Golden text: Luke 4:24-26*
24 And [Jesus] said, “Truly, I say to you, no prophet is acceptable in his hometown. 25 But in truth, I tell you, there were many widows in Israel in the days of Elijah, when the heavens were shut up three years and six months, and a great famine came over all the land, 26 and Elijah was sent to none of them but only to Zarephath, in the land of Sidon, to a woman who was a widow.
I Kings 17:1-7
Now Elijah the Tishbite, of Tishbe in Gilead, said to Ahab, “As the Lord, the God of Israel, lives, before whom I stand, there shall be neither dew nor rain these years, except by my word.” 2 And the word of the Lord came to him: 3 “Depart from here and turn eastward and hide yourself by the brook Cherith, which is east of the Jordan. 4 You shall drink from the brook, and I have commanded the ravens to feed you there.” 5 So he went and did according to the word of the Lord. He went and lived by the brook Cherith that is east of the Jordan. 6 And the ravens brought him bread and meat in the morning, and bread and meat in the evening, and he drank from the brook. 7 And after a while the brook dried up, because there was no rain in the land.

The breaking up of material beliefs may seem to be famine and pestilence, deficit and depression, sin, sickness, and death, assuming new phases until their nothingness appears. These disturbances will continue until the end of error when all disorder will be swallowed up in spiritual Truth.
The understanding that the Ego, I AM, is Mind, and that there is but one Mind or intelligence, begins at once to destroy the errors of human sense and to supply the truth of spiritual sense. This understanding makes the body harmonious; it makes the nerves, bones, brain, etc., servants, instead of masters. If humanity is governed by the law of divine Mind, the body is obedient to everlasting Life and Truth and Love. The great mistake of human beings is to suppose that God’s image and likeness is both quantifiable and unquantifiable, both evil and good.
Food affects the body only as fleshly mind has its methods of working, one such method being the belief that proper food supplies nutriment and strength to the human system. Another method is believing we have little or no self-control.
This new-born understanding that neither food nor the stomach, without the consent of human mind, can make us suffer, brings with it another lesson, that self-indulgence, gluttony, or bulimia, are sensual illusions and can’t give satisfaction. These phantasms disappear as we better understand our spiritual existence and walk the line of a balanced life.
The human mind’s methods for health never gets it right, whereas Truth regenerates this fleshly mind and feeds thought with the bread of Life.
Consciousness in the likeness of Truth is inevitably immortal. The grass withers and the flower fades, however, they reappear. Erase the figures which express numbers, silence the tones of music, give human persons to bacteria, and yet the producing, governing divine Principle lives on, in the case of people as truly as in the case of numbers and music. All this is true despite the laws of human mind which define people as mortal. Although limited perspectives hide the harmony of Science, they can’t destroy the divine Principle of Science. In Science, our indestructibility depends upon God, good, and follows as a necessary consequence of the immortality of good.
I Kings 17:8-16
Then the word of the Lord came to [Elijah], 9 “Arise, go to Zarephath, which belongs to Sidon, and dwell there. Behold, I have commanded a widow there to feed you.” 10 So he arose and went to Zarephath. And when he came to the gate of the city, behold, a widow was there gathering sticks. And he called to her and said, “Bring me a little water in a vessel, that I may drink.” 11 And as she was going to bring it, he called to her and said, “Bring me a morsel of bread in your hand.” 12 And she said, “As the Lord your God lives, I have nothing baked, only a handful of flour in a jar and a little oil in a jug. And now I am gathering a couple of sticks that I may go in and prepare it for myself and my son, that we may eat it and die.” 13 And Elijah said to her, “Do not fear; go and do as you have said. But first make me a little cake of it and bring it to me, and afterward make something for yourself and your son. 14 For thus says the Lord, the God of Israel, ‘The jar of flour shall not be spent, and the jug of oil shall not be empty, until the day that the Lord sends rain upon the earth.’” 15 And she went and did as Elijah said. And she and he and her household ate for many days. 16 The jar of flour was not spent, neither did the jug of oil become empty, according to the word of the Lord that he spoke by Elijah.

