Golden text: Isaiah 12:2

“Behold, God is my salvation; I will trust, and will not be afraid; for the Lord God is my strength and my song, and he has become my salvation.”

II Kings 1:1-8, 17

After the death of Ahab, Moab rebelled against Israel.

Now Ahaziah fell through the lattice in his upper chamber in Samaria, and lay sick; so he sent messengers, telling them, “Go, inquire of Baal-zebub, the god of Ekron, whether I shall recover from this sickness.” But the angel of the Lord said to Elijah the Tishbite, “Arise, go up to meet the messengers of the king of Samaria, and say to them, ‘Is it because there is no God in Israel that you are going to inquire of Baal-zebub, the god of Ekron? Now therefore thus says the Lord, You shall not come down from the bed to which you have gone up, but you shall surely die.’” So Elijah went.

The messengers returned to the king, and he said to them, “Why have you returned?” And they said to him, “There came a man to meet us, and said to us, ‘Go back to the king who sent you, and say to him, Thus says the Lord, Is it because there is no God in Israel that you are sending to inquire of Baal-zebub, the god of Ekron? Therefore you shall not come down from the bed to which you have gone up, but you shall surely die.’” He said to them, “What kind of man was he who came to meet you and told you these things?” They answered him, “He wore a garment of hair, with a belt of leather about his waist.” And he said, “It is Elijah the Tishbite.”

The widespread belief in physics, which sustains medicine and produces all medical results, works against divine Science. The percentage of power on the side of this Science must mightily outweigh the power of popular belief in order to heal metaphysically a single case of disease. The human mind can offset the discords of matter and the ills of flesh by giving less power to physics and more to spirituality.

For right reasoning, there should be but one fact before the thought, namely, spiritual being. In reality, there is no other existence, since Life cannot be united to its unlikeness, mortality.

Being is holiness, harmony, immortality. It is already proved that knowledge of this, even in a small degree, will improve the physical and moral standard of human beings, will increase longevity, and will purify and elevate character. Progress will finally destroy all error and bring immortality to light. Statements proved to be good must be correct. New thoughts are constantly breaking human laws. The two contradictory theories—that human mind is something, or that all is Mind—will fight it out until one is acknowledged the victor. Calling the people to arms, Winston Churchill said: “Our task is not only to win the battle—but to win the war.”[1] Science says: All is Mind and Mind’s idea. You must fight it out to the end. Matter, human mind, is of no help in this war.

The notion that mind and matter can mix in the human illusion of sin, sickness, and death must eventually submit to the Science of Mind which denies the notion. God is Mind, and God is infinite; and so all is Mind. On this statement rests the Science of being, and the Principle of this Science is divine, demonstrating harmony and spirituality.

The conservative theory embedded into society’s belief system, is that there are two factors, the measurable and the immeasurable, uniting on some impossible basis. This theory would keep error and truth always at war without a victory for either side. But divine Science shows Truth triumphant. We no longer contradict the heliocentric theory of the solar system, even though earth appears stationary and even though the physical senses don’t want to admit they are wrong. What does this tell us? All the evidence and knowledge obtained from physical senses must yield to Science, to the immortal truth of all things.

II King 1: 9-12

Then the king sent to him a captain of fifty men with his fifty. He went up to Elijah, who was sitting on the top of a hill, and said to him, “O man of God, the king says, ‘Come down.’” 10 But Elijah answered the captain of fifty, “If I am a man of God, let fire come down from heaven and consume you and your fifty.” Then fire came down from heaven and consumed him and his fifty.

11 Again the king sent to him another captain of fifty men with his fifty. And he answered and said to him, “O man of God, this is the king’s order, ‘Come down quickly!’” 12 But Elijah answered them, “If I am a man of God, let fire come down from heaven and consume you and your fifty.” Then the fire of God came down from heaven and consumed him and his fifty.

Fire. Fear: remorse; lust; hatred; destruction; affliction purifying and elevating humanity.

The history of Christianity furnishes sublime proofs of the supporting influence and protecting power bestowed on us by our heavenly Father-Mother.

II Kings 1:13-17

13 Again the king sent the captain of a third fifty with his fifty. And the third captain of fifty went up and came and fell on his knees before Elijah and entreated him, “O man of God, please let my life, and the life of these fifty servants of yours, be precious in your sight. 14 Behold, fire came down from heaven and consumed the two former captains of fifty men with their fifties, but now let my life be precious in your sight.” 15 Then the angel of the Lord said to Elijah, “Go down with him; do not be afraid of him.” So he arose and went down with him to the king 16 and said to him, “Thus says the Lord, ‘Because you have sent messengers to inquire of Baal-zebub, the god of Ekron—is it because there is no God in Israel to inquire of his word?—therefore you shall not come down from the bed to which you have gone up, but you shall surely die.’”

