Golden text: Psalm 35:1, 5*

Contend, O Lord, with those who contend with me;
fight against those who fight against me!
Let them be like chaff before the wind,
with the angel of the Lord driving them away!

Job 1:1, 8

There was a man in the land of Uz whose name was Job, and that man was blameless and upright, one who feared God and turned away from evil.

And the Lord said to Satan, “Have you considered my servant Job, that there is none like him on the earth, a blameless and upright man, who fears God and turns away from evil?”

Job 2:7-11

So Satan went out from the presence of the Lord and struck Job with loathsome sores from the sole of his foot to the crown of his head. And he took a piece of broken pottery with which to scrape himself while he sat in the ashes. Then his wife said to him, “Do you still hold fast your integrity? Curse God and die.” 10 But he said to her, “You speak as one of the foolish women would speak. Shall we receive good from God, and shall we not receive evil?” In all this Job did not sin with his lips. 11 Now when Job’s three friends heard of all this evil that had come upon him, they came each from his own place, Eliphaz the Temanite, Bildad the Shuhite, and Zophar the Naamathite. They made an appointment together to come to show him sympathy and comfort him.

Human experience in mortal life starts from a cell and corresponds with that of Job, when he says, “Man born of woman is of few days and full of trouble.”[1] Mortals must break out of this mental cycle of thinking that material life is all-in-all. They must think outside of the box with divine Science and look to the infinite cosmos. Be aware though, that thought which escapes the box and has not yet been instructed by the Science of Truth and Love, may become wild with freedom and so be self-contradictory.

Mortal theories make friends of sin, sickness, and death; whereas the spiritual scientific facts of existence include no aspect of that depressing trio.

No remedy for depression, sin, and death comes from the bottom-up. The redeeming power is not in a cell, a physical force, chemicals, or human mind. Material energy is a materialization of mortal mind. The process of mortal mind is such that it manifests itself but is eventually urged to its furthest limits, only to return to its original stance. Hybrid plants are a good illustration. A hybrid pushed out of its boundaries, will revert back to the parent plant. Matter will always surrender its claims when the perfect and eternal Mind is understood.

Job 12:1-3

Then Job answered and said:

“No doubt you are the people,
and wisdom will die with you.
But I have understanding as well as you;
I am not inferior to you.

Job 13:23-25

How many are my iniquities and my sins?
Make me know my transgression and my sin.
24 Why do you hide your face
and count me as your enemy?
25 Will you frighten a driven leaf
and pursue dry chaff?
21st Century Science and Health

To human sense, sin and suffering are real, but spiritual sense includes no evil or epidemic. Look to spiritual mind which has no error of sense, no sense of error, and no destructive element.

Who will say whether Truth or error is greater? Are brains, nerves, and stomachs intelligent? If they talk to us, tell us their condition and report how they feel then the immutable and mutable, or Truth and error, commingle and produce sickness and health, good and evil, life and death.

Mythology and human philosophies have perpetuated the fallacy that intelligence, soul, and life can be divided and confined, and thereby materialized. Idolatry and ritualism are the outcome of all human-made beliefs. The Science of spirituality comes with tool in hand to separate the chaff from the wheat. Science will declare God aright, and Christianity will demonstrate this declaration and its divine Principle, making humankind better physically, morally, and spiritually.

  1. C. Cole, in her book, Mind over Matter: Conversations with the Cosmos,[2] challenges readers to expand their thinking away from limited concepts. Biologists and astrophysicists describe the origin of human and material existence in various ways. They accompany their descriptions with important observations such as the mapped genome or the string theory. But why don’t these observations awaken thought to a higher and purer contemplation of our origin? Genetic modification doesn’t cure the cause of disease. Human thought must obtain a better basis, get nearer the truth of being, or health will never be universal, and harmony will never become the standard. A clearer consciousness must precede an understanding of the harmony of being.

Job 21:15-18

What is the Almighty, that we should serve him?
And what profit do we get if we pray to him?’
16 Behold, is not their prosperity in their hand?
The counsel of the wicked is far from me.

