Subject: Fair heart

Golden text: Leviticus 19:17-18*

“You shall not hate your brother in your heart, but you shall reason frankly with your neighbor, lest you incur sin because of him. 18 You shall not take vengeance or bear a grudge against the sons of your own people, but you shall love your neighbor as yourself: I am the Lord.”

Amos 5:14-15, 21-24**

Seek good and not evil— and live!
You talk about God, the God-of-the-Angel-Armies, being your best friend.
Well, live like it, and maybe it will happen. 15 Hate evil and love good,
then work it out in the public square.
Maybe God, the God-of-the-Angel-Armies,
will notice your remnant and be gracious.

21-24 “I can’t stand your religious meetings.
I’m fed up with your conferences and conventions.
I want nothing to do with your religion projects,
your pretentious slogans and goals. I’m sick of your fund-raising schemes,
your public relations and image making. I’ve had all I can take of your noisy ego-music. When was the last time you sang to me?
Do you know what I want?
I want justice—oceans of it.
I want fairness—rivers of it.
That’s what I want. That’s all I want.

To discover our progress, we must learn to what we are attached. What do we acknowledge and obey as power? If divine Love is becoming nearer, dearer, and more real to us, then hate and fear are submitting to Spirit. The goals we pursue and the spirit we manifest reveal our standpoint and show what we are winning.

Divine understanding removes misleading evidence that points to other gods or powers, such as genetics, hate, and minds arguing against the one Spirit.

Human mind is the acknowledged seat of human motives; it designs limited concepts and produces all bodily malfunctions. Action proceeding from erring human mind is inappropriate and ends in sin, sickness, and failure. Appropriate action proceeds from the divine Mind. Those two opposite thought sources never mingle in cause or effect. Imperfect human mind projects outward its own imperfections of which the wise man said, “Everything is meaningless.”[1] The perfect Mind expresses perfection. God is meaningful Mind.

You do not say a moving vehicle is fatigued or stressed; and yet the body is as material as the vehicle. The body is as weary as the human mind claims. The consciousness of Truth rejuvenates us more than hours of unconsciousness.

The body assumes to say, “I am ill.” The reports of sickness may form a coalition with reports of sin, and say, “I am revenge, lust, appetite, envy, hate.” Sin and sickness are difficult to cure because the human mind is the sinner and refuses self-correction.

Without the temporal mind, systems cannot break down or become inflamed. Remove the error in thought and you destroy its effects. A person’s gaze, fastened fearlessly on a ferocious beast, often causes the beast to retreat in terror. By meeting hateful prejudice with fearless love, Martin Luther King, Jr.[2] sent hate to its own defeat. These occurrences represent the power of Truth over error. Exercise the power of intelligence to displace unintelligent behavior. The application of spiritual intelligence can also cause threatening situations to self-destruct.

John 15:18-27*

[Jesus said,] “If the world hates you, know that it has hated me before it hated you. 19 If you were of the world, the world would love you as its own; but because you are not of the world, but I chose you out of the world, therefore the world hates you. 20 Remember the word that I said to you: ‘A servant is not greater than his master.’ If they persecuted me, they will also persecute you. If they kept my word, they will also keep yours. 21 But all these things they will do to you on account of my name, because they do not know him who sent me. 22 If I had not come and spoken to them, they would not have been guilty of sin, but now they have no excuse for their sin. 23 Whoever hates me hates my Father also. 24 If I had not done among them the works that no one else did, they would not be guilty of sin, but now they have seen and hated both me and my Father. 25 But the word that is written in their Law must be fulfilled: ‘They hated me without a cause.’ 26 “But when the Helper comes, whom I will send to you from the Father, the Spirit of truth, who proceeds from the Father, he will bear witness about me. 27 And you also will bear witness, because you have been with me from the beginning.

Jesus was unselfish. His spirituality made it possible for Jesus to heal the sick, drive out evil, and raise the dead. His spiritual identity was distinct from the unspiritual minded and this caused the selfish materialist to hate him.

