Golden Text: John 7:24 (English Standard Version, ESV)*
Do not judge by appearances, but judge with right judgment.
Esther 2:2-10, 17
2 (T)he king’s personal attendants proposed, “Let a search be made for beautiful young virgins for the king. 3 Let the king appoint commissioners in every province of his realm to bring all these beautiful young women into the harem at the citadel of Susa. Let them be placed under the care of Hegai, the king’s eunuch, who is in charge of the women; and let beauty treatments be given to them. 5 Now there was in the citadel of Susa a Jew of the tribe of Benjamin, named Mordecai son of Jair, the son of Shimei, the son of Kish, 6 who had been carried into exile from Jerusalem by Nebuchadnezzar king of Babylon, among those taken captive with Jehoiachin king of Judah. 7 Mordecai had a cousin named Hadassah, whom he had brought up because she had neither father nor mother. This young woman, who was also known as Esther, had a lovely figure and was beautiful. Mordecai had taken her as his own daughter when her father and mother died.
8 When the king’s order and edict had been proclaimed, many young women were brought to the citadel of Susa and put under the care of Hegai. Esther also was taken to the king’s palace and entrusted to Hegai, who had charge of the harem. 9 She pleased him and won his favor. Immediately he provided her with her beauty treatments and special food. 10 Esther had not revealed her nationality and family background, because Mordecai had forbidden her to do so.
17 Now the king was attracted to Esther more than to any of the other women, and she won his favor and approval more than any of the other virgins. So he set a royal crown on her head and made her queen instead of Vashti.

Good looks and poise are independent of matter. Being possesses its qualities before they are perceived humanly. Beauty is a thing of life. It dwells forever in the eternal Mind and reflects the living God in expression, form, outline, and color.
Cosmetic surgery, botox, and body decoration are inadequate substitutes for the attractiveness of spirituality. Our spiritual nature is stunning and ongoing. It outperforms the aging process.
The recipe for beauty is to have less illusion and more Soul. Retreat from the belief of pain or pleasure in body and advance into the unchanging calm and glorious freedom of spiritual harmony.
Love never loses sight of loveliness. Its halo rests on its object. Isn’t it amazing that a friend is always beautiful? Men and women of seasoned years and increased wisdom ought to advance in spirituality and health, instead of lapsing into gloom and doom. Spiritual Mind renews the body with nice features. God supplies the body with beautiful images of thought; which destroy the complaints of mortal sense bent on bringing us to the grave.
I Samuel 16:1-7, 10-13
The Lord said to Samuel, “How long will you grieve over Saul, since I have rejected him from being king over Israel? Fill your horn with oil, and go. I will send you to Jesse the Bethlehemite, for I have provided for myself a king among his sons.” 2 And Samuel said, “How can I go? If Saul hears it, he will kill me.” And the Lord said, “Take a heifer with you and say, ‘I have come to sacrifice to the Lord.’ 3 And invite Jesse to the sacrifice, and I will show you what you shall do. And you shall anoint for me him whom I declare to you.” 4 Samuel did what the Lord commanded and came to Bethlehem. The elders of the city came to meet him trembling and said, “Do you come peaceably?” 5 And he said, “Peaceably; I have come to sacrifice to the Lord. Consecrate yourselves, and come with me to the sacrifice.” And he consecrated Jesse and his sons and invited them to the sacrifice.
6 When they came, he looked on Eliab and thought, “Surely the Lord’s anointed is before him.” 7 But the Lord said to Samuel, “Do not look on his appearance or on the height of his stature, because I have rejected him. For the Lord sees not as man sees: man looks on the outward appearance, but the Lord looks on the heart.”
10 And Jesse made seven of his sons pass before Samuel. And Samuel said to Jesse, “The Lord has not chosen these.” 11 Then Samuel said to Jesse, “Are all your sons here?” And he said, “There remains yet the youngest, but behold, he is keeping the sheep.” And Samuel said to Jesse, “Send and get him, for we will not sit down till he comes here.” 12 And he sent and brought him in. Now he was ruddy and had beautiful eyes and was handsome. And the Lord said, “Arise, anoint him, for this is he.” 13 Then Samuel took the horn of oil and anointed him in the midst of his brothers. And the Spirit of the Lord rushed upon David from that day forward. And Samuel rose up and went to Ramah

