Golden text: Psalm 98:1*

Oh sing to the Lord a new song, for he has done marvelous things! His right hand and his holy arm have worked salvation for him.

Haggai 1:7-11, 14-15

“Thus says the Lord of hosts: Consider your ways. Go up to the hills and bring wood and build the house, that I may take pleasure in it and that I may be glorified, says the Lord. You looked for much, and behold, it came to little. And when you brought it home, I blew it away. Why? declares the Lord of hosts. Because of my house that lies in ruins, while each of you busies himself with his own house. 10 Therefore the heavens above you have withheld the dew, and the earth has withheld its produce. 11 And I have called for a drought on the land and the hills, on the grain, the new wine, the oil, on what the ground brings forth, on man and beast, and on all their labors.”

14 And the Lord stirred up the spirit of Zerubbabel the son of Shealtiel, governor of Judah, and the spirit of Joshua the son of Jehozadak, the high priest, and the spirit of all the remnant of the people. And they came and worked on the house of the Lord of hosts, their God, 15 on the twenty-fourth day of the month, in the sixth month, in the second year of Darius the king.

It is not safe to build on false foundations. Truth makes a new creature, where “old things passed away; behold, new things have come.”[1] Obsessions, selfishness, misleading appetites, hatred, fear, and lust give way to spirituality, and the superabundance of being is on the side of God, good.

We cannot fill vessels already full. Vessels full of the impracticable must first be emptied. Let us strip off error and stand in the showers of God and come clean.

The way to extract error from human mind is to pour in truth through flood-waters of Love. Spiritual perfection, including Christian perfection, is won on no other basis.

Does God create anew what Life already created? Nothing is new to God. The Scriptures are definite on this point, declaring that God’s work is finished,[2] and it is good.[3]

God is not the creator of an evil mind. Indeed, evil is not Mind. We must learn that evil is the awful deception and unreality of existence. Evil is not supreme; good is not helpless; nor are the so-called physical laws primary and the law of Spirit secondary. Without these lessons, we lose sight of the perfect Source or divine Principle of spiritual selfhood.

Luke 5:36-39

[Jesus] also told them a parable: “No one tears a piece from a new garment and puts it on an old garment. If he does, he will tear the new, and the piece from the new will not match the old. 37 And no one puts new wine into old wineskins. If he does, the new wine will burst the skins and it will be spilled, and the skins will be destroyed. 38 But new wine must be put into fresh wineskins. 39 And no one after drinking old wine desires new, for he says, ‘The old is good.’

Divine Science explains all cause and effect as mental, not physical. It lifts the veil of mystery from Soul and body. Science shows the scientific relation of person to God and unravels the interwoven ambiguities of being, setting free the imprisoned thought. In divine Science, the universe, including individuals, is spiritual, harmonious, and eternal. Science shows that what is termed matter is but the subjective state of what I term human mind.

Human mind is a grammatical error in language, and involves an improper use of the word mind. As Mind is spiritual, the phrase human mind implies something untrue and therefore unreal. In this teaching of divine Science, the phrases human mind, human energy, chemically based mind, mortal or materialistic mind are meant to designate that which has no real existence. Certainly, if better words or phrases existed today, they would be used. In expressing the new tongue, we must sometimes resort to the old and imperfect, and the new wine of Spirit is poured into the old wineskins[4] of the letter.

Apart from the usual opposition to everything new, the one great obstacle to receiving spirituality through which the understanding of Mind-science comes, is the inadequacy of terminology for metaphysical statements. It is difficult to make metaphysical ideas comprehensible to the reader who has not personally demonstrated divine Science as brought forth in my discovery. Job says: “The ear tests words as the tongue tastes food.”[5] When translating material terms back into the original spiritual tongue, it is difficult to give the correct impression.

Jesus’ history made a new calendar which we call the Christian era, but he established no ceremonial worship. He knew that people can be baptized, take sacrament, support the ministry, study Bible lessons, make long prayers, and yet be corrupt and sensual.

We need to become familiar with original Bible texts and be willing to give up misinterpretations established by hierarchies or instigated by the worst human passions. Familiarity with texts opens the way for divine Science to be understood and makes the Bible the map of life where the healing steps of Truth are pointed out.

As “the arm of the Lord”[6] is revealed, people will believe our report and rise to newness of life with regeneration. This is having part in the atonement and in the understanding of why Jesus suffered and triumphed. The time is nearer than we think, when human-made theologies, such as a superior race, everlasting damnation, or fundamentalisms will diminish, and equality, mindfulness, and individual responsibility will increase.

