Subject: The power of Spirit
Golden text: Joshua 1:9 (ESV)*
Have I not commanded you? Be strong and courageous. Do not be frightened, and do not be dismayed, for the Lord your God is with you wherever you go.
I Samuel 17 (ESV)*
Now the Philistines gathered their armies for battle.
2 And Saul and the men of Israel were gathered, and encamped in the Valley of Elah, and drew up in line of battle against the Philistines. 3 And the Philistines stood on the mountain on the one side, and Israel stood on the mountain on the other side, with a valley between them. 4 And there came out from the camp of the Philistines a champion named Goliath of Gath, whose height was six cubits and a span. 5 He had a helmet of bronze on his head, and he was armed with a coat of mail, and the weight of the coat was five thousand shekels of bronze.
All the men of Israel, when they saw the man, fled from him and were much afraid.
32 And David said to Saul, “Let no man’s heart fail because of him. Your servant will go and fight with this Philistine.”
And Saul said to David, “Go, and the Lord be with you!”
38 Then Saul clothed David with his armor. He put a helmet of bronze on his head and clothed him with a coat of mail, 39 and David strapped his sword over his armor. And he tried in vain to go, for he had not tested them. Then David said to Saul, “I cannot go with these, for I have not tested them.” So David put them off. 40 Then he took his staff in his hand and chose five smooth stones from the brook and put them in his shepherd’s pouch. His sling was in his hand, and he approached the Philistine.
45 Then David said to the Philistine, “You come to me with a sword and with a spear and with a javelin, but I come to you in the name of the Lord of hosts, the God of the armies of Israel, whom you have defied.
48 When the Philistine arose and came and drew near to meet David, David ran quickly toward the battle line to meet the Philistine. 49 And David put his hand in his bag and took out a stone and slung it and struck the Philistine on his forehead. The stone sank into his forehead, and he fell on his face to the ground.
50 So David prevailed over the Philistine with a sling and with a stone, and struck the Philistine and killed him. There was no sword in the hand of David.

As the true knowledge of God becomes evident, the outdated concept of God as a mighty hero, lord, or king, will continue to vanish. Creeds and rituals still need to wash their hands of religious lore. Years ago, spiritual advancement was opposed by sword and spear.
In this world, thought rapidly brings to light many useful wonders. The force of thought also advances toward the spiritual cause of those things that give impulse to inquiry. Humanity is slowly yielding to the thoughts of Mind and looking away from physics to metaphysics as the cause of every effect. In this revolutionary period, physical hypotheses challenge metaphysics to meet in final combat. Like the shepherd-boy with his sling; we go forth to battle with the Goliath of the human mind and its material world.
Mortal mind judges by the evidence of the physical senses, until Science wipes out this false evidence. A logic based on spirituality improves thought, takes a step out of error and encourages the next step in understanding the situation in divine Science.
Scientists may call on one another for metaphysical treatment. However, if the callers don’t receive relief or help, they can be confident that God will guide them to use appropriately the temporary and eternal treatments. Step by step, as we trust Spirit, we will find that “God is our shelter, our strength, ever ready to help in time of trouble.”
The recognition of Spirit and of infinity does not come all at once, but throughout eternity. Haba na haba, a Swahili phrase for little by little, or step by step, has relevance. Human beings do not change from error to truth in an instant.
Our real indestructible being embodies sinless joy. This state of being is scientific and intact. It is a state of perfection discernible only by those who have the final understanding of God’s idea in divine Science. Death can never produce immortality or spirituality, for death must be overcome, not submitted to, before immortality appears.
Being is holiness, harmony, immortality. It is already proved that knowledge of this, even in a small degree, will improve the physical and moral standard of human beings, will increase longevity, will purify and elevate character. Progress will finally destroy all error and bring immortality to light. Spiritual progress is truthful. New thoughts are constantly breaking human laws. The two contradictory theories—that human mind is something, or that all is Mind—will fight each other until one is acknowledged to be the victor. Calling the people to arms, Winston Churchill said: ”Our task is not only to win the battle—but to win the war.” Science says: All is Mind and Mind’s idea. You must fight it out to the end. Matter, human mind, is of no help in this war.
