Proverbs 16: 11*
A just balance and scales are the Lord’s; all the weights in the bag are his work.
Psalm 55: 1-13
Give ear to my prayer, O God,
and hide not yourself from my plea for mercy!
2 Attend to me, and answer me;
I am restless in my complaint and I moan,
3 because of the noise of the enemy,
because of the oppression of the wicked.
For they drop trouble upon me,
and in anger they bear a grudge against me.
4 My heart is in anguish within me;
the terrors of death have fallen upon me.
5 Fear and trembling come upon me,
and horror overwhelms me.
6 And I say, “Oh, that I had wings like a dove!
I would fly away and be at rest;
7 yes, I would wander far away;
I would lodge in the wilderness; Selah
8 I would hurry to find a shelter
from the raging wind and tempest.”
9 Destroy, O Lord, divide their tongues;
for I see violence and strife in the city.
10 Day and night they go around it
on its walls,
and iniquity and trouble are within it;
11 ruin is in its midst;
oppression and fraud
do not depart from its marketplace.
12 For it is not an enemy who taunts me—
then I could bear it;
it is not an adversary who deals insolently with me—
then I could hide from him.
13 But it is you, a man, my equal,
my companion, my familiar friend.

Whatever is regulated by a negative attitude is shiftless and mortal. We say people suffer from the effects of noise, heat, and fatigue; but this is a human creed, not the truth of being, for matter cannot suffer. Human mind alone suffers—not because a law of matter has been violated, but because a law of this mind has been disobeyed.
Mind’s constant movement, along with honest investigation, will bring the hour when people will stop in some way, the mysteriousness that increases with material knowledge. Apathy toward the tendency of certain active yet unseen mental agencies will finally be shocked into another extreme mortal mood—into human indignation, for one extreme follows another.
During a final conflict, nefarious minds will endeavor to find means by which to accomplish more evil. People who discern divine reality will hold crime in check; they will help in the ejection of error. They will maintain law and order, and cheerfully serve the certainty of ultimate perfection.
Jonah 1: 1-4, 11-15, 17
Now the word of the Lord came to Jonah the son of Amittai, saying, 2 “Arise, go to Nineveh, that great city, and call out against it, for their evil has come up before me.” 3 But Jonah rose to flee to Tarshish from the presence of the Lord. He went down to Joppa and found a ship going to Tarshish. So he paid the fare and went down into it, to go with them to Tarshish, away from the presence of the Lord.
4 But the Lord hurled a great wind upon the sea, and there was a mighty tempest on the sea, so that the ship threatened to break up.
11 Then they said to [Jonah], “What shall we do to you, that the sea may quiet down for us?” For the sea grew more and more tempestuous. 12 He said to them, “Pick me up and hurl me into the sea; then the sea will quiet down for you, for I know it is because of me that this great tempest has come upon you.” 13 Nevertheless, the men rowed hard to get back to dry land, but they could not, for the sea grew more and more tempestuous against them. 14 Therefore they called out to the Lord, “O Lord, let us not perish for this man’s life, and lay not on us innocent blood, for you, O Lord, have done as it pleased you.” 15 So they picked up Jonah and hurled him into the sea, and the sea ceased from its raging.
17 And the Lord appointed a great fish to swallow up Jonah. And Jonah was in the belly of the fish three days and three nights.

Human beings do not deny the existence of good weather when a hurricane is raging. They know good weather exists and will return. In like manner, it is profitable for human beings to accept the authority of divine Science and its power to explain the effect of human mind on the body and establish harmony, though the cause is unseen. The sins of others should not make good people suffer.
Humanity believes that nuclear fission is fierce and the electric current swift, yet in spiritual Science the discharge of one and the flash of the other will become harmless. The more destructive matter becomes, the more its nonbeing will appear, until matter reaches its mortal extreme in illusion and completely self-destructs. The more closely error simulates truth—and the more matter resembles its essence, human mind—the more impotent error becomes as a belief. When a false belief becomes a first-rate copy of truth, it is ready for defeat, even if it hasn’t yet passed the boundary of complete self-destruction. The more material the belief, the more obvious its error until divine Spirit, Love, supreme in its domain, dominates all matter and original person is found in the likeness of Spirit.
Universal facts naturally trigger anything that is false to work against its self, bringing error out from under cover. It requires courage to voice truth. The higher Truth’s voice is lifted, the louder error will scream until its inarticulate noise is forever silenced in oblivion.
The astronomer no longer looks up to the stars—but looks out from them upon the universe. The florist finds the flower before its seed. Every cell can be seen before its multiplication. The seasons will come and go with changes of time and tide, cold and heat, latitude and longitude. Farmers will find that these changes can’t affect the crops. “Like clothing You will change them and they will be changed.” The navigator can have dominion over the weather, over the great deep, over the fish of the sea and the fowls of the air. Time will not affect life.
Luke 18: 18-30
And a ruler asked [Jesus], “Good Teacher, what must I do to inherit eternal life?” 19 And Jesus said to him, “Why do you call me good? No one is good except God alone. 20 You know the commandments: ‘Do not commit adultery, Do not murder, Do not steal, Do not bear false witness, Honor your father and mother.’” 21 And he said, “All these I have kept from my youth.” 22 When Jesus heard this, he said to him, “One thing you still lack. Sell all that you have and distribute to the poor, and you will have treasure in heaven; and come, follow me.” 23 But when he heard these things, he became very sad, for he was extremely rich. 24 Jesus, seeing that he had become sad, said, “How difficult it is for those who have wealth to enter the kingdom of God! 25 For it is easier for a camel to go through the eye of a needle than for a rich person to enter the kingdom of God.” 26 Those who heard it said, “Then who can be saved?” 27 But he said, “What is impossible with man is possible with God.” 28 And Peter said, “See, we have left our homes and followed you.” 29 And he said to them, “Truly, I say to you, there is no one who has left house or wife or brothers or parents or children, for the sake of the kingdom of God, 30 who will not receive many times more in this time, and in the age to come eternal life.”

Millions of unprejudiced minds are waiting and looking for rest and drink. They are simple seekers for Truth, weary wanderers thirsty in the desert. Give them a cup of cold water with Christ’s attitude and never fear the consequences. Watch out, because the old dragon may cause a torrential uproar to drown the Christ-idea. However, the dragon can’t destroy “an instrument through which only truth can speak.” The truth of being will be understood. The earth will help. People who are ready for the blessing will give you thanks. The river will be calmed, and Christ will command the wave.
Our wisdom finds no satisfaction in misconduct, since God has sentenced negative behavior to suffer. The fascinations of yesterday, predicted today’s obsessions or mesmerized thinking. The drunk thinks it is enjoyable to be intoxicated. You cannot make the inebriate leave the drunkenness until their temporal sense of pleasure yields to a better sense. A drunk will turn from the bottle, as the startled dreamer wakens from a nightmare due to the stress of distorted sense. A person who likes to do wrong—finding pleasure in it and refraining from it only through fear of consequences—is not moderate or reliable.
Imbalance has no Principle; its action is erroneous and assumes people are in the fluctuating elements of the human mind. Imbalance would make human mind the cause as well as the effect of intelligence, thus attempting to separate Mind from God.
Consciousness, as well as action, is governed by Mind. Consciousness is in God, the source and governor of all that Science reveals. Balanced action proceeds from Spirit, God.
