Golden text: Luke 15:1-2*

Now the tax collectors and sinners were all gathering around to hear Jesus. But the Pharisees and the teachers of the law muttered, “This man welcomes sinners and eats with them.”

Jesus urged the commandment, “You shall have no other gods before me,”[1] which may be interpreted as, you will have no belief of Life as finite. You shall not know an evil life, for there is one Life which is God, good.

To the ritualistic church authorities and hypocritical Pharisees, Jesus said, “The tax collectors and the prostitutes are entering the kingdom of God ahead of you.”[2]

Knowing the limitations of human thinking, Jesus tolerated humanity’s weaknesses, and “by his wounds [the rejection of error] we are healed.”[3]

Genesis 1: 4-7

Adam made love to his wife Eve, and she became pregnant and gave birth to Cain. She said, “With the help of the Lord I have brought forth a man.” Later she gave birth to his brother Abel.

Now Abel kept flocks, and Cain worked the soil. In the course of time Cain brought some of the fruits of the soil as an offering to the Lord. And Abel also brought an offering—fat portions from some of the firstborn of his flock. The Lord looked with favor on Abel and his offering, but on Cain and his offering he did not look with favor. So Cain was very angry, and his face was downcast.

Then the Lord said to Cain, “Why are you angry? Why is your face downcast? If you do what is right, will you not be accepted? But if you do not do what is right, sin is crouching at your door; it desires to have you, but you must rule over it.”

Question. What about sin?

Answer. All reality is in God and God’s revelation, harmonious and eternal. That which Truth creates is good, and Truth makes all that is made. Therefore, the only reality of sin, sickness, or death is the awful fact that unrealities seem real to human, erring belief, until God strips off their disguise. Sin, sickness, and death are not true, because they are not of God. We learn in Christian Science that all inharmony of human mind (or body) is a false impression, possessing no reality or identity, although it seems to be real and identifiable.

Genesis 1: 8-16

Now Cain said to his brother Abel, “Let’s go out to the field.” While they were in the field, Cain attacked his brother Abel and killed him.

Then the Lord said to Cain, “Where is your brother Abel?”

“I don’t know,” he replied. “Am I my brother’s keeper?”

10 The Lord said, “What have you done? Listen! Your brother’s blood cries out to me from the ground. 11 Now you are under a curse and driven from the ground, which opened its mouth to receive your brother’s blood from your hand. 12 When you work the ground, it will no longer yield its crops for you. You will be a restless wanderer on the earth.”

13 Cain said to the Lord, “My punishment is more than I can bear. 14 Today you are driving me from the land, and I will be hidden from your presence; I will be a restless wanderer on the earth, and whoever finds me will kill me.”

15 But the Lord said to him, “Not so; anyone who kills Cain will suffer vengeance seven times over.” Then the Lord put a mark on Cain so that no one who found him would kill him. 16 So Cain went out from the Lord’s presence and lived in the land of Nod, east of Eden.

To love our neighbor’s spiritual nature as we love our own spirituality, is a divine idea; but this idea can never be seen, felt, or understood through the physical senses. Excite the organ of admiration or religious faith and a person manifests profound adoration. Excite the feelings of anger or pessimism and the person curses God. These effects, however, do not proceed from spirituality. Idolization and irreverence are both a spin-off of mortal belief.

In his book, The Four Agreements: Wisdom Book, Don Miguel Ruiz[4]  presents a reasonable view of sinlessness based on the word “Impeccability.” Differing views of falsity help us grasp the fact that to infinite Spirit there is no sin, because all is sinless Spirit, all is divine Principle and its idea. The sacred influence of Truth is to abolish error and sin, so, can error be immortal? Truth spares all that is true. If evil is real, Truth must make it so, but error, not Truth, is the author of the unreal. The unreal vanishes, while all that is real is eternal. The apostle says that the mission of the divine idea, called Christ, is to “destroy the works of the devil.”[5] Truth wipes out falsity and error, for light and darkness can’t dwell together. Light extinguishes the darkness— there is “no night there.”[6] To Truth there is no error, all is Truth.

The spiritual ability to comprehend thought and to heal by the Truth-power is won only as we are found reflecting the divine nature. Put in other words, self-glorification, arrogance, anger, and the like, are not found in Truth healing.

Luke 1: 57-60, 67-80

When it was time for Elizabeth to have her baby, she gave birth to a son. 58 Her neighbors and relatives heard that the Lord had shown her great mercy, and they shared her joy.

59 On the eighth day they came to circumcise the child, and they were going to name him after his father Zechariah, 60 but his mother spoke up and said, “No! He is to be called John.”

67 His father Zechariah was filled with the Holy Spirit and prophesied:

68 “Praise be to the Lord, the God of Israel,
because he has come to his people and redeemed them.
69 He has raised up a horn of salvation for us
in the house of his servant David
70 (as he said through his holy prophets of long ago),
71 salvation from our enemies
and from the hand of all who hate us—
72 to show mercy to our ancestors
and to remember his holy covenant,
73     the oath he swore to our father Abraham:
74 to rescue us from the hand of our enemies,
and to enable us to serve him without fear
75     in holiness and righteousness before him all our days.

76 And you, my child, will be called a prophet of the Most High;
for you will go on before the Lord to prepare the way for him,
77 to give his people the knowledge of salvation
through the forgiveness of their sins,
78 because of the tender mercy of our God,
by which the rising sun will come to us from heaven
79 to shine on those living in darkness
and in the shadow of death,
to guide our feet into the path of peace.”

80 And the child grew and became strong in spirit; and he lived in the wilderness until he appeared publicly to Israel.

It is highly important—in view of the immense work to be accomplished before this recognition of divine Science can come—to turn our thoughts toward divine Principle, so that limited belief may be prepared to relinquish its error.

To think that God forgives or punishes sin, according to whether or not we pray, is to misunderstand Love. Prayer is not a loophole for wrongdoing.

James 5: 13-16

Is anyone among you in trouble? Let them pray. Is anyone happy? Let them sing songs of praise. 14 Is anyone among you sick? Let them call the elders of the church to pray over them and anoint them with oil in the name of the Lord. 15 And the prayer offered in faith will make the sick person well; the Lord will raise them up. If they have sinned, they will be forgiven. 16 Therefore confess your sins to each other and pray for each other so that you may be healed. The prayer of a righteous person is powerful and effective.

Psalms 32:5

Then I acknowledged my sin to you
and did not cover up my iniquity.
I said, “I will confess
my transgressions to the Lord.”
And you forgave
the guilt of my sin.

Proof of spirituality distinguishes between the Truth that is sinless and the falsity of sinful sense.

We must destroy the false knowledge that life and intelligence are in matter. We must desire to establish ourselves in what is pure and perfect.

We ask ourselves, what is substance to us—the flawed, the dying, the mutating and mortal? Or, is it that which is consistent, stable, and spiritual?

Human beings can never advance from the temporal debris of error—belief in sin, sickness, and death—until we learn that God is the only Life. We progress out of the thinking that life and sensation are in the body by understanding what constitutes ourselves as the image of God, and then Spirit will have overcome the flesh.
