Golden Text: Nehemiah 8:10 (NIV)*

Nehemiah said, “Go and enjoy choice food and sweet drinks, and send some to those who have nothing prepared. This day is holy to our Lord. Do not grieve, for the joy of the Lord is your strength.”

Lev 9:7, 15, 23-24

Moses said to Aaron, “Come to the altar and sacrifice your sin offering and your burnt offering and make atonement for yourself and the people; sacrifice the offering that is for the people and make atonement for them, as the Lord has commanded.”

15Aaron then brought the offering that was for the people. He took the goat for the people’s sin offering and slaughtered it and offered it for a sin offering as he did with the first one.

23 Moses and Aaron then went into the tent of meeting. When they came out, they blessed the people; and the glory of the Lord appeared to all the people. 24 Fire came out from the presence of the Lord and consumed the burnt offering and the fat portions on the altar. And when all the people saw it, they shouted for joy and fell facedown.

Isaiah 1: 11

“The multitude of your sacrifices—
what are they to me?” says the Lord.
“I have more than enough of burnt offerings,
of rams and the fat of fattened animals;
I have no pleasure
in the blood of bulls and lambs and goats.

Ex. 15:2

The Lord is my strength and my defense; he has become my salvation. He is my God, and I will praise him, my father’s God, and I will exalt him.

Many theories relative to God and creation do not make a lovable God or harmonious children. The beliefs we commonly entertain about happiness and life actually lack evidence of permanent joy and life. The unspoiled claims of harmonious and eternal being are discovered only in divine Science.

When human beings blend their thoughts of existence with the spiritual and work only as Truth and Love work, they will taste heaven and stop groping in the dark and clinging to the world. In his book, The Power of Now, Eckhart Tolle says, “You can still be active and enjoy manifesting and creating new forms, and circumstances, but you won’t be identified with them. You do not need them to give you a sense of self. They are not your life―only your life situation.”[1] It is important to remember to stay out of the dark beliefs that cheat us and make us involuntary hypocrites. Don’t be induced to believe you are doing good when really you are producing evil, injuring others, and deforming goodness.

Happiness can’t be defined by personal perceptions. The perceptions of human beings confer no lasting enjoyment. Higher enjoyments alone can satisfy the cravings of immortal person. Soul has infinite resources with which to bless humankind, and happiness is more readily responded to and more secure in our keeping, if found in Soul.

I Chron. 10-17

10 David praised the Lord in the presence of the whole assembly, saying,

“Praise be to you, Lord,
the God of our father Israel,
from everlasting to everlasting.
11 Yours, Lord, is the greatness and the power
and the glory and the majesty and the splendor,
for everything in heaven and earth is yours.
Yours, Lord, is the kingdom;
you are exalted as head over all.
12 Wealth and honor come from you;
you are the ruler of all things.
In your hands are strength and power
to exalt and give strength to all.
13 Now, our God, we give you thanks,
and praise your glorious name.

14 “But who am I, and who are my people, that we should be able to give as generously as this? Everything comes from you, and we have given you only what comes from your hand. 15 We are foreigners and strangers in your sight, as were all our ancestors. Our days on earth are like a shadow, without hope. 16 Lord our God, all this abundance that we have provided for building you a temple for your Holy Name comes from your hand, and all of it belongs to you. 17 I know, my God, that you test the heart and are pleased with integrity. All these things I have given willingly and with honest intent. And now I have seen with joy how willingly your people who are here have given to you.

Deut. 16: 15

For the Lord your God will bless you in all your harvest and in all the work of your hands, and your joy will be complete.

Life is eternal. We should find this out, and begin the demonstration thereof. Life and goodness are spiritual. Let us then shape our views of existence into loveliness, renewal, and consistency, rather than into decrepitude and loss.

Don’t keep records of the aging process. Chronological data is no part of the vast forever. Albums that record births and deaths are so many conspiracies against manhood and womanhood. Measuring and limiting all that is good and beautiful is an age-old habit. If not for that routine, we would enjoy our advanced years and still be vigorous, light-hearted, and full of promise. Governed by spiritual Mind, we are always graceful and noble. Each succeeding year unfolds wisdom, beauty, and holiness.

Matter, which can neither suffer nor enjoy, has no partnership with pain and pleasure, but human belief has such a partnership.

Truth will ultimately compel us all to exchange the pleasures and pains of fleshly sensations for the joys of Soul.

Hebrews 1:1-9

1 In the past God spoke to our ancestors through the prophets at many times and in various ways, but in these last days he has spoken to us by his Son, whom he appointed heir of all things, and through whom also he made the universe. The Son is the radiance of God’s glory and the exact representation of his being, sustaining all things by his powerful word. After he had provided purification for sins, he sat down at the right hand of the Majesty in heaven. So he became as much superior to the angels as the name he has inherited is superior to theirs.

For to which of the angels did God ever say, “You are my Son; today I have become your Father”? Or again, “I will be his Father, and he will be my Son”? And again, when God brings his firstborn into the world, he says, “Let all God’s angels worship him.” In speaking of the angels he says, “He makes his angels spirits, and his servants flames of fire.” But about the Son he says, “Your throne, O God, will last for ever and ever; a scepter of justice will be the scepter of your kingdom. You have loved righteousness and hated wickedness; therefore God, your God, has set you above your companions by anointing you with the oil of joy.”

The Bible teaches that Spirit renews and transforms the body. Take away the spiritual meaning of Scripture, and that collection of works can no more help human beings than moonbeams can melt a river of ice. The error of all generations is preaching without practice.

Happiness is won as good has ascendency over evil and the spiritual over the animal.

The belief that matter thinks, sees, or feels is not more real than the belief that matter enjoys and suffers. Human mind invented itself and called itself man and woman. The invented scenario goes on to say: “Matter has intelligence. Neurotransmitters and hormones govern us. Nerves feel. Brain thinks and sins. The stomach can make people edgy. Injury can cripple and matter can kill us.” These thoughts victimize human beings, taught, as they are by physiology, psychology, and pathology, to revere false testimony. Why do we respect the very falsities that are destroyed by Truth?

Nerves are not the source of pain or pleasure. We suffer or enjoy in our dreams, but this pain or pleasure is not communicated through a nerve. Why, after pulling a bad tooth, can there sometimes be a continued belief of a toothache? What about phantom limb? A limb is felt, but there are no nerves.

Divine Science declares that Mind is substance, also that temporal substance neither feels, suffers, nor enjoys. Hold these points strongly in view. Keep in mind the reality of being—that everyone is the image and likeness of God, in whom all being is painless and permanent. Remember that our perfection is real and unimpeachable, whereas imperfection is blameworthy, unreal, and is not brought about by divine Love.

Now and forever, we joyfully acknowledge God’s supremacy, omnipotence, and omnipresence.
