Golden text: Hebrews 4:12*

For the word of God is living and active, sharper than any two-edged sword, piercing to the division of soul and of spirit, of joints and of marrow, and discerning the thoughts and intentions of the heart.

Numbers 20:14-21

Moses sent messengers from Kadesh to the king of Edom: “Thus says your brother Israel: You know all the hardship that we have met: 15 how our fathers went down to Egypt, and we lived in Egypt a long time. And the Egyptians dealt harshly with us and our fathers. 16 And when we cried to the Lord, he heard our voice and sent an angel and brought us out of Egypt. And here we are in Kadesh, a city on the edge of your territory. 17 Please let us pass through your land. We will not pass through field or vineyard, or drink water from a well. We will go along the King’s Highway. We will not turn aside to the right hand or to the left until we have passed through your territory.” 18 But Edom said to him, “You shall not pass through, lest I come out with the sword against you.” 19 And the people of Israel said to him, “We will go up by the highway, and if we drink of your water, I and my livestock, then I will pay for it. Let me only pass through on foot, nothing more.” 20 But he said, “You shall not pass through.” And Edom came out against them with a large army and with a strong force. 21 Thus Edom refused to give Israel passage through his territory, so Israel turned away from him.

Sword. The idea of Truth; justice; Revenge; anger.

Critics who attack faith should be careful not to confuse spiritual faith with blind faith. Faith is necessary in science, medicine, and religion. Consider the researcher or scientist who is trying to find a cure for cancer; they obviously have faith that a cure exists; otherwise they would not even try. People who cannot distinguish between blind (ritualistic) faith and that of spiritual faith are easily misinformed. They can make unfortunate statements such as: “If your beliefs are those of a Christian Scientist, obliging you to forgo all medical interventions, you may even have collaborated with God by refusing to give your child antibiotics.”[1] Christian Science does not “oblige” any particular human action as if people are androids.  A student of Christian Science does not collaborate with God as if God is a separate mind. In Science, there is no attitude of give-and-take; there is no human element that says, “If you do this, I’ll do that.” Do physicists collaborate with the law of gravity in order to go to the moon? No. Scientists study the principles of physics, they have the faith those rules will work, they apply the principles, and they go to the moon. Comments and condemnations based on a lack of research obscure any good points being made.

If Mind, Life, is foremost and superior, you can rely on Mind, which doesn’t need any cooperation from lower powers. The lower powers are real to the human mind, but divine Mind, Love, ultimately prevails.

As the sun rises in the east

So He shall split the eastern sky[2]

The John Templeton Foundation seeks to promote a deeper understanding of the influence spirituality, beliefs and values can have on human health. By promoting collaboration and clinical research into the relationship between spirituality and health, and by documenting the positive medical aspects of spiritual practice, the Foundation hopes to contribute to the reintegration of faith into modern life. This is an example of how the advancement of spiritual discoveries is not only being encouraged, but also is helping to offset the world’s tendency to attribute physical effects to physical causes rather than to a spiritual cause. Divine Science is meeting humanities desire for spirituality.

Matthew 26:1-2, 47-53

When Jesus had finished all these sayings, he said to his disciples, “You know that after two days the Passover is coming, and the Son of Man will be delivered up to be crucified.”

47 While he was still speaking, Judas came, one of the twelve, and with him a great crowd with swords and clubs, from the chief priests and the elders of the people. 48 Now the betrayer had given them a sign, saying, “The one I will kiss is the man; seize him.” 49 And he came up to Jesus at once and said, “Greetings, Rabbi!” And he kissed him. 50 Jesus said to him, “Friend, do what you came to do.” Then they came up and laid hands on Jesus and seized him. 51 And behold, one of those who were with Jesus stretched out his hand and drew his sword and struck the servant of the high priest and cut off his ear. 52 Then Jesus said to him, “Put your sword back into its place. For all who take the sword will perish by the sword. 53 Do you think that I cannot appeal to my Father, and he will at once send me more than twelve legions of angels?

