Golden text: Eccl. 1*

There’s nothing new on this earth.

I Kings 12: 1-11

1-2 Rehoboam traveled to Shechem where all Israel had gathered to inaugurate him as king. Jeroboam had been in Egypt, where he had taken asylum from King Solomon; when he got the report of Solomon’s death he had come back.

3-4 Rehoboam assembled Jeroboam and all the people. They said to Rehoboam, “Your father made life hard for us—worked our fingers to the bone. Give us a break; lighten up on us and we’ll willingly serve you.”

“Give me three days to think it over, then come back,” Rehoboam said.

King Rehoboam talked it over with the elders who had advised his father when he was alive: “What’s your counsel? How do you suggest that I answer the people?”

They said, “If you will be a servant to this people, be considerate of their needs and respond with compassion, work things out with them, they’ll end up doing anything for you.”

8-9 But he rejected the counsel of the elders and asked the young men he’d grown up with who were now currying his favor, “What do you think? What should I say to these people who are saying, ‘Give us a break from your father’s harsh ways—lighten up on us’?”

10-11 The young turks he’d grown up with said, “These people who complain, ‘Your father was too hard on us; lighten up’—well, tell them this: ‘My little finger is thicker than my father’s waist. If you think life under my father was hard, you haven’t seen the half of it. My father thrashed you with whips; I’ll beat you bloody with chains!’”

Evil is sometimes believed to our right until we learn its self-destructiveness.

We learn that the demands of mortal knowledge are harsh, and have in reality neither place nor power in the human or the divine economy.

Sin is the image of the beast to be wiped out through mental improvement. It can be an agonizing ordeal. Don’t fall into the moral foolishness that rushes around chaotically, makes annoying demands, or loud complaints. We can become secure in civility and goodness.

Be accountable, hope and work, willingly act on divine guidance, not private interests. Divine guidance will either force a graceful change or calm the enraged atmosphere.

To the physical senses, the strict demands of divine Science seem final. However, humanity is quickly learning that Life is God, faithful good.

The counsel of Love recognizes and respects only the divine control of Spirit, of which Soul is our master and human mindsets have no place.

I Kings 12: 12-14, 16-17

12-14 Three days later Jeroboam and the people showed up, just as Rehoboam had directed when he said, “Give me three days to think it over, then come back.” The king’s answer was harsh and rude. He spurned the counsel of the elders and went with the advice of the younger set, “If you think life under my father was hard, you haven’t seen the half of it. My father thrashed you with whips; I’ll beat you bloody with chains!”

16-17 When all Israel realized that the king hadn’t listened to a word they’d said, they stood up to him and said,

Get lost, David!
We’ve had it with you, son of Jesse!
Let’s get out of here, Israel, and fast!
From now on, David, mind your own business.

And with that, they left. But Rehoboam continued to rule those who lived in the towns of Judah.

We can be saved from the bureaucratic and rote systems of today’s Pharaohs. The disabled, the deaf, the dumb, the depressed, the visually impaired, the sick, the sensualist, the sinner, can be saved from the terrors of their own beliefs. Don’t waste your years away by serving an unreal master telling you that the body governs you rather than Mind. You can break the bondage, however you must then press on with faith in God through an awful conflict, the Red Sea and the wilderness, as you trust Truth, the strong deliverer, to guide your thought into the land of divine Science. In this divine land or state of consciousness, limitations are overcome and your rights are known and acknowledged.

Oppressive civil laws are disputed and human beings are taught their right to freedom. From this same standpoint, backward mental laws can be disputed. All self-sabotaging mortal laws must be denied and succeeded. The law of the divine Mind must end human repression or human beings will continue to be unaware of their inalienable rights. People are prone to hopeless obsessions and anguish because public teachers permit an unawareness of divine power.

God has built a higher platform of human rights, on divine claims. These claims are not made through human regulations or creeds, but in demonstration of “Peace upon earth among men of goodwill!”[1] Human policies, scholastic theology, and inconsistent health care systems, divide and scatter faith and spiritual understanding. Divine Science comes to the rescue and our birthright of sole allegiance to our Maker asserts itself.

I Kings 12:25-31

25 Jeroboam made a fort at Shechem in the hills of Ephraim, and made that his headquarters. He also built a fort at Penuel.

