Golden text: Malachi 2:10*

Have we not all one Father? Has not one God created us? Why then are we faithless to one another, profaning the covenant of our fathers?

Ezra 1:1-5

In the first year of Cyrus king of Persia, that the word of the Lord by the mouth of Jeremiah might be fulfilled, the Lord stirred up the spirit of Cyrus king of Persia, so that he made a proclamation throughout all his kingdom and also put it in writing:

“Thus says Cyrus king of Persia: The Lord, the God of heaven, has given me all the kingdoms of the earth, and he has charged me to build him a house at Jerusalem, which is in Judah. Whoever is among you of all his people, may his God be with him, and let him go up to Jerusalem, which is in Judah, and rebuild the house of the Lord, the God of Israel—he is the God who is in Jerusalem. And let each survivor, in whatever place he sojourns, be assisted by the men of his place with silver and gold, with goods and with beasts, besides freewill offerings for the house of God that is in Jerusalem.”

Then rose up the heads of the fathers’ houses of Judah and Benjamin, and the priests and the Levites, everyone whose spirit God had stirred to go up to rebuild the house of the Lord that is in Jerusalem.

Have a mindful interest in one another’s progress and reciprocate appreciation in a relationship.

It’s impossible to return to physical or mental human conditions after leaving them. An acorn, after having dropped to the ground and sprouted, will never return to its pervious condition. The germinated seed has a new form and a different state of existence. When here or hereafter the belief of temporality is extinct, the error which has held the belief dissolves with the belief and never returns to the old condition.

The caterpillar transformed into a beautiful butterfly is no longer a worm. The butterfly doesn’t return to fraternize with or control the worm. Such a retrograde transformation is impossible in Science. Darkness and light, infancy and adulthood, sickness and health, are opposites—different beliefs which never blend. Who will say that infancy can articulate the ideas of adulthood or that darkness can represent light? There is no bridge across the gap which divides such opposite conditions as the spiritual and the physical.

In divine knowledge, there is never a backward step, never a return to positions outgrown.

Ezra 3:1-6, 10-13

When the seventh month came, and the children of Israel were in the towns, the people gathered as one man to Jerusalem. Then arose Jeshua the son of Jozadak, with his fellow priests, and Zerubbabel the son of Shealtiel with his kinsmen, and they built the altar of the God of Israel, to offer burnt offerings on it, as it is written in the Law of Moses the man of God. They set the altar in its place, for fear was on them because of the peoples of the lands, and they offered burnt offerings on it to the Lord, burnt offerings morning and evening. And they kept the Feast of Booths, as it is written, and offered the daily burnt offerings by number according to the rule, as each day required, and after that the regular burnt offerings, the offerings at the new moon and at all the appointed feasts of the Lord, and the offerings of everyone who made a freewill offering to the Lord. From the first day of the seventh month they began to offer burnt offerings to the Lord. But the foundation of the temple of the Lord was not yet laid.

When human beliefs lack organizations for support, their foundations disappear. Not having moral might, spiritual basis, or a holy Principle of its own, a belief mistakes effect for cause and seeks to find life and intelligence in symptoms, thus limiting Life and adhering to disorder and death. Human beliefs are blind conclusions made from baseless reasoning. A mortal sense of things is forever silenced by immortal Spirit.

We can interpret and understand the universe and its inhabitants through Science by its divine Principle, God. But, when explained on the basis of physical sense and represented as exposed to change, accumulation and decay, the universe and its inhabitants are enigmas.

Gravitational, electromagnetic, and nuclear forces are properties of Mind. They belong to divine Principle and support the equilibrium of that same thought-force which launched the earth in its orbit and said to the proud wave, “this far you may come and no farther.”[1]

Spirit is the life, substance, and continuity of all things. We move on forces. Human knowledge calls the forces electromagnetic or physical, but withdraw them and creation must collapse. Divine Science restores the forces by classifying them spiritually and declaring them inherently and wholly to belong to divine Mind.

Trustworthiness is the foundation of enlightened faith. Without a fitness for holiness, we can’t receive holiness.

Ezra 3:10-13

10 And when the builders laid the foundation of the temple of the Lord, the priests in their vestments came forward with trumpets, and the Levites, the sons of Asaph, with cymbals, to praise the Lord, according to the directions of David king of Israel. 11 And they sang responsively, praising and giving thanks to the Lord,

“For he is good,
for his steadfast love endures forever toward Israel.”