“All who draw the sword will die by the sword.”[3] Let Truth uncover and destroy error in God’s own way, and let human justice imitate the divine. Sin will receive its full penalty, both for what it is and for what it does. Justice marks the sinner, and teaches human beings not to remove the ways and means of God.

To envy’s own hell, justice consigns the lie which, to advance itself, breaks God’s commandments.

The spiritual ability to comprehend thought and to heal by the Truth-power is won only as we are found reflecting the divine nature. Put in other words, self-glorification, arrogance, anger, and the like, are not found in Truth healing.

Humanity’s dependence on the relentless passions, selfishness, envy, hatred, and revenge—is beaten only by a mighty struggle. Every hour of delay makes the struggle more severe. If someone can’t stop the negative human elements from taking over their thought—happiness, health, and courage will be crushed. Here divine Science is the universal remedy, giving strength to the weakness of human mind. Spiritual and omnipotent Mind not only gives energy, but also lifts humanity above itself into purer desires, even into spiritual power and good-will to humankind.

The “man of sorrows”[4] best understood two main points: the insubstantiality of temporal life and intelligence, and the substantial actuality of all-inclusive God, good. These points of Mind-healing, or divine Science, armed him with Love.

Ephesians 6:10-18

Finally, be strong in the Lord and in the strength of his might. 11 Put on the whole armor of God, that you may be able to stand against the schemes of the devil. 12 For we do not wrestle against flesh and blood, but against the rulers, against the authorities, against the cosmic powers over this present darkness, against the spiritual forces of evil in the heavenly places. 13 Therefore take up the whole armor of God, that you may be able to withstand in the evil day, and having done all, to stand firm. 14 Stand therefore, having fastened on the belt of truth, and having put on the breastplate of righteousness, 15 and, as shoes for your feet, having put on the readiness given by the gospel of peace. 16 In all circumstances take up the shield of faith, with which you can extinguish all the flaming darts of the evil one; 17 and take the helmet of salvation, and the sword of the Spirit, which is the word of God, 18 praying at all times in the Spirit, with all prayer and supplication.

Truth should, and does, drive error out of all mortal selfhood. Truth is a two-edged sword, guarding and guiding. Truth places the Cherubim wisdom at the gate of understanding to acknowledge the proper guests. Radiant with mercy and justice, the sword of Truth shines far. It also cannot help but indicate the infinite distance between error and Truth, between the material and spiritual—the unreal and the real.

Do not judge the future advancement of divine Science by the steps already taken, unless you yourself will be condemned for failing to take the first step.

Let us prepare for the supremacy of Spirit, the kingdom of heaven—the government and law of universal harmony, which cannot be lost or remain forever unseen.

Romans 8:35

Who shall separate us from the love of Christ? Shall tribulation, or distress, or persecution, or famine, or nakedness, or danger, or sword?

From 21st Century Science and Health

Physical sciences analyze the testimony of the physical senses, constantly splitting it apart, breaking it down to nothing.  This creates an aversion between physical sciences and divine Science, but as the errors of sense are eliminated, divine Science shows the possibility of attaining spiritual understanding.

The mistake of trying to split Spirit causes human belief to have “many ‘gods’ and many ‘lords’.”[5]

We are the image or idea of God, an idea which can’t be lost or separated from its divine Principle. As the evidence before the mortal perceptions evaporate in the presence of spiritual perception, nothing can estrange us from the sweet sense and presence of Life and Truth.

It is an unawareness of spirituality which hides real beauty. Limited mindsets are unable to reveal immortal goodness. Understanding this, Paul said: “Neither death nor life, neither angels nor demons, neither the present nor the future, nor any powers, neither height nor depth, nor anything else in all cre ation, will be able to separate us from the love of God.”[6] This is the doctrine of Christian Science: that divine Love cannot be deprived of its manifestation or object; that happiness cannot be turned into sorrow, for sorrow is not the master of happiness; that good can never produce evil; that matter can never produce mind; and life cannot result in death. God’s unspoiled child—governed by its perfect Principle—is sinless and eternal.