The harmony of spiritual oneness is felt as the differing elements join naturally with each other. All persons, regardless of gender, should be forgiving, chaste, bold, tender, and strong. The attraction between these spiritual qualities will be perpetual only as they are pure, true, and constantly renewed like the returning springtime.

II Corinthians 3:4-6, 12-17

Such is the confidence that we have through Christ toward God. Not that we are sufficient in ourselves to claim anything as coming from us, but our sufficiency is from God, who has made us sufficient to be ministers of a new covenant, not of the letter but of the Spirit. For the letter kills, but the Spirit gives life.

12 Since we have such a hope, we are very bold, 13 not like Moses, who would put a veil over his face so that the Israelites might not gaze at the outcome of what was being brought to an end. 14 But their minds were hardened. For to this day, when they read the old covenant, that same veil remains unlifted, because only through Christ is it taken away. 15 Yes, to this day whenever Moses is read a veil lies over their hearts. 16 But when one turns to the Lord, the veil is removed. 17 Now the Lord is the Spirit, and where the Spirit of the Lord is, there is freedom. 18 And we all, with unveiled face, beholding the glory of the Lord, are being transformed into the same image from one degree of glory to another. For this comes from the Lord who is the Spirit.

With due respect to advanced thinkers in all fields of study and work, here are some statements to consider:

“The materials we need to reach a new level of discourse are in our grasp; we have only to abandon outmoded approaches/disciplines to achieve an enlightening beginning for a new science.” From The Anthropology of Medicine: From Culture to Method, Third Edition.[7]

“The Starting Point of Biblical Theology: We have already observed that every scholarly endeavor inevitably is based upon presuppositions.”[8] HarperCollins Bible Dictionary.

“We physicians often pay lip service to the importance of the mind in health and illness, yet in practice we equate it with the brain. This is obvious in our reliance on drugs when mental problems arise…A refreshing contrast is alternative or complementary medicine, which has emerged as a major social force shaping medical care in the United States.” From Reinventing Medicine: Beyond Mind/Body to a New Era of Healing.[9]

Matthew 19:28-30

Jesus said to them, “Truly, I say to you, in the new world, when the Son of Man will sit on his glorious throne, you who have followed me will also sit on twelve thrones, judging the twelve tribes of Israel. 29 And everyone who has left houses or brothers or sisters or father or mother or children or lands, for my name’s sake, will receive a hundredfold and will inherit eternal life. 30 But many who are first will be last, and the last first.

21st Century Science and Health

I was called to visit Mr. Clark in Lynn, who had been confined to his bed six months with hip-disease. On entering the house, I met his physician who said that the patient was dying. The physician had probed the ulcer on the hip, told me the bone was decayed for several inches and showed me the evidence. The doctor went out. Mr. Clark lay with his eyes fixed and sightless. The dew of death was on his brow. I went to his bedside. In a few moments, his face changed; its death-pallor gave place to a natural hue. The eyelids closed gently and the breathing became natural; he was asleep. In about ten minutes he opened his eyes and said: “I feel like a new man. My suffering is all gone.” It was between three and four o’clock in the afternoon when this took place.

I told him to get up, dress himself, and eat supper with his family. He did so. The next day I saw him in the yard. Since then I have not seen him, but am informed that he went to work in two weeks. The discharge from the sore stopped and the sore was healed. The diseased condition had been there ever since he was a boy when he had injured himself after falling on a wooden spike.

As our consciousness of the eternal replaces the consciousness of time, we literally could grow no older. This idea is symbolized from an empirical point of view since we know cell divisions take place in each living being continuously, practically creating new bodies. Old cells in our bodies die and yield to newly formed cells, signaling an ongoing identity.

There can be but one creator, who has created all. Whatever seems to be a new creation is only the discovery of some distant idea of Truth; or else it is a self-division of mortal thought. The human mind is not an originator, but is a mime, an ape, attempting to mimic the divine infinite.

The effects of spiritual Science are not so much seen as felt. It is the “gentle whisper”[10] of Truth expressing itself. We are either neglecting this expression or we are attentive to it and being improved by it. Willingness to become as little children[11] and to leave the old for the new, prepares thought to receive the advanced idea. To cheerfully leave behind the false imprints and contentedly let them disappear, is the attitude that helps to precipitate the ultimate harmony. The purification of feelings and intent is a proof of progress. “Blessed are the pure in heart, for they will see God.”[12]