17 “How often is it that the lamp of the wicked is put out?
That their calamity comes upon them?
That God distributes pains in his anger?
18 That they are like straw before the wind,
and like chaff that the storm carries away?

Job 27:1-4

And Job again took up his discourse, and said: “As God lives, who has taken away my right, and the Almighty, who has made my soul bitter, as long as my breath is in me, and the spirit of God is in my nostrils, my lips will not speak falsehood, and my tongue will not utter deceit.

Job 42:10

And the Lord restored the fortunes of Job, when he had prayed for his friends. And the Lord gave Job twice as much as he had before.

In this final struggle for supremacy, semi-metaphysical systems offer no substantial aid to scientific metaphysics. Arguments based on the false testimony of the physical senses as well as on the facts of Mind, savor confusion, disorder, pandemonium, a house divided against its self.[3]

From premise to conclusion, to suppose that eternal Mind and temporal human mind, or good and evil, coexist, is to agree with the philosophy of the serpent[4] as read about in the Bible. Jesus’ demonstrations sift the chaff from the wheat,[5] and unfold the oneness and reality of good. The nothingness of evil becomes apparent in the presence of infinite good.

Human philosophy made God humanlike. Divine Science makes us Godlike. Human philosophy is error. Divine philosophy or metaphysics is truth. Metaphysics is above physics. Materialist thinking does not enter metaphysical premises or conclusions. Metaphysics resolves things into thoughts and exchanges the objects of sense for the ideas of Soul.

Sorrow has its reward. It leaves us in a different place from where it found us. Unhappiness dissolves if our outlook is expanded and purified. The furnace separates the gold from the dross that the precious metal may be graven with the image of God. It is life-giving to learn the lessons God teaches.

It may seem vain to share our love with someone who doesn’t give it back, but it isn’t a waste as long as we allow spiritual Love to enlarge, purify, and elevate the circumstance. If spite, revenge, and arrogance uproot and scatter our affections, this separation of fleshly ties serves to unite thought more closely to God, for Love supports the struggling heart until it ceases to sigh over the world and unfolds its wings to soar for heaven.

Relationships are blessed, or not, according to the expectations involved and fulfilled.

Immortal ideas are perfectly real and tangible to spiritual consciousness, plus they have the advantage over the objects and thoughts of limited senses because they are good and eternal.

Matthew 3:1, 11-13

In those days John the Baptist came preaching in the wilderness of Judea,

11 “I baptize you with water for repentance, but he who is coming after me is mightier than I, whose sandals I am not worthy to carry. He will baptize you with the Holy Spirit and fire. 12 His winnowing fork is in his hand, and he will clear his threshing floor and gather his wheat into the barn, but the chaff he will burn with unquenchable fire.” 13 Then Jesus came from Galilee to the Jordan to John, to be baptized by him.

21st Century Science and Health

When will we expose the error of believing there is life in mortality? When will we expose the error of believing sin and sickness are creations of God? When will it be understood that the inventions of human mind have no intelligence, life, or sensation? When will it be known that the prolific source of all suffering is the insistence that material stuff has life and intelligence? God created all through Mind and made all perfect and eternal.

Spirit’s baptism washes the body of all fleshly impurities and shows that the pure in heart see God. We approach spiritual Life and its demonstration through purity.

Suffering, imprisonment, and destruction are not natural disciplinarians. The whole human family can be redeemed through the excellence of Christ—through the perception and acceptance of Truth. For this magnificent result, Christian or divine Science lights the torch of spiritual understanding.

It is “easier for a camel to go through the eye of a needle,”[6] than for materialist convictions to enter the kingdom of heaven, eternal harmony. Through repentance, spiritual baptism, and reformation, humanity advances past beliefs and false individuality.

Our baptism is purification from all erroneous thinking.

Learn the meaning of God or good, and the nature of the immutable and immortal. Don’t worry when breaking away from mutating time and feelings, because you will not lose your sense of reality or your sense of identity. As you contemplate divine life, consciousness is being purified and groomed to experience the celestial.
