Golden text: Proverbs 23:16-18*

My inmost being will exult when your lips speak what is right. 17 Let not your heart envy sinners, but continue in the fear of the Lord all the day. 18 Surely there is a future, and your hope will not be cut off.

Lamentations 1:1-9

How lonely sits the city that was full of people! How like a widow has she become, she who was great among the nations! She who was a princess among the provinces has become a slave.

She weeps bitterly in the night, with tears on her cheeks; among all her lovers she has none to comfort her; all her friends have dealt treacherously with her; they have become her enemies. Judah has gone into exile because of affliction and hard servitude; she dwells now among the nations, but finds no resting place; her pursuers have all overtaken her in the midst of her distress.

The roads to Zion mourn, for none come to the festival; all her gates are desolate; her priests groan; her virgins have been afflicted, and she herself suffers bitterly. Her foes have become the head; her enemies prosper, because the Lord has afflicted her for the multitude of her transgressions; her children have gone away, captives before the foe.

From the daughter of Zion all her majesty has departed. Her princes have become like deer that find no pasture; they fled without strength before the pursuer. Jerusalem remembers in the days of her affliction and wandering all the precious things that were hers from days of old. When her people fell into the hand of the foe, and there was none to help her, her foes gloated over her; they mocked at her downfall. Jerusalem sinned grievously; therefore she became filthy; all who honored her despise her, for they have seen her nakedness; she herself groans and turns her face away.

Her uncleanness was in her skirts; she took no thought of her future; therefore her fall is terrible; she has no comforter. “O Lord, behold my affliction, for the enemy has triumphed!”

To forecast your future according to the world, infringes on spiritual law and misguides your hopes. We are sustained under all circumstances as we have faith in the divine Principle of health and as we spiritually understand God. The ordinary appeal to have faith in the world’s ways and means must yield to faith in the all-might of infinite Spirit.

Throughout the infinite cycles of eternal existence, Spirit and matter never agree in person or in the universe.

The future history of material medicine may correspond with that of Apollo who was banished from heaven and endured great sufferings on earth. What we need is the truth which heals both mind and body.

Drugs, ointments, and narcotics are reckless substitutes for the dignity and potency of divine Mind and its effective healing power. It is pitiful to tempt human beings with addictive prescriptions. Why create victims who acquire an educated appetite for intoxicating treatments?

Evidence of progress and of spiritualization can definitely be seen in the world. People are realizing the power of mind. We are learning to question drug systems and surgical procedures. Less obtrusive drugs, alternative health care treatments, responsible eating, consistent exercise, and homeopathy are being pursued. The substance of medicine is being transferred from matter to mind.

Jeremiah 29:11

For I know the plans I have for you, declares the Lord, plans for welfare and not for evil, to give you a future and a hope.

Guard against some common religious opinions, such as a breakable relationship with God. If Life or Soul and its representative, person, unite for a period and then are separated as by a law of divorce, to be brought together again at some uncertain future time and in manner unknown, we are left without a rational proof of immortality. We can’t be separated for an instant from God, if reflecting God. Thus Science proves our spiritual being to be intact.

The plethora of human thought forms, apparently materialized, are not more distinct or real to the physical sense than are the Soul-created forms to spiritual sense. The senses of Spirit cognizes Life as permanent, and are undisturbed even amid the jarring testimony of the mortal senses. Christian Science is consistently revealing to human beings the perpetual divine Principle—is unfolding Life and the universe, ever present and eternal.

Matthew 8:28-34

And when [Jesus] came to the other side, to the country of the Gadarenes, two demon-possessed men met him, coming out of the tombs, so fierce that no one could pass that way. 29 And behold, they cried out, “What have you to do with us, O Son of God? Have you come here to torment us before the time?” 30 Now a herd of many pigs was feeding at some distance from them. 31 And the demons begged him, saying, “If you cast us out, send us away into the herd of pigs.” 32 And he said to them, “Go.” So they came out and went into the pigs, and behold, the whole herd rushed down the steep bank into the sea and drowned in the waters. 33 The herdsmen fled, and going into the city they told everything, especially what had happened to the demon-possessed men. 34 And behold, all the city came out to meet Jesus, and when they saw him, they begged him to leave their region.

