Golden text: Colossians 3:12-13*

Put on therefore, as God’s elect, holy and beloved, a heart of compassion, kindness, lowliness, meekness, longsuffering; 13 forbearing one another, and forgiving each other, if any man have a complaint against any; even as the Lord forgave you, so also do ye:

II Kings 13:14-19

Now Elisha was fallen sick of his sickness whereof he died: and Joash the king of Israel came down unto him, and wept over him, and said, My father, my father, the chariots of Israel and the horsemen thereof! 15 And Elisha said unto him, Take bow and arrows; and he took unto him bow and arrows. 16 And he said to the king of Israel, Put thy hand upon the bow; and he put his hand upon it. And Elisha laid his hands upon the king’s hands. 17 And he said, Open the window eastward; and he opened it. Then Elisha said, Shoot; and he shot. And he said, Jehovah’s arrow of victory, even the arrow of victory over Syria; for thou shalt smite the Syrians in Aphek, till thou have consumed them. 18 And he said, Take the arrows; and he took them. And he said unto the king of Israel, Smite upon the ground; and he smote thrice, and stayed. 19 And the man of God was wroth with him, and said, Thou shouldest have smitten five or six times: then hadst thou smitten Syria till thou hadst consumed it; whereas now thou shalt smite Syria but thrice.

A rule in Science is to fight against error and negate the human finite self with infinite Truth. This rule clearly interprets God as divine Principle—as Life, epitomized by the Father; as Truth, represented by the Child; as Love, represented by the Mother. Every human being at some point, here or hereafter, must battle with and overcome the mortal belief in a power opposed to God.

What happens when we don’t fight and destroy sin? What happens when we don’t destroy finite convictions or mortal status quos? Our mental and physical state will perceive suffering. The sin, which you think you love or is a part of you, comes back with accelerated force, for the devil knows its time is short. The Scriptural reference to time reaffirms the fact that evil is temporal, not eternal. The dragon is at last stung to death by its own malice. Paul refers to its sting as, “spiritual forces of evil in the heavenly realms.”[1]  How many periods of torture are required to remove all sin will depend on sin’s stubbornness.

II Kings 13: 20-25

And Elisha died, and they buried him. Now the bands of the Moabites invaded the land at the coming in of the year. 21 And it came to pass, as they were burying a man, that, behold, they spied a band; and they cast the man into the sepulchre of Elisha: and as soon as the man touched the bones of Elisha, he revived, and stood up on his feet.

22 And Hazael king of Syria oppressed Israel all the days of Jehoahaz. 23 But Jehovah was gracious unto them, and had compassion on them, and had respect unto them, because of his covenant with Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob, and would not destroy them, neither cast he them from his presence as yet. 24 And Hazael king of Syria died; and Ben-hadad his son reigned in his stead. 25 And Jehoash the son of Jehoahaz took again out of the hand of Ben-hadad the son of Hazael the cities which he had taken out of the hand of Jehoahaz his father by war. Three times did Joash smite him, and recovered the cities of Israel.

Those who are healed through metaphysical Science may not understand the Principle of the cure. They may even impute their recovery to change of air or diet, not rendering to God the honor due to Spirit alone. Entire immunity from the belief in sin, suffering, and death may not be reached at this level, but we may expect a decrease in these evils; and this scientific beginning is in the right direction.

To say that there is no sickness does not heal the sick. You have to know there is no sickness. Ignorance, subtlety, or false charity does not forever conceal error; evil will in time uncover and punish itself.

Anatomy says thoughts can move the muscles—sometimes. Such errors plague every material theory in which one statement contradicts another over and over again. It is related that Sir Humphry Davy[2] once apparently cured a case of paralysis simply by introducing a thermometer into the patient’s mouth. The thermometer was intended to ascertain the patient’s body temperature; but the sick man, supposed this ceremony was intended to heal him, and he recovered accordingly. Such a fact illustrates that all bodily activity comes from thought.

