Subject: Body and Soul

Through science, the human body has been described in detail, but it doesn’t include a description of soul. The description of soul is generally taken up by religious and philosophical thinkers. However, not all scientists are averse to taking on the challenge of soul. Quantum scientists, Dr. Stuart Hameroff and Sir Roger Penrose have developed a theory claiming that soul is contained inside structures called microtubules which live within brain cells.

I can’t speak for Hameroff and Penrose, but this theory isn’t very helpful to me. If it were true, that soul is locked inside material elements, it stands to reason that soul is limited. In other words, limited in it’s help. There must be more.

From my religious upbringing, I’ve been encouraged to ponder, not soul in the body, but Soul as infinite, and us as image of that one Soul, although we reflect Soul in our own individual way. It’s similar to, mind is not in our body, but our mind embodies our body.

For millenniums, people have spoken about soul. Using the Bible of your choice, read Genesis 27:1-4.

We read about Isaac the patriarch requesting his son, Esau, to prepare food, “that my soul may bless you before I die.”

While Esau was out getting food, a conspiracy was hatched. The mother, Rebekah told Esau’s brother, Jacob, to steal the blessing.

Genesis 27:5-19

Jacob lied to Isaac, telling him he was Esau and asking that his soul bless him.

This Biblical description of soul points to the notion that soul can be conspiratorial or confused.

Genesis 27:20-40

As the story unfolds however, soul is redeemed. Esau was blessed by Isaac, with the assurance that the yoke, or burden, of an evil soul will be broken. Esau would experience a soul untouched by evil.

The concept of soul was improving. The concept of Soul is still expanding in consciousness.

Turning to Matthew 11:29, we find timeless reassurance. We can take on the yoke of Christ and experience rest for our soul.

What is the yoke of Christ?

A yoke is a harness or collar. In the olden days could have been a wooden crosspiece that was fastened over the necks of two animals and attached to a plow or cart that they were to pull.

As we stay fastened to Christ, Truth, the burden of life becomes easier to take. It’s a step to realizing Soul, power, strength is not inside our bodies, but of the infinite.

Psalm 19:7

From 21st Century Science and Health*

When we watch the sunrise, human beings rarely deny heliocentrism. We knowledgably admit the fact that the earth is spinning and circling the sun. So also, the Science of Mind reverses the delusive evidence that soul is in a body.

Human-made theories make the same mistake regarding soul and body that René Descartes[1] made regarding the brain as a complex fixed machine. Adherents of Descartes theories culminates in localizationism, the belief in a hard-wired brain in which each mental function has a strict location. However modern brain science is showing, “[Brain] plasticity is a normal phenomenon, and brain maps are constantly changing.”[2] Moreover, Christian Science is showing that mind is not subject to the brain or matter, and soul is not in the body. The order of Science can’t be reversed by human theories that assign to matter the power and prerogative of Spirit, a paradigm in which people become the most absolutely weak and pitiful creatures in the universe. Scientific blunders can’t affect the harmony of being.

We can admit the facts that Soul is not in a body and that the body is accountable to Mind. People are the humble expressions of calm Mind, though it seems otherwise to our immature perceptions. We will never understand spiritual facts if we don’t metaphysically reverse the outward appearance. Man and woman are not a dichotomy of non-intelligence and intelligence. We coexist with and reflect God, Soul, substance, unchangeable and intelligent.

Science reverses the false testimony of the physical senses. Mortals arrive at the fundamental facts of being by this reversal. The question inevitably arises: Is a person sick if the physical senses indicate that they are in good health? No! Matter can make no conditions for man and woman. And is a person well if the senses say they are sick? Yes, they are well in Science in which health is normal and disease is abnormal.

Health is not a condition of matter, but of Mind.

Thinking from the position of a beginning and an end will never do justice to Truth in any direction. Finite beliefs would compress Mind, which is infinite, into a skull bone. Such belief can’t understand or worship the infinite. Moreover, in an effort to accommodate beginnings and endings, it breaks up Soul and substance. It tries to divide the one Spirit into persons and souls.

Nobody can affirm that God is a bodily being. The Bible represents Spirit as saying: “you cannot see my face, for no one may see me and live.”[3] Not materially, but spiritually we know God as divine Mind, as Life, Truth, and Love.

To assess soul and mind as though they exist in matter, or in the human mindset, causes the thinker to stray into a feeling of loss. A false assessment believes Soul and spiritual truth could be absent. This state is the mortal dream of life and substance as existent in matter and is directly opposite to the immortal reality of being. So long as we believe that Soul can transgress or that spiritual Soul is in the human body, we can never understand the Science of being. When humanity does understand this Science, it will become our law of Life—even the supreme law of Soul, which prevails over temporal sense through harmony and spirituality.

We become more respectful and caring as we get to know the divine nature better and love Soul understandingly.

The devotion to Spirit is the soul of spirituality.
