Subject: Appeal to Spirit
Golden text: James 1:12*
Blessed is the man who remains steadfast under trial, for when he has stood the test he will receive the crown of life, which God has promised to those who love him.
And as [Jesus] sat on the Mount of Olives opposite the temple, Peter and James and John and Andrew asked him privately, 4 “Tell us, when will these things be, and what will be the sign when all these things are about to be accomplished?” 5 And Jesus began to say to them, “See that no one leads you astray. 6 Many will come in my name, saying, ‘I am he!’ and they will lead many astray. 7 And when you hear of wars and rumors of wars, do not be alarmed. This must take place, but the end is not yet. 8 For nation will rise against nation, and kingdom against kingdom. There will be earthquakes in various places; there will be famines. These are but the beginning of the birth pains.
9 “But be on your guard. For they will deliver you over to councils, and you will be beaten in synagogues, and you will stand before governors and kings for my sake, to bear witness before them. 10 And the gospel must first be proclaimed to all nations. 11 And when they bring you to trial and deliver you over, do not be anxious beforehand what you are to say, but say whatever is given you in that hour, for it is not you who speak, but the Holy Spirit. 12 And brother will deliver brother over to death, and the father his child, and children will rise against parents and have them put to death. 13 And you will be hated by all for my name’s sake. But the one who endures to the end will be saved.

Suppose a mental case to be on trial, as cases are tried in court. A man is charged with having committed liver disease [while taking care of a sick friend]. The patient feels ill, ruminates, and the trial commences. Physical Sensation is the plaintiff. Human Being is the defendant. False Belief is the attorney for Physical Sensation. Human Mortal Minds, Materia Medica, Anatomy, Psychotherapy, Physiology, Hypnotism, Envy, Greed and Ingratitude, constitute the jury. The court-room is filled with curious spectators and Judge Medicine is on the bench.
The evidence for the prosecution being called for, a witness testifies thus:
I am Death. I was called for shortly after the report of the crime by the officer of the Board of Health. The officer alleged that the prisoner had abused him and that my presence was required to confirm his testimony. One of the prisoner’s friends, Materia Medica, was present when I arrived, endeavoring to assist the prisoner to escape from the hands of justice, alias the Rule of Death. However, my appearance with a message from the Board of Health changed the purpose of Materia Medica, and it was decided at once that the prisoner should die.
In compliance with a stern duty, his Honor Judge Medicine, urges the jury not to allow their judgment to be warped by the irrational, unchristian suggestions of Christian Science. The jury must regard in such cases only the evidence of Physical Sensation against Human being.
The case is given to the jury. A brief consultation ensues, and the jury returns a verdict of “Guilty of liver disease in the first degree.”
Ah! But Christ, Truth, the spirit of Life and the friend of Human Being, can open wide those prison doors and set the captive free. Swift on the wings of divine Love, there comes an appeal: “Delay the execution; the prisoner is not guilty.” Consternation fills the prison-yard. Some exclaim, “It is contrary to law and justice.” Others say, “The law of Christ supersedes our laws; let us follow Christ.”
You did me no wrong. 13 You know it was because of a bodily ailment that I preached the gospel to you at first, 14 and though my condition was a trial to you, you did not scorn or despise me, but received me as an angel of God, as Christ Jesus. 15 What then has become of your blessedness? For I testify to you that, if possible, you would have gouged out your eyes and given them to me. 16 Have I then become your enemy by telling you the truth? 17 They make much of you, but for no good purpose. They want to shut you out, that you may make much of them. 18 It is always good to be made much of for a good purpose, and not only when I am present with you, 19 my little children, for whom I am again in the anguish of childbirth until Christ is formed in you!