Science shows that appearances are often mistaken, leading to false judgments and conclusions. To correct the mistakes, we follow the simple rule that the greater controls the lesser. For example; the clearer view that the infinite controls the finite has brought to light new discoveries. The idea of infinity discounted the mistake of a “static universe.” Although indistinguishable to the temporal senses, the universe is not fixed, but expanding and contracting. Furthermore, the rate of expansion is greater than the contracting and the cosmos is moving away with space, not even through space. The universe exemplifies the infinite. There is no edge to the universe. From anywhere in the universe, it appears as though it is the center of an ever-expanding heaven. Even our solar system, orbiting in the outer edge of a spiral galaxy, the Milky Way, is indefinitely expanding and rotating in its own unique path.
There are many proofs of the illusion of physical sense. For example, when driving on the highway, the paved road ahead sometimes appears to have water on it. The barometer points to fair weather in the midst of murky clouds and drenching rain. What about the body? Physical senses tell us the body is solid, but the body isn’t solid. Cosmic rays, neutrinos, radio and TV waves are zinging through the body as if it is transparent. The examples of illusive, unreliable appearances could go on. Life teaches us to correct what the physical senses and human imprints claim as fact.
Matthew 23: 1-3, 25-28
Then Jesus said to the crowds and to his disciples, 2 “The scribes and the Pharisees sit on Moses’ seat, 3 so do and observe whatever they tell you, but not the works they do. For they preach, but do not practice.
25 “Woe to you, scribes and Pharisees, hypocrites! For you clean the outside of the cup and the plate, but inside they are full of greed and self-indulgence. 26 You blind Pharisee! First clean the inside of the cup and the plate, that the outside also may be clean.
27 “Woe to you, scribes and Pharisees, hypocrites! For you are like whitewashed tombs, which outwardly appear beautiful, but within are full of dead people’s bones and all uncleanness. 28 So you also outwardly appear righteous to others, but within you are full of hypocrisy and lawlessness.
16 Therefore let no one pass judgment on you in questions of food and drink, or with regard to a festival or a new moon or a Sabbath. 17 These are a shadow of the things to come, but the substance belongs to Christ. 18 Let no one disqualify you, insisting on asceticism and worship of angels, going on in detail about visions, puffed up without reason by his sensuous mind, 19 and not holding fast to the Head, from whom the whole body, nourished and knit together through its joints and ligaments, grows with a growth that is from God.

When the appearance of Spirit and matter, or Truth and error, seem to intermix, the appearance rests on foundations which time is wearing away. Mortal mind judges by the evidence of the physical senses, until Science wipes out this false evidence. A logic based on spirituality improves thought, takes a step out of error and encourages the next step in understanding the situation in divine Science.
I advise students to be charitable and kind, not only toward differing forms of religion and medicine, but to the very people who hold these differing opinions. Let us be faithful in pointing the way through Christ, as we understand it, but let us also be careful always to “stop judging by mere appearances, and make a right judgment.” Never condemn rashly.
God creates all appearances of reality. God‘s thoughts are spiritual realities. The human mind cannot simulate God’s power by inverting the divine creation and afterward recreating persons or things in its own dimensions. The human mind has no real existence, since nothing exists beyond the expanse of all-inclusive perpetuity, infinite God. In humble contentment, Mind’s infinite ideas manifest Life, happily realizing fulfillment.
Darkness loses the appearance of reality in the presence of light. So sin and sorrow, disease and death, are the supposed absence of Life, God, and vanish before truth and love.
In Science, person did not originate intelligence, but is manifested through intelligence. The appearance that there is intelligence or soul inside person has no relation to the Life reality.
We will never understand spiritual facts if we don’t metaphysically reverse the outward appearance. Man and woman are not a dichotomy of non-intelligence and intelligence. We coexist with and reflect God, Soul, substance, unchangeable and intelligent.
