Golden text: I Corinthians 1: 25

For the foolishness of God is wiser than men, and the weakness of God is stronger than men.

Proverbs 8: 1-7

Does not wisdom call?
Does not understanding raise her voice?
On the heights beside the way,
at the crossroads she takes her stand;
beside the gates in front of the town,
at the entrance of the portals she cries aloud:
“To you, O men, I call,
and my cry is to the children of man.
O simple ones, learn prudence;
O fools, learn sense.
Hear, for I will speak noble things,
and from my lips will come what is right,
for my mouth will utter truth;

Matthew 5:1, 21-22

Seeing the crowds, [Jesus] went up on the mountain, and when he sat down, his disciples came to him.

21“You have heard that it was said to those of old, ‘You shall not murder; and whoever murders will be liable to judgment.’ 22 But I say to you that everyone who is angry with his brother will be liable to judgment; whoever insults his brother will be liable to the council; and whoever says, ‘You fool!’ will be liable to the hell of fire.

The Infinite can do nothing less than give all goodness since God is absolute good, wisdom, and Love—the all-knowing

The mild forms of suggestion are disappearing and its aggressive features are coming to the front. The mechanism of crime, hidden in the dark recesses of mortal thought, is every hour producing more complicated and subtle confusion. So inconceivable are the present methods of the human mind’s influences that they trick people into indolence and produce the very apathy on the subjects which the criminal desires. The power of suggestion, with its many different disguises such as herd mentality and the adoption of unoriginal thinking, causes people to make errors throughout the thought process.

It is foolish to think our own sins will be less sinful if we attack someone else who we believe is sinful. Did the excommunication of Martin Luther[1] make the ritualistic hypocrisy of his enemies less criminal?

Matthew 23: 16-22

 “Woe to you, blind guides, who say, ‘If anyone swears by the temple, it is nothing, but if anyone swears by the gold of the temple, he is bound by his oath.’ 17 You blind fools! For which is greater, the gold or the temple that has made the gold sacred? 18 And you say, ‘If anyone swears by the altar, it is nothing, but if anyone swears by the gift that is on the altar, he is bound by his oath.’ 19 You blind men! For which is greater, the gift or the altar that makes the gift sacred? 20 So whoever swears by the altar swears by it and by everything on it. 21 And whoever swears by the temple swears by it and by him who dwells in it. 22 And whoever swears by heaven swears by the throne of God and by him who sits upon it.

Grafting spirituality onto something not spiritual is as foolish as trying to “strain out a gnat” and “swallow a camel!”[2] Sin needs to be abandoned before forgiven.

To talk the right and live the wrong is foolish deceit, doing one’s self the most harm. Captivated by sin yourself, it is difficult to rescue someone else from the prison of disease.

Erring mind-forces are trickery and do their work under the name of good. Spirit and matter, good and evil, light and darkness, cannot mingle.

When darkness comes over the earth, the physical senses have no direct evidence of a sun. The human eye doesn’t know where the light of day is, or if it exists. Astronomy gives the desired information. The physical senses accept the authority of astronomy. If our eyes see no sun for a week, we still believe that there is solar light and heat. Natural science advances human thought past the crude theories of the human mind and dissolves fear.

Human beings do not deny the existence of good weather when a hurricane is raging. They know good weather exists and will return. In like manner, it is profitable for human beings to accept the authority of divine Science and its power to explain the effect of human mind on the body and establish harmony, though the cause is unseen. The sins of others should not make good people suffer.

Matthew 25: 1-13

“Then the kingdom of heaven will be like ten virgins who took their lamps and went to meet the bridegroom. Five of them were foolish, and five were wise. For when the foolish took their lamps, they took no oil with them, but the wise took flasks of oil with their lamps. As the bridegroom was delayed, they all became drowsy and slept. But at midnight there was a cry, ‘Here is the bridegroom! Come out to meet him.’ Then all those virgins rose and trimmed their lamps. And the foolish said to the wise, ‘Give us some of your oil, for our lamps are going out.’ But the wise answered, saying, ‘Since there will not be enough for us and for you, go rather to the dealers and buy for yourselves.’ 10 And while they were going to buy, the bridegroom came, and those who were ready went in with him to the marriage feast, and the door was shut. 11 Afterward the other virgins came also, saying, ‘Lord, lord, open to us.’ 12 But he answered, ‘Truly, I say to you, I do not know you.’ 13 Watch therefore, for you know neither the day nor the hour.

