitudinous forms of Mind which people the realm of the real. Principle governs the reflection. God’s children do not reproduce by multiplying their own spirit, but by reflecting Spirit.

Every little detail of all individualities reflects the one infinite individuality, God. Individual characteristics are understood in, and formed by Spirit, not by mortal genes and environments. The statements that individuals are conceived and evolved both spiritually and physically, or by both God and human beings, are contradictory. All the vanity of the ages can never make contraries true. Divine Science removes the illusion that life or mind is formed by or is in separable bodies or energies as understood today. Today’s incomplete understanding self-destructs due to its own contradictions, but the Science of Life can be understood. Whatever reflects Mind, Life, Truth, and Love is spiritually conceived and brought forth.