The elements of the physical world and the functions of the physical body will change as human mind changes its beliefs. What is now considered the best condition for biological and functional health may no longer be found indispensable to health in the future. Moral conditions will always be found harmonious and health-giving. Biological inaction and over-action are not beyond God’s control. People will be found normal and natural as mortal thought grows out of the states which human belief creates and sanctions.

As human thought changes from one stage to another, from conscious pain to painlessness, from sorrow to joy, from fear to hope, and from faith to understanding, the visible manifestation will at last be self-governed by Soul. Reflecting God’s control, you are no longer controlled by physical sense or mind. When subordinate to the divine Spirit, we cannot be controlled by sin or death, thus proving our material theories about laws of health to be valueless.

The astronomer no longer looks up to the stars—but looks out from them upon the universe. The florist finds the flower before its seed. Every cell can be seen before its multiplication. The seasons will come and go with changes of time and tide, cold and heat, latitude and longitude. Farmers will find that these changes can’t affect the crops. “Like clothing You will change them and they will be changed.”[1] The navigator can have dominion over the weather, over the great deep, over the fish of the sea and the fowls of the air. Time will not affect life.

I Corinthians 3:14-23

If the work that anyone has built on the foundation survives, he will receive a reward. 15 If anyone’s work is burned up, he will suffer loss, though he himself will be saved, but only as through fire.

16 Do you not know that you are God’s temple and that God’s Spirit dwells in you? 17 If anyone destroys God’s temple, God will destroy him. For God’s temple is holy, and you are that temple.

18 Let no one deceive himself. If anyone among you thinks that he is wise in this age, let him become a fool that he may become wise. 19 For the wisdom of this world is folly with God. For it is written, “He catches the wise in their craftiness,” 20 and again, “The Lord knows the thoughts of the wise, that they are futile.” 21 So let no one boast in men. For all things are yours, 22 whether Paul or Apollos or Cephas or the world or life or death or the present or the future—all are yours, 23 and you are Christ’s, and Christ is God’s.

To obey the Scriptural command, “Come out from their midst and be separate,”[2] is to invite society’s disapproval; but this disapproval, more than approval, enables one to be spiritual. Pope John Paul II said, “We cannot live for the future without intuiting that the meaning of life is greater than temporality and is above it. If the societies and the men of our continent have lost interest in such a meaning, they must rediscover it.”[3] The Biblical Paul realized, “If God is for us, who can be against us?”[4]

The would-be healer is obligated not to bring hypocrisy, stupidity, inhumanity, or bad habits into the patient’s environment. If these traits were present, the environment would be converted into a “den of robbers.”[5] The un-Christ-like practitioner does not give to mind or body the joy and strength of Truth. Vanity and negativity desecrate the temple of the Holy Spirit, and the patient’s spiritual power to resuscitate themselves is damaged. The poor suffering heart needs its spiritual nutriment, such as peace, patience in distress, and a priceless sense of the dear Father-Mother’s loving-kindness.

Jesus said: “These signs will accompany those who believe: . . . they will place their hands on sick people, and they will get well.”[6] Who believes him? He was addressing his disciples, yet he did not say, these signs will follow you, but those—“those who believe” in all time to come.

The complicated creations of human thought must finally give place to the glorious forms which we sometimes glimpse through the eye of divine Mind when the mental picture is spiritual and eternal. Take the time to look past the fading, sensational pictures. Gain the true sense of life. Rest your gaze on the unsearchable realm of Mind. Look ahead and act as possessing all power from Truth and Love in whom you have your being.