While declaring the power of divine Spirit, we will feel haunted by a resistance to Truth. People who follow Christ will run up against the hatred of sinners until “wisdom is proved right by her actions.”[3] We can take to heart the blessed benedictions attributed to Jesus: “If the world hates you, keep in mind that it hated me first;”[4]  “Surely I am with you always”[5]—that is, not only in all time, but in all ways and conditions.

Our individuality is no less tangible because it is spiritual. We are not at the mercy of human energies. The understanding of our spiritual individuality makes us more real, more awe-inspiring in truth, and more able to conquer sin, disease, and devastation.

A germ of infinite Truth, though least in the realm of heaven, is the higher hope on earth, but it will be rejected and hated until God prepares the soil for the seed.

Christian Science is sometimes disapproved of because it claims God as the only absolute Life and Soul, and person to be God’s idea—that is, Spirit’s image. However, Scriptures confirm the claim, saying that God created “man” (a generic term for person given in many Bible versions), “in our image, in our likeness.”[6] Is it sacrilegious to theorize that God’s likeness is not found in fleshly beings, sinful, sick, and dying? In reality, the person referred to as God’s image represents the normal, healthful, and sinless condition of individuals in divine Science.

Were it more fully understood that Truth heals and error causes disease, maybe opponents of a demonstrable Science would mercifully withhold their harmful misrepresentations. Until the opponents of divine Science test the efficacy of its rules, it would be fair to observe the Scriptural precept, “Do not judge.”[7]

Justice declares the presence of law. Injustice declares the absence of law. When the body says, “I am sick,” never plead guilty. Since organs can’t talk, it must be human mind which speaks. Disease has no intelligence to declare itself something and announce its name. Human mortal mind alone sentences itself. Therefore, make your own terms with sickness and be just to yourself and to others. You can meet the statement, “I am sick,” with a protest, but be fair to others if you need to tell them that you have a contagious illness.

Mentally contradict every complaint from the body. Evolve into the spiritual consciousness of Life as Love—as all that is pure, and bearing the fruits of Spirit.

II Corinthians 8:8-15

I say this not as a command, but to prove by the earnestness of others that your love also is genuine. For you know the grace of our Lord Jesus Christ, that though he was rich, yet for your sake he became poor, so that you by his poverty might become rich. 10 And in this matter I give my judgment: this benefits you, who a year ago started not only to do this work but also to desire to do it. 11 So now finish doing it as well, so that your readiness in desiring it may be matched by your completing it out of what you have. 12 For if the readiness is there, it is acceptable according to what a person has, not according to what he does not have. 13 For I do not mean that others should be eased and you burdened, but that as a matter of fairness 14 your abundance at the present time should supply their need, so that their abundance may supply your need, that there may be fairness. 15 As it is written, “Whoever gathered much had nothing left over, and whoever gathered little had no lack.”

Civilization and Science stand strong on the side of justice and encourage the elimination of discrimination, however, every time an effort is made to remedy unfairness, we must make sure that the effort doesn’t encourage difficulties of greater magnitude somewhere else. Higher aims and motives, as well as improved mental character, must be considered as the feasible and rational means of progress.

Truth, spiritually discerned, is scientifically understood. It replaces error and heals the sick

We think that we are healed when a disease disappears, though it is liable to reappear. We are never thoroughly healed until the liability to be ill is removed. Mortal mind is the distant, near, and quickening cause of all suffering. The cause of disease must be obliterated through Truth in divine Science, otherwise the physical senses will get the victory.

Unless an ill is rightly met and fairly overcome by Truth, the ill is never conquered. If God does not destroy sin, sickness, and decay, they are not destroyed in the mind of human beings and seem to be immortal. We do not need to attempt to do what God can’t do. If God doesn’t heal the sick, they are not healed, for no lesser power equals the infinite All-power; however, God, Truth, Life, Love, does heal the sick through the prayer of the righteous.

The beautiful, whole, and pure constitute our ancestry. Our origin is not like that of mortals, programmed to pass through human stages prior to reaching intelligence. Spirit is our primordial and ultimate source of being. God is our Father-Mother, and Life is the law of our being.

With absolute Love, nature and God are one, law is spiritual and the natural order of heaven comes to earth.