26-27 But then Jeroboam thought, “It won’t be long before the kingdom is reunited under David. As soon as these people resume worship at The Temple of God in Jerusalem, they’ll start thinking of Rehoboam king of Judah as their ruler. They’ll then kill me and go back to King Rehoboam.”

28-30 So the king came up with a plan: He made two golden calves. Then he announced, “It’s too much trouble for you to go to Jerusalem to worship. Look at these—the gods who brought you out of Egypt!” He put one calf in Bethel; the other he placed in Dan. This was blatant sin. Think of it—people traveling all the way to Dan to worship a calf!

31-33 And that wasn’t the end of it. Jeroboam built forbidden shrines all over the place and recruited priests from wherever he could find them, regardless of whether they were fit for the job or not. To top it off, he created a holy New Year festival to be held on the fifteenth day of the eighth month to replace the one in Judah, complete with worship offered on the Altar at Bethel and sacrificing before the calves he had set up there.

21st Century Science and Health

Existence continues to be a perception of divided body energies until the Science of being is reached. Erroneous methodologies and belief systems bring their own self-destruction both here and hereafter because mortal mind creates its own mortal conditions.

The time required for this dream of material life to disappear from consciousness, “No one knows, not even the angels in heaven, nor the Son, but only the Father.”[2] The time it takes for us to stop embracing delusive pleasures and pains will be drawn out or shortened, depending on the tenacity of error. Of what advantage is it to prolong the illusion either of a catatonic soul or of a dying sufferer trapped in a body? What is better, to add years to mortal life, or to add life to years?

Spiritual days will appear as mortality disappears, and they will reveal eternity, newness of Life, in which all erroneous conclusions forever disappear and thought accepts the divine infinite calculus.

A genuine sacrifice of the temporal must precede advanced spiritual understanding.

Hebrews 10:11-18

Every priest goes to work at the altar each day, offers the same old sacrifices year in, year out, and never makes a dent in the sin problem. As a priest, Christ made a single sacrifice for sins, and that was it! Then he sat down right beside God and waited for his enemies to cave in. It was a perfect sacrifice by a perfect person to perfect some very imperfect people. By that single offering, he did everything that needed to be done for everyone who takes part in the purifying process. The Holy Spirit confirms this: This new plan I’m making with Israel isn’t going to be written on paper, isn’t going to be chiseled in stone; This time “I’m writing out the plan in them, carving it on the lining of their hearts.” He concludes, I’ll forever wipe the slate clean of their sins. Once sins are taken care of for good, there’s no longer any need to offer sacrifices for them.

21st Century Science and Health

The advent of Jesus of Nazareth marked the first century of the Christian era, but Christ-spirit is without beginning of years or end of days. Throughout all generations both before and after the Christian era, the Christ, as the divine idea—the reflection of God—has come with some degree of power and grace to all prepared to receive the Messiah, or Truth. Abraham, Jacob, Moses, and the prophets caught glorious glimpses of Christ, which baptized these insightful people in the nature or essence of Love. The divine image, idea, or Christ was, is, and ever will be inseparable from the divine Principle, Truth. Jesus referred to this unity of his spiritual identity as so: “Before Abraham was born, I am!”[3] “I and the Father are one;”[4] “The Father is greater than I.”[5] The one Spirit includes all identities.

No one is physically healed in willful experimentation, any more than she or he is morally saved in or by sin. It is a mistake even to complain or to be angry over sin. To be whole, people must be better spiritually as well as physically. To be spiritual, we must forsake the temporal sense of things, turn away from the lies of false beliefs, look to Truth, and gather the facts of being from the divine Mind. The body improves under the same plan which perfects the thought. If health is not made evident under this plan, it proves that fear is controlling the body. This is the law of cause and effect or of like producing like.

Our moral agency is infringed upon until we see it’s all a big mistake, similar to the error of predestination. Doctrines that earmark our harmony as governed by physical conditions all our earthly days are fading. Matter, as mass or energy, is not superior to the law of Mind.

The understanding that Life is God, Spirit, extends our days by strengthening our trust in the deathless reality of Life, its almightiness and immortality.

The rays of infinite Truth, when gathered into the focus of ideas, bring light instantaneously, whereas a thousand years of human doctrines, hypotheses, and vague speculations don’t emit that kind of brilliance.