17 So he died according to the word of the Lord that Elijah had spoken. Jehoram became king in his place in the second year of Jehoram the son of Jehoshaphat, king of Judah, because Ahaziah had no son.

The Science of mental practice is susceptible of no misuse. Self-centeredness does not appear in the practice of Truth or Christ’s Science. If mental practice is abused or is used in any way except to promote right thinking and doing, the power to heal mentally will diminish until the practitioner’s healing ability is completely lost. Scientific practice begins with Christ’s keynote of harmony, “Do not be afraid!”[2]

Homeopathy diminishes the drug, but the potency of the medicine increases as the drug disappears. Herbs, homeopathy, and alternative health treatments have diminished drugging; but if drugs are an antidote to disease, why lessen the antidote? If drugs are good things, why not take more? What makes drugs beneficial or harmful for human beings? Why not simply learn that the strength and remedial qualities of drugs are mental.

A case of edema, given up by the doctors, fell into my hands. It was a terrible case. The patient was awfully swollen. Tapping had been employed. I prescribed a homeopathic remedy. She improved a little bit. I then found out her former doctor had prescribed the same remedy and I became afraid that a prolonged use of this medicine may aggravate her symptoms; and I also was still learning to trust God. I told her it would be better not to take her medicine, but she was unwilling to give it up. It then occurred to me to give her a placebo and watch the result. I did so, and she continued to improve. Then, she said that she would give up her medicine for one day, and risk the effects. After trying this, she informed me that she could get along two days without medicine; but on the third day she suffered and was relieved by taking the placebo. She continued taking the placebo, receiving occasional visits from me—using no other means—and she was cured.

Metaphysics, as aligned with Christly logic and Truth, is the next advanced step beyond holistic methods. In metaphysics, matter and human mind disappear from the remedy entirely and Mind takes its rightful and supreme place. Holistic methods take mental symptoms into consideration in its diagnosis of disease, but divine Science deals wholly with the mental cause in judging and destroying disease. It succeeds where holistic methods fail because the one recognized Principle of healing is Mind, and the whole force of the mental element is employed through the Science of Mind, which never shares its rights with inanimate matter.

Divine Science eliminates the drug and rests on Mind alone as the curative Principle, acknowledging that the divine Mind has all power.

John 14:25-27

[Jesus said] 25 “These things I have spoken to you while I am still with you. 26 But the Helper, the Holy Spirit, whom the Father will send in my name, he will teach you all things and bring to your remembrance all that I have said to you. 27 Peace I leave with you; my peace I give to you. Not as the world gives do I give to you. Let not your hearts be troubled, neither let them be afraid.

In a world where sin and sensuality scramble to rise in the ranks of power, it is wise earnestly to consider whether we are being influenced by the human mind or the divine Mind. Beware of ingenious human-made devices that merely claim to equal the work of wisdom.

Epiphanies that should startle the trance-like thinker out of its erroneous dream are neglected. The last trump has yet to sound. Marvels, disasters, and sin will increase to urge human beings to stop resisting the claims of Truth. The awful daring of sin destroys itself and foreshadows the triumph of truth. God will overturn, until “He comes whose right it is.”[3] Longevity is increasing and the power of sin diminishing, for the world feels the renewing effect of truth through every pore.

As the crude footprints of the past disappear from the dissolving paths of the present, we shall better understand the Science which governs these changes and stand on firmer ground. Every sensuous pleasure or pain is self-destroyed through suffering. There can be painless progress, attended by life and peace instead of disorder and death.

In the annals of Christianity, there are many sects but not enough spirituality. With pomp and ceremony, religionists called on an anthropomorphic God, but this is not the manner of truth’s appearing. Of old the cross was truth’s central sign, and it is so today. The modern whip is less material than back in the day, but it is equally cutting. Cold contempt, stubborn resistance, church opposition, state laws, and the press, still try to stop truth’s full-orbed appearing.

A higher and more practical Christianity, demonstrating justice and meeting the needs of human beings in sickness and in health, stands at the door of this age knocking for admission. Will you open or close the door upon this angel visitor? Will you welcome the angel who comes quietly and unpretentiously?