Fear of punishment never made a person truly honest. Moral courage is requisite to meet the wrong behavior and proclaim the right. But how is the person, who has more animal courage than moral courage, reformed? How do we help a person who doesn’t have the true idea of good? Through human consciousness, convince the person it is a mistake to look for power and happiness through material means. Reason is the most active human capability. Let rational thought guide the person’s feelings and awaken their dormant sense of moral obligation. By degrees, they will learn the nothingness of the pleasures of human sense and the greatness and happiness of spiritual sense. This silences the corporeal and the person will not only be saved, but is saved.

It is moral foolishness which rushes around chaotically, making annoying demands or loud complaints. We can become secure in civility and goodness.

To the physical senses, the strict demands of divine Science seem final. However, humanity is quickly learning that Life is God, faithful good. We also learn that the demand of mortal knowledge is harsh and has in reality no place or power in the human or the divine economy.

Ephesians 5:1-4

Therefore be imitators of God, as beloved children. And walk in love, as Christ loved us and gave himself up for us, a fragrant offering and sacrifice to God.

But sexual immorality and all impurity or covetousness must not even be named among you, as is proper among saints. Let there be no filthiness nor foolish talk nor crude joking, which are out of place, but instead let there be thanksgiving.

The anatomy of Christian Science teaches when and how to examine the self-inflicted wounds of ill-will, hostility, envy, and excuse making. It teaches the control of foolish ambition. It unfolds the sacred influences of honesty, philanthropy, spiritual love. It urges the government of the body both in health and in sickness.

When examined in the light of divine Science, we see beyond the surface of mortals and detect inverted thoughts and erroneous beliefs and learn not to be fooled by them. Or, in a circuitous manner, we borrow thought from a higher source than matter and reverse our thought process, to see celestial Truth replace error. Clothed in Spirit, appearance is “bright as a flash of lightning”[3]―like the garment of Christ. Even in this world, therefore, “always be clothed in white.”[4] “Anyone who meets a testing challenge head-on and manages to stick it out is mighty fortunate. For such persons loyally in love with God, the reward is life and more life.”[5]

I Corinthians 4:5-10

Therefore do not pronounce judgment before the time, before the Lord comes, who will bring to light the things now hidden in darkness and will disclose the purposes of the heart. Then each one will receive his commendation from God.

I have applied all these things to myself and Apollos for your benefit, brothers, that you may learn by us not to go beyond what is written, that none of you may be puffed up in favor of one against another. For who sees anything different in you? What do you have that you did not receive? If then you received it, why do you boast as if you did not receive it?

Already you have all you want! Already you have become rich! Without us you have become kings! And would that you did reign, so that we might share the rule with you! For I think that God has exhibited us apostles as last of all, like men sentenced to death, because we have become a spectacle to the world, to angels, and to men. 10 We are fools for Christ’s sake, but you are wise in Christ.

From 21st Century Science and Health

We cannot be mesmerized by the flesh or hypnotized by human mind while practicing the Science of Truth. Truth cannot be reversed, but the reverse of error is true. An improved conviction cannot retrograde. When Christ, Truth, changes a human mortal conviction of sin or sickness into a better conviction, then thought melts into spiritual understanding, and sin, disease, and death disappear. Truth, Love, gives human beings temporary food and clothing until the temporal, transformed with the ideal, disappears, and we are clothed and fed spiritually. St. Paul says, “Work out (cultivate, carry out to the goal, and fully complete) your salvation with reverence and awe and trembling (self-distrust, with serious caution, tenderness of conscience, watchfulness against temptation, timidly shrinking from whatever might offend God and discredit the name of Christ).”[6] Jesus said, “Do not be afraid, little flock, for your Father has been pleased to give you the kingdom.”[7] This truth is divine Science.

Christian Scientists, be a law to yourselves that mental malpractice cannot harm you either when asleep or when awake.