Christian Science turned from the humiliated witnesses, words flashing as lightning in the perturbed faces of these worthies, Scholastic Theology, Materia Medica, Physiology, blind Hypnotism, and the disguised Physical Sensation, and said:
God will smite you, O whited walls, for injuring in your ignorance the unfortunate Human Being who sought your aid in his struggles against liver disease and death. You came to his rescue only to fasten upon him an offence of which he was innocent. You aided and abetted Fear and Health-laws. You betrayed Human Being, meanwhile declaring Disease to be God’s servant and the righteous executor of spiritual laws.
Your Material Court of Errors, when it condemned Human Being on the ground of not following the health rules, was manipulated by the suave scheming of the counsel, False Belief, whom Truth arraigns before the supreme bar of Spirit to answer for his crime. Morbid Secretion is taught how to make sleep befool reason before sacrificing mortals to their false gods.
Human Minds were deceived by your attorney, False Belief, and were influenced to give a verdict delivering Human Being to Death. Good deeds are transformed into crimes, to which you attach penalties; but no warping of justice can render disobedience to the so-called laws of Mindless Matter as disobedience to God, or an act of homicide. Even penal law holds homicide under stress of circumstances, to be justifiable. Now what greater justification can any deed have than for the good of one’s neighbor? Wherefore, then, in the name of outraged justice, do you sentence Human Being for ministering to the wants of his neighbor in obedience to divine law? You cannot trample on the decree of the Supreme Bench. Human Being has his appeal to Spirit, God, who sentences only for sin.
The false and unjust reasoning of your human mental legislators compel them to enact wicked laws of sickness and so forth, and then render obedience to these laws punishable as crime. In the presence of the Supreme Lawgiver, standing at the bar of Truth and in accordance with the divine statutes, I repudiate the false testimony of Physical Sensation. I ask that he be forbidden to enter against Human Being any more suits to be tried at the Court of Material Error. I appeal to the just and equitable decisions of divine Spirit to restore to Human Being the rights of which he has been deprived.
I consider the days of old,
the years long ago.
6 I said, “Let me remember my song in the night;
let me meditate in my heart.”
Then my spirit made a diligent search:
7 “Will the Lord spurn forever,
and never again be favorable?
8 Has his steadfast love forever ceased?
Are his promises at an end for all time?
9 Has God forgotten to be gracious?
Has he in anger shut up his compassion?” Selah
10 Then I said, “I will appeal to this,
to the years of the right hand of the Most High.”
11 I will remember the deeds of the Lord;
yes, I will remember your wonders of old.
12 I will ponder all your work,
and meditate on your mighty deeds.
13 Your way, O God, is holy.
What god is great like our God?
14 You are the God who works wonders;
you have made known your might among the peoples.

Here, the counsel for the defense closed and the Chief Justice of the Supreme Court, with benign and imposing presence, comprehending and defining all law and evidence, explained from his statue-book, the Bible, that any so-called law which undertakes to punish anything but sin is null and void.
Truth cannot be reversed, but the reverse of error is true. An improved conviction cannot retrograde. When Christ, Truth, changes a human mortal conviction of sin or sickness into a better conviction, then thought melts into spiritual understanding and sin, disease, and fear disappear. Truth, Love, gives human beings temporary food and clothing until the temporal, transformed with the ideal, disappears, and we are clothed and fed spiritually.
The demands of God appeal to thought only; but the claims of mortality and what are termed laws of nature, appertain to thoughtless matter. Which, then, are we to accept as legitimate and capable of producing the highest human good? We cannot obey both biology and Spirit. We pay attention to one or the other. It is impossible to work from two standpoints. If we attempt it, we will, “be devoted to the one and despise the other.”
The theories of human beings are antagonistic to Science and cannot mix with it. This is clear to those who heal the sick on the basis of divine Science.
Mind’s government of the body must supersede the laws set down in human minds.
The conservative theory embedded into society’s belief system, is that there are two factors, the measurable and the immeasurable, uniting on some impossible basis. This theory would keep error and truth always at war without a victory for either side. But divine Science shows Truth triumphant. We no longer contradict the heliocentric theory of the solar system, even though earth appears stationary and even though the physical senses don’t want to admit they are wrong. What does this tell us? All the evidence and knowledge obtained from physical senses must yield to Science, to the immortal truth of all things.
The notion that mind and matter can mix in the human illusion of sin, sickness, and death must eventually submit to the Science of Mind which denies the notion. God is Mind, and God is infinite; and so all is Mind. On this statement rests the Science of being, and the Principle of this Science is divine, demonstrating harmony and spirituality.
To enter the realm of Spirit, our anchor of hope must be thrown past the veil of matter into the Shekinah that Jesus showed us. This advance beyond superficial thinking comes through the joys and triumphs of the righteous as well as through their sorrows and afflictions. We must leave mortal impressions of fleshly being and advance into immortal impressions of spiritual being.