And all the people shouted with a great shout when they praised the Lord, because the foundation of the house of the Lord was laid. 12 But many of the priests and Levites and heads of fathers’ houses, old men who had seen the first house, wept with a loud voice when they saw the foundation of this house being laid, though many shouted aloud for joy, 13 so that the people could not distinguish the sound of the joyful shout from the sound of the people’s weeping, for the people shouted with a great shout, and the sound was heard far away.

The chain of material evolution is a conundrum. If we came from a single-celled organism, why do we still have single-celled organisms and monkeys? Did the chain of material evolution break at some point? Spirit certainly can’t form a link in a chain of material being. Divine Science reveals the eternal chain of existence as uninterrupted and wholly spiritual. Spirituality can only be realized as the false sense of being disappears.

If we ever were material beings, we must have passed through all the forms of matter to be where we are now. Were we once a part of dirt? The belief that Soul is in material bodies obtains in and entertains human minds, to which the apostle refers when he says that we must “put off your old self, which is being corrupted by its deceitful desires.”[2] Our true self is the image and likeness of Spirit.

How can the temporal brain, heart, blood, DNA, etc. be our identity? If our real nature is the bodily structure, a portion of our being would be gone if a limb was amputated; or a surgeon could remove our manhood or womanhood; or bacteria would annihilate our existence. What happens to the identity of an organ recipient? How can DNA be the foundation of our identity when it mutates and replicates? After a person is gone their DNA is still here on earth, so where is the individual? On another note, people have repeatedly proven that the loss of a limb cannot take away their intelligence and stature. Many people, classified as disabled, have presented more nobility, more manliness and womanliness, than the polished athlete or glamour model—teaching society that true identity and nature comes from spirituality, divine consciousness.

John 19:5-7

So Jesus came out, wearing the crown of thorns and the purple robe. Pilate said to them, “Behold the man!” When the chief priests and the officers saw him, they cried out, “Crucify him, crucify him!” Pilate said to them, “Take him yourselves and crucify him, for I find no guilt in him.” The Jews[a] answered him, “We have a law, and according to that law he ought to die because he has made himself the Son of God.”

If God were understood instead of only believed, this understanding would establish health. Jesus was accused, “because he claimed to be the Son of God,”[3] but he used the accusation to justify the true Godlike spirit. The godly thought impels a more exalted worship and self-discipline. Spiritual perception brings out the possibilities of being and destroys reliance on anything accept God. Action and thought were made to image forth our Maker.

Self-worship is denser than a solid body. In patient obedience to a patient God, let us labor to dissolve with the universal solvent of Love the clotted mass of error. Let us work to bankrupt self-will, self-justification, and self-worship. Don’t invest in mortality with its errors that compete against spirituality.

John 4:19-24

The woman said to [Jesus], “Sir, I perceive that you are a prophet. 20 Our fathers worshiped on this mountain, but you say that in Jerusalem is the place where people ought to worship.” 21 Jesus said to her, “Woman, believe me, the hour is coming when neither on this mountain nor in Jerusalem will you worship the Father. 22 You worship what you do not know; we worship what we know, for salvation is from the Jews. 23 But the hour is coming, and is now here, when the true worshipers will worship the Father in spirit and truth, for the Father is seeking such people to worship him. 24 God is spirit, and those who worship him must worship in spirit and truth.”

The legacy of the tribe of Judah shows that beliefs engendering a national theology or political religion are the antithesis of true Christianity. Narrow systems and theories concerning God, human beings, health, and a religious society, are restrictive. The argument that accused Jesus of “making himself equal with God,”[4] is the same argument that resists a Christianity built on the foundation of Spirit. Jesus taught as he was inspired by the Maker and would recognize no life, intelligence, or substance outside God.

Father. Eternal Life; the one Mind; the divine Principle, commonly called God.

We worship spiritually only as we cease to worship materially. The devotion to Spirit is the soul of spirituality. Worshipping through the medium of human personalities is not productive. Human-made rituals are but types and shadows of true worship. “The true worshippers will worship the Father in spirit and truth.”[5]

We should consecrate existence, not “to an unknown God” whom we “worship as something unknown,”[6] but to the eternal builder, the everlasting Father, to the life which mortal sense or human logic cannot disable or destroy. We must realize the ability of mental might to offset human misconceptions and to replace them with the life which is spiritual, not limited.
