Golden Text: Psalm 119:58

I entreat your favor with all my heart; be gracious to me according to your promise.

Genesis 24:1-9, English Standard Version

Now Abraham was old, well advanced in years. And the Lord had blessed Abraham in all things. And Abraham said to his servant, the oldest of his household, who had charge of all that he had, “Put your hand under my thigh, that I may make you swear by the Lord, the God of heaven and God of the earth, that you will not take a wife for my son from the daughters of the Canaanites, among whom I dwell, but will go to my country and to my kindred, and take a wife for my son Isaac.” The servant said to him, “Perhaps the woman may not be willing to follow me to this land. Must I then take your son back to the land from which you came?” Abraham said to him, “See to it that you do not take my son back there. The Lord, the God of heaven, who took me from my father’s house and from the land of my kindred, and who spoke to me and swore to me, ‘To your offspring I will give this land,’ he will send his angel before you, and you shall take a wife for my son from there. But if the woman is not willing to follow you, then you will be free from this oath of mine; only you must not take my son back there.” So the servant put his hand under the thigh of Abraham his master and swore to him concerning this matter.

Be aware of how your promises to another will influence your own growth and other people’s lives.

The “mighty angel,” or message, which comes from God, represents divine Science. To human perception, divine Science seems at first obscure, abstract, and dim, but a bright promise crowns its brow. Divine Science understood, is the prism and praise of Truth. An honest view of divine Science enables you to heal by its means. Science has for you a light greater than the sun, for God “is its lamp.”[1]

The appearance of good, as was promised by Jesus, establishes the divine system among humanity. Now, as in earlier times, signs and wonders are meant to elucidate the divine origin and substantiate the reality of Truth. The higher mission of Science is not physical healing, but is to take away the sins of the world.

Genesis 24:10, 15-18, 29, 31-32, 42-44, 57

 Then the servant took ten of his master’s camels and departed, taking all sorts of choice gifts from his master; and he arose and went to Mesopotamia to the city of Nahor.

Behold, Rebekah, who was born to Bethuel the son of Milcah, the wife of Nahor, Abraham’s brother, came out with her water jar on her shoulder. 16 The young woman was very attractive in appearance, a maiden whom no man had known. She went down to the spring and filled her jar and came up. 17 Then the servant ran to meet her and said, “Please give me a little water to drink from your jar.” 18 She said, “Drink, my lord.” And she quickly let down her jar upon her hand and gave him a drink.

 Rebekah had a brother whose name was Laban. Laban ran out toward the man, to the spring.

31 He said, “Come in, O blessed of the Lord. Why do you stand outside? For I have prepared the house and a place for the camels.” 32 So the man came to the house and unharnessed the camels, and gave straw and fodder to the camels, and there was water to wash his feet and the feet of the men who were with him.

42 “I came today to the spring and said, ‘O Lord, the God of my master Abraham, if now you are prospering the way that I go, 43 behold, I am standing by the spring of water. Let the virgin who comes out to draw water, to whom I shall say, “Please give me a little water from your jar to drink,” 44 and who will say to me, “Drink, and I will draw for your camels also,” let her be the woman whom the Lord has appointed for my master’s son.’

57 They said, “Let us call the young woman and ask her.” 58 And they called Rebekah and said to her, “Will you go with this man?” She said, “I will go.”

Promising relationships correlate with the motive to participate in activities adapted to improve society. Marriage is fortunate or unfortunate according to the expectations it involves and fulfills. Unity of spirit gives new energy to a sense of joy, whereas lame or unreasonable expectations drag joy through the mud.

Mutual compromises, or a prenuptial agreement, will often preserve an arrangement which might otherwise become unbearable. Agree on a realistic intent of the marriage and share the responsibilities to meet that intent. As you both fulfill the different demands of your united spheres, you will feel supported, confident, and thus sanctify the union of wellbeing in which the heart finds peace and home.

Gentle words, and an unselfish attention to detail in what promotes the success of your spouse, will prove valuable in prolonging one another’s health and smiles. Don’t practice stolid indifference or resentment. Remember, a simple heartfelt word or deed is powerful enough to renew the romance.

Until it is learned that God is Father-Mother, marriage will be useful as long as mortals do not permit an unlawfulness that leads to a worse state of society than now exists. Sincerity and virtue ensure the stability of the marriage promise. Marriage won’t lose its luster as the love/hate emotions give way to the rejoicing of Soul. Recognize your ability to unite masculine and feminine insight, love, spiritual understanding, and perpetual peace.

I Timothy 4:1-16

 If you put these things before the brothers, you will be a good servant of Christ Jesus, being trained in the words of the faith and of the good doctrine that you have followed. Have nothing to do with irreverent, silly myths. Rather train yourself for godliness; for while bodily training is of some value, godliness is of value in every way, as it holds promise for the present life and also for the life to come. The saying is trustworthy and deserving of full acceptance. 10 For to this end we toil and strive, because we have our hope set on the living God, who is the Savior of all people, especially of those who believe.

11 Command and teach these things. 12 Let no one despise you for your youth, but set the believers an example in speech, in conduct, in love, in faith, in purity. 13 Until I come, devote yourself to the public reading of Scripture, to exhortation, to teaching. 14 Do not neglect the gift you have, which was given you by prophecy when the council of elders laid their hands on you. 15 Practice these things, immerse yourself in them, so that all may see your progress. 16 Keep a close watch on yourself and on the teaching. Persist in this, for by so doing you will save both yourself and your hearers.

Human beings assume that they can live without goodness, when God is good and the only real Life. What is the result? They understand little about the divine Principle which saves and heals, and they get rid of sin, sickness, and death only in the temporal imagination. These errors thereby are not really destroyed. All that is unlike God will taint mortals until, here or hereafter, they gain the true understanding of God in the Science which destroys human delusions and reveals the grand realities of Spirit’s allness.

This understanding of our power when equipped by God has sadly disappeared from Christian history. For centuries it has been latent, a lost element of Christianity. Our missionaries carry the Bible around the world, but can it be said that they explain it practically, as Jesus did, when thousands of persons die annually from snake bites, famine, and disease? Understanding spiritual law and knowing that there is no temporal law, Jesus said: “These signs will accompany those who believe:…they will pick up snakes with their hands; and when they drink deadly poison, it will not hurt them at all; they will place their hands on sick people, and they will get well.”[2] It would be better if Christians believed and obeyed this sacred saying.

Jesus’ promise is perpetual.

For a single moment, become aware that Life and intelligence are purely spiritual—neither in nor of that which is measurable—and the body will stop complaining. Depression is turned into joy and sickness is turned into wellness when the body is controlled by spiritual Life, Truth, and Love. Hence the hope of Jesus’ promise: “Anyone who has faith in me will do what I have been doing . . . because I am going to the Father”[3]—because the spiritual self is absent from the body and present with Truth and Love.

Psalms 105: 1-8

Oh give thanks to the Lord; call upon his name;
make known his deeds among the peoples!
Sing to him, sing praises to him;
tell of all his wondrous works!
Glory in his holy name;
let the hearts of those who seek the Lord rejoice!
Seek the Lord and his strength;
seek his presence continually!
Remember the wondrous works that he has done,
his miracles, and the judgments he uttered,
O offspring of Abraham, his servant,
children of Jacob, his chosen ones!

He is the Lord our God;
his judgments are in all the earth.
He remembers his covenant forever,
the word that he commanded, for a thousand generations

We solemnly promise to be mindful, to pray for that Mind to be in us which was also in Christ Jesus; to do to others as we would have them do to us;[4] and to be merciful, just, and pure.