Lamentations 3:19-32

Remember mine affliction and my misery, the wormwood and the gall. 20 My soul hath them still in remembrance, and is bowed down within me. 21 This I recall to my mind; therefore have I hope. 22 It is of Jehovah’s lovingkindnesses that we are not consumed, because his compassions fail not. 23 They are new every morning; great is thy faithfulness. 24 Jehovah is my portion, saith my soul; therefore will I hope in him.
25 Jehovah is good unto them that wait for him, to the soul that seeketh him.
26 It is good that a man should hope and quietly wait for the salvation of Jehovah.
27 It is good for a man that he bear the yoke in his youth. 28  Let him sit alone and keep silence, because he hath laid it upon him. 29 Let him put his mouth in the dust, if so be there may be hope. 30 Let him give his cheek to him that smiteth him; let him be filled full with reproach. 31 For the Lord will not cast off for ever.
32 For though he cause grief, yet will he have compassion according to the multitude of his lovingkindnesses.

The careless doctor, the nurse, and the curt visitor may be sympathetic, but do they know the thorns they plant in the pillow of the sick and the heavenly homesick looking away from earth? Oh, why don’t they know? Being aware of this unawareness would do much more toward healing the sick and preparing their helpers for the midnight call, than all cries of “Lord, Lord!”

Common sense and common humanity are to be highly regarded; otherwise, what mental quality remains, with which to call forth healing from the extended arm of righteousness?

If the Scientist reaches the patient through divine Love, the healing work will be achieved at one visit. In the presence of Love, disease vanishes into its native nothingness like dew before the morning sunshine.

Spirituality must be pure in order to practice scientifically and deal with patients compassionately. Results correspond to the spiritual intent.

The physician who lacks empathy for humanity is deficient in goodwill. The public then has the apostolic warrant for repeating: “Those who say, ‘I love God,’ and hate their brothers or sisters, are liars; for those who do not love a brother or sister whom they have seen, cannot love God whom they have not seen.”[3] Not having spiritual goodwill, the physician lacks faith in the divine Mind, and can’t recognize infinite Love which alone confers the healing power. Such a so-called Scientist will “strain out a gnat”[4]  while they swallow the camels of bigoted pompous learning.

The physician must also pay attention so as not to be overwhelmed by either the hatefulness of sin or by the unveiling of wrong thinking (sin) in her or his own attitude. The sick are terrified by their sick beliefs and sinners should be frightened by their own sinful thinking; however, the Scientist of universal Truth and Love will be calm in the presence of both sin and disease, knowing that Life is God, and God is All.

It takes effort not to bury the spirit of divine Science in the burial clothes of its letter. If we would open the prison doors for the sick, we must first learn to bind up the broken-hearted. If we would heal by the Spirit, we must not hide the talent of spiritual healing behind the glitz of worldly status, ritualistic activities or even somber piety. In the presence of a sick person, employ tender words and spiritual encouragement.

Science speaks the words of Truth to those who are lost, and they answer with rejoicing.

Mark 1:40-45

And there cometh to [Jesus] a leper, beseeching him, and kneeling down to him, and saying unto him, If thou wilt, thou canst make me clean. 41 And being moved with compassion, he stretched forth his hand, and touched him, and saith unto him, I will; be thou made clean. 42 And straightway the leprosy departed from him, and he was made clean. 43 And he strictly charged him, and straightway sent him out, 44 and saith unto him, See thou say nothing to any man: but go show thyself to the priest, and offer for thy cleansing the things which Moses commanded, for a testimony unto them. 45 But he went out, and began to publish it much, and to spread abroad the matter, insomuch that Jesus could no more openly enter into a city, but was without in desert places: and they came to him from every quarter.

From 21st Century Science and Health

The theology of divine Science includes healing the sick. The ancient Christians were healers. Jesus taught, lived, and proved a scientific healing faith. Why has this living faith been lost? Compassionate, unobtrusive, intelligent healing is lost because our systems of religion are governed more or less by our systems of material medicine. The first idolatry was faith in matter. Society, advertisements, pharmaceutical companies, and the schools have made faith in drugs the fashion, rather than faith in God. By trusting matter to destroy its own disorder, health and harmony have been sacrificed. Temporal systems are barren of the vitality of spiritual power by which physical sense is made the servant of Science, and religion becomes Christ-like.

Love honors the demonstrations of Jesus with unsurpassed power and compassion. But the same, “attitude…as that of Christ Jesus”[5] must always accompany the letter of Science in order to confirm and repeat the ancient demonstrations of prophets and apostles.

This Science teaches us that God is the only Life, and that this Life is truth and love; that God is to be understood, compassionately respected, and demonstrated; that divine Truth drives out errors and heals the sick.