It is most beneficial to become more familiar with good than with evil. We can guard against false beliefs as diligently as we bolt our doors against the approach of thieves and murderers. We should love our enemies and help them on the basis of the Golden Rule, “Do to others what you would have them do to you.” Avoid throwing “your pearls to pigs,” because if you do everyone loses out.
Spiritual involvement heals, while material attachment interferes with truth. Ritualism and creed stifle spirituality. If we trust materiality, we distrust Spirit.
Obedience to truth gives us power and strength.
The bread or truth, is explained or broken, and shared with others, to feed, sustain, and comfort.
Most of us have met someone considered old but very much young in thought and action. Many are interviewed and questioned. Are they lucky? Is it their genes? Is it the food they eat? Maybe or maybe not, however, they usually always attribute their longevity to a positive and loving attitude. They have an awareness of good-will and ongoing life—not an awareness of stages with beginnings and endings.
Oil. Dedication; altruism; gentleness; prayer; heavenly inspiration.
I Kings 17:17-24
After this the son of the woman, the mistress of the house, became ill. And his illness was so severe that there was no breath left in him. 18 And she said to Elijah, “What have you against me, O man of God? You have come to me to bring my sin to remembrance and to cause the death of my son!” 19 And he said to her, “Give me your son.” And he took him from her arms and carried him up into the upper chamber where he lodged, and laid him on his own bed. 20 And he cried to the Lord, “O Lord my God, have you brought calamity even upon the widow with whom I sojourn, by killing her son?” 21 Then he stretched himself upon the child three times and cried to the Lord, “O Lord my God, let this child’s life come into him again.” 22 And the Lord listened to the voice of Elijah. And the life of the child came into him again, and he revived. 23 And Elijah took the child and brought him down from the upper chamber into the house and delivered him to his mother. And Elijah said, “See, your son lives.” 24 And the woman said to Elijah, “Now I know that you are a man of God, and that the word of the Lord in your mouth is truth.”

We are taught that mortals come from cells. Expert scientists admit this, but add that human beings have evolved through all the lower grades of cell organization. Physical evolution describes the evolving stages of human thinking, but it does not acknowledge the method of divine Mind, it does not see that material methods are impossible in Science, it does not admit that all Science is of God, not of human beings.
Naturalists ask: “How does DNA control all of life’s developments?” The question amounts to this: How can matter originate or transmit mind? We answer that it can’t. Naturalists also say that the physical seed must decay in order to propagate its species, while the resulting seed is doomed to the same routine. Darkness and doubt surround thought as long as it bases creation on physics, biology, time, or space. From a human standpoint, “Can you fathom the mysteries of God?” Everything must be unchangeable Mind, or else everything must be changeable matter. Neither can produce the other. Mind is immortal.
No one knows if the first chicken was created as a chicken or if it came from an egg. What about the beginning of the universe? Did the big bang blow life into being? If so, who or what produced the big bang? Idolatrous philosophies, modern geology, synthetic biology, and all other material hypotheses deal with causation as contingent on human minds, material energy, or time. Cause is also treated as necessarily apparent to the physical senses, even when the evidence to sustain their assumptions goes undiscovered. Mortal theories make friends of sin, sickness, and death; whereas the spiritual scientific facts of existence include no aspect of that depressing trio.
Human experience in mortal life starts from a cell and corresponds with that of Job, when he says, “Man born of woman is of few days and full of trouble.” Mortals must break out of this mental cycle of thinking that material life is all-in-all. They must think outside of the box with divine Science and look to the infinite cosmos. Be aware though, that thought which escapes the box and has not yet been instructed by the Science of Truth and Love, may become wild with freedom and so be self-contradictory.
Jesus foresaw that the Science of Truth would be disregarded before it was understood. His foreknowing wasn’t an obstacle. He completed his God-mission and then sat down at the right hand of God. Jesus’ apostles still went about, moving from city to city doing good deeds although they were envied, hated, and stoned. Jesus’s teachings were scoffed by religious elders because the teachings demanded more than the officials were willing to practice.
At certain times, we see spirituality again demonstrating the power of divine Principle, as it did over twenty centuries ago, by healing the sick. Jesus never taught that drugs, food, air, and exercise could make people healthy. Jesus also didn’t teach or practice that drugs, food, air, and exercise could destroy human life. Harmony is assigned to Mind, not to divisible energy.
Children. The spiritual thoughts and representatives of Life, Truth, and Love.
God is individual and personal in a scientific sense, but not in any anthropomorphic sense. God’s children can’t lose their individuality. We lose sight of our spiritual individuality because of limited perceptions and the blinding belief that soul is in the body. Human personality is myth; it is not the reflection or likeness of Spirit. To think that flesh can tell us how to feel is not bliss, but bondage. For true happiness, man and woman must harmonize with Principle, and the child must synchronize with the Father-Mother and be in conformity with Christ. According to divine Science, person is as complete as the Mind that forms. The truth of spiritual existence makes us harmonious and fulfilled. The error of material existence makes us discordant and unfulfilled.
God, the divine Principle of our spirituality, and person in Mind’s likeness are inseparable, harmonious, and undying. God is the parent Mind, and God’s children are spiritual offspring.
Eternal Truth is changing the universe and physical forces are trying to keep up. Don’t be impressed by views that support physical forces. Instead, experience spiritual thought expanding into expression. “Let there be light,” is the perpetual demand of Truth and Love, changing chaos into order and discord into the music of the spheres.
