Golden text: II Samuel 7:22*

Therefore you are great, O Lord God. For there is none like you, and there is no God besides you, according to all that we have heard with our ears.

Luke 5:1-11

On one occasion, while the crowd was pressing in on [Jesus] to hear the word of God, he was standing by the lake of Gennesaret, and he saw two boats by the lake, but the fishermen had gone out of them and were washing their nets. Getting into one of the boats, which was Simon’s, he asked him to put out a little from the land. And he sat down and taught the people from the boat. And when he had finished speaking, he said to Simon, “Put out into the deep and let down your nets for a catch.” And Simon answered, “Master, we toiled all night and took nothing! But at your word I will let down the nets.” And when they had done this, they enclosed a large number of fish, and their nets were breaking. They signaled to their partners in the other boat to come and help them. And they came and filled both the boats, so that they began to sink. But when Simon Peter saw it, he fell down at Jesus’ knees, saying, “Depart from me, for I am a sinful man, O Lord.” For he and all who were with him were astonished at the catch of fish that they had taken, 10 and so also were James and John, sons of Zebedee, who were partners with Simon. And Jesus said to Simon, “Do not be afraid; from now on you will be catching men.” 11 And when they had brought their boats to land, they left everything and followed him.

The Science of being is intact. We can make our minds and bodies available to follow God’s rule. We can receive Love’s blessing and work out our own salvation.

Divine Science rejects the following theories: (1) that all is matter or human mind; (2) that matter or the human mind originates in divine Mind and is as real as Mind, possessing intelligence and life. The first theory, that matter is everything, is about as illogical as the second, that Mind and matter coexist and cooperate. One only of the following statements can be true: (1) that everything is human mind; (2) that everything is divine Mind. Which one is it?

Human mind and divine Mind are opposites. One is contrary to the other in its very nature and essence, consequently, they both can’t be real. Only by understanding that there is but one power—not two powers—are scientific and logical conclusions reached. We must continue to admit that spiritual intelligence is apart from mortal beings and measurable energy. Spiritual intelligence is expressing and controlling the universe. Spiritual intelligence is synonymous with the eternal Mind or divine Principle, Love.

Luke 5:12-16

While [Jesus] was in one of the cities, there came a man full of leprosy. And when he saw Jesus, he fell on his face and begged him, “Lord, if you will, you can make me clean.” 13 And Jesus stretched out his hand and touched him, saying, “I will; be clean.” And immediately the leprosy left him. 14 And he charged him to tell no one, but “go and show yourself to the priest, and make an offering for your cleansing, as Moses commanded, for a proof to them.” 15 But now even more the report about him went abroad, and great crowds gathered to hear him and to be healed of their infirmities. 16 But he would withdraw to desolate places and pray.

The materialist milieu has a difficult time understanding spiritual Truth.

Some worshippers center thought on the material in an attempt to worship the spiritual. To these worshippers, the human doctrines, physical words, rituals, and worldly ways and means are substance, and Spirit is insubstantial. But, it is impossible to worship Spirit from the incompatible standpoints of human reverences and references. The people might appeal to their personal concepts or false gods, but their prayers bring no proof they were heard. We need to sufficiently understand God to demonstrate Spirit’s power to heal—to make harmony the reality and disorder the unreality.

If Truth is overcoming error in your daily walk and talk, you are a better person and can finally say, “I have fought the good fight, I have finished the race, I have kept the faith.”[1] This is having our part in the reconciliation with Truth and Love. Don’t continue working and praying as if someone else’s goodness, suffering, and triumph will cause you to reach their harmony and reward. There is no surrogate savior.

Save yourself as Jesus saved. Strive. Advance spiritually. Constantly turn away from the objects of the human mind and look toward the imperishable things of Spirit. If honest, you will be in earnest from the start and joyfully gain a little each day in the right direction. If persistent, you will make the transition from limited substance to the substantial unlimited.

Luke 6:27-32

After this [Jesus] went out and saw a tax collector named Levi, sitting at the tax booth. And he said to him, “Follow me.” 28 And leaving everything, he rose and followed him. 29 And Levi made him a great feast in his house, and there was a large company of tax collectors and others reclining at table with them. 30 And the Pharisees and their scribes grumbled at his disciples, saying, “Why do you eat and drink with tax collectors and sinners?” 31 And Jesus answered them, “Those who are well have no need of a physician, but those who are sick. 32 I have not come to call the righteous but sinners to repentance.”

The Pharisees’ accusations against Jesus were as self-contradictory as their religion. The bigot, the morally corrupt, and the hypocrite accused Jesus of being a glutton and drunk. They said: “By Beelzebub, the prince of demons, he is driving out demons,”[2] and he is “a friend of tax collectors and sinners.”[3] The last accusation was true, but not in their meaning. Jesus was no ascetic. He did not fast as John the Baptist’s disciples; yet there never lived a man so far removed from appetites and fixations. Jesus admonished sinners straightforwardly without flinching, because he was their friend; hence the cup he drank.

Jesus’ reputation differed from his character. Why? Because his divine Principle and practice were misunderstood. Jesus’ words and works were alien to the world’s expectations and contrary to the popular religious views. Mortals believed in God as humanly mighty, rather than as divine infinite Love.

Arrogance has nothing in Christ. Humility, honesty, and charity have divine authority. Mortals think wrongly, consequently they seem to work against themselves and others. They think sickly thoughts, and so become sick. If sin makes sinners, Truth and Love alone can unmake them. If a sense of disease produces suffering and a sense of ease antidotes suffering, disease is mental. Logic has it that human mind suffers, and that divine Mind alone heals.

The life of Christ Jesus was not miraculous but was indigenous to his spirituality—the good soil wherein the seed of Truth is heard, understood, and found producing a great crop.[4] Spirituality is the consistent link of scientific being, connecting all space and time in the design of Love. Weakness, illusion, and unruliness do not exist in divine Science.

By employing our spiritual senses, we change for the better and feel regenerated.

We can follow Jesus’ divine example and permit spirituality to replace all ill-doing—even disease. We can’t escape the consequences for wrongdoing.

Jesus instructed his disciples to heal the sick through the unchanging Mind instead of changing minds. He knew that the philosophy, Science, and proof of spirituality were in Truth, overcoming all disorders and confusion.

The human mind must struggle to interpret correctly the discomfort that Jesus inspired and the spiritual blessings that might flow from this type of discomfort that oftentimes produces a shock.

Humbly, Jesus confronted the ridicule thrown at him. His magnificence was unrecognized. Such indignities as he received, his followers will endure until spirituality’s last triumph. Jesus earned perpetual respect. He overcame the world, the flesh, and all error, thereby proving their nothingness.

Serving the Lord means work, but God is not authoritarian. It is joyously essential to follow the example of the Teacher and his apostles.

Following Jesus’ sayings and demonstrations, we help our self to overcome the flesh. The sordid and narrow beliefs which originate in mortals are hell. Spiritual individuals are the idea of Spirit, reflecting the presence of virtue and illuming the universe with light. Spirituality is deathless, above sin or frailty. We do not cross over into the vast forever of Life, but we coexist with God and the universe. Complete and infinite Mind ordained is heaven.
