People are proclaiming their independence from conventional academia and religion. A cell biologist by training, Bruce Lipton, Ph.D., explained in his book, The Biology of Belief, “I had come to question not only Darwin’s dog-eat-dog version of evolution, but also biology’s Central Dogma, the premise that genes control life.” Page 26
Lipton challenged biology’s Central Dogma, however his views made him look like a scientific heretic. Undaunted, he discovered evidence to back up his new biology. He even realized that holding to the old dogma was the same as religious fundamentalists who wouldn’t let go of superstitious dogmas.
Lipton’s spiritual courage prevailed and he declared independence from insufficient dogmas. He used cell communities as role models for his understanding.
Other people use Christ Jesus, prophets, and spiritual leaders as role models for understanding and vision.
Lipton wrote, “I came to the conclusion that we are not victims of our genes, but masters of our fates, able to create lives overflowing with peace, happiness and love. I tested my hypothesis in my own life…[and one] Sunday morning in the Big Easy, a coffee shop waitress asked me: “Honey, you are the happiest person I ever did see. Tell me child, why are you so happy?” I was taken aback by her question, but nevertheless I blurted out: “I’m in Heaven!” Page 27

Lipton explains, “Evolution has provided us with lots of survival mechanisms. They can be roughly divided into two functional categories: growth and protection. These growth and protection mechanisms are the fundamental behaviors required for an organism to survive.” Page 145
However, Lipton points out that while in a state of protection, we are not growing. Page 154 To be in a state of fear over terrorism is to be trapped in protective mode. Lipton wrote, “I’d also like to suggest that you examine how your fears and the ensuing protection behaviors impact your life. What fears are stunting your growth? Where did these fears come from? Are they necessary? Are they real?”

Taking a stand for independence from genetics, Lipton reminds his readers, “Let go of unfounded fears and take care not to implant unnecessary fears and limiting beliefs in your children’s subconscious minds. Most of all, do not accept the fatalistic message of genetic determinism…Take heed of the growth and protection lessons from cells and shift your lives into growth whenever possible. And remember that for human beings the most potent growth-promoter is not the fanciest school, the biggest toy or the highest-paying job. Long before cell biology and studies of children in orphanages, conscious parents and seers like Rumi knew that for human babies and adults the best growth promoter is Love.
‘A lifetime without Love is of no account
Love is the Water of Life
Drink it down with heart and soul.’”
From 21st Century Science and Health
The time for thinkers has come. Truth, independent of doctrines and time-honored systems, knocks at the portal of humanity. Contentment with the past and the cold conventionality of materialism are crumbling away. Ignorance of God is no longer the steppingstone to faith. The only guarantee of obedience is a right apprehension of Him whom to know aright is Life eternal. Though empires fall, “the Lord shall reign forever.”
A book introduces new thoughts, but it cannot make them speedily understood. It is the task of the sturdy pioneer to hew the tall oak and to cut the rough granite. Future ages must declare what the pioneer has accomplished.
Conventional medicine advocates drugs, even harmful drugs, and is far from divine Science. Learning the dangers or the uselessness of intrusive medicine, humanity looks in new directions for healing. Humanity begins to understand the power of mind over matter and the importance of better thinking. Be aware: some thought influences can pretend to be good or in our best interest, but are just as dangerous as harmful drugs. This is mental malpractice and is criminal, working against common humanity, honesty, and justice. Divine Mind-practice requires human mind to yield to the divine consciousness and to unite with the spiritual thought moving heavenward.
Like our nation, Christian Science has its Declaration of Independence. God has endowed us with inalienable rights, among which are self-government, reason, and conscience. We are properly self-governed only when we are guided rightly and governed by our Maker, divine Truth and Love.
If a random thought, calling itself indigestion, tries to tyrannize productive people, it is routed out by their independence and energy; because they who don’t have time for selfishness, coddling, and sicko chit-chat. It has not been proven beneficial for humanity to dwell on advice concerning the exact amount of food the stomach can digest. The latest food fad is not a health law.
Damp atmospheres and freezing snow can give rosy complexions. For pulmonary health, you don’t have to indulge in the refinement of inflamed bronchial tubes. You don’t have to fear pneumonia, or depend on antibiotics, vapor therapy, or antihistamines. You can rely on something better than the fruit of the “knowledge of good and evil.”
The action of human mind on the body was not so injurious before curiosity took up medical study and then distracted thought away from spiritual healing. “Where ignorance is bliss, ‘tis folly to be wise,” and there is truth in this sentiment.
Permit the stomach and bowels to act in obedience to nature. Give the gospel a chance to be seen in its glorious effects upon the body. Dismiss the ghastly collection of diseases paraded before your imagination. Keep to “sermons in stones, and good in everything.” When the mechanism of the human mind gives place to the divine Mind, selfishness and sin, disease and death, will lose their grip.
Human fear of pollution would load the air of Eden with disease. Fear weighs down humanity with superimposed and conjectural evils. Human mind is the worst enemy of the body, while divine Mind is its best friend.
Does a dead body become cancerous? Unconscious human mind—alias matter, brain—cannot dictate terms to consciousness or say, “I am sick.” The mistaken thinking, that the unconscious substratum of human mind, termed the body, suffers and reports disease independently of this so-called conscious mind, is an error. This mistake prevents human beings from knowing how to control their bodies.
The so-called conscious human mind is believed to be superior to its unconscious substratum, matter, and the stronger never yields to the weaker, except through fear or choice. The animate should be governed by God alone. The real person is spiritual and immortal, but the human and imperfect so-called children of human beings are counterfeits from the beginning, to be laid aside for the pure reality. Mortality is put off and spirituality is put on in proportion as human beings realize the Science of true identity and seek the true model.
Let us rid our self of the belief that we are separate from God, and obey only the divine Principle, Life and Love. Here is the launching pad to all true spiritual growth.
Divine Science explains all cause and effect as mental, not physical. It lifts the veil of mystery from Soul and body. Science shows the scientific relation of person to God and unravels the interwoven ambiguities of being, setting free the imprisoned thought. In divine Science, the universe, including man and woman, is spiritual, harmonious, and eternal.
